Namco Bandai will announce its 20th anniversary Tales title tomorrow, December 12 via a Nico Nico live stream. The countdown site saw its final update today:

beautiful piece of art, cant wait to hear more about it.
I will most definitely be pulling an all-nighter waiting for this news!
Also, with the color added, it definitely looks like there are some ruins within that rock.
it could be a city…
That’s possible too.
I’m tired of waiting though, just under 18 hours remaining WOOOOOO!
well, whatever is beneath that mist, heh…that is interesting too…
has anyone clicked on the “next tales of” on the page?A sound of a beast roaring appears.Just as I feared…it wouldn’t be just after the countdown.Oh well,in my country,it will be by when I wake up.
I AM EXCITE!!! Unless it’s a mobile game, in which case. Damn….
Luckily tomorrow I can watch this.
Can’t wait to see it. I’ll finally be able to decide if it’s all aboard the hype train or if it’s time for me to get off.
ONCE YOU ENTER THE HYPE TRAIN,NO BACKING OUT,buddy!sorry for caps lock, just kidding.Still,it is the 20th,they won’t screw this.If you need reference, well, abyss was the 10th…and abyss, well,is simply one of the best in the series…one of the finest rpgs in the PS2 and in the 3ds,even after 8 years.
I’ve played through Abyss. It’s actually the only game in the series I have finished.
well,I saw people claming that it was the only game in the series they COULDN’T finish, lol.Well, just details.Have you played symphonia at least?
:/ oh well,at least you finished up abyss.
Definitely my favorite entry in the series. Hopefully it’s close to being as good.
Lol it was the first one I played and the only one I beat. Hated it to hell and I can’t remember why.
maybe Luke’s warming personality irked you so much you gave up on the game?Well,it irked me to the point I wanted to strangle him manyyyy times.Well, later he gets better, way better.
16 hours more?? Sheesh
It will be a masterpiece like the 95% of mothership Tales of.
Which one are you holding in lower esteem?
Chrono Trigger and Earthbound are masterpieces.
People are entitled to think what they want as long as they don’t hurt or offend anyone. Just because you don’t like something as much as something else doesn’t make them wrong.
Just like I’m entitled to think what I want?
They stated their opinion, then I stated mine in return.
I would leave it at that except you started with “Ehh-” as if to say “No, that’s wrong” then you went on to tell him that chrono trigger and Earthbound were masterpieces as if to correct him and understand this I mean nothing against those two games I’m just letting you know what your comment looks to other people.
“Ehh” as in “I don’t know if I’d go that far”, but whatever. Let’s not draw this out into an argument.
Because once they start, I find it hard to stop, and I don’t want to get banned from yet another site.
Alright but let me just ask you one thing, I promise that I won’t reply at all no matter what answer you give.
Why are you on this thread or any of the other tales threads for that matter? It seems obvious you don’t like the series at all and you don’t have to leave your comments complaining that just seem to spark arguments about the series so why bother saying anything at all?
Doesn’t seem obvious to me that he doesn’t like the series. Calm down bro.
Can we PLEASE let this go, and stop trying to create something, where there is in-fact nothing.
There is nothing more in his reply to Cara than disagreement with the idea that Tales is a masterpiece. It’s not like he responded, “HeY U FUKIN weBoO! TALEZZZZzzzz SUX!”
I’ve conversed with him in a few of these Tales threads. He is more someone who doesn’t really know about Tales, than someone who just doesn’t like Tales.
This site has mods already, so we don’t need net-nannies. Besides, I’m sure Cara can take care of himself in a discussion. I know this because Cara and I had a discussion where we were in disagreement the other day.
So please, let it go.
I really don’t think the entire Tales series is a “masterpiece”; I think they’ve had a few hits, a few misses, and some that work in between.
Tempest is widely regarded as an awful title (downgraded from “mothership” status to “spin-off” over the years).
Meanwhile, the other titles seem to get more praise — but generally on an uneven keel (I think Abyss is one of the best, but I know many will disagree with me and even I think it’s still not a “masterpiece” in all respects).
