PS4 sells through one million on day one in North America

High sales for PlayStation 4's weekend debut.

PlayStation 4 sales surpassed one million units sold through during the first 24 hours after it became available in North America this past Friday, November 15, Sony announced.

The number is the highest ever for a new console launch. PS2 shipped and sold 500,000 during its first weekend in North America, 600,000 in Japan, and 165,000 in the United Kingdom. PlayStation 4, of course, has yet to launch in Europe and Japan, but will hit both territories on November 29 and February 22, respectively.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal,” Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO Andrew House said. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

Congrats Sony! This is a huge achievement.
It also shows that console gaming is bigger than ever and that they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
I’ll be buying a PS4 next Summer, but to all who have gotten/are getting there PS4’s at launch: Have fun!
Also, thanks to the Moderators of Gematsu for making the wait for the next gen so much easier and less dramatic than other website/journalists. I’ll be coming to Gematsu throughout this gen and the next (so on and so forth)!

    • http://zefhar.deviantart.com Zefhar

Exactly my thoughts. Be it hardcore gamers or casual players, Gaming is at its strongest ever.

      • miyamoto

“Gaming is at its strongest ever.”

        Well Said!

  • bloodiOS

I wonder if it’ll surpass the Wii U’s sales in North America before New Year.

  • DarkLegacy

Congratulations Sony! That’s great news :D

    • Wolf Star

      Yep :)

  • http://zefhar.deviantart.com Zefhar

    Wow… impressive!

Is supply keeping up? or is there a shortage given the demand?

    • GhostNomad

Friend of mine who works at BestBuy said that Sony didn’t make it clear when they’ll be getting any new stock. Not that it’s impossible to find a couple of loose units here and there but as far as stocking up the shelves, holidays are pretty much everyone’s guess with anything before that being highly unlikely.

    • DesmaX

Yup, most stores are out of it.

And apparently there won’t be any more until next year

  • Learii

nice nice just what I like to see from sony =D

  • LordKaiser

If The Xbox One sells more it will be because of Titan Fall and those…

    • Luna Kazemaru

Titan fall is a launch window game not day one if i remember

    • DesmaX

      Well, Titanfall does look great

      • AdamBoy64

        It does look really good.

It’s unfortunate it’s not out till February, as it’s shaping up to be a great game.

    • Northstar

      FPS sells more on PC.

    • miyamoto

Will wait for Titan Fall sequel for PS4 though

  • Wolf Star

I’m feeling it’s going to be like Ps2 Era all over again. Congrats Sony!! :)

    • LordKaiser

That would be cool but it will only be that way if games are done with more substance. Especially RPGs

      • EX+

I think that the PS4 can bring back JRPGs in an epic fashion. Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III are just examples. I know they’re not exclusives, but let’s face it. The Xbone versions are gonna sell like dogsh*t and the PS4 is gonna run both games better.
Even though western games have taken somewhat of a hold on the market, I can see Japanese devs and publishers collecting a lot of revenue and release a lot more games at a faster rate due to how easy it is to develop for the PS4.

        • DesmaX

Ok, tell me the reason why those games are going to do poorly there

          • EX+

JRPGs didn’t sell well on the 360 to begin with. ESPECIALLY cartoony/less realistic ones (if you know what I mean). So with the XBO, it’s gonna be even worse.

            • DesmaX

But, are Final Fantasy games doing bad there? I mean, XIII-2 and LR are coming to the 360 too, and Square isn’t the type of company that would do this stuff to “make fans happy”.

And Kingdom Hearts is a pretty popular franchise too, it can do well too

              • EX+

Oh, I’m not saying SE should cancel the XBO versions. I’m saying that the sales are gonna do more than pale in comparison.

                • DesmaX

But it should still be profitable, no?

PS4 and Xone have similar hardware, so porting it should be fairly easy. I see no problem with it

                  • EX+

MAYBE. I assume your getting the XBO or both consoles?

                    • DesmaX

I’ll stick with the PS4 because of the exclusives.

              • Budgiecat

Square-Enix is a joke now. The only thing they have left that can help their company from within is FF XV, KH III, and the sustainable income from FF XIV ARR subscriptions. Good thing they have Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Just Cause, Sleeping Dogs and Hitman to potentially help. Along with localizing CoD & Batman games in Japan (minor).

All their other efforts are moving to cell phone games and they’ve all but given up on localizing Dragon Quest. I doubt Drakengard 3 will make much of a dent let’s be honest.

