Eternal college students go from Tekken to Shadow Fall.

Sony’s latest PlayStation 4 promotion video is a bit nostalgic. Dubbed “4 The Players Since 1995,” it chronicles each era of PlayStation through the eyes of college students who appear to never be leaving.

Watch as they go from Tekken on PSone to Resident Evil 4 on PS2 to Gran Turismo 5 on PS3 to Killzone: Shadow Fall on PlayStation 4 below.

Thanks, PlayStation Blog Europe.

That was great. It surprises me that Sony doesn’t utilize the long legacy of PlayStation to insight nostalgia and memories to push their new systems and content more often.

Rekindle that love and rebuild the brand that used to be the leader and was a large part of pushing the industry into the mainstream and future with PSone and PS2 domination.

I noticed the PS Vita in there (when two are playing GT5), so I assume the PSP was in there somewhere, but I missed it. Unless that was the PSP and I missed the Vita.

    • Alkhan

The guy was playing a PSP during the GT5 part. I think I saw a Vita on the floor next to the Knack and Killzone ShadowFall boxes at the end though.

      • Elvick

I see it now, thanks for the head up.

Sure Sony, show no one playing the Vita! :P

      I know that feel bro…

I love Sony’s marketing normally. The one where all the different characters are hanging out in the bar, the All Stars ads, and all that jazz – I think they’re all really clever and really nice to watch.

This one, although a cool concept, I think misses the mark a little bit. I’m not so keen on the choice of music, and the way the start up sounds play over it. The content is also at odds with the style a bit – it’s a flashy, well made video, very trendy, while at the same time showing the main guy as being a perpetual manchild, still living with his parents.

I’m probably giving it too much thought, and I’m sure the majority of their audience won’t have those complaints, I just don’t think it’s as great as some of their previous ones.

EDIT: Also, I loved hearing the Aku Aku (or Uka Uka?) mask from Crash Bandicoot again :p

  • badmoogle

That was a really good ad,it brought back some very special memories. It seems as if 2006 and 2013 Sony are completely different companies in terms of marketing…They seem do be doing all the right things lately.

  • Gigus

    Sooo much nostalgia.

  • rainelee

Heh. I almost shed a tear. Great video, Sony.

  • CeroSuerte

Nice!! What is that 16-18 years??
Keep it coming, we still want more

  • Charlie

Ah, nostalgia. So happy to still have my old consoles and games.

    • badmoogle

Same here!I still play on my PS2.

      • Charlie

Me too! In fact, I was just playing Kensei Sacred Fist on my PS3.

        • Budgiecat

Complete with fake Steven Seagal (pre fat belly gut type)

          • Charlie

My brother and I make comparisons to the two all the time. Even his hand movements and fighting style are reminiscent of Steven Seagal.

  • EspadaKiller

So so much nostalgia. Happy to see Sony throwing up these kinds of ads. They are on a roll! PS4 bring it on !

  • True Gamer

PS4 will bring back all of those great memories I had for the ps1 and ps2. It just feels like they are doing everything right, like they have always done for gamers

    • Learii

      I agree

    • Wolf Star

To me PS4 will be the next PS2, so far from February 2013- (close to Launch) November 2013 I see Sony is going back to PS2 glory days and I’m so happy. The games so far looks amazing.

      • True Gamer

I definitely agree. I am just too hyped for the ps4 launch date, and overwhelmingly inpatient for the upcoming titles. I have not felt this hyped for a gaming console for a long time.

        • Wolf Star

I can’t wait also!! :D and I never preordered a console before and PS4 is my first time preordering a console. Same here I’m hyped for it and can’t wait for amazing games to comes out and FF XV and KH3.

          • True Gamer

I suffer from only one problem. I took off my pre order for the ps4 in hopes that I can get the killzone bundle due to a suggestion from my friend. However, when I went to the site he said it was on, it was all sold out lol. So it will be a journey getting the system on launch day. As such, FFXV and KH3 will be beast

            • Wolf Star

Why you cancelled PS4 preorder?? Everyone knew that PS4 got sold out. Well it’s going to be a long journey for you to get one. I hope you find one at launch :)

              • True Gamer

Yea it was a foolish move on my part, but no matter what I will have that system, and thanks

                • Wolf Star

Yeah :) and your welcome ^^ the system will be amazing :)

            • AdamBoy64

Well, if it turns out you can’t get it on or around launch day – at least then when you did find it – there’d be a lot more content, and a lot more games available.

