Announced at Virtua Fighter 20th anniversary celebration event.

Virtua Fighter‘s Akira Yuki will appear as a boss character in Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, Sega announced at Virtua Fighter‘s 20th anniversary festival in Tokyo.

The upcoming fighting game pits Dengeki Bunko characters like Kirino (Oreimo), Asuna (Sword Art Online), and Shizuo (Durarara) against each other. It’s in development at Ecole and French-Bread, published by Sega, and is due out in Japanese arcades this spring. A home console version is also planned.

….seems kind out of place IMO

    • Pyrofrost

That is exactly what I was about to type.

If anything, this is happening just to foreshadow a new VF in the works.

      • James Reilly

Like how VF characters are in DOA 5…? Yeah.

        • Pyrofrost

Yeah, that was cross-promotion, they had a new entry to 5 in the arcades and it hit consoles that same year.

I’m talking about the timing of this, and the 20th anni, the fact that there hasn’t been a numbered VF release in over 7 years, and we’re in a new gen. There is just a bit too much to the timing. So I won’t be surprised if a new one is announced before long.

          • Budgiecat

Seemed more like a homage thing to me. Never even heard of the ‘new’ VF 5 arcade version and I’ll bet no one cared. It was more like ‘please let us use your VF characters, we highly respect you guys, without VF,DoA would have never existed’

            • Pyrofrost

They brought out arcade machines for VF5 Final Showdown, and arcades are still a pretty big thing in Japan.

          • James Reilly

Jacky Bryant got added in DoA5U this September. Not to mention VF characters appearing recently in Project X Zone. As much as I want another VF game I wouldn’t put too much faith that this is a sign for a sequel.

            • Pyrofrost

Yeah, VF will never see a new game.

Not really, it’s a crossover between Dengeki Bunko and Sega. That’s why the stages are from Sega games.

  • Watahashi

Never really liked him, he’s such a boring character. There are a lot of better options they could’ve gone with.

    • James Reilly

Main characters get priorities to represent their fighting game franchise.

  • Aleksandrina

He’s… out of place, to say the least. I like the Virtua Fighter series. Akira? Not so much. He’s a bit dull. Sarah Bryant would have been my choice, personally.

Just hoping they’ll announce Virtua Fighter 6 soon~

    • James Reilly

Akira is the main iconic character of VF.

      • Aleksandrina

But not the most popular, that’s for sure. When they want a character from another franchise, I believe it’s better to choose one of the most popular characters.

But like I said, I don’t really -care-. I’m not sure I’m going to buy the game anyway. All I want is Virtua Fighter 6 now, but this is slightly off topic.

  • ryougazell

Well, it was expected Sega characters would make into the game after a Valkyria Chronicles stage was shown in the 1st screenshots

  • TheBlackRabbit

he should get slaughtered by any of the cast e.e….

  • 武神水樹

    I can see it now

    • PrinceHeir

      Horahorahora! Doshita!

      Juunen Hayain Dayo!

  • Gundam Gamer

I think it’s a great choice. I’m not a fan of Akira either, but the game is full of unlikely characters for a fighting game, so it’s cool that an iconic fighting game character is the BOSS. It’s like the character’s have to prove their skills against a REAL fighter. Also, hopefully we will get this on PS3.

  • captainhowdy

I thought they were going to announce VF6. Guess not :- .

  • PrinceHeir

    wait so no VF6?? :

    • Budgiecat

      Jūnen hayai-n-da-yo!

  • Budgiecat

Woulda rather had LAN DI as the final boss

  • icup ✔️

so all the characters so far are from anime… but the boss is from a 3d fighter? i don’t get it. akira as a hidden guest boss is fine but as the main boss is just…

    • echokanon

all the characters are from novels but they just happened to have an anime adaption.

although i dont really like the appearance of akira, this gave me some hope for valkyria chronicle’s crossover. hopefully Selvaria would be included. Thats the only Sega crossover I’d like to have though

    oh my…… nice troll sega

  • Chestnut Bowl

What a wacky choice. I like it.

I hope they keep all his button inputs the same!

  • Simon Bedro

What a dumb choice. That’s like if Capcom created a Shonen Jump fighting game and then have Ryu as a boss. Though, unlike Akira, Ryu might have a chance against certain Jump characters.
