"Horrifying anxiety" from "the father of survival horror."

Bethesda Softworks and Tango Gameworks have released the Tokyo Game Show gameplay trailer for The Evil Within.

The Shinji Mikami-directed horror game is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2014.

Watch the trailer below.

  • Charlie

Am I the only who flinched when they saw the four-armed, bloody woman?

    • Alkhan

No, I did too. I get excited when I see REAL horror games where your character isn’t touting around an arsenal weapons.

      • Charlie

I agree, modern horror games are mostly terrible.

        • 罪罰

I was playing Outlast last night, it is alright.

          • Charlie

Not a big fan of first person games. I honestly find third person experiences much scarier..

        • Budgiecat

          Siren Blood curse is cool.

          • Charlie

Siren Blood Curse is the only “true” survival horror game this gen. Shame it’s pretty rare.

    • Gigus

It would really be funny and heart pumping if they incorporated the four armed lady with RE2 antics. Just imagine how badly your heart will race if she just jumped out at you (without warning meaning no music amping up to prepare you) while you explore eerily quiet narrow corridors of the mental institution (assumption on the location). Long sentence, out of breath lol

      • Charlie

I actually prefer build-up because it really builds up the tension and paranoia. But yes, her popping out of nowhere would be pretty terrifying.

        • Gigus

Everyone has their preference. Dead space 1 & 2 did that alot and it was fun. 3 just ruined it for me. Building up to a tense moment is good but it becomes very predictable for me if its done way too much.

          • Charlie

Dead Space wasn’t very scary though. Granted I liked the game but it just wasn’t as scary as everyone was making it out to be. Haunting Ground handled build-up extremely well (watch the scene with the maid and you’ll see what i mean).

            • Gigus

Like I said earlier, everyone has a preference. I didn’t like haunting ground. It did bring a lot of good homages from the clock tower series but the scares in the game felt washed out and I couldn’t stop comparing it to clock tower.

              • Charlie

Washed out how? Not to mention, Haunting Ground was originally meant to be Clock Tower 4.

                • Gigus

It just ended up being predictable when the game tries to scare you with the maid and I still couldn’t stop comparing it to CT. Like I mentioned before, people have their preferences. I am aware that the game was meant to be CT 4 but they should have just done it rather than come up with something new. It also tries to do a silent hill thing with the car crash which kinda made it cliché. Sorry thats just how I feel about the game. Feel free to object.

                  • Charlie

Predictable? I know it’s your opinion, but how did you foresee that a clone of Fiona’s father wanted to impregnate her? That was the tremendous, unforeseeable twist in the game. The car crash doesn’t share similarities with Silent Hill whatsoever.

                    • Gigus

Whoa, I think you’re not reading my comment very clearly (my fault, didn’t clarify). I meant the scares in the game, meaning gameplay. I guess its my fault for not being clear. I did find the puzzles very challenging and enjoyable. I’m also not comparing the car crash from silent hill and haunting ground to the core. It just came to mind when I was playing the game. You know car crash, wake up in awkward place, so own and so forth.

To be honest I’m just gonna stop before anymore miscommunication happens. Again I just didn’t find the game all that scary but you did and I respect that. So there is no point in trying to figure out why I wasn’t impressed with the game cause I’ve explained my opinion. Maybe in another post we’ll find something we both can agree on.

So agree to disagree lol. On a small note, I assumed we were only talking about gameplay scares since thats the only thing I was talking about in my very first comment to your post.

                    • Charlie

Fair enough, I respect your opinion. To tell you the truth, I didn’t find HG THAT scary (it was more disturbing than scary). In fact, nothing really scares me with the exception of Silent Hill, Siren and Project Zero (these games gave me a plethora of mini heart attacks).

                    • Gigus

The only games i find scary and disturbing are re 2, clock tower 2 and dead space 1. I do understand that many people do not find ds1 scary but to me it is due to the plot devices used in its story. In this day and age religion is still one of the most powerful influential teachings and put in the wrong hands, it can do horrible things. Amnesia series is pretty good. Gives off a good tense feeling. Even the slender man game is surprisingly fun but it got old fast.

  • DarthBrian

    Damn, that looks good. O_O

    • EX+

FFXV is skipping TGS… just when I was about to fanboy…

      • DarthBrian

I don’t see how that relates to my comment but I welcome it regardless!!! ^_^

        • EX+

I know it’s off topic, but it bums me out.

          • Ivan Junior

I know your pain, dude. XV looks promising *O*

            • Budgiecat

As it did in 2006….seven fucking years ago…..

        • Ivan Junior

I lol’d so hard at his nonsense comment xD

  • Xaltmas

    #2spooky4u

Nice to see Bethesda continue to push games that no other AAA publisher would.

  • Alex TSi

    Great!
Can’t wait for this game, art is cool and … IT IS A MIKAMI HORROR GAME !!!

  • Ivan Junior

This is just what Crapcom forgot to do, and tried somewhat (RE:Revelations). Well, watching this trailer made my decision, gonna buy it day one!

  • Xaltmas

Never been that big into horror games, but I’ll be picking this up for sure.

People give Bethesda a lot of shit, but you don’t see anyone else putting this kind of money behind a horror game these days.

  • Rogerrmark

Looks more survival than RE could ever be nowadays(except for Revelations, that kicked ass)

    Hyped!

    • Budgiecat

Revelations changed Jill’s face (Julia Voth) which pissed me off. Capcom always somehow finds a way to troll their fans no matter what…

    • DrForbidden

I hated Revelations almost as much as 6, unfortubately…

  • Raoni Marques

    Day one for sure

  • TimRobbins

Not familiar with the game, my mind read the headline as gameplay footage for the “The Evil Within Tokyo Game Show,” which would be awesome.

Though I was mistaken, thankfully the game does indeed look awesome. Even without game show evil.

  • Gigus

Didn’t they show this already at Sony’s Pre-TGS conference?

    • Xaltmas

Yup, but this is from Bethesda’s official YouTube channel. Better quality and all that.

      • Gigus

Not sure about the quality (looks the same to me) but that makes sense since bethesda is publishing it.

  • Budgiecat

Cop dude with the glasses and the female cop look much cooler than the main character thats my only gripe…

  • futuristic_imagination

I hope at some point in game you get to play as Joseph or Julie.
