12.7 million units sold since 2006 launch.

Nintendo will soon end production of the original Wii in Japan.

A notice on the console’s Japanese website confirms the news. It reads “production will soon end.”

Wii has sold 12.7 million units in Japan since its 2006 launch, according to Game Data Museum, and over 100 million units worldwide.

Thanks, Game Jouhou.

Seems kinda early for a console so hyped. Sony’s PS2 production lasted 13 years

Yeah, have to agree – it seems early.
The Wii must have gone downhill pretty quick, in terms of sales.

Definitely didn’t end up being as successful as the PS2, but still, it was and is a great console.

I agree with everything except the great console part.

          That’s a shame.

Well, hopefully you were able to give it a proper chance – if not, well, your loss.

Probably to focus on manufacturing more WiiUs. Was a good console, wii sports brought new types of gamers to the industry

I think they just aren’t selling enough Wiis to justify manufacturing more.

They’re definitely not under-producing Wii Us right now. They’re having a bit of a hard time selling those, too.

      But things can change~

Not only that, but possibly to avoid brand confusion. If they stop manufacturing Wiis in the west, people might stop confusing the Wii U with it and asking what’s so different about it.

Sony is the only one who can keep a console going into the next generation. The PS3 will surpass the Wii as I always said it would. The Wii was a mediocre console. There was nothing great about it.Also playsports on PS2 was the original Wii sports so the EyeToy should be given credit for bringing new types of gamers to the industry …but those gamers were casual.

“The Wii was a mediocre console. There was nothing great about it”

      open your mind dude

    • AdamBoy64

No, I don’t expect the PS3 to sell another 20 million after the PS4 is out.

Also, the PS2 and the eyetoy had nowhere near the impact on the market you think they had – nothing compared to the Wii.
