Sony’s Third-Party Production team will have “at least one, if not a few announcements” within the next six months

Yakuza, Shenmue, and Final Fantasy Type-0 are fans' biggest requests.

Sony will have “at least one, if not a few announcements” from its Third-Party Production team “within the next six months,” according to Sony publisher and developer relations VP Adam Boyes.

The Third-Party Production team was first formed earlier this year, when Sony announced it was working with Gearbox to port Borderlands 2 to PS Vita. It’s a team formed to work with third-party developers to bring games to PlayStation platforms, or localize content that would otherwise not be released in the west.

Speaking to Kotaku at today’s PlayStation 4 review event in New York, Boyes said the team is “doing a lot of different things that are gonna make pockets of people happy.

“I would say in the next year’s time, if you’re a fan of Japanese games, if you’re a fan of Vita, then hopefully we’ll have a little treat for you.”

Boyes continued, “There’s not like one thing that’s gonna make everyone’s mind explode. The key is to bring people that are fans of certain content great stuff. So if people are fans of Japanese content, you can imagine that’s a place we’re putting a lot of effort into. People who are fans of the Vita, you can imagine we’re putting lots of effort into that. Even with PS4, right, people who weren’t necessarily planning on content, or whether there’s a PC game we think should come over. There’s a lot of things that are happening in that space.”

The most popular game requests, according to Boyes, include Yakuza and Shenmue. Final Fantasy Type-0 is there, too. (“It’s building the list,” according to Boyes.) These are games that PlayStation fans have been tweeting Third-Party Production boss Gio Corsi since August.

“Like everything that people have tweeted Gio, literally we have a person that compiles those lists and prioritizes based on how many requests we’ve gotten,” Boyes said. “And I think to date there’s well over 10,000 mentions across like forum threads and stuff like that. So those are the ones we’re focused on.”

When it comes to Japanese games, Sony isn’t limiting their outlook to PS Vita or PlayStation 4. PSP and PlayStation 3 games are also being considered. But with the possibility of a high-def update or up-port.

“You could imagine that every piece of content that’s come to those platforms over in Japan, we’re looking at bringing over,” Boyes said. “It’s also a balance of like, is it gonna be commercially viable if there isn’t some sort of HD remix, should it come just as the native version, should we port it up?”

A release date for Borderlands 2 on PS Vita, the Third-Party Production team’s first project, has not yet been set.

I love that they have a team dedicated to that kind of thing.

  • Fantasytales

Nice to hear something about Japanese games. I love Japanese games.

    • Arcana Gear

  • El_Kaiju

I’m excited about this news but why is Shenmue listed? That hasn’t seen a release since Shenmue 2, way back on the Dreamcast and original Xbox.

    • Arcana Gear

dont stop people spamming asking for a new one :P

    • Audie Bakerson

They said they also work to port stuff. There isn’t anything backwards compatible with the DC and the 360’s Xbox emulation is spotty. HD collection or even just plain old re-release is well within STPP’s aim.

  • Arcana Gear

Great! now all our spamming hard work will bear fruits! ^.^

Given the disappointments at E3 and Gamescom and Shahid’s hyped up games turning out to be Indie after Indie – thanks but no thanks for the treat.

Before anyone starts defending Indies – no one is saying Indie games suck – no the issue is Sony is promoting Indie games not out of charitable love and a genuine desire to see Indies grow – but out of necessity. Its unfair for anyone criticizing Sony’s stance to bring over Indies to be immediately swept into the category of “against Indies” – in fact Sony employees did exactly this over Twitter. Its not nice to act like a nice guy.

We’ll thank you once we see it. Sick of your “AMAZING NEW VITA GAME” PR spin. Amazing or not is for consumers to judge. And we can’t judge if you simply announce further announcements. Nope.

    • Elvick

Shahid wasn’t talking about an indie game…

People hyping up every event after his statement were the problem. “It’ll be at y” and it’s not, “It’ll be a x” and it’s not, “It’ll be at z”. HOW ABOUT YOU JUST FUCKING WAIT?

He gave every indication that the publisher would be the one making the call on when it eventually announces their game. Don’t even think it’s been a year since then. Games are in development a long time.

Either don’t care about it, or if you do FUCKING WAIT. It’s not hard.

No different then everyone thinking The Last Guardian will appear at every event since it’s announcement. Even now. STFU and wait, or just stop caring.

      • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

People hype because PR teases – people are desperate for news – employee comes out and says some stuff that is more like a tease than anything concrete – you misconceive the nature of the problem.

Its always the consumers’ fault for hyping up something that apparently, according to someone named Elvick, was NEVER there in the original statements. But it is interesting to note that said comments were generally made right before E3 or right before Gamescom – this certainly creates an expectation, however unjustified and illogical according to you, among consumers that something of significance will be shown. But of course its always the consumers who fail to fully comprehend the intricacies of PR and it is the consumers who are the dumb fanboys who overreact.

Its unfortunate that some has to cause such a ruckus – knowing that this will be the end result – then going back and asking the dumb fanboys to reread the fine print as nothing of significance was ever promised or teased.