They are in desperation mode and need to make that money back that they poured into ARR and all the long time investments of developing XV.

The XIII series has been doing worse each iteration . Most people are sick of it and just want the series to move on.
The fact that they’re so shameless with the Barbie dressup stuff is telling of their desperation…

            • Wolf Star

I agree :) anyone thinks that Xbox One will gets JRPG’s same as Ps4… Think again.. it will not sell very well on Xbox or Xbox One. People who likes Xbox, likes FPS shooters and couple of games are multiplats. Few people tried putting JRPG on Xbox 360 and look what happened.. I guess nobody likes cartoony graphics.

              • Budgiecat

I don’t know why he or Mistwalker, S-E or any of the other JRPG developers back in 2005/2006 though that was a good idea in the first place. First off, the original XBOX had HOW many successful JRPG’s?

                *crickets*

                Yeah I thought so.

And not to mention the obvious fact that the PS1 & PS2 was JRPG haven, XBOX was dead in Japan, and PS2 was still going strong at that time anyway. Why the hell would any Japanese developer even dream they had a successful chance?

Now Swery is making D4 for XBox 1 (good God why); maybe because he fell in love with Kinect who knows, but if he thinks his game will even sell, he’s delusional…

                • Pekola

Because Money. Microsoft pumped tons of moolah into their projects when Sony wouldn’t. Specially for Mistwalker, who aren’t a full studio. Microsoft gave them that push they needed.

Same as Nintendo with Last Story. And Monolith Soft and Xenoblade.

Unless Sony specifically goes to them, they probably won’t be releasing anything on it yet.

                  • Budgiecat

Sony didn’t feel they needed to; they had a big head from the success of the PS2 which was still rockin at the time in 2005. Maybe things will be different now who knows.

Sakaguchi needs to let go of his dumb old grudge with Sony though; Kutaragi is long gone and Mistwalker is making cell phone games now…well maybe they are hiding something in the works for Nintendo I dunno…

                    • Pekola

Yeah. I’m hoping they learned their lesson. And apparently they have. Rumors from the grapevine mention that they have a JRPG project to rival Final Fantasy in the works.

And I totally agree. Sakaguchi needs to put up and play to win or remain in obscurity. There’s no point in praising how good he is if he’s not willing to play on big boy territory.

                • Wolf Star

When I saw D4 trailer I tought it would be a good game but when I saw the gameplay… It turned around for me. I only have seen Kinect gameplay and no actual buttons. I guess it’s a Kinect only game. (They should’ve have said more about this game.. Now I don’t care anymore) it’s another Kinect game. Idk why either he wants to make a game for Xbox One’s Kinect game. It won’t sell that much. I’m already having fun with my Ps4 haha :) I really like it.

                  • Budgiecat

They did say you can play the game with a controller but empathized the ‘superiority’ of using the Kinect controls. Whatever…

                    • Wolf Star

They should’ve put a gameplay with a controller lol because that confused me and I tought it was a Kinect game.

                • Wolf Star

Plus I’m pretty sure we will see more JRPG games on Ps4 even more. Unless someone from Micrsoft bribes another Japanese developer because they are desperate.. :/ “Sigh” we know about FFXV but Kingdom Hearts 3?? That’s another story. To me it’s called Desperation. KH3 would’ve been PS4 exclusive until well Xbox one and yeah every already knows about that. I don’t want to go into detail. Well whatever we already know what’s going to happen this Friday :P Xbox One launches :) hehe

                  • Budgiecat

I don’t think Nomura and friends anticipated Microsoft botching up E3 as much as they did (despite M$ doing the 180). It was preemptive strike to assure max potential sales for KH III & FF XV to help pull S-E out of the mud.

                    • Wolf Star

Yeah, SE needed more money and M$ offered them a lot for FFXV and KH3.

                    • DarkLegacy

And then we all know what happened, they got greedy and decided to put FFXV and KH3 on Xbone

                    • Wolf Star

                      Yep

              • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, who really relates XBOX to JRPG anyway? It’s a Western developed console after all, lol. Sure, plenty of people talk about Phantasy Star Online, but a lot of them either forget, or simply don’t know, that it came out on Dreamcast way before XBOX, so that’s not an exclusive title.