I’ve also been a Tales Fan since Destiny. I don’t Xaltmas was being terribly obnoxious (despite it coming off that way), more ambivalent on what is and isn’t a masterpiece (I do think stating anything is “best” or a “masterpiece” is a trap waiting to happen though that leads to these downward-spirals).
I don’t get the point of discussion if it immediately gets severed by “But they just stated their opinion!” — because that just becomes ironic. x)
I don’t think I have ever stated that I don’t like the series, but I wouldn’t call myself a fan either.
Tales is a series that I have always had a passing interest in, but I have never jumped on board with because of reasons.
I’m always going to keep an eye on the franchise, just in case the next entry is the one that grabs me.
Hi Gematsu, I have never played a tales game and think it’s good time to start. which game should i start with, I have a 3DS, a PS3 and a PS2. So I can buy any tales game that is on these consoles.
Depends. Graces ƒ (PS3) has great combat, people tend to not like the story (was fine enough for me) and people also have issue with the characters (agree on that one).
Haven’t played Xillia yet.
Symphonia was my first Tales, and Symphonia Chronicles is coming soon to PS3. So you can play it, and the awful sequel. :P
Tales of the Abyss is on 3DS and PS2, not sure which is better there.
The 3DS version of Abyss is superior, since it eliminated the PS2 version’s incredibly long loading times.
I would say PS2 solely for the multiplayer, but 3DS has portability and better load times…
I recommend you start with tales of legendia, then abyss, if you willing to wait then do symphonia on ps3 then graces f on ps3 then xillia
Its like Elvick said, in graces the combat is crazy good (at least for me) so i think if you play that first you wont enjoy the titles that came before it
I wouldn’t start with Legendia, really. It’s quite different from other Tales games, especially in…quality. Not a bad game, I just wouldn’t recommend starting with it. I’d say look it up after playing another Tales game, see if it interests you and then play it.
I have to agree here. Legendia is an acquired taste, and you REALLY need to be a Tales fan to enjoy it.
Wow your avatar is Elizabeth!!! XD
Sorry, I just realised that because it wasn’t until last week that I started Persona 3. My first title in the series :)
Are you enjoying it? Which version are you playing? How far along are you?
I am absolutely loving it!!!! I’d never played something like it before. The Social Links are so adictive!
I’m playing P3P on my PSP. I just finished the Midterms and I’m on floor 17 of Tartarus. Akihiko just recovered :)
Hmm, I replied to you, but I don’t know what happened to the message. Anyway, it was something like this:
I’m absolutely loving it! I had never played something like that before. I love the dating-sim side of it.
And… I’m playing P3P (Male protagonist). I’m on floor 20 or so in Tartarus, one week after the first exams (Midterms). Stuff is evolving between Chihiro and me <3 but also Yuko, lol!
I’m really glad to see you’re liking it.
Also, Chihiro and Yuko were a couple of my favorite waifus in that game.
Tales fan or Go Shiina fan. That soundtrack is beautiful.
I wouldn’t disagree with that for one second.
Legendia is the only one I have, lol… It’s pretty!
Any of them will do just fine but I recommend starting the oldest ones first so you won’t be spoiled by the newer ones much better battle systems.
Definitely play Abyss. It’s my favorite one. PS2 or 3Ds version, doesn’t matter. Depends on if you’d prefer portability or big screen.
Then there’s Symphonia HD coming in just a few months and it’s a lot of peoples favorite one so I recommend that one too. Very charming story and graphics. Some call it the FFVII of the Tales series.
After that I’d go to Graces f which has one of the best battle systems so far if not a little simple. Story was alright and it’s much more streamlined than past games but the battle system and colorful world make up for it.
I can’t really say much about Xillia since I didn’t get very far in it. Personally, I didn’t like the bit I played and not much about the game appealed to me but some other people seem to think it’s a decent game.
If you can read Japanese, I’d recommend importing Vesperia PS3.
Vesperia is still my all-time favorite in the series.
Followed closely by Destiny, Destiny 2, Phantasia, and Rebirth.
