Things that bug me about the PlayStation 4 UI

Little things that I'd like Sony to address in future updates.

The PlayStation 4 user interface is smooth, fast, and gets the job done. But there are a number of little things bugging me that I’m hoping Sony will address in the near future.

Here’s what I think needs improvement:

  • The Library needs sorting options. It automatically sorts games by last played, but offers no option to sort games alphabetically, etc.
  • The Library groups together games and apps. There should be folders separating the two.
  • The Library is tied to the network, showing all of your downloaded games and apps, even if they’re not installed. For this reason, you cannot:
    1. Access the Library without being connected to the network.
    2. Remove games from the Library. This wouldn’t be a problem for purchased games, as the convenience of quickly accessing a game, even if it’s not downloaded and installed to the system, is a welcome one. But downloaded demos, even when deleted, forever appear in the Library. I played the FIFA 14 demo and deleted it when I was done. But I can’t remove it from my Library. Now imagine every demo you ever download never leaving your library.

Home Screen

  • Currently, I have five games installed, all of which appear on the home screen. I’m beginning to wonder how many games it’ll take before the home screen becomes too cluttered. And it’s already looking cluttered as it is.
  • The Playroom, Music Unlimited, and Video Unlimited are all perma-glued to the home screen. I don’t use these.
  • Perhaps this is just my own OCD, but I feel like “TV and Video,” “Internet Browser,” and “Live from PlayStation” should always be together, at the end of the horizontal scroll, next to Library.

Game Page

  • Each game’s ‘Game Page’ is tied to the network. If the network is down or if you’re not connected, you won’t have access to the game manual (which is browser-based) or trophies chart that regularly appear below games.

What’s New

  • “Mr. Smith earned a trophy from Resogun.” Click. “View content info” for Resogun. Click. Overview, recent activities, and related items are empty. “View content info” only appears when the game is installed on your hard-drive. Otherwise, a “View in PS Store” option will appear. “View content info” should show the same information you see in a title’s ‘Game Page’ on the home screen. But it shows nothing but empty fields.
  • You can’t leave comments. Only Likes. This isn’t really much of a complaint, but it’d be nice to be able to do.

  • If a friend is shown as now playing [Game Name Here] on his or her profile, I can’t click it to access the content / PlayStation Store page.
  • The option to receive an notification when a friend signs in would be appreciated.
  • Let me change my PlayStation Network ID. Charge me $5, I don’t mind. (Okay, maybe that’s not a user interface concern, but still.)

  • Game list and trophies cannot be sorted by name, date earned, etc.
  • You can’t press the PlayStation button to view a trophy’s details when you earn it.

Really great ideas! I like what you said about the changes to the library and had no idea a deleted demo would still remain there. Maybe because they want you coming back for more? Who knows…

    • drproton

Demos remaining in the download list is a holdover from the PS3. It’s a huge annoyance for people like me with 300+ items in their download list.

      • Bangarang

Yeah, I agree. I know they remain in the DL list, but @salromano mentioned they remain in the Library. Either way, I’d like to see some sort of clean up option :)

        • Zackasaur

The Library is the new name for the Downloads list.

          • Bangarang

Really? Interesting! So it’ll show in the Library, as well as in the Downloads section under Notifications…and in the PS Store?

          • Bobby Jennings

Oh really? That’s nice to know.

      • NeoTechni

        I have double that

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Honestly i have over 400+ items in my download list.

    • Anime10121

Me too. We need folders. I have no idea who thought it was a good idea to start this gen off with less features than the last. I mean even (should be) basic features like folders and the ability to play mp3s are missing and on both consoles nonetheless, it’s mind boggling.

      • Lelouch Vi Britannia

and that’s why the day a hacker officially releases a Usb drive that you can install to your PS4 to play all your PS1,PS2, and PS3 games on disc is the day I buy a PS4 slim, and never take that system online. I love SONY but the lack of extra features irritates me and shows how Greedy they and Microsoft both are. Maybe lack of Backwards Compatiblity may sound ok to some but i wanna be able to play my PS3 games on PS4 w/o having to use that Gaikai service which I know SONY will try to shove down our throats.