Sony has always dealt with JRPGs ever since the PS1, so we can expect them to dominate that market again with PS4. The only thing that makes sense with the Tales series is keeping it between Sony and Nintendo because Tales of Phantasia started on SNES/Super Famicom, then they shifted to PS1 and Tales of Destiny was one of their best selling titles for the franchise.

Yes, XBOX 360 got Tales of Vesperia, but they ported it to PS3 later with more features, additional character, bug fixes, etc. so it was obvious they were simply giving 360 the ‘beta’ version. The same thing happened with Tales of Graces on Wii.

That game had a shitload of bugs, lol. Then they released it for PS3 under the title ‘Tales of Graces F’ with more content, an additional story, another playable character, bug fixes, etc. You see the same has also happened with Tales of Hearts R and Tales of Innocence R as well on Vita.

It’s very obvious they have a strong relationship with Sony and that Baba seems to just use Nintendo and Microsoft (well, not Microsoft any more) for testing purposes while giving Sony fans the true product because he realizes that’s where the fanbase for the franchise is. So yeah, we can expect exclusive Tales games for PS4 and Vita in the future (still waiting on that new Tales of the World game for Vita since we all know it’s coming… It’s just a matter of “when” :p).

                • Wolf Star

There isn’t that much Xbox One has to offer besides Music and Tv. I really wish that Tales of Vesperia Ps3 could come out of Japan, but it will never happen. (Plus everyone is mad and still begging for Vesperia Ps3) Tales studio already said no to that. (Yeah anyone who loves RPG’s and buys Xbox One instead.. good luck, you won’t find good JRPG games like on Ps4 anytime soon.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, most people in Japan seemed to be interested in 360 for iDOLM@STER and shmup titles from Cave since they weren’t porting to PS3. The only exclusive RPG I can even call ‘good’ for 360 was Lost Odyssey and that’s only cause Sakaguchi was behind it.

So yeah, it wouldn’t really surprise me if Japan simply said, “Nope” and didn’t even bother putting any RPG exclusives on XBOX ONE, honestly.

      • Wolf Star

I’m pretty sure we will see JRPG and more soon.

        • LordKaiser

Good RPGs not mediocre ones. Only a few RPGs on the PS3 have substance.

          • Budgiecat

Exactly. They need to step up their game.

          • Wolf Star

Yeah, agreed, we will see (I hope) good RPG :) soon enough >__<

            • DarkLegacy

FFXV and KH3 are good RPG games. But I hope that we do get some good RPG’s too

              • DesmaX

                There’s Project Phoenix too

                • DarkLegacy

Oh yeah, I shouldn’t have forgot about that

              • Wolf Star

Yeah still can’t wait for FFXV and KH3 :)

                • DarkLegacy

Me too. I’m desperate in fighting Leviathan

                  • Wolf Star

Same here dude, I want to climb that statue and do some badass things to the water dragon ^^

                    • DarkLegacy

Me too. I’d even do the same thing with Bahamut

                    • Wolf Star

This is first time I’ve seen monsters in the game (especially SE games) have emotions which I really like :) and dude!! Behemoth!! :D that’s going to be an epic fight!! :)

                    • DarkLegacy

Behemoth? I thought it was Bahamut lol

                    • Wolf Star

                      I meant bahemut lol xD

                    • DarkLegacy

I think you might have meant Behemoth from Kingdom Hearts because they might look similar

                    • Wolf Star

Yeah I think so?? Still can’t wait.

                    • DarkLegacy

                      Same here including KH3

      • Budgiecat

Japanese developers need to learn to take risks again in order for that to happen and quit focusing on garbage cell phone shovelware and lazy handheld games

        • Pekola

This is only speculation, but I think this gen we might be seeing a lot of mobile/console hybrids like Wonderflick.

          • Budgiecat

I really don’t want that to happen; those cell phone games only hinder the potential of the console versions.

Whats up with Legend 5 anyway? Other than NNK, wheres our Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy? Heck I’ll even take a WKC III if they can finally pull it off right like it shoulda been like the E3 2006 trailer and not a lame MMO wannabee. Everything they do now seems flavored for little kiddies, with cross promotion toy stuff. Need more mature RPGs

            • AdamBoy64

How I feel about the end product of WKC and how I think it turned out a lot better than the original E3 trailer is probably best left for a different topic –

But yeah, a WKC III would be brilliant. I’d be racing down for a PS4 if that happened.