Overall, the cast of characters are one of my favorites of any Tales game. Great world, side quests and very pretty. Only reason I can’t call it my favorite is because after playing Graces, I couldn’t go back to Vesperia’s battle system. It just felt so slow and clunky where as Grace’s is fast and fluid.
If Vesperia has Graces’ battle system, I’d title Vesperia as the best Tales game.
Though if you asked me what was my favorite Tales game a few years ago, I’d probably say Vesperia :)
Yeah, that tends to happen when playing more modern games. Though I think it’s a bit generational, rather than something people decide on their own.
I think people who have more experience with ‘older games’ tend to find it easier to go back and play older or older styled games. I’m not saying this applies to everyone, I’m just saying this in a more general manner.
Destiny DC, Rebirh, Phantasia PSP and Destiny 2 are… are… mother of god, God made game.
I don’t like Vesperia at all.
While we disagree on Vesperia, I completely agree with the rest.
I don’t like because the battle system, compared with those games, Vesperia is… “mmhee”, but the other things are good as always.
I’ve played all the mothership titles, and I like them all.
A good entry title for anyone getting into the series now days, I would recommend Tales of Xillia. All-around it’s a good, solid, user friendly installment; with no real weak points.
Definitely start with Tales of the Abyss, probably better to get the 3DS version (I’m not positive, but I think it has vastly reduced load times compared to the PS2 version).
Tales of Symphonia is a good place to start! Then go to Vesperia, Abyss, Xillia but, you should never go near Graces F… I’m afraid that my power would not be able to protect you once you get there.
well, symphonia chronicles for PS3(only on USA in feb)…abyss 3ds…xillia PS3…any of the three are great…but this is the best order to play them,I think.
Screw vesperia, for it is XBOX360…and well,be careful with gracesF PS3.
My friend and I played xillia for 4 hours today to celebrate the announcement. It’s gonna be at 5 am for us, so… =___=;
I almost think I should skip school
Well,don’t.School is important.Besides,this game won’t run away.
Nah, I wasn’t gonna lol
I’m just hoping for a snow day or something…
Wrong school is not important. At least not pre-post-secondary. Besides at this time of year all there is, is finals which are barf.
Go Shiina as composer please?
One day it’d be great to get him back again. Fingers crossed it’s this time, but…
Please oh please oh PLEASE!!!
Or perhaps Motoi Sakuraba would be again the composer.
I want an open-world Tales game, something like Xenoblade and the upcoming X.
An open-world, cel-shaded, action JRPG. I’d buy one of those even if it had TWO child characters in your party.
>TWO child characters in your party
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa; hold the fucking phone xD LMAO
Hey, if concessions have to be made.
I was mainly being silly, but I will be completely honest here. Well, part honest, part silly
I consider Xenoblade a masterpiece; however, multiple child PT characters in a Tales game is NOT a good idea. It only worked in Vesperia because one of them was in-fact, not a child.
Please don’t kill the new game before it comes out ;-;
I still need to play Xenoblade. It looks incredible, but even used copies are crazy expensive.
Wii U port, plz Nintendo.
You haven’t played it yet?
Nope. I still need to pick up The Last Story as well.
Oh man, it was on black friday sale at Gamestop too. They gutted tons of new ones and sold them as used.
I will say this much and people can agree, disagree, up-vote, down-vote, or whatever. Xenoblade is one of the very best JRPGs ever made, imo. I say that as someone who has been playing them well over 20 years.
In my opinion, Xenoblade is exceptional and a true masterpiece.
The Last Story is good as well, it doesn’t hold a candle to Xenoblade, imo, but it’s still really good.
The way Nintendo of America handled Xenoblade has been disappointing.
X looks absolutely incredible, so I pray they don’t make the same mistake twice.
Yeah, they were pretty shitty about the way they treated it
Hopefully that game showed Nintendo that there is an audience for that stuff in the west.
I won’t be satisfied until Nintendo funds a AAA JRPG from Mistwalker for Wii U as an apology.
Not even ‘X,’ which they are funding?
For some strange reason, the majority of the JRPGs that I’m interested in are on Nintendo platforms.