3rd party production can only be judged when they deliver – their promises are as empty as the typically perceived fanboy brain.

        • Elvick

It’s not according “to someone named Elvick”.

          It’s according to reality.

          • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Its unfortunate that such a reality is perceived to be real through the consciousness of someone named Elvick.

final fantasy type 0 for psvita, tales of hearts R and tales of inocence R bring those to america

  • Elvick

I’d love to believe Tales is in there, but since it seems like Namco Bandai is incapable of doing the coding themselves and probably wouldn’t let someone else do it, I don’t think it’ll ever be that. Which is lame.

I’ll just wait and see what happens. Would be nice if they’d create a new Wild Arms for PS Vita, with Media.Vision.

    • Tetsu

Wild Arms 6 on PS4 would be the bessssst, but i’ll settle for Vita if that’s what it takes! :D

    • Raiu

I’m happy that at least someone acknowledges Wild Arms in this thread… Kudos to you, friend…

      • Elvick

One of my favorite series. ):

        • Raiu

And criminally underrated. The wild west series deserves more love. D:

  • Chestnut Bowl

It’s always nice to know that companies are indeed listening to fans of Japanese titles that may be lesser-loved in the West. I just hope it actually bears delicious fruit, though.

  • TheExile285

This time next year is a long time. Hope to see way more before then. Also, I wanna get a solid date on Borderlands 2 for Vita.

  • new_tradition

    Ngh…The hope… ;A;

I might finally pick up a Vita come Boxing Day this year, so the timing would be frickin’ amazing *_*

  • Leon Keyv

i think they should port The Last of Us to the PS4 then!

  • Tac-Mex

  • Panda

Glad to hear Shenmue was one of the most requested games.

  • bloodiOS

  • rainelee

Wouldn’t mind Type-0 on Vita or an HD port on PS3 or PS4 or both with enhanced game play and/or additional contents.

    • Budgiecat

I dunno who the three fags are that downvoted you but I being a ninja and a cat, will hunt them down!

      • rainelee

I couldn’t care less about downvotes, but I appreciate the offer, Ninja Cat-chan. :v

I think it’s kinda sad that a lot of people has to beg for games :/, i don’t remember this to happen long time ago, but good for sony bringing great games!

  • Stealth

I’m so sad I didn’t help build it up on the “list” earlier…

    FF Type 0 Damn it

  • hyuver

    Japanese Game?

The moment they announce it’s Legend of Heroes series coming to west, I will buy a PS4 to show my support for Sony, until then I will probably hold off until the next 2-4 years before considering

    • DesmaX

I would say it’s the only hope for it in the west.

The problem is getting the demand for it

      • hyuver

I think there is good chance for that. Zero no Kiseki had won the best RPG awards in Japan, Falcom only release on sony platform nowadays and have been supportive with Sony program, iirc recently I read that their game is regularly featured in PS Plus free 2 play games in Japan.

Could be just wishful thinking but really hope my intuition is right.

  • ddsfan2

Very encouraging, and about time. There are a few key titles that could earn them a lot of goodwill from gamers, if not greater market share.

  • Budgiecat

    All of them, motherfawkers!

Shenmue III, Yakuza 5, Yakuza HD collection, Shenmue HD collection, Final Fantasy Type Zero HD remaster (PS3/Vita)

    Do it!

    • shogunknight
    • TetsuyaHikari

What if they localized Ryu ga Gotoku HD Edition… But it was the Wii U version?

      Oh man, I’d lol.

  • DesmaX

I do want to see Borderlands 2 running on the Vita. Bet it would look gorgeous.

And, hey, more games the better. Probably the only chance for seeing Type-0 in the west

  • Sieghardt

I really hope they bring Yakuza 5 over, wouldnt say no to a PS4 Valkyria too guys ? :D?

  • Raiyu

Too many great PSP games were left in Japan, Last Ranker, Suikoden, Type-0, Grand Knights History, 7th Dragon 2020 (and its sequel), VC3, among others. I hope they bring most of them over here.

    • HighBrowDrifter

I played both Last Ranker (finished) and Grand Knight History (unfinished)…..and both games were quite excellent. I am certain GKH and LR would have pushed some sales in EU and US regions……what a shame.

Edit: Black Rock Shooter was actually released not too long ago, so
there are still some possibilities…..though FF-Type 0 seems
      more likely.

      • Elvick

Maybe he lives in Canada or something, BRS wasn’t released here.

        • Raiyu

I live in the states, but I didn’t even mention BRS…

          • Elvick

*shrug* should have read your comment too. :P

    • Renaldi Saputra

      umm.. re:digitize

      Zill O’ll Infinite Plus
      Rezel Cross
      Terror of the Stratus

      • TetsuyaHikari

No mention of the Eva rhythm game?! Just kidding. That game was only alright, but it was very innovative, haha.

I still remember timing jumps with the Unit 01 to the beat of the music. It was actually pretty awesome, lol.

  • MrFinalgamer

man 2014 is turning up to be amazing!
now here’s the weird thing. Shahid said he’s working on a JRPG for vita (which most of the requests were between Tales of, and Type-0). and they’re mentioning right here the amount of support that Type-0 got. so are they both talking about Type-0? or are they talking about different things?

