  • Pyrofrost

    Shin Gundam Musou (PS3) – 10/9/8/9 [36/40]

That’s what I like to see!
You will be in my arms soon, dear!

  • TrueDefault

Ow, Madoka only got 30/40. Although to be honest I was expecting lower score.

    • Renaldi Saputra

maybe an anime adaptation game didn’t give much scores?
and so another games based on existing anime

      • TrueDefault

Yeah I thought so too. I preordered it anyway knowing roughly what I would get.

  • Anime10121

So… The best rated Drakengard in the series tied only with Nier huh… So far so good :)

For reference the original got a 29 whereas Drakengard 2 scored a 30.

    • adhesive

I thought most people hated Drakengard 2. Why would it get a higher score?

      • Anime10121

The plot wasn’t anywhere near as compelling as the first games, but it DID play a whole lot better and also ran better than the first game. So I’m thinking that’s where the increase in score came from.

        • $83030187

Just isn’t the same without the pedophilia, incest and cannibalistic elves.

          • Anime10121

Lol this! And don’t forget the giant floating evil babies. : P

          • Arcana Gear

            *nods*

  • Maria Garcia

I dont care what famitsu say.Im gonna buy that madoka game

  • $83030187

Solid score for Drakengard 3. I look forward to American reviews tearing it a new asshole because of reasons.

Like how Joystiq refused to review Nier because they couldn’t figure out how to get the fishing to work.

    • Anime10121

Which by all accounts was OPTIONAL. I fished the one time I had to, and even then skipped it when given the option. I mean there weren’t even any trophies/achievements that made you fish, so I just completely laughed at Joystiq and was all like lolwut?!

      • $83030187

It’s like how Polygon gave Dragon’s Crown a shit score because they claimed it was sexist, and spent the entire review bitching about the art-style.

Western critiques of niche Japanese games are completely useless.

        • Kevadu

Oh come on, Polygon was very much the exception in this case. Most western reviewers scored Dragon’s Crown quite highly. And the criticisms they did make were legitimate (like how repetetive the game can be, and the fact that online play has to be unlocked very every character…).

Don’t cherry-pick the worst example you can find and act like it’s normal.

          • $83030187

You are right, many sites did review the game well.

However, that doesn’t change my opinion on game journalism, and I still don’t believe that their reviews should be taken as gospel when it comes to more niche games.

Or, taken as gospel at all.

          • adhesive

I think the problem is more that “misogyny” is actually becoming a big thing in the games industry, and that third wave feminists are infecting the industry with their incessant whining about…well, everything honestly. I don’t agree with Carolyn Petit’s review of Grand Theft Auto V(don’t care for GTA myself), but it takes an astounding amount of ignorance to dock points on a game for misogyny, when the entire series has always been a satirical representation of the worst aspects of society. It’s insanely stupid, especially for a game reviewer, to do such a thing, and it’s on the lines of removing the word “nigger” from Huckleberry Finn despite the word being a key point in showing the ignorance of racism.

            • $83030187

I’d say that misogyny and sexism are an issue in gaming but there are better ways to go about changing things.

Like, getting more women involved in the gaming industry.

That seems more productive than screeching about how George Kamitani and Suda 51 are horrible, sexist manpigs.

              • adhesive

I think they’re issues as far as society goes, but the gaming industry is one of the worst places to start, as it’s probably one of the areas least entrenched in sexism. The current trend is that anything that doesn’t worship a female character is misogyny. ICO and Dishonored were both called misogynist by Anita Sarkeesian for no reason other than because they didn’t feature butt kicking mary sue badasses, and this is going to have a pretty negative impact on the industry if it becomes widely accepted.

                • $83030187

I cannot stand that woman. There is a discussion to be had, but she doesn’t need to be involved.

Her obsession with tropes is dangerous, because EVERY character in ANY piece of media can fit under one.

Oh, a game has a badass female protagonist? It’s “Ms. Male Character”. Nothing becomes good enough.

I get that people want better written female characters, so do I, but we need to accept that this isn’t an issue with sexism. It’s an issue with shitty writers in the gaming industry.

          • Elvick

All games in that genre are repetitive though.

It’s not more, or less, repetitive than the “greats” of the genre.

      • Kevadu

There was a fishing trophy, actually. Just one, but you had to fish *everything*. I remember getting it when I still had delusions about platinuming Nier…(those damn weapon upgrades…)

        • Anime10121

Oh, well my mistake. I quit trying to play because of that damn flor quest. I was like nuh uh, nope, not doing this. Don’t know how I platinum’d XIII with its whole platinum ingot farming thing. Though I think I just had more time available to me back then…

        • Elvick

The gardening is what killed my platinum dreams.

    • adhesive

It’s even worse than that. Fishing was tedious, but the game eventually threw you a bone and gave you the fish after a few failures. What he did is he failed to look in the bottom right corner and understand that he wasn’t at the right fishing spot.

      • $83030187

And the fact that Joystiq’s complete ineptitude could have pushed people away from experiencing one of the greatest stories ever crafted in a video game is why I haven’t gone back to the site since they pulled that shit.

It just further cemented that game “journalists” are a fucking joke.