              • Budgiecat

Obviously the end product of WKC was not that great since they revised some of it in WKC II when they added it in.
Dumbed dowwn faux MMO rudimentary mechanics over true physics sword & shield? Maybe in Bizarro world…

                • AdamBoy64

I guess I don’t know enough about MMO’s to know what MMO elements were in WKC –
I know there is online functionality (with quests and the like), but I’ve never tried it out.

The E3 trailer seemed to have a cutscene everytime you entered a battle. Like it was so cutscene oriented. They may as well have just made it into a movie.

Had they kept that, I’m not sure I would have enjoyed it enough to play through it. I think it turned out a lot better than the original E3 trailer.

                  With the online,

I know there was quite a lot of disappointment with it. And it sounded like us in the West got the rough end of it, something awful.

I don’t take much notice of online, mainly because online in any game is ‘here today, gone tomorrow’. When reading a review, I don’t take into account any online functionality.

Because chances are by the time I get to play the game, it will no longer be available. I guess PC gaming has the edge here.

Having true sword and shield physics sounds cool, sounds like it might be more of an action game than a JRPG though.

Hope that wasn’t too long a response. Thanks for the reply man.

    • miyamoto

      PS2 X 2 = PS4

  • EX+

PS2 all over again. Not to mention that Europe and Japan haven’t even gotten their hands on the thing yet. Damn, that shit’s gonna be crazy.

  • Tac-Mex

    Congratulations Sony.

I went to a big retail store here in México and there are not more PS4 pre-orders but still you can get an Xbox One launch edition.

  • ayb_91

Not buying it till FF XV or KH III get released. Congratulations to Sony though.

    • MasterSensei

I wonder if you can play newly released games on the PS4 through Gaikai? If I can do that then I wouldn’t mind buying a PS4 so that I can play Final Fantasy 10 or Kingdom Hearts 1.5 ( and the new Kingdom Hearts 2.5 coming out next year ) on the PS4 while I wait for Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3.

      • ayb_91

As I recall, Gaikai is not 100% smoothly operating. Why the rush buying ps4 to play FF X and KH 2.5? I suggest you play them on ps3 as I will do.

        • MasterSensei

I wanted to get a PS4 before the release of Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 so that I can have one around so that when the games are released I can play then day 1. But you’re right I should just play those games on the PS3 while I wait for the games to come out

  • Magnumsally

That doesnt mean too much with such a bad launch library and launch issues. We will see if that keeps up after launch, my assumption is no

    • Luna Kazemaru

launch issues on a new console? You don’t say lol.

      • https://www.teepublic.com/user/ECM ECM

Uh, no, more like unprecedented launch issues. There is, quite literally, nothing like this on any preceding console–it’s not even close and is in a league of its own.

        • Luna Kazemaru

I like how you ignored the whole RRoD launch issue aswell as the YLoD and wii u’s bricking again. Keep trying to blow it out of proportion tho.

          • AdamBoy64

            Lolz. What a great response.
I’m sure he will keep trying.

The failure rate seems quite low, but I do hope for those affected they can get replacements pretty quick.

            • Luna Kazemaru

Yeah I’m hopping people can get replacements aswell as some how get a hot fix to this issue later on

        • Elvick

          Unprecedented?

          No.

    • Comandante Bushido

      Its not that bad

  • Luna Kazemaru

congratz to sony lets just see if the games can keep coming like they said.

  • https://www.teepublic.com/user/ECM ECM

And the gaming media continues to ignore the fact that not only did a very large number of us get DOA machines (clearly far beyond an accepted 3% and a universe beyond Sony’s laughable 0.4% “isolated” incidents), some of us–like me!–managed to get 2 broken machines in a row, that a full third of Amazon reviews are one-star (unprecedented, btw), and Sony’s support site is covered in problems that Sony admits to (hard drive seating issues; disc ejection problems) and ones they don’t (machines DOA, broken HDMI, massive overheating, etc.)

(Sony’s support lines are so jammed that the wait time went from an hour on Friday afternoon to 3+ hours today just so people can RMA their machines and be told they might not see a new for several weeks, all while Sony attempts to sell them an extended warranty for their DOA console. Pure class.)

(Oh, and great job on PSN being mostly down all weekend long–well done, Sony, clearly Nintendo isn’t the only company completely incompetent with online.)