        • usagi_san

You think people are “OK” with it? It is just some people are in the know of why it is not possible. A console that plays all (disc-based) games from their extensive catalogue is nothing more than a fantasy for some.

The only thing you can is keep your old consoles, if you need to play your older titles so much.

    • NeoTechni

      700+ for me

  • EspadaKiller

Yeap good points. But it’s still way too early so we will probably see some changes to the UI next year. Hope that we can have folders lol. And yeah change of name is good too (Shu said they are looking into it though).

  • MrFinalgamer

weird. some of these things were addressed on vita. why would they go back a few steps when they already did something right?

    • Zancrow

Dunno, but it shows that they aren’t exactly “finished” with everything on the PS4.
Hope they sort this out by the time I come around buying one.

  • Anime10121

These all sound like pretty big issues. Though fortunately, issues that can be (and hopefully WILL BE) fixed with patches. I’m still hopefully that one day they will announce that we can pay to change our PSN id.

Hell at this point, I’d be willing to pay $20 for the abilility, as I fudging HATE my gamer tag…. Gimmedat, man what the hell was I thinking :( I want anime10121 to be my gamertag SO BAD. I’ve been using this username since the early ps2 era back when Game Trailers forums were the place to be… Don’t know y I changed it to something as generic as “Gimmedat” :(

    • MrFinalgamer

      i feel your pain =(

  • Dokuro

So you can change your ID now? that’s cool.

    • captainhowdy

No you can’t, not yet anyways.

  • DarthBrian

“Let me change my PlayStation Network ID. Charge me $5, I don’t mind.”

Sony was asked about this and I believe it was Shu who said that it’s not that easy to do. At least that’s what the engineers are telling him. They probably screwed something up when they designed the PSN databases. That’s my guess.

    • Sal Romano

      That’s what I assume.

In a separate interview with IGN, though, he said it’s not impossible, but difficult.

    • 武神水樹

He said it’s not easy to do but not impossible. The engineers are lazy

      • Lelouch Vi Britannia

lazy is one way to put it. But the word I know to be true is “Greedy”.

        • Sal Romano

If they were greedy, they would do it.

Think of all them 5 dolla bills.

          • Elvick

            Would pay for sure.

I hope that mid-generation, they’ll have most important features out of the way and will have some spare men to tackle this.

Of course, then they could be working on PS5 or w/e.

      • Elvick

They aren’t lazy, it’s just a massive investment of time and resources.

Do they drop every other feature that they’re working on to focus on one complex and minor issue? (and despite how much we want it, changing our username is minor)

Their time is better used on other things.

    • DesmaX

Well, I just got my GTA V copy, and tried to log-in in Social Club.

All fine, but I didn’t like the ID I had set up for it (I had played GTA IV on the PC before), so I changed.

All coll and all, but it did show me “You can only change your ID every year”, in which it does imply that it’s a pretty expensive process for the servers

  • Keegs79

I wish they would allow you to have a long introduction about myself. Having the same small letter count is pathetic. I want to be able to say who I am and such. I would at least like the minimum on the 360.

I also wish there was an app or integration for leaderboards.

So far I am really enjoying it and really like how you can tell what trophies are rare and which ones are common. I like how you can be downloading a game and play it as it does but this seems to me more of a workaround from previous generations that needed no ridiculous huge install. It helps people from being outraged by it.

  • shogunknight

I hope you passed these points to Mr.Yoshida on twitter or the playstation support. Would make a great 2.0 firmware update

    • Sal Romano

I sent @yosp and @amboyes a tweet. Hopefully they’ll respond, which means they’ve at least looked at it. I wouldn’t mind a helping hand at the tweeting, though, guys!

