Fang is glad you could make it. Mind giving her a hand?

Square Enix has released a new set of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII screenshots, the majority highlighting the reappearance of Oerba Yun Fang.

After Final Fantasy XIII, Fang and Vanille transformed and slept within a crystal pillar preventing the collision of Cocoon and Pulse for centuries, but awaken in Lightning Returns. At first, they lived under the care of the Order, until Fang set out for the Dead Dunes, Nova Chrysalia’s barren desert, in search of a long-lost relic.

Lightning eventually reunites with Fang to explore the ancient ruins buried beneath the sands of the Dead Dunes. Fang will fight alongside Lightning during battles here.

You’ll also see screenshots of the ‘Last One’ Skeleton monster. There are a limited number of monsters for each species in Lightning Returns, and the last survivor of a species is known as the Last One. It is “extraordinarily powerful,” but when it’s eradicated, the species becomes extinct. Of course, if you find the battle difficult, you can always use Lightning’s EP Escape ability. Although some monster species can never be completely destroyed.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is due out November 21 in Japan, February 11 in North America, and February 14 in Europe.

“There are a limited number of each monster species in Lightning Returns, and the last survivor of a species is known as the Last One”
I’m not sure what to think about that feature — I think there are some cases in which you actually want to be able to confront some ennemies thoughout the whole game ; especially those which are xp rewarding ++. Tomberries ? Cactuars ? You mean you can kill them all and they don’t appear again ? That’s kinda sad :(

To be fair, this has been known for a loooooooooong time. I’m fine with it, honestly. The game is meant to be playable multiple times.

      • alexei

to be fair , if this feature is fine with you that not mean its fine with anybody else .. ..that guy have a point . and not everyone have luxury to play a game multiple time

        • Samsara09

life is tough buddy, there is no going around it.Also, rpgs are meant to be played over, and over, and over again, just like how you read a good book many times.this one here, however, looks short, compared to some huge rpgs out there,so if that is not enough, well, maybe some people should reconsider playing rpgs.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Ahem… To be FAIR, I never said it WOULD be fine with everyone else. Also, if you go into this game (even after following the news for it) and expect to play it once, and be done, then you only have yourself to blame.

Didn’t think posting a single opinion could raise an argument like that. As I don’t plan on buying the game for now I just didn’t check all the news on it, thus thought this feature was new. But I still think this feature – even though xp is not gained through battles (I thought it was a Final Fantasy…) – is kinda weird in a game like that.

            • syaznifaiq

you have to be careful mate , this site have some people who cannot see somebody else raise an opinion which seem did not fit into their idealism ..

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

What defines a ‘Final Fantasy’ title at this point though? We’ve had ones that didn’t even have a level system, we’ve had ones that allowed us to reach level 100, some were tactics games, some were fighting games, some were action games, some were online games, and we even have a rhythm game. I think people are only fooling themselves if they think there’s a specific way that a Final Fantasy game should be since they have been changing since Final Fantasy I to where we are today.

              • SaveTheDay

“fighting games”, “rhythm game”, “tactics game” were not part of the “numbered”, “main” serie. These were spin-off, or call them how you want. Seriously how can you put theatrhythm on the same level as the main serie ?
LR:FFXIII is the direct sequel of FFXIII-2, therefore should be considered as FFXIII-3. As part of the “main” FF serie, I just expected something that would get along with that. But again, that’s just my opinion. Future may prove me wrong, and that these new features are eventually great. (I hope so :) )

                • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

It doesn’t matter, honestly. They have retconed the series to shit, man. See:

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, etc.

Also, I can pretty much debunk your theory by pointing out that XI and XIV are part of the “main series”, but they’re strictly online games and nothing like the others. So yeah… People really need to stop treating the numbers as if they mean something. They’re just a formality.

“if you go into this game and
expect to play it once, and be done, then you only have yourself to
            blame”

yeah of course , becoz we live in this world only to play video game right ? so screw work, family, friend, other relationship and anything else between

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Again, not what I said. Please stop taking my words out of context. SE has made it ABUNDANTLY clear that you won’t be finished with this game on one playthrough. Do you seriously act this way when you realize you’re probably going to be playing through action games (see: Killer is Dead, Devil May Cry, Uncharted, etc.) multiple times…?

Nobody is saying you should screw everything else just to play the damn game. Good grief. Get a hold of yourself.

there are a few reasons for this feature. one is that in this game, xp is not gained by defeating enemies but by completing quests and obtaining/synthesizing better equipment. second is that it fits very well into the whole ‘end of the world’ theme of the game.

  • syaznifaiq

so first, they put the freaking time limit and now this, ‘a limited number of each monster species’ ?… well done and thank you SE . you make my decision to choose whether to buy ToS HD or this game in February next year a lot easier now ..

I hope for a JP demo and later on, at the end of january, A NA/EU demo.

I’m not liking all these limitations Square. If you’re trying to challenge games like Skyrim then this is going about it the wrong way. I really hope the battle system and end-game content make up for it. At least time doesn’t pass during battle. I still look forward to this game and I’m even importing the controller bundle….don’t let me down Square.

    • Mel Yi

what ‘restrictions’ are these? not giving you the ‘freedom’ to fight an enemy you have already fought a hundred times, a hundred times more? silly me, of course fans would prefers fighting low level minions over and over again to ‘level up’, instead of testing the tactics learned from battling said low level foes against the ultimate boss fight of each species. why are jrpg fans so obsessed with meaningless grinding?

  • Articuno76

Limitations create compromise which create meaningful choices (well…sometimes).

A good example is Persona 4; you can spend your afternoon fighting or fishing…but you can’t do both. If you could do everything then nothing you did would matter.

If these limitations harmonise correctly it could create an on-going situation where the player is pleasantly agonised with compromise (which is how JRPGs create meaningful player choice).

I get the impression this game is going to be quite a bit shorter than previous FF’s but with more variation on subsequent playthroughs; kind of like a visual novel where you have to complete the game on varying paths before the last path/true ending is revealed.

    • Mel Yi

      well said

  • Budgiecat

Why do they keep doing this? This news isn’t new and you can’t play as Fang anyway…