And yeah, go ahead fanboys, while you revel in the sales #s, be sure to down-vote and dismiss these problems as outliers even though there’s never been anything like this at a console launch, ever. (Not that you’d know it since the gaming media, ever too timid to bite the hand that feeds it, has nothing to say about the topic.) The only analog is the RROD fiasco, but those machines took months to go south and weren’t arriving DOA or dying shortly thereafter.

EDIT: and yeah, no, I don’t care for MS at all and have no interest in an XB1, so put away your fanboy caps for 20 minutes and look into the details before trying to spin this away.

    • Tac-Mex

I am sorry to hear that bro :(

I hope my PS4 doesn’t have any problems when i got delivered.

    • Luna Kazemaru

So anyone who is happy about the sales is a fanboy? I know not to take you serious at all. No one is going to take you serious if you automatically going to start flinging shit but ok.

Edit: for the record yes PSN as been overloaded but it hasn’t been down all week seeing as how a number of streamers and my friends have been online.

      • Budgiecat

More like people can be happy but at the same time, learn to empathize with the people with broken ones because that aint cool.

Especially if that Foxconn rumor is true…

        • Luna Kazemaru

I can empathize just fine but if you going to try and play the fanboy card so fast lol no

          • Budgiecat

Who’s playing the fanboy card? I’m talking about the justification of being upset over having two broken consoles in a row. You wouldn’t be sitting there saying hooray for sales when you can’t even get your brand new console to work. Twice.

            • Luna Kazemaru

What i am saying don’t come out right form the start calling someone with a fanboy just because they are happy or ignoring( which no one was) about the issues of something its just saying i don’t want to be civil at all.

    • http://kazriko2.tumblr.com Kazriko Redclaw

0.4% is still 4000, and 4000 people can make a whole lot of noise and sound like they’re a lot more prevalent than they actually are. 4000 people are enough to jam up the support lines for any company.

The PSN was mostly up for me, it blipped offline randomly, but it was up enough for me to download every indie and free to play game available for the system on the first day with no issues. I just had to retry logging in 2-3 times before it took the first time, and once it did it was registered and just automatically reconnected and continued all of the downloads seamlessly.

No overheating here either, the system runs way cooler than my launch PS3. Only puts out about double the heat of my 80 watt slim PS3.

      • Pekola

Prevalent? He’s just complaining because his system borked up not once, but twice.

I’d be pretty annoyed too. Specially since those who do have their PS4’s are all cozy and happy—ready to dismiss it.

4000 is a small number. But they are still people who paid and reserved the thing, ect. They’re not just a percentage.

Honestly, I’m glad Playstation is slaying, but this whole “well lol stop complaining about bad stuff happening to you” is a bit ‘eh’—specially coming from people who’re probably playing their PS4’s with no problems whatsoever.

        • http://kazriko2.tumblr.com Kazriko Redclaw

I’m certainly not telling him to stop complaining, just making the point that the official percentage numbers don’t necessarily need to be wrong for it to still have a large amount of negative buzz.

    • Jared Carter

Smh. I can understand why you’re upset, but the incidents are isolated to only 0.4%. That’s about 4000 people. I haven’t had single problem and PSN hasn’t shown any problems since I got mine at midnight. This is nothing like the RROD fiasco and isn’t bad. Stop exaggerating facts to suit your hate.

    • Charlie

Pessimistic people are annoying to say the least. This is a massive achievement. Stop trying to turn it into something negative because you’re just making yourself look like a raging fanboy.

      • Budgiecat

Hey two broken machines in a row and you’d be kinda pissed too don’t pretend

        • Charlie

Of course I’d be pissed but that doesn’t mean I’m going to whine and bitch about every last aspect of the PS4 on the internet.

    • Elvick

Every console has failures. Every object manufactured in a factory has failures… even things made by hand have defects. Food can be cooked improperly. Nothing is free from the potential of ‘failure’.

Welcome to the real world, where magical fairies don’t create everything that we consume.

No one is denying there are some failures in the hardware, but it’s clear that people are striving to make this a huge epidemic, when it’s not. Oh, people UNHAPPY making it known? Yeah, THAT never happens… oh wait, people are MORE LIKELY to give their feedback if it’s negative. While most people who are happy won’t ever say anything about it.

Skewing perception in the negative light because a vocal minority.

The rest of your post is so salty I won’t even bother to touch it.

    • http://kazriko2.tumblr.com Kazriko Redclaw

BTW, to amend my prior comments, statistically speaking if the failure rate is 0.4%, then there should be roughly 16 people in NA that had the exact same problem as you and received, or will receive two failed consoles in a row.