      • colonel179

Excellent points Sal! Specially the Library points. I don’t have a PS4 yet, but I can see myself going crazy by not being able to delete the demos, and sort stuff.

In the home screen, I already sent a tweet to Yoshida about having to be customizable. Just like Vita, you should be able to move the tiles around and sort them as you want where you want them, and the auto sorting by recent used should be entirely optional.

It seems weird that some of things you mention are already in the PS3, like sorting trophies. Sony is looking like Apple right now. Apple loves to removes basic features when releasing new software, maybe Sony is into it too.

  • Zefhar

    I lol’d @ “perma-glued”

  • Steven Then

While I am playing a game, I do not see any notification that my friend has signed on. Does anyone else experience this?

  • Sieghardt

Interesting article, some of them arent faults but just plain good ideas they should implement, like the comments and link to game they’re playing.

  • artemisthemp

Hopefully Sony fix a lot of this issue in the next 1.x update.

Specially not been able to leave comment on activity is stupid, since Vita have been able to that from the start.

  • hush404

Agreed with most. Especially the sorting on the main screen. I’m someone who buys and plays lots of games. Look at my PS3, I’ve got upwards of 200 games sectioned into PSN, PS3 full games, PS2, PS1 and demos. If it wasn’t for sorting on that system, it’d be a mess.

  • NeoTechni

    1) please DONT let people change their names. I have a hard enough time keeping track of who people are

    2) i agree with everything else. Music and video unlimited should be in that video and tv folder, and be renamed apps. We also should be able to make folders for games. The current menu system is only a bit better than DSi’s one dimensional list. The xmb is vastly superior

    3) no customization options at all? Come on! Even psp had wallpapers and themes. Even xone lets you pick a color scheme. Id literally pay to have the xmb back.

    4) no videos/photos/music support? This is barely better than wiiu in terms of multimedia. The only saving grace is dvd and bluray playback. Come on sony! You mean to tell me the psp/ps3/vita guys didnt make their code reusable?

    • Matt Dickinson

that’s a good point, the first one… people who are getting bullied online would want to stay away from a creep but he’d change his name to keep going after them.

      • Ralazar

I would assume that if you block someone, then they would remain blocked even after they change their name, no?

        • Matt Dickinson

Maybe so, I don’t know how it works

  • Elvick

“I played the FIFA 14 demo and deleted it when I was done. But I
can’t remove it from my Library. Now imagine every demo you ever
    download never leaving your library.”

Haven’t played a demo… so this didn’t dawn on me, but this is lame. So now I just won’t play any demos. That really bugs me. I love that on Android you can just delete the stuff from your purchased list. (wish you could delete shit games from Steam too)

  • ayb_91

Most of them are very bugging. If I were him, I would notice the same things. So, you don’t get notified if a friend signs in !? The hell Sony !!?

  • danielf823

I would like to have a feature where you can see your rarest trophies. Or sort trophies by rarity

  • SOLOmio

rush the work that what we get!
game makers and console makers are being really lazy now a days!!!
(Valhalla knights) is a good example of laziness!!!

  • PrinceHeir

ughh they really need to patch this like the digital manuals being online only(so stupid)

  • Marko

Great list. Forward this to Sony!!! It can be a great interface. Just needs some tweaking.

  • Solid Snake

also you cant play mp3’s or videos…why?
    and you cant pause downloads…wtf?

at the moment PS3 has a lot more features.

  • matthewpeixoto

“Game list and trophies cannot be sorted by name, date earned, etc.” This so much, I hate not having the ability to sort my trophy list by trophy completion percentage.

  • DarkMagusVII

Here’s what i want Sony to do
    – HDCP removed
    – Better BD playback
    – Play media files from USB stick
    – Custom themes

  • JoshuaManriguez198

I really hate the fact they took away the Cross Bar that was fun on the PSP and PS3

  • Ricky09

Chat and msg menus should be easily and readily available. Drilling down menus to find/send msgs is silly. Changing psn should of been available from launch, even if it’s a once per gen thing.