Bravely Default & Bravely Second
The Last Story
I don’t know why, but I would very much like more of them. Sakaguchi and those at Mistwalker are wasted on iOS games.
Given the immensely positive reactions X has been getting, they should go after Mistwalker and go for a twofer.
I sure wouldn’t mind another Mistwalker affair, something along the lines of Lost Odyssey.
Surprisingly, Arc Rise Fantasia was also a pretty decent game, if you can get past the shitty voice acting and the fact that it was localized by Ignition.
I just couldn’t. Arc RF had VA worse than the most horrid 70s to 80s dubs I’ve ever heard. There’s not many times I can say that the thing that turned me away from a game was something as minor as VAs. But man, I couldn’t stomache more than an hour of that crap :/
I even tried playing an undub and the Japanese voices weren’t much better :/
Yeah, the voice acting in that game is above and beyond terrible. Fortunately, the game itself was engaging enough for me to push through.
I heard it was a really engaging plot and was a pretty good game overall, but I honestly wish that game was mute like a PSOne game.
If only I could mute the vocals without doing the same to the soundtrack :(
I will just blame Ignition for that. I don’t like to shit on JRPG publishers, but they honestly deserve it. They are truly terrible.
Ignition brought us the gloriousness that was Deadly Premonition, so I can’t completely hate them.
Ugh. The VA in that was…there are no words to describe it. xD
This might just be me seeing what I want to see, but it’s like the more anime JRPGs end up on Playstation platforms while more, I don’t know if you’d call them traditional, but…
Stuff like X, Xenoblade and The Last Story remind me of the kind of JRPGs I grew up with. And they all seem to be on Nintendo consoles.
I want more of those.
Well, if you remember one of the games you called a masterpiece. That was drawn by Akira Toriyama. Tales of Phantasia, which was on the SNES also used anime-ish designs, as did Star Ocean.
I would say the main reason anime-ish JRPGs didn’t really appear till the PS1 is because developers weren’t really capable of doing it before then. Even Xenoblades art is anime-ish in concept. It’s just 3D in game and not cell shaded.
Personally, I don’t mind if it’s anime styled or not, as long as the story and characters aren’t soulless. If you know what I mean.
I’m mostly referring to a cookie-cutter anime style. Chrono Trigger has a style all it’s own
Except that it is shared with Dragon Ball and Dragon Quest. :P
If you are referring to something along the lines of two companies which have plagued the PS3 this gen, I will just leave them unnamed to prevent another debate from happening. :p
Yes, the voice acting wasn’t great.
I don’t think I minded it as much as most other people though. For me, most of it was passable – except for one or two VA’s who didn’t seem like they were interested. Thankfully they were minor characters.
I think a lot of people dismissed it because they saw a minute or two’s worth of YouTube footage, which is a shame. Because it’s much better than that.
It’s mighty close to my favourite RPG of last-gen.
I couldn’t agree with you more mate.
Which is why I try JRPGs for myself. I am more lenient than most people when it comes to flaws in a game, and I will likely find something in it that I adore.
Don’t have any respect for Nintendo of America these days. If they dont realize that Xenoblade, which still was able to sell 400,000 copies at Gamestop alone (compared to Japan’s 160,000 sales despite Nintendo of Japan supporting it more and even having a console bundle) and EU’s 220,000 sales, despite the sheer lack of support they had from them, then they are fucking idiots.
Cranky Kong at the VGX means they’re off to a wonderful start…
Do yourself a favor and play any and all titles with Xeno in the title (except Xenosaga ep II). They are all fantastic games.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into the Last Story, even though I loved the character art. LovedLost Odyssey though ( even though I HATED its character designs).
I have played through the entire Xenosaga trilogy. Some of my favorite games on the PS2.
Xenogears IMO is still the best Xeno title yet, and while I felt the Xenosaga trilogy as a whole was better than xenoblade, Xenoblade itself destroys any of the other Xeno titles on gameplay and on its world.
The Last Story was awesome. One of the best RPG casts this generation with a natural delivery. Syrenne was cool as fuck
You guys are joking right? Who gives a damn if they are all children so long as the game (story, gameplay, music, art) is good.
