Garrett steals the Heart of the Lion.

Square Enix has released the debut gameplay trailer for Thief.

The video shows Garrett the master thief’s hideout, the city’s dark alleys, and Garrett’s old friend and fence Basso. Thief‘ score gameplay pillars–infiltration, theft, and escape–are highlighted as Garrett enters Baron Northcrest’s manor to steal the Heart of the Lion.

Not sure about it based on that trailer. Looks like the stealth and traps/puzzles might be way too easy.

Yeah. They gave Garrett supernatural powers to make a stealth game easier for the COD fanboys who have no patience and just like to shoot shit in the face.

    Thief series ruined confirmed.

    Fuck you, Eidos.

I’ll pick it up on Steam when it’s like $10.

EDIT: I guess I misspoke. Even one of IGN’s resident COD fanboy Xbots has problems with the new Thief. lol

      Blame Dishonored and AssCreed.

      • DarthBrian

I blame the misinterpretation of what DIshonored was maybe. Wasn’t meant to be a Thief clone. It was inspired more by Deus Ex than Thief.
Also, at least Dishonored allows you to turn off all the stuff that makes it easy and offers you a challenge in the form of beating the game without buying any supernatural powers or upgrades except Blink. Which I did, by the way, on Very Hard mode, which wasn’t very hard. Time consuming yes, hard no. Still a good game, I enjoyed it.

Alright, I can concede to that. To be perfectly fair Dishonored really has no association with this Thief anyway — if the rumors of its troubled development are true, the game would have suffered for it whether it was being perceived as aping other popular properties or not.

I have never played a Thief game before, but after watching the trailer above, all I could think was “Dishonored” with a pinch of “mirror’s Edge”

Are all the previous Thief games 1st person? I didn’t think they were…

            • $18114340

Yes, they were. The Thief series is known (along with Metal Gear Solid) for pioneering 3D stealth-action, and the main draw was that they were in first-person rather than in third-person, which would go on to influence games such as System Shock 2 and Deus Ex (the original, the best). But where MGS had an emphasis on cinematic flair, Thief was more atmospherically subtle, which is why some old-school Thief fans may consider what’s shown in this trailer as an affront.

The thing is, the older Thief games (specifically the second) were rather slowly-paced, modest affairs. They weren’t like Dishonored or Mirror’s Edge; they were more like the first three Splinter Cell games minus all the shooting and with a more open-ended approach to level design. Player goals were presented in a less linear fashion with a much greater emphasis on zero-detection, backtracking, and exploration. Thief was a REAL stealth game, through and through.

They’re a bit dated, but the first two Thief games are still pioneers in the genre and worth playing — if you so desire, they’re readily available on if I recall correctly (along with the third, which had third-person as an option and wasn’t a terrible game, but wasn’t standout like The Metal Age either).

How come you guys don’t support Google+? It’s bigger than Twitter for god sake.

    • CosmicNova

I DO,I wouldn’t go near twitter with a ten foot pole, even if you pay me to.

        I mean, Gematsu.

Day one. First SQEX PS4 game. I’ll be all over it.

  • captainhowdy

After they got rid of the horror theme, I just don’t care about this anymore. I loved Thief since the first, because of the supernatural themes added with steampunk (which made it unique).

    Ah well.

Ever since I heard that there was a huge exodus on the original dev team due to internal ex-Ubisoft employee favoritism, which led to a ton of lost dev time and significant deviance from the original vision of the remake, I completely lost interest. Even if it’s not actually the case, this still looks to me like someone’s pet project with an established name slapped on it rather than a faithful and respectful reimagining of the source material.

Seriously, this sounded so fucking shady when I first read it and completely turned me off from the game out of principle:

      • captainhowdy

Man, poor Eidos. It’s sad because so many great devs worked on Thief, and it was one of my favorite series. To read that is really making me dislike this game even more.

All I can say is this game is missing the soul of the original Thief games. I wouldn’t touch this with a ten foot poll. I hope those devs find a nice home.

You know what? it ant too shabby…i might get it…..after 2 years that is….LAWL…

  • Tamara

i honestly like it, call it whatever you want to call it, but it’s actually turning out to be really good and i can’t wait to get my hands on it :)
