Kirby: Triple Deluxe remains on top this week.

Kirby Triple Deluxe

Kirby: Triple Deluxe remains the top seller in Japan this week following its 3DS debut last week, this week’s Media Create sales numbers show. The platformer moved another 81,000 units.

Following is Puzzle & Dragons Z for 3DS, moving another 48,000 units. The game, based on the super popular smartphone title, has sold over 1,265,000 copies so far.

Yokai Watch, Level-5’s cute 3DS RPG launched in July last year, takes position four on the sales chart with 19,000 copies sold. It hasn’t appeared on the sales chart for some time, but resurfaced last week likely due to the January 8 launch of the TV anime.

On the hardware side, sales are similar to last week’s. Each console holds the same position on the chart, but sold a few thousand units less.

    Vita-chan, ganbatte!

Excuse the weeaboo-speak. Nice to see the gap between Vita and 3DS is starting to shrink.

Oh, and PSP, keep going down. For the love of God, end already.

    • Nick Pantazis

Personally I don’t care about the gap, I’m just glad both are successful.

      • Gariya

Of course. It’s nice to see both doing good.

    • Ping92

i think it is because almost everyone has a 3ds over there

  • Pyrofrost

No new games and a continuation of the after holiday sales dive.

  • Renaldi Saputra

wow at Youkai Watch and nice Vita sales

  • Nick Pantazis

Sadly a slow time of year for Japanese hardware and software sales. We may see declines for another week or two still before the platforms settle on their down month sales levels.

    • Aiddon

yeah, January is typically a graveyard for entertainment media. February is a little better, but usually it’s not until March when things start on the upswing

  • TheBlackRabbit

    vita tv……..

  • Vayne

Will the PS4 will remove the kingdom of 3DS next month?

    • Stealth

      not a chance

      • icecoffemix

        Do you like crow?

        • Stealth

There will be no crow there. At that Price, based on how consoles are doing. Its going to settle into third or fourth place. Its not outselling Vita or 3DS.

But that isnt a bad thing nor does it mean the system is bad. But its not going to be first place in the region longterm

          • icecoffemix

On what is doing? PS3 is doing great for a 8 year old console.

This situation also happened in UK by the way, where old generation console (which has gone on for far too long) saw drastic decline after new gen announcement, despite having the biggest game released on the year GTAV, and look what happen now.

            • Stealth

PS3 is doing great? If you think so. I doubt I could convince you otherwise.

              • icecoffemix

Could you cite any other 8 year old console or portable with that kind of software sales in Japan at any given period?

                • Stealth

Its quite simple 3DS has a Dragon Quest Release in February, PS4 does not. Thats the difference.

                  • icecoffemix

So you have no answer and even moving the goalpost by limiting it to February.

FYI, 2013 3DS sales is down in Japan. In year where it got Animal Crossing, Pokemon and MH. Three biggest 3DS game yet eclipsing any other DQ Spin-off.

                    • Stealth

He said next month. Who cares really if the 3DS was down YoY, it still outsold every other platform combined for 2013. Nothing was even close, and if we include software? the gap was eve bigger.

I know its in vogue right now to smash Nintendo, but 3DS had an amazing year in Japan.

                    • icecoffemix

“Who cares if it’s declining when it’s number 1!”
That worked so well with Wii.

I wonder if this company and most of their fans are just inherently this ignorant.

I’m done with you, and Yeah Nintendo is number one who cares about anything else, fuck yeah Nintendo!!1!!

                    • Stealth

Uh, the Wii was the biggest success of last gen next to DS.

It not only made profit, the system helped Nintendo sell over a BILLION units of software………..

Saying it was anything other than successful. Thats ignorant.

                    • Elvick

Yet it hurt Nintendo long term. As seen with the Wii U’s massive flop. When success comes at a cost, then it’s not really a clear “success”.

I’d say if the successor was something people cared about, then it’d have been a success. Because then it would have actually stuck with people. But it didn’t.

They gained temporary fad status. And that moment has passed and they’re worse off than they were before, because in trying to keep the fad going they alienated their dedicated fanbase. Who aren’t all so quick to jump back in with the Wii U. And so far, it’s been justified.