        • adhesive

The worst part is that a lot of reviewers are creating a victim complex for themselves now, either for other people or for themselves. I was linked by a friend to this reviewer confession on Reddit who said that life wasn’t all glory…but then he admitted that he got an all expenses paid vacation and hotel just to play and review a damn video game.

Honestly, I think journalism as a whole is in hospice, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get better anytime soon.

          • $83030187

Once the game industry learns to sell products past the reviewers and directly to us, like the movie and music industries, things will get better.

    • Arcana Gear

it has sexy women and she is comfortable with sex? Filthy! outrageous! it can be a good game but this overshadows everything! horrible game!

      • $83030187

A powerful female protagonist with her own harem is bound to cause a few meltdowns.

I can’t wait. I just pray that Square Enix doesn’t censor a thing.

        • Arcana Gear

yep, i cant wait to see it. And i dont think they will, after all they didnt censor drakengard 2 and nier.

          • $83030187

Well, Nier was toned down a little bit if I remember correctly in regards to Kaine being a hermaphrodite.

Though, if you payed attention, it was pretty heavily implied that she was.

Though, that didn’t bother me as much as the stuff cut from the original Drakengard.

  • HeatPhoenix

Gundam Musou got inexplicably high. I wonder why? Does anyone know what makes this one better than the other ones (or did the other ones all get scores like this)?

  • https://twitter.com/GaleGlory89 KiQun

Drakengard 3 is getting localized in Chinese in January. I hope NA/EU will get it the following month.

    Importing Drag On Dragoon 3

    • Anime10121

You do know it’s coming to the west right?

      • Pyrofrost

He’s probably just really looking forward to playing it and doesn’t want to wait for it..

If Shin Gundam Musou and Yakuza: Ishin were announced for the West, that won’t stop me from importing.

The next Tales mothership game, I will be preordering the import for that as soon as orders open up; and we all know that one will be coming West.

        • Anime10121

I can understand that (and just to let everyone know I’m not the one who down voted his comment), but I just hope he still supports the title when it launches In the west, as games like this need as much support as they can get here.

          • Pyrofrost

I don’t know about him; but personally, I don’t double dip.

Edit: Well, I should say, I almost never double dip.

            • Anime10121

              :(

            • $83030187

I am grateful that there aren’t many people like you.

Or we wouldn’t get shit localized. :P

              • Pyrofrost

If there are importers buying the localized version of every game they import, I can assure you it doesn’t represent the majority.
At least, not in circles I’m in at PS3T and Gamefaqs.

Not to mention, the importing community’s size is insignificant. The West isn’t overflowing with people who are willing to pay 1.25 to 1.75 times cost to get a game. If a game is doing so poorly that it’s depending on us see its success, there is no helping it.

                (Also, I didn’t down-vote you, if you’re wondering).

                • $83030187

Didn’t Ni no Kuni do pretty bad in Japan, but really well in the west?

                  • Pyrofrost

                    Yeah.

It was a remake of the DS game + a little expanded story. Those results are not surprising considering that, same gen ports/remakes aren’t exactly popular. Also, there is the state of portables vs. consoles in Japan. Namco also promoted the shit out of it here. Way more that they did for any Tales game, that’s for sure.

I don’t see what this has to do with importers though.

                    • $83030187

I think I misread your post a little bit. :P

                    • Pyrofrost

                      No problem.

Besides, if it means anything, I rarely import games that I know will be receiving a localization. If I import a game that’s already confirmed, it’s because I’m being made to wait longer than I am willing to wait.

Generally the game I import is one we would never get, or one that has yet to be confirmed.

                    • $83030187

I hope my original post didn’t give off the impression that I have an issue with importers, because I don’t.

Hell, there are a few games I’d like to import, like the new Onechanbara (because clearly Namco/D3 aren’t going to bring it over).

I was just joking how if everyone imported Japanese games, none would get localized, because we’d all already have them and we wouldn’t buy them twice.

                    • Pyrofrost

It’s no problem, I see what you mean and no offense was taken. Thanks for taking the time to explain ^^

The internet is a fickle bitch though. I’ve seen people get attacked all over the internet, even here at Gematsu, for importing. Many people don’t realize that importers in the West represents a niche, within a niche, within a niche, within a niche. Even many of the people who say they do, really don’t.
So I just try to explain that sort of stuff.

                    • Kevadu

Ni no Kuni was not a ‘remake’. The two games were planned from the start and cover different (though overlapping) material. Not to mention that the actual game mechanics were completely different.

                    • Pyrofrost

                      >different (though overlapping) material.

Yes, the DS version’s story represents over half of the PS3 version; minus minor changes and additional dialog, plus the PS3 exclusive part of the story.

                      >Not to mention that the actual game mechanics were completely different.

Changes can be done with a remake. I never said the mechanics were the same. If I had said “port,” I would see a reason for pointing this out.

If you’re debating whether or not it’s a remake with additional content, that piece of information is completely irrelevant

                    • Budgiecat

They kinda were both announced at the same time so no it wasnt a remake.