I’m not joking. That would turn me off instantly.
Well that is just stupid, but I guess you are entitled to your opinion.
It would have to have some kind of hook.
Like, all of the kids are emotional train wrecks like in Evangelion or something.
A story revolving around your average JRPG child characters is a no-go for me. If other people are down with that, then great. It’s just not for me.
Just as big hulking big nosed neanderthal Lord of the Rings/D&D clone roided Middle Age European freakazoids or Space Marines are a pandering visual annoyance, so are prepusbescent shota/loli Moe gagging Anime trope characters.
Please have some common sense middle ground RPG makers.
And learn to write better stories
shota* I personally don’t give a damn. If the game is good the characters can be any age.
Why so serious?
If you would have read just a little further, you would have realized I said I was just being silly. I am mainly referring to the fact that I find many child characters in Tales are annoying as hell.
If you had read even further, you would have realized I have been playing JRPGs over 20 years.
If you had read even further, you would have realized that I love the entire Tales series and I have played them all.
As a hardcore JRPG gamer, I understand that the strong points that carry a JRPG are it’s story and character development. So I really don’t need you to educate me on this dear, I assure you.
So don’t attack me, I’m on your side here. I want more good JRPGs.
I see well Xaltmas was being serious at least. And why did you call me dear? That is slightly… odd.
I was just being cheeky because you attacked me. I meant nothing personal.
I do absolutely adore JRPGs though, I assure you.
I love them dearly. They make up about 95% of my game library. They are a passion of mine. However, I am a very sharp critic if the story and characters are shit.
I am more lenient than most people when it come to a JRPG’s flaws though. As I generally end up finding something to love about almost every one of them.
I would hope not. I mean at least take me out to dinner first. ;P lol
I agree completely. I just didn’t like the idea that somebody would hate the game simply because the characters are children even if they are well written.
It would be a pleasure! Who needs to go out though?
I will just cook you a divine meal myself. We can eat under dim lights by the fireplace ;p
Same here though. Personally, character age isn’t an issue to me. The only things that can make me dislike a JRPG are soulless characters and story telling;and being completely devoid of passion. Other aspects I can bear with as long as that’s up to par.
Heh. Ok well that is far enough with this joke. lol Besides I think we are both male? (Nothing wrong with homosexuals, but I am not one).
Right. Yah, for me story (and obviously the characters) are the most important. Though I’d like the gameplay to be at least functioning. Art isn’t so much an issue, and well if sounds aren’t good I can simply mute.
Yeah, I’m male, but I figured I’d help keep up the joke xD
I’m about the same. I will criticize the other aspect if they are bad, but I can deal with it. As far as gameplay, I have very rarely run across a JRPG that I find unplayable when it comes to gameplay aspects.
I just finished reading an older article where Baba said thats his dream game to make; something along the likes of Skyrim or Dragon’s Dogma..
That would be incredible.
Xenoblade was also in that list IIRC.
He was referring to them in the context of how utterly MASSIVE they are and the amount there are to do, that’s it.
Which I agree with! If you combine Tales art, soundtracks, story telling, and character development; with the size and content of Skyrim, Dragon’s Dogma, and Xenoblade…you have yourself a god tier game imo.
I am beyond excited I now feel confident us in the West will receive every console tale games due to its growing popularity and postive sales. I just hope this Tales has some bad ass cast of characters like Yuri.
It’d be cool if they kept in that choice mechanic in ToX2.
So, is there going to be some kind of live-stream event before the trailer, or is it just going to be BOOM trailer?
If it’s the former, I might just wait to watch it when I wake up.
I am guessing just boom trailer. Or at least like Atlus did.
You mean troll the hell out of us for an hour? :P
That was hilarious.
Man i want some cool as cast please!!!!
Here is my guess.. Tales of Zexerzia for PS4, if not then “tales of” “random name for PS3.
My guess is a Mothership on PS3, a new ‘R’ on Vita, and a few spin-off fitting various genres being spread around. I’m expecting a good bit with it being the 20th anni.
