Atlus celebrating with limited time Japanese sale.

Worldwide shipments for Persona 4 Golden have reached over 700,000 worldwide, Atlus announced.

The game also took home the User’s Choice award at Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia’s annual PlayStation Awards ceremony for the second consecutive year.

To celebrate the game’s high sales, Atlus is discounting the game on the Japanese PlayStation Store from 5,980 yen to 4,980 yen. The promotion will run from December 11 to January 8.

  • Adol Christin

Hope they release a Vita version of P5.

    • Nightcore34

Yeah same, I’m all for it especially if they’re going to do what golden did and add extra stuff.

Edit; especially as my vita needs more games.

      • Adol Christin

It’s possible, Atlus will release a Vita and PS4 Deluxe version.

        • Nightcore34

Do you think so.. I understand the Vita but I think the PS4 version would have to wait like the vita version of Golden.

  • bloodiOS

    Congrats!

  • 罪罰

    #based aturasu

  • Elvick

All the more reason to be confused as to why they haven’t done any other RPGs on the system.

    • 罪罰

Cuz they just workin on persona faiv instead

    • bloodiOS

Yeah, I’d like to see Atlus releases a Vita port of SMTIV.

      • MrFinalgamer

with 3D models for the demons! (the fact that even SMT III had them on a weaker system makes me mad)

        • Rokkun

I dunno I thought the art direction on the 3ds was good.

  • Rogerrmark

I wonder if it sold better than FES/P3?

    • outlawauron

      It did.

      • Rogerrmark

        So happy for them!

700K is probably the same amount 2,3 or even 4 Megaten-non Persona games sold.Together.

  • Pyrofrost

And here is further justification for all the Persona 4 related spin-offs.

    • 罪罰

      THAT SMILE IS MEGIDOLAIN CUTE

  • Watahashi

Wouldn’t that make it the best selling Persona game in the entire franchise? Neat.

    • Pyrofrost

Persona 4 is the best selling MegaTen title of all time, it’s way past the point of simply ‘best selling Persona game.’

      • Elvick

So is it also Atlus’ best selling game then?

I’m not familiar with their older stuff.

        • Pyrofrost

The only games Atlus has that has sold more than P4G is Catherine and the PS2 version of Persona 4.

          • outlawauron

False. Persona 4 Golden nearly doubled what Persona 4 has done.

            • Pyrofrost

Persona 4 on PS2 has sold over 800k copies, but if you have a citation supporting your statement, I will be glad to see it.

              • outlawauron

Persona 4 PS2 shipped 300k in Japan. Sold ~110k in NA. There’s no citation for it selling over 800k. Persona 4 sold less than Persona 4 Golden.

                http://www.siliconera.com/2009/10/06/well-how-many-copies-did-persona-4-and-devil-survivor-sell/

Even the most the positive estimates on GAF have it below P4G. You’re the only person I’ve been able to find to argue this.

                • Pyrofrost

Do you see the date of your source?

Do you think the PS2 version had stopped selling when Atlus released those numbers?

All it proves is Persona 4 Golden has sold more copies faster.

                  http://www.vgchartz.com/game/24780/shin-megami-tensei-persona-4/

Sure, my source is just vgchartz; but it’s more reliable than a source that’s over four years old.

EDIT: Just putting this out there, down-voting me isn’t going to make a source over 4 years old more reliable.

                  • outlawauron

It did stop selling in Japan. It did have a best re-release, but that doesn’t push it over the top either. JRPGs are very frontloaded. As I said, the most positive esitmates from GAF (people claiming to have NPD) puts the NA sales at <200k. It sold under 6 figures in Europe. VGC is not a credible source for JRPG sales. Every single one is overtracked (member of VGC since March 2007, I know).

                    • Pyrofrost

I guess all those NA reprints and a best re-release means nothing?

We can go back and fourth about this all day, but right now the numbers currently available show that the PS2 version is still higher.

With the way P4G is moving though, it is on a fast track to beat even the numbers shown on vgchartz. So with that said, you will end up being right.

Right now, the only thing proven is P4G selling exponentially faster than the PS2 version of P4.

                    • outlawauron

What numbers do you have available that aren’t entirely incorrect?

Also, disqus sucks as a commenting system. replies take minutes to show up and I’ll have a dupe comment soon.

                    • Pyrofrost

I could ask the same of you.

If you want to play that game, do you have a source that’s not over 4 years old? Something about as recent as this article with P4G’s current numbers?

                    • Alkhan

Dude, just stop. P4G has outsold P4. Let it go.

                    • Pyrofrost

Gee, I guess you told me.

On topic, keep in mind that there are no current numbers suggesting that to be true, nor is there there a statement from Atlus suggesting that.

Honestly, it really doesn’t matter which between the two sold the most. All that matters is the success Atlus is seeing with the MegaTen franchise. One of my personal favorite JRPG franchises.

                  • outlawauron

Not sure where my fully typed reply went.

Summary, it did stop selling in Japan. The Best re-release didn’t do a whole lot. VGC overtracks all JRPGs in NA. NPD has it <200k.