                    • Pyrofrost

IIRC correctly, the PS3 version of the game was announced a mere few months before the actual release of the DS version.
Mainly in preparation for Level 5’s TGS show in 2010.

                    • Elvick

I’m sorry, but the addition of the White Witch and all that comes with it is pretty significant.

They didn’t just slap in some content to the end and a mention here or there before that. Not sure where people got that idea.

The entire game on PS3 revolves around her until you actually get to the content to the end, in multiple ways.

It’s not called “and the White Witch” for no reason. Go back and remove every single aspect, including characters, who are related to the White Witch. The game would be empty without her on PS3.

                    • Pyrofrost

I never said the additions weren’t significant. They are significant. I’m also not ripping the PS3 version in any way, just to be clear.

I was just saying the DS version’s story represents a large portion of the game. I more or less see the PS3 version’s story as the DS’s story + an expansion (like Graces F or Persona 3 FES).
The DS’s story can stand on its own just fine, but the additions to the PS3’s story fills out the plot and closes gaps (like the Future Arc in Graces or The Answer in Persona 3). The main difference between those games and Ni no Kuni is that it didn’t just stick it all at the end, plot points were added throughout as well.

              • FitzpatrickPhillips

That makes no sense. If you can understand the japanese version, why wait months? I can read and understand japanese so I don’t buy the localized versions of games.

The people who support the localizations are those who can’t.

                • $83030187

I already said it was a joke.

                  • FitzpatrickPhillips

                    Ah, whoops. My bad~ :D

                • phayroent

Man, you are ignorant. There are plenty of fluent people that would rather support the localization. How do you think localization happens? You may be fluent, but you aren’t very bright.

                  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Localization happens when people want the game in their own language because they cannot understand the native language and/or the software is region locked. You think the majority of sales come from people who have complete access to the game in its native form? What planet are you on?

                • Budgiecat

                  He doesn’t understand Japanese.

And a big NO to your last sentence. Get a fucking clue

            • Budgiecat

I doubled dipped for Hokuto no Ken (first time I got it I had no idea it would be localized) and will for JJBA (same).

          • 永次

Why will he support the west launch?

            • Anime10121

Unless he’s fluent in Japanese… maybe so he can actually understand it :/

              • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Don’t need to be fluent for video games

                • Anime10121

In any other genre but JRPG and I’d agree with you. But there’s RARELY an rpg I’ll play because its gameplay is so much better than any others. JRPGs put a LOT of focus on their plots and characters, and many games (like the TitS series) are nigh unplayable without understanding the language. I just don’t see how one can get enjoyment out of a genre who’s biggest focus is usually on plot…

But then again it all just boils down to opinion, and mines seems to differ from yours as far as enjoyment goes.

                  • Pyrofrost

About the Kiseki games, that series is in a league of its own when it comes to script size and the sheer amount of text. It is very rare to run across any JRPG that can even stand in its shadow.

                  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Umm I don’t think this is a JRPG

Why are you arguing with me about a game I’m paying money for and will be enjoying by myself

Sounds like I understand more Japanese than you assume I do

                    • Budgiecat

Yes it is. It’s a Japanese action RPG with a heavy emphasis on character driven plot elements.

Drakengard was never heralded for its gameplay. The biggest thing that gave it it’s cult following was it’s story.

                    • Pyrofrost

It has some JRPGish qualities, but I wouldn’t exactly call it a full on JRPG.
Budgiecat is right about story and character development playing a huge role though.

I wouldn’t worry so much about people getting on you about importing. There will always be people doing that and accusing us of hurting the industry. Most people don’t realize how little the number of importers really are; while others are simply just haters.

                    • Anime10121

Well action rpg, whatever, it still has a big focus on story.

And I wasn’t arguing at all, I apologize if it came out that way (though rereading my comments, they still come out more inquisitive than argumentive, but what evs :P ).

I also said that if you understand Japanese, I understand you importing… Seems like you’re reading far more into my comments than what they’re actually sayin.

          • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Depends on the game, if Fairy Fencer F gets localized I won’t import the game because I’ve beaten it 3 times already going for the platinum, other games like action ones I’ll probably support. Toukiden for example where I wasn’t able to understand all of the ancient Japanese I’ll get

        • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

          Yep ^^

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Yeah but I’ve had it pre ordered for awhile

        • Budgiecat

          cancel it

          • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

            Why though?

  • Renaldi Saputra

oh beyblade, maybe the lowest score I’ve seen for famitsu’s

  • bloodiOS

I’m loving those Drakengard 3 scores! Importers! Please inform the community of the game’s performance (regarding screen-tearing and frame drops) once you got your hands on your copy.

  • Arcana Gear

…… beyblade gotten a bad score, i never played a Beyblade game since gba, and didnt know of the existence of this game until now, but still sad cause it was my childhood.

Glad to see this score for drakengard 3! it really seems interesting, cant wait to get it.

Injustice got a 30…. interesting, but again japan isnt in manly superheroes super ripped and blood stuff.

    Madoka…. intereting.

  • miyamoto

My Panzer Dragoon fix is getting nearer!

  • Jerry Hu

Drakengard 3 really gets a high scores. I hope it will have Chinese version, please.