Since NamcoBandai is behind im@s, I am really hoping for a spin-off to be a Tales rhythm game. I absolutely LOVE Tales OSTs, and this would be great for a portable game, on the go.
last time everyone asked for R (PS Vita) localization, they denied and said PS Vita is sturggleing in US, soo yeah. Also they are announcing one game lool not 5 games like Atlus is doing with Persona next year.
I thought we were guessing :o
I just wanted to guess too ;-;
Besides, Baba already started that he wanted to do ‘various things’ with Tales for the 20th anni.
Whether or not he announces one, all, or even most of it tonight is another story, but I’m sure we will be getting more than just a mothership title for the anniversary. They’ve never need a reason to do remakes and spin-offs before, now they couldn’t have a better one..
Sorry D: I tought you were being serious, I just reread your last comment :/ Sorry for being mean -__- anyway my guess is… Surprise!!! X3 haha PS4 PS4 PS4
Or PS3 game..
No problem mate!
And I was more or less being serious about what I would like to see. :3
Sweet :D I would love to see an open world Tales of game for once like FF XV is doing right now (I think it’s open world??)
Under two hours remaining!
Can you feel it~
I happened to be awake playing Persona 1, but yeah, getting excited *_*
I wonder if the new game will have multi-POV? I liked that in Xillia (not sure if that was in the sequel…)
Ohhhh, that’s a very good game!
Nah, multi PoV isn’t in Xillia 2. They went with multiple endings in that one, and a silent protag with player choices.
I love multiple endings as much as I love different player routes *_*
THEY NEED TO SHOW GAMEPLAY.
itd be pretty underwhelming if i stayed awake so late just to see an anime cutscene
Less than 1 hour remaining ^_^
The feed is currently open on nico.
It’s also LIVE on Twitch.tv
You can view it here:
I’m awake for some reason. xD
I understand there are people who loved Graces,I did too,but I would rather have a game like symphonia-abyss-vesperia-xillia-xillia2.Shit,woke up one hour too soon, slept and had a fucking dream that this game’s theme was gonna be friendship and trust, with some courage in too.Woke up just after.
IT BEGINS,GET READY.
Whoa! Opened with Eternia on screen :o
Eternia was one of the first.Well, let’s see how this plays out.shit, slow guy.Just go for the goods, can’t even understand you properly.Shit,it’s lagging.Great.
I can’t seem to open the link provided above for the nico stream. It’s directing me to buy premium account >.<
weird.with me it worked, maybe you clicked the wrong link.
There should be a view as regular member link.
Or you can watch on twitch:
Not a problem! ^_^
Whose the msn talking? I hope it isn’t to long until the actual reveal :3
someone need to catch that trailer so I can watch it with more…attention.Man,that was badass.Looks like we will have an open field…perhaps xenoblade style.
Is Baba the last?He is on now!Well,he is the producer…don’t know who they could possible have talk after this.
IT STARTED THE TRAILER!
TALES OF ZESTIRIA!
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WORLD!WHAT A GRAND WORLD!
I am crying. The protagonists are so beautiful…and the main one looks rather badasses…
man!I am so happy I almost written everything on my main language, lol!
Tales of Zestiria! =)
Yep, no surprise there.
The male character looked like he was holding a book? Male = magic user, female = knight warrior?
he punched an enemy.i don’t know.maybe he has more than one way of fightning.
Oh, he did? Then yeah, you’re right, it could be a combination of things…
they are introducing the caracters.Someone who understands what the hell they are talking, write it down, and translate it,and post it here in this page.By next month they should be giving us info on the rest of the party.Man,hope it is this month.
Well Nico Nico is lagging and disconnecting for me, but at least I saw the trailer, lol.
Chat with you guys later about this =D
Let’s move the discussion over here. http://gematsu.com/2013/12/tales-of-zestiria-announced-for-playstation-3
Reminds me of Graces.
I look forward to the actual game containing nothing like that to explore.
Exactly what I was thinking.
I got that vibe from the initial Xillia concept art..
It kinda does now that mention it.
Can’t wait to see the actual characters.
I don’t know how the Tales team approved such a terrible overworld and consciously said “damn this is great!”.