    • LordKaiser

      Foxconn is at fault

  • PrinceHeir

    congrats Sony ^^

  • Zackasaur

    1. Highest pre-order numbers in gaming hardware history.

    2. Biggest gaming hardware launch in NA history.

    3. Lowest failure rate in gaming hardware launch history.

    4. Most vocal minority in gaming hardware launch history. Ah, the curse of the world of Amazon, Twitter, and Reddit. lol

    • Budgiecat

Its too early to close the book on the failure rate yett

  • True Gamer

STILL CANT FIND ME A PS4 COPY!!!

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

      That’s what pre-orders are for

      • True Gamer

That really goes without saying…I know what they are for but not everyone had the opportunity to do so unfortunately.

    • AdamBoy64

Yes, if you didn’t preorder, you might be in for a tough time finding one.
Over here, I don’t think they’ll be available again until early January now.

      • True Gamer

Yea man I have been going through hardships. For instance, at BJ’s a guy purchased 5 PS4 copies as a “walk in and grab customer” literally 5 minutes before I arrived. I understand that, not having a pre-ordered copy is not a logical way to go about a hot item but shit like that makes me mad, especially when they said they had more than enough copies. Oh well. More shipments are arriving throughout the week in stores around my area and I am in total beast mode.

        • AdamBoy64

          What… wow, that’s crazy.
You think it’d be the sort of thing they’d limit to 1 per customer.
Sorry to hear that. Hope you’re able to find one soon.

          • True Gamer

Thanks bro. Yea it is crazy, I have never seen anything like it. The lady I talked to was the one who sold them. I told her that not only did she do something that was completely selfish, she ruined an opportunity for others, like me, who was willing to buy a membership there (which means I will be coming back as a regular, thus throwing my money towards them) and a PS4. Well at least I have BF4, and Killzone safe and sound in my home lol

            • AdamBoy64

What sucks too is, that guy who bought 5 PS4’s is probably just looking to make some money.

Probably put like 4 on eBay for a ridiculous price, and make a neat profit.
              Man, that’s so annoying.
Hope you find a PS4 soon man.

              • True Gamer

Thanks. Two copies are on Amazon for 1,1400…..

                • AdamBoy64

                  Um, what? 11 grand?

                  Hoping that’s a typo.
                  $1.4k is crazy enough.

                  • True Gamer

                    lol my fault. l,400

                    • AdamBoy64

Man. That’s still like 350% markup.

                    • shogunknight

It will die down, it will take a while but…..it will die down. Like it or not, we may actually have to wait till next year before the rush is settled down

                    • True Gamer

I Will Never Give Up lol. But yea that may be the worst scenario for me

                    • AdamBoy64

                      Yes, that’s a good point.

The crazy eBay and Amazon sellers will have their run of profits, but the days are numbered, until new shipments are available and the PS4 becomes widely available.

                    • True Gamer

Yea bro I saw it up there earlier. I guess because it is a hot item they think that people will be desperate enough to buy a ps4 at that price. Crazy indeed

  • shogunknight

They still have Europe, Asia and Japan, South America left. Damn…it may be actually possible for it to outsell wiiU current worldwide sales. 24 hours, wow

  • Charlie

    Good on ya Sony!

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

    PS4 is the New PS2.
I knew in my heart that PS4 is gonna be a system seller. One thing PS2 & PS4 have in common is the compared to their competition PS2 & PS4 are mide price ranged consoles.
Gamecube sold at launch for $199 and we all know the Original Xbox sold at launch for about the same price as the upcoming Xbox One.
Regardless though its more than the price, its the GAMES that drive a systems sales like how Dark Cloud,FFX, and Kingdom Hearts were just a few examples of system sellers.

    • miyamoto

      PS2 x 2= PS4 FTW!

      • LordKaiser

        They missed your point XD

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

The only reason im unaffected is cause i dont yet have a PS4. I will get one this March once the inFAMOUS Second Son bundle comes out.

Regardless though Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen kicks Ass. Thank you PS+

  • Bobby Jennings

This is really good. Grats Sony!

  • AdamBoy64

    Congratulations Sony.
    Really well done.

  • Pekola

He’s hath risen to retake the throne has its rightful heir.

    Playstation 4 is slaying.