              • True Gamer

No doubt, but I will have a the system if not by launch, the next day most definitely. However, I know that launch day will be crazy. I’m excited!!

  • kurosan9712

If only it had games…not multiplatforms, not FPS, but GAMES…

    • McPoo

      Those are games mate.

    • Sal Romano

Seems you’re looking for something that’s not games.

    • Charlie

Yeah, I don’t think you know what you’re talking about.

  • hush404

    This is awesome.

  • BossTuff

I love how it shows the different iterations of each console too. The playstation and then then PSone. Then playstation 2 huge to slim. Nice done for the nostalgia feels that’s for sure. Though I wish they were showing twisted metal instead of tekken. :(

    • Budgiecat

Is it supposed to be the same kid in his house throughout the whole video? That would mean by the end he’s like 33 years old still living at home because he looks like 15 in 1995….

  • Invisbin

    : ‘)

  • SolarisSpell

    Really nice ad.

Right this morning I was having an argument with myself trying to decide the best console ever. My own final was SNES vs PS2.
I finally decided for PS2… Xenosaga made it be.

  • Budgiecat

    I bought a PS1 in 1995

For Battle Arena Toshinden, Ridge Racer and Dragonball Z Ultimate Battle 22 (using the spring and tape trick) :P

    • McPoo

Is that the same as the blu tack trick?

      • Budgiecat

        Never heard of that one..

Spring n’ tape basically you load the game with the U.S. PS disc with the lid up, then when the screen comes on, you insert the import disc while holding down that button inside the lid with either tape or the spring…

        • McPoo

Yeah think it’s the same thing, more or less. I was only 6 when I got my PS1 I think, my dad used to do it for me.

He’d put blu tack in the back corner of the disc tray, where the pop up lid met the disc area when it was closed. Then I’d start up this cheat disc I have, use that to stop the playing disc, then take it out and replace it with a foreign or copied game.

  • Djkarl Pierre

I was 9 when PS1 came out, I got the PS2 when I was 18, three years later I brought the PS3. So now i’m contemplating on getting the PS4 next month or wait until next year .

  • AdamBoy64

Well, the nostalgia bit doesn’t do anything for me. (probably because my first Sony console was the PS3).

Still, a cool idea for a promo.

The Memories! So Nostalgic. Love Sony & Always Will. #4ThePlayers

  • Zefhar

I had to watch it three times. It’s awesome!

Did you guys notice the change of the music theme? It starts kinda 8-bit-ish and ends up very modern.

I also liked the way the TV evolves with time, of course it’s always a SONY set.

  • Raiu

    Two words: Dem feels…. ;_;

I think the actors in the video represent teenagers in different time periods, not growing up…. It would have explained why the actors and room are stayed the same throughout the video…

  • ddsfan2

Easily my favorite console maker, (the only one that doesn’t change wildly every generation) and while I’m not exactly jumping to get a PS4 yet, (almost no games that I care about, even less than the PS3) I’ve been very happy with the game selection on every Sony system, from the PS1 to the Vita.

People may complain that they focus almost exclusively on AAA western games, (in particular SHMUP fans regarding the PS3) but they are so focused on third party support that they end up getting a wide variety of games within a year or so, regardless of their arrogance or laziness.

    • Budgiecat

I just wish they had locked down FF XV & KH III as exclusives.

Really want XBox to be buried this gen once and for all…

      • ddsfan2

Agree, they are incredibly lazy about Japan, they think that they will just get it for free

        • McPoo

Or they know that the work they’ll put into appealing to Japan would be better spent elsewhere.

Oh wait, did you mean Sony are being lazy? My mistake if that’s the case!

          • ddsfan2

            Yep, I’m talking about Sony.

Microsoft works their ass off trying to succeed there

      • McPoo

Why? A little competition is healthy, isn’t it? It made Sony pull their finger out at the end of this generation. I got my PS3 a few years ago and never used it, because it just wasn’t as good the 360. In the past year or so they’ve pumped it full of worthwhile exclusives and excellent PS+ content! would they have done that without the close competition from Microsoft?

If anyone should leave the home console market, it’s Nintendo. They’re contributing nothing of value, and the only one they’re competing with is themselves.

      • EX+

Same here. FFXV and KH3 on the bone are just pointless ports.