          • Watahashi

I think 700,000 actually puts it above the original P4. Catherine might be around the same as P4G, since it had 500k back in 2011.

            • Pyrofrost

Both Catherine and the PS2 version of P4 are over 800k.

              • Kevadu

Please tell me you didn’t get that number form VGChartz…

VGChartz is the worst possible source you can use for sales data. They don’t track anything there, they literally just make shit up. That is not an exaggeration. They make up numbers and people repost them like they’re gospel when they don’t have any other sources. They are a disservice to the industry.

                • Pyrofrost

It’s not like anyone else has legit source material.

It’s the only place anywhere offering current numbers though.

                  • Kevadu

Sometimes it really is better to just say you don’t know. Because VGChartz really *doesn’t* know. They don’t have access to any sources that the rest of us don’t. VGChartz numbers can be (and have been) retroactively changed 100% or more on occasions when publishers released actual numbers.

Let’s be clear here: VGChartz does not have retail partners to compile numbers from. They are not industry insiders. It’s just some people with a website who make their best guess. That’s what it is: a guess. Nothing more. And they have been way off many, many times. And they’re particularly bad at getting more niche titles right. They put most of their effort into the big-name million+ sellers.

Saying, “well it’s the only source I could fine so let’s just assume it’s true” is just plain irresponsible. Because, particularly for smaller titles from Japan, they are just pulling numbers out of their asses for the sake of having numbers. They don’t have a clue how well these games sold.

                    • Pyrofrost

I am willing to say I didn’t know, when I don’t know something.

No one else was providing any recent numbers though, so what was I to go by.

What I know is that P4 on PS2 was Atlus’ best selling MegaTen title. Catherine when it release was the biggest launch title in their companies history.

What I have not seen anywhere is how P4G has become the company’s best selling MegaTen title or Persona game.

I know people have a disdain for VGChartz, I knew that when I was posting it; however, there is nothing else on the internet available.

Like I said below though. In the end, all that matters is that Atlus is seeing much deserved success with the MegaTen franchise. Sucess that is long overdue.

Persona 5 ruby on vita! calling it…

    • Budgiecat

      Persona 5 Crimson RED

    • jujubee88

You ripped that subtitle off from a guy on GAF!

p.s. (I really want a mainline Persona on VITA again!)

    • new_tradition

      Persona 5: Garnet Edition

  • $83030187

Now I’m really confused as to why Persona 5 wasn’t a PS3/Vita title.

Unless the Vita couldn’t handle whatever Persona 5 is pulling off graphics-wise.

    • Pyrofrost

Because they are leaving the Vita open for its ‘enhanced’ port.

      *I can see the future*

      • HighBrowDrifter

AHH! It’s sooo bright it hurts my eyes! Stahp!

      • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Y’all seem so sure about it but it’s just depressing right now. Not to say I’m not looking forward to P4D (those new screens~) but I feel Vita could have received a little more to celebrate. I’d have gladly accepted P4-2 or P3: Ultimate as well. Though it’s entirely possible that after the P3 movie, such a thing might still occur but ah frustration and depression for now. I actually got my copy of P4G on Black Friday. I also put the Artbook for P4 on hold at my workplace, so I’m going ALL in <3

  • HighBrowDrifter

Oh well that’s fantastic!….And as a representation of your gratitude, you grace your proud fan-base with a dance simulator…..great. 눈_눈

There better be a Persona 5: Diamond or Persona 5: Fabulous (*wink*)….or some mofos are going to be slapped!

    -Puss

    • xkumo

I knew someone would bitch about it.
how about instead of turning your nose up at it because “lel dancing is gay xD” you actually play project diva? It’s a solid rhythm game made by the people making P4D.

      • HighBrowDrifter

“lel dancing is gay xD”…those are your words, not mine. I am simply not in favor of having a dancing game when we PS Vita owners could have a standalone installment of a brand new Persona that follows older traditions (RPG)…

Also, it’s not necessarily the wisest thing to cast judgement unless you have any proof/evidence of me having not played Project Diva.

In fact, I’ve played Project Diva 1 & 2 (PSP), as well as rhythm games like PaRappa the Rapper, Beatmania, etc. To top things off, I was amongst the first people back in the 90’s who played Dance Dance Revolution at the arcades in Germany….so your statement is just cold air, drifting through the atmosphere.

Regardless of that matter…I respect your point of view. I knew someone would “bitch” about my commentary, but I felt the need to disagree with the current situation at hand.

        Stay thirsty my friend,
        -Puss

  • Eclipse

It makes me very happy to see my favorite game doing so well.

    Congratulations, Atlus <3

    • Pyrofrost

Indeed, it’s always a great day to see a JRPG success story ^_^

  • MrFinalgamer

very nice numbers. especially because of how small the user base for vita is. hell the best selling vita game has only sold like 1.2 million, so persona isn’t so far behind.
although i might not like some of the fans this game has gathered, it’s always nice to see this amazing series grow

  • jujubee88

I went with the digital version. It’s such a long game and when I feel like jumping into it, I can just find and boot it up in seconds.
