Xbox LIVE Gold, on the other hand, is required on Xbox One.

The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online will be playable on PlayStation 4 without a PlayStation Plus subscription, Bethesda confirmed during a PlayStation Blog fan Q&A.

Contacted by Joystiq, the company also confirmed Xbox One users, on the other hand, will need an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription to play the game.

Last August, Bethesda said it was “pushing” to get Microsoft to allow free play.

“We have been in talks with Microsoft about that very thing,” Bethesda Softworks marketing boss Peter Hines said then. “And seeing whether or not there’s any room to change their minds about that, for folks who are only playing The Elder Scrolls Online and don’t want to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, just to pay for The Elder Scrolls Online.”

The Elder Scrolls Online is due out on April 4 for PC and this June for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

I think Microsoft will give in, seeing as Sony’s come out and said they won’t require a Plus subscription for their announced MMOs. I mean, they didn’t require a Live subscription for PSU and FFXI, so unless they ENJOY looking like dicks next to Sony, they’ll do the right thing.

      lol not happening

*cue famous Kanye West Hurrican Katrina quote*

Anyways they’re not going to give in because their rationale is probably ‘everyone that gets an XB1 will get XBLA anyway so whats the point’….

    lol M$.

(sorry, but in this case it’s true.)

    Hahaha…….oh man….

    XBox LIE Pure Comedic Gold

  • shogunknight

This may be the only 180 Microsoft wouldnt do. Quite unfortunate, but im sure XBox users are already used to paying for XBL from 360, in that case they would be making double payments. Another P2P MMO, Sheesh….worst part is that the game isnt free at first, you have to buy the game THEN start paying monthly (just like FFXIV)

    • Budgiecat

They make double payments for FF XI in the West and MHFG in Japan for 360….

      • shogunknight

Seems like this is going to be the norm this gen coming

        • Budgiecat

Thats why I’m not so quick to jump into next gen.

I wasn’t that quick to jump in the last two gens anyway…

  • HighBrowDrifter

Oh Microsoft…..pull the trigger already. Sony is man-handling you from all possible angles.

  • Wolf Star

M$ screwed it up yet again .. Now Xbox people have to Pay Double!! $60 (Elders Scrolls online game) + $60 (1 year XBLA) (if anyone doesn’t have one) + (the price for the subscription) just saying :/

  • SuperLuigi

As much as this is stupid on ms. If anyone buys an xbox one and the only game they play online is elder scrolls…how often would that happen?

    • icecoffemix

At times XBL only has 25 millions gold subscriber, X360 has about 80 millions install base. How many do you think?

And btw, there are a lot of offline only game for Xbox, why would anyone buy one console just for one (online) game?

      • SuperLuigi

I can see people playing xbox one offline only for single player goodness but I agree…why would anybody buy an xbox one and ONLY play Elder Scrolls Online? They are doing it wrong.

  • Elvick

Not surprising. Just another thing that makes Xbox Live a huge ripoff.