    • DarkLegacy

I totally like that comment. I give you an upvote

      • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Agreed and i’d like to add that i predict PS4 selling 3 – 4 million console before the years end. And by the end of February in Japan over 2 million PS4’s will be sold out in Japan by March 2014 next year.

        • Lelouch Vi Britannia

          I meant 3 – 4 million more.

  • Aiddon

o…kay? I seriously fail to see what this means other than Sony sold a million consoles. whoop-dee-doo, great first day, now let’s see how long you can sustain it.

    • Pekola

It means that the console has broken expectations. No other console has sold this much in their opening days, much less 24 hours.

And that’s just North America. It broke a record.

      • Aiddon

until that record is then broken down the line. It’s not exactly a high bar to clear.

        • Elvick

          Wat…

Given that it hadn’t been broken until the 8th generation, I’d say it is most definitely a high bar for this industry.

          • Aiddon

and movies once didn’t do $100 million opening weekends. Now that happens left and right. Not exactly all that big when you sit down and think for a second.

            • Elvick

Different industries. You’re comparing apples to oranges.

              • Aiddon

I love how people try to pull that argument whenever they realize they’ve been backed into a corner. If I had been comparing them favorably you wouldn’t be disagreeing with me

                • Sevyne

Who was backed into a corner? All I’ve seen is you making a bumbling fool out of yourself.

                  • shogunknight

Come now, lets not get this derailed or out of hand

                    • Sevyne

Woah woah…after all of the shit exchanged here, I’m the one that’s flying off the rail? Yeah..okay. I’ve sat idle and watched all of this play out and it’s quite honestly disgusting to read at this point.

                    • shogunknight

I just thought the insult wasnt necessary. No offense

                    • Sevyne

Well I am offended. This entire conversation wasn’t necessary and he IS acting like a bumbling fool. Just calling it like i see it. Know who derailed things? You did.

                  • Aiddon

and you empty a clip into your foot right out of the gate by engaging in ad hominem.

                    • Sevyne

I don’t think that means what you think it means, but okay then.

I wasn’t wrong. You totally dismissed the “apples and oranges” thing as being “backed into a corner” when Elvick wasn’t wrong at all. You compared sub $10 movie ticket sales the units sold of a $400 console. That’s as ridiculous as people claiming that mobile gaming is king because milions of people buy $1 smartphone games. You were being a bumbling fool.

Anyway, I’ve said my piece and that’s that.

                • Elvick

If you honestly think that, then okay…

I’m done discussing it with you.

            • shogunknight

@disqus_4qxZDhDO9o:disqus, electronic and gaming press have every right to be impressed as this was the 1st time it was done in console gaming. Same as the milestone GTAV made. It doesnt have to be a big deal, neither should it be ignored since it has never happened. You dont have to be impressed, the knowledge of this is all that matters.

              • Pekola

                I think you mean @Aiddon?

But this is a first for a console so it definitely is news-worthy. Specially since a lot of people have been under the impression that console gaming would take a hit.

                • shogunknight

Oh, yes i replied to @Aiddon:disqus. My 1st sentence was supporting both @disqus_4qxZDhDO9o:disqus, Electronic and gaming press

            • GhostNomad

Now that happens left and right.

              Yeah, no.

To give you the benefit of the doubt, I did a bit of research. There have been ten movies in the year of 2013 so far that have stood out and made it over $50,000,000 on an opening weekend (a few on that list were just barely over but they still count). If you wanna talk your numbers of $100,000,000 being something that happens left and right, Iron Man 3 with an impressive $174,144,585 and Man of Steel with $116,619,362. Hardly as frequent as you’re trying to make it out to be.

Sure, the PS4’s launch record might be broken down the line, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy of recognition at the time when it happened (AKA now, the present).

              • Aiddon

I dislike thinking solely in the present; I like to keep my eyes forward instead of believing in nothing but instant gratification.

                • GhostNomad

So basically never allow yourself to be excited over anything because “it can always be better”. Sounds like you really hate your life.

For the record, I never said “live solely in the present”, but to enjoy it.

        • LordKaiser

Stop crying! Your argument was defeated before it even started.

    • Kobracon

There is no other meaning than “They have sold a million consoles”. Its just news, take it how you will. Its like a newspaper article saying “Thousands have died in a tsunami”, there is no deeper meaning other than letting you know. Ppl die, other disasters will happen in the future, its just FYI

      • Aiddon

        well…that was pretty freaking tasteless

        • Kobracon

So is making jokes about 9-11, doesn’t stop people from doing it.

