Improves stability and minor user interface refinements.

PlayStation 4 system software update 1.51 will be available for download later today, Sony has announced.

The required update will improve the stability of system software, and include minor refinements to elements of the system’s user interface (such as clearly indicating when a user downloads a game and a game patch at the same time).

If your system is in stand-by mode, your PlayStation 4 will automatically download the update when it becomes available later tonight.

I’ve heard rumors somewhere that games like COD:G and BF4 are currently having some minor performance issues because of the current firmware, so maybe this will fix that?

    • NeoTechni

Ea already retracted that claim. Its the devs faults, not the firmware

    • Bobby Jennings

Well with Activision they’re supposed to be releasing a update for the game that stops the FPS from just dropping at random times.

I want a picture/video/music sections dangit!I hate having all my things in my “library” i dont want them mixed

    • Nhiroz

I dont like the idea of a “library” I prefer my files in the right folders and such, I’m a bit anal with the that sort of stuff ;-)

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Exactly,i have everything put into files on my comp, i dont want pics with videos!!!!or games with apps

Having the system in standby mode and automatically downloading new updates overnight sounds a bit scary.

There were a few updates last gen that flat-out bricked consoles.
Always nice to wait a couple of days, if you can.

    • Nhiroz

I just posted asking the same thing a second after you :-D

      • AdamBoy64

        Ah yes, lolz.
Well, if worse comes to worst, and there’s no option to disable automatic updates in Standby mode we might just have to disable standby mode altogether.

        • Nhiroz

Is that possible? I know with the next gen consols, they have this need to have everything on standby mode….

          • AdamBoy64

Yes, I’ve read online that you can disable standby mode.

If you individually disable all the functions of standby mode, then standby mode itself will be disabled, and the system will just turn off instead.

This is good, otherwise I’d be turning it off at the wall each time.

I just thank the gods that none of those updates ever broke my ps3. It may have been because I had a original 80Gb PS3.

    • Elvick

And there were tons of “bricked” consoles because of “updates” and “games” because the console happened to break naturally after someone played y game and updated to x firmware.

And the most recent “wide spread” “bricked” console update, was fixed with another patch you’d manually put on the PS3. So it wasn’t “bricked” at all. You can’t fix a bricked console with another update.

But people are dumb and want something to blame. There’s really no way to know fully how many consoles were legitimately bricked via an update thanks to idiots.

People are not dump. By the way, are you somehow a queen or something? You seem so kind and think in a good way. Yeah that was a sarcasm.

Didn’t you see how people bricked their ps 3 slim ( 500 gb ) a while ago!? Either your iq is way too low or you are simply a retard.

And who would take the risk of downloading a software update that could brick the console? Even if the solution is there somewhere, it is frustrating !! I won’t buy a console just to be frustrated but you seem to like it that way. Good luck queen of swamp.

        You have earned a trophy!

Or thanks to Sony putting out faulty firmware. One of the two.

I can only think of one incident that I witnessed. It was a family member with an original PS3. I can’t remember the update number, it was one of the version 3.xx upgrades. (a few years ago now)

After the update, it basically just red screened. Dead as a doorstop. Couldn’t do anything under any modes – nothing.

He called Sony and told them it was bricked after an update, and got a woeful response from them. Their response was, “Well, we’ve got 3 consoles here running the new firmware just fine.”.

Wow. Just wow. They were as helpful as a bag of rocks. Thankfully it was still under the initial 1 year warranty, so he was able to just get the whole system replaced.

I had this grand view of Sony in my head and suddenly this happens. I’m sure it all happens with all companies – but Sony certainly aren’t exempt from that.

Sony are responsible for the updates they put out. And they have to take responsibility for their own mistakes.

If their firmware breaks a console because someone played a certain game – or used the system in a particular way – that’s also Sony’s fault.

So yeah, next gen. Definitely jumping on the waiting wagon for any update.

        • Nhiroz

          Well said sir:-)

  • Nhiroz

What if the update bricks your PS4 like some of the PS3 firmware did? Is it possible to make it so it doesn’t download in standby mode? Asking because I dont have one “YET!””:-)

    • 武神水樹

I don’t think it’ll brick, there weren’t any major firmware issues for the PS3 till at least 5 years after it launched

      • ayb_91

Still, it is a possibility which I really wouldn’t risk to have it. Would you?

        • Nhiroz

I dont blame you, seeing how expensive the system was, its a risk I wouldn’t want to take.

          • bloodiOS

Risk it, it’s under 1 year warranty after all ;P

            • Nhiroz

With my luck it would brick the day after the warranty expires…. :'(

              • ayb_91

My luck is exactly like yours. Cheer up pal :p

    • ayb_91

Omg ! Sony fix this asap !!

  • Elvick

“(such as clearly indicating when a user downloads a game and a game patch at the same time).”

    Thank god. That was weird.

  • shogunknight

Oh a stability update, may fix some PSN issues. Looking at the comments, it seems like theres no option to ‘ask’ when an update is available. Maybe this should also be noted to them, its better safe than sorry. Not sure if its already there but I think they should also include folders (i noticed when you have lots of games, it makes a long line, could be weird at times) to arrange your apps and games

    • GhostNomad

I feel like the ‘recently used’ bar should be limited to a small number of games/apps and the rest should be categorized properly just like the PS3’s XMB.