  • Archvile

    Fingers crossed for Yakuza 5.

    • MrFinalgamer

and Ishin! might as well bring the sequel/prequel

      • Archvile

Would love the HD re-release of 1 and 2 but we’ll see.

      • TetsuyaHikari

        Ishin isn’t a sequel OR a prequel. It’s a what-if/non-canon game like Kenzan! was, silly :p

  • Wolf Star

    Type-0 for PS Vita please!!

    • MrFinalgamer

      and Valkyria Chronicles 3!

      • Wolf Star

        Yes!! That too :3

    • HighBrowDrifter

YES, Give this man a crown!

    • ShadowDivz

      Don’t toy with my heart….

      • Wolf Star

I don’t know what to say.. waiting is the best option. At least Final Fantasy XV is really coming and can’t wait to buy it :)

        • ShadowDivz

          Could imagine if it’s not?

Internet crashes from flooding of hateful comments.

    • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

How fragile is your heart? Have many times have you been tricked and left wandering because promises were broken?

Saying please is worth as much as a fart in the ocean.

      • Budgiecat

But a single fart can cause a ripple which could lead to a tsunami!!

        • TetsuyaHikari

          Are you a Hamon user?

  • Tetsu

Wow, this is really awesome news to hear.
    I love the possibilities!

It’s no doubt we’re gonna see some good stuff, really glad about this :)

  • Eclipse

It’s really nice to see that Yakuza is so highly requested.

I’d love to see a Valkyria Chronicles HD collection for PS3/PS4 & Vita.

    • Budgiecat

As well as Shenmue cmon how you leave that out

    • TetsuyaHikari

Eh, I could really do without VC2. That game was trash with its silly school shit. Give me a HD port of VC3 and I’ll be happy. At least that one was good :3

      • tokyobassist

Thank god I’m not the only person who thought VC2 was garbo. VC3 does in fact look a lot better. I wouldn’t mind even a digital release of that. Just any release other than PSP. Not a bad system but I would like to play something like that on a TV (same with Type-0).

  • Guest

I’m so ready it’s not even funny.

  • Kamille

If only… Yakuza 5 I need that game. I’m even thinking in start learning at least the basics of Japanese in a year or 2 to be able to play that game. I have already beaten Y3 & Y4 like 2 or 3 times each (still no plat cus some of the mini-games are just too hardcore for me).

    But seriously, this series it’s criminally underrated. ;___;

  • Raiu

“when we were building lists there was a massive amount of requests for
all kinds of huge IPs that are big in Japan. And those are the ones
we’re going after, based on the popularity of the requests, so you can
imagine there’s lots of… whatever games I say, [people are] gonna be
    like ‘Ahh, it’s coming!’
    ” – Adam Boyes

    The teasing… WHY!? ლ(ಠ益ಠ)ლ

  • David Robinson

This is fantastic news. I’m hyped for their announcements :D

  • Kiryu

I am really curious now what these announcements are.If Sony brings Shenmue 3 and Yakuza 5 to the west they would indeed make me a very happy gamer. ^.^

  • tokyobassist

Where’s TetsuyaHikari to shit on everybody day with “Nope not getting localized EVER!” comments?
Just trollin’ but yeah this is great news. I hope Yakuza 5 and/or Ishin gets considered for localization. I really want to play both.

    • TetsuyaHikari

Someone is calling me out D:

Also, it’s not my fault that a lot of awesome games are JP ONRY. Don’t take it out on me. I import them anyway :P

It’s weird though… You know who I am, but I have NO idea who you are @w@

      • tokyobassist

I play a lot of Japanese games too. I wasn’t trying to insult you I was just joking around because I just noticed you commented on a few articles before about Yakuza and you straight up shat on people asking for a localization lmao.

I am in half agreement with you though. If people REALLY want to play a game that bad, importing shouldn’t be an issue. You are keeping it real though. Sega sucks ass so it’s kinda of moot asking for a localization at this point but this Third-Party Production program brings back a bit of hope for those waiting an English version. I wouldn’t bring people down wanting a localization though as not understand stuff in the games like Yakuza makes it hard to fully appreciate.

        P.S. I’m tokyobassist on PSN.

        • TetsuyaHikari

Ah. I’m not trying to shit on them when saying this. It’s just that… I’d rather them not get their hopes up, that’s all. This is Sega of America after all.

I’d rather them be more cautiously optimistic instead of putting all their eggs in one basket and being like, “COME ON! YAKUZA 5! GIVE US ISHIN TOOOOOOOOOOOO!!” cause that will likely lead to heartbreak, which has already happened time after time again. Honestly, it’s also difficult for me to care about a localization when I import them.

So, if NA never got another Ryu ga Gotoku game localized, it wouldn’t really affect me any. I guess that makes me a jackass, but that’s the truth. Does that mean I don’t want other people to experience the games? No.

What it does mean though is that people should keep their options open and remember they can always import it, if necessary.

  • Raoni Marques

I’m patiently waiting Sony. Don’t let me down.