One of the biggest launches that was successful last time was the PS2 launch. I know I don’t Need to explain the PS3 launch and the clusterfuck of a mess it was. Great Job SONY keep it up. While you’re at it could yeah make a sequel or Remake to “Legend of Dragoon” that’d be the shiz.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Speaking of SONY titles how would a Dark Cloud 3 or Rogue Galaxy 2 sound to anyone.

    • Lelouch Vi Britannia

      i’d love both though.

      • ayb_91

See ? That’s why Sony wants to lose so much $$$ and then they cry out loud. I can’t believe why they can’t think like us although they are developers and we are mere fans. Wake up Sony -_-

        • McPoo

I doubt Rogue Galaxy 2 would be a big money maker.

          • ayb_91

Better than Knack at least which got really low review scores.

            • McPoo

That’s true. I imagine they thought they were hitting as broad a market as possible. Both Knack and RG2 hit the nostalgia button that Sony are pushing, Knack has the added benefit of being suitable for all ages, which makes it stand out a bit in a launch full of more adult themed games.

Besides, there’s every possibility that a Rogue Galaxy sequel could get low reviews too.

    • shogunknight

      Valkyrie Profile!!

      • ayb_91

        OMG ! Want !!

    • ayb_91

Sounds great ! But will Sony accept it? No they won’t. I hope they will though.

  • Elvick

Hunger for next gen has never been more prevalent for new console sales than it is now. This generation has dragged on a long time. And while I love that, it’s also nice to finally have some new hardware.

I’m glad the PS4 is starting out strong. It’s a great console.

    • Lelouch Vi Britannia

This Generation in my Opinion doesn’t compare to Generations 3 – 6 of gaming which were Infintely better.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

My only hope is the next Gen. isn’t another FPS Oversaturated Market again.I like to play Shooters but at the same time there is only so much of them i can deal with.

      • Lelouch Vi Britannia

This easily also attributes to Sony fixing their F-up which we all remember 7 years ago was the PS3 launch. Sigh. Regardless though i’m happy Sony has turned things around bigtime.

        • MogCakes

It’s a good thing that the PS3 launch was such a disaster, because Sony was at the pinnacle of their hubris back then and needed the reality check.

          • $18114340

It’s more than a little strange that this generation seems to have reversed Microsoft and Sony’s roles, respectively — although I’m definitely not a fan of the whole sympathetic Sony angle. I’m wary of Sony more than any other company because public opinion appears to be so much in their favor that there’s no possible way to even criticize them. It could eventually lead back to a PS3 situation, although at that point the circumstances surrounding Microsoft could be very different. Hell, at that point we might not even have a traditional view of console gaming anymore.

  • McPoo

Impressive stuff, wonder how long until it overtakes the Wii U…

I had no interest in the console until a week or so ago, then I was tempted for a bit, and now it’s passed again. I don’t really find either next gen console all that interesting yet, and although I’m usually an early adopter I will be waiting 6 months – a year to see which has the library I prefer, and which console I like the look of more.

Right now I’m swinging slightly more Xbone, but that could very easily change.

    • Budgiecat

Global Wii U hardware sales to date sit at 3.91 million units as of the end of last month.

Nintendo has maintained its 9 million Wii U sales forecast for the fiscal year through March 2014, despite only having sold 460,000 consoles since April.

The price cut at the end of September however, gave them a 100 to 200% jump in sales for the first 15 days.

Nintendo said it will concentrate on “proactively releasing key first-party titles towards the coming year,” such as Super Mario 3D World and Wii Party U, in order to regain momentum for the platform.

The firm also pointed to acceleration of digital distribution of Wii U and 3DS software as a method of increasing profitability.

So not too long……but needs more gaems

      • McPoo

Agreed, mines not been used since April.

        • Budgiecat

I meant the PS4. But the Wii U needs more gaems too but that should go without saying..

          • McPoo

            Oh yeah, my mistake >.>

So basically, more games for everybody?

      • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Hope Nintendo learns their lesson and ships more than enough copies of “XenoBlade 2″. Cause getting a copy of “Xenoblade Chronicles” is a bitch and a half when it comes to price. Heck I got Xenogears Black label, and the entire XenoSaga Trilogy for less than $70 which Gamestop is still charging, sigh.

I don’t mean to cuss but it is true about Xenoblade.

  • LordKaiser