Nintendo is currently riding off a fraction of their fanbase.

And the last few years of the Wii were some of the most pathetic years of software releases ever. Especially for a console that actually did well.

It may have made them money at the time, but it cost them and now they’re paying that cost.

                    • icecoffemix

Who the heck said or even implied Wii is not successful? Your straw man?

It seems you really are not able to read between the lines, everything has to be spoken directly in your face.

In 2010, Nintendo effectively ignored Wii’s sharp decline and its audience. Look at what happened to its successor now.

                      But of course
                      is the standard MO

“”Who cares if it’s declining when it’s number 1!”That worked so well with Wii.”

                    • icecoffemix

                      “quotation mark”

                      reading comprehension, learn it.

          • Elvick

Based on how consoles are doing?

You mean the consoles that are over 7 years old now?

            Good insight.

  • Stealth

Hardware numbers are abysmal aside from 3DS which is slightly less abysmal.

    Dragon Quest should boost 3ds.

Software sales are good, Hardware stinks is my takeaway. That might be negative, but thats how it is.

    • shogunknight

They are abysmal including the 3ds. 3ds sold less than it did last year. Vita sold more than it did last year so its in a better position compared to its last years figure. WiiU sold less too, same goes for PS3, 360 and PSP. Otherwise its just a normal week sale. WiiU is the only one in the tough spot as of now

      • Stealth

YoY in this case really doesnt matter. Vitas YoY might be higher, but the actual sales? terrible. Its only in second and 3DS is about to be pushed likly to 100k again next week with DQ, which is still too low.

But I own a vita and love it. Sales arent the be all and end all.

        • icecoffemix

Why doesn’t it matter? Because it doesn’t fit with your scenario?

It’s showing that the userbase is growing, and that’s with a crossplatform PS2 HD port game in weeks where hardware sales traditionally plummet.

          • Stealth

The user base growing from nothing, to slightly more than nothing, is not impressive.

But like I said, I have a Vita, I love it, but this weeks Mediacreate hardware figures sucked.

            • icecoffemix

Yes of course, ignore everything else, factor only what will deliver my narrative, that’s always working for you.

            • Elvick

I see your true colors shining through~

        • shogunknight

Maybe you dont really understand my point, but looking at my comment and yours, im actually not as bothered about the number any of them would sell and less bothered about their competitiveness or position in charts.

  • icecoffemix

    Courtesy of Neogaf’s poster.

    • crimsonidol

I’m curious if the next months the Vita will stay on this level or even rise a little more. Would really hope so as this really nice piece of hardware deserves it.

      • icecoffemix

        Seeing the line-up, probably not.

        But you never know.

    • jujubee88

That stat seems a little bias. Right now FFX is fresh off a late year release on VITA and nothing was really on VITA in early 2013, though I’d like to see the JP games releases on that date.

Also, if the VITA sold twice the sum (in week 1-3 2014) it still wouldn’t have half the 3DS ‘slumping sales’ figures. This has been the general parody [between 3DS vs. VITA]. It will continue to be this way until Nintendo make a successor device. Even than, VITA will only barely start outselling 3DS bc consoles/hh tend to have legs in JP (see: recent JP PSP games)

  • SuperLuigi

Kirby Kirby Kirby that’s a name you should know!

    • Stealth

Kirby selling this well in Japan is shocking.

  • TheExile285

Its nice to see FFX|X-2 HD is still selling well on both systems. Also, Kirby ^_^

    • Stealth

      FF 12 HD incoming?

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

There is one super Famicom game made by Hal Laboratory creators of Kirby and Published by Squaresoft. Its a game called “Alcahest”. Its an Action-RPG.

Very few people know of this title.

    • Lalum

This looks amazing, as does the box art.

  • Elvick

    Slow week.

    [PSV] Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster Twin Pack (Square Enix, 12/26/13) – 12,805 (207,212)

Quick SE, announce FFXII HD (and FFXI while you’re at it). March is going to be great but more importantly, dat rise! Vita holding on this week was good too. When’s DBZ’s japanese release date?

  • PrinceHeir

The Legend of Zelda, FFX and FFX02 HD! and even Pokemon X and Y is still on top!
