Persona under the same wing as Sonic and Yakuza.

Update 2: Sega has confirmed its acquisition of Index. More here.

Update: Following Nikkei’s report on Sega’s Index acquisition, Sega has put out a press release stating “This is not something we have announced.”

Original: Sega Sammy will acquire Atlus parent company Index for approximately 14 billion yen in November, according to a report from Japanese news site Nikkei.

Atlus is well known as the publisher and developer of the Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and Etrian Odyssey series.

Sega, as well as J Trust, were one of the approximately 20 buyers reportedly interested in purchasing Atlus when it was up for auction last month.

I have NO idea how it would work, haha. Maybe summon your persona as a unit and you can only have it move a certain number of turns before it goes into a ‘cooldown state’. You’d have to choose your units carefully though since they could only carry one persona on them at all times instead of learning multiple (just have their persona evolve with more training). The human/host would take more damage than the persona, obviously, but you could equip your characters with guns, katanas, that sort of thing.

There is nothing wrong with Sega acquiring Atlus. This may even be great new for all those VC3 fans – Sega now has a unique localizing company and a publisher for JRPGs in the US.

Please look forward to seeing VC3 in the US. Please also look forward to even more opportunites for those Sega RPGs that never made it to the US due to Sega itself.

    Atlus USA will change everything.

Also, please look forward to Phantasy Star Nova from Atlus as well.

3DS fans will get your 3DS games.

Sony fans will get your Sony games.

You should be rejoining at the missed opportunities. Sega Sammy is different from Sega.

    • Bryce Blalex Douglas

You may have a good point here. With Atlus USA, Sega now has a company with a proven track record of doing great localizations and doing pretty good numbers for their games too. I mean even Catherine did well out here and that was a niche title.

Hopefully we do see Sega teaming with Atlus USA to bring some of their RPGs over this way. Definitely looking forward to PS Nova and hoping they bring it over.

    ATTENTION EVERY ONE!

This is the FINAL WEEK to tweet @giocorsi about the types of games you would like to see come to playstation platforms. (This includes stuff like localization efforts!) Seeing as how SEGA and Sony are working together on Phantasy Star NOVA, certainly the SCE relationship could extend to the west, which means Sony’s recent third party production team could help out, thus leading to more localized projects.

So tweet to @giocorsi about the SEGA stuff youd like to see on PS3, PS4, and VITA in light of this recent buy out. Please, vote up this comment to let people know!

    Thank you.

    • jujubee88

Ahhhhh. Why so many votes down? :(

      • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Probably because that guy will do nothing to help bring games over and it is pointless plus your ideas that things will be localized thanks to this is too optimistic. Realistically it means nothing but possibly less Atlus games in the west, but with Atlus USA hopefully Atlus games will still come at least and not end up like Sega’s games.

        • Luna Kazemaru

or it means sega just going to let atlus do their own thing I don’t see them holding a gun to relic’s head.

          • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Like I said with Atlus USA hopefully it means nothing will change. Sega will let them make their own games, yes, but localization is the concern, but with Atlus USA in place this will hopefully not be an issue.

        • jujubee88

It’s not just one guy. The point of his team is to network across differen’t huge companies in the west and east and to eventually come up with projects another team (hired by Sony) can make come true.

So like Borderlands 2 on VITA, Sony picked the Divekick creators to do the port of the game. Gearbox trusted them and the project is a reality (where as it was just an idea no one could do anything about before).

If not Sony than, yes I would hope ATLUS USA would bring over stuff like Persona 5. And I hope no one is out of a job after this. (Looking at the human elements of this news)

      • sherimae1324

dont mind them juju-chan they are just a bunch pessimists.
who would have thought that senran kagura would be localized and project diva f too

and most of all borderlands 2 for vita is like pipedream but sce 3rd party production team make it happen
        and also minecraft

thanks for reminding me, ill go to twiiter and do my part ^_^

        • jujubee88

Yeah, and I bet SE wouldn’t even had said they were thinking about releasing Type-0 where it not for the platform Sony gave fans to show their enthusiasm that they wanted it localized.

Good point. Please, do tweet about it. ^^

  • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Well… not too surprising… and since Atlus USA still exists hopefully this won’t effect anything.

  • Robbyfishersora

At least I don’t have to buy a Wii U to play SMT/persona, but will the games still come?

    • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Well DS2BR is still coming. P5 is also still in development. EOU is still coming in 2 weeks. When the two aforementioned games are done, and released in Japan with any luck since Atlus USA still exists they will still come as well.

      • Robbyfishersora

        Good.

        • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

Nothing will change likely, with luck, people hoping for Atlus to localize Sega’s games are fooling themselves. Sega still has its own US branch and is fully able to localize their own games and won’t ask Atlus to do it since they own them it is still “the same money.” So to say.

      • 罪罰

SEGA has made questionable decisions in recent years though some of them are understandable from a business stand point and some are just silly. SEGA in Japan is doing just dandy, most of the concern is the localization. We haven’t gotten various games for some unknown reason. Skepticism is completely understandable.

    • GhostNomad

Since when do we need a good excuse to go apeshit?

  • LastBoss

I’m interested to see what will come of this, maybe SEGA can gain some new footing with the ATLUS brand.

  • Sevyne

I was ready to cry tears of pure sadness in these comments, but I took a few deep breaths and calmed down a little bit first. I’m just going to try to stay positive and hope they just let Atlus do as they always do.

  • http://kazriko2.tumblr.com Kazriko Redclaw

I don’t know if I’m optimistic or pessimistic, but here’s the possibilities for this purchase as it pertains to the US:

Atlus is known for bringing over and publishing games that bigger companies would consider too low margin/profit to be successful. Sega, on the other hand, is one of those big companies. They often refuse to bring over their own titles because they think it wouldn’t make enough profit for them.

The possible good: Atlus USA could start bringing over the Sega titles that Sega thinks wouldn’t sell well over here.

The possible bad: Sega could force Atlus to focus on only the big titles and abandon all of the nice, niche titles that they have been publishing, and then refuse to allow anyone else to bring them over here.

The possible catastrophic: Sega could close down the Atlus USA publishing arm entirely.

I’m really, really hoping it isn’t the latter two options.

I’m actually pretty stoked about this, much better than one of the console holders to acquire Atlus (imo), and this could also increase the odds of actual Sega localizations. Call me optimistic, but I don’t think that it will affect Atlus too much either. I hope to see a high budget game from Atlus at some point, that would be amazing.

Beyond that, I can’t think of many companies that are a good fit for Atlus, other than Sega. Why is everyone so convinced that Sega is broke? I seriously doubt that is the case…

For me to stop this farce

    Oh where is my Atlus?
    And I got no power
    I’m standing alone, No way
    Calling out your name

Not the ideal company, but substancially better than any first party like Sony or Nintendo acquiring them; exclusives blow, but in the case of Atlus it would simply be devastating. I only own Sony platforms, but even then I recognize that the merits of Atlus titles come in the devs own independent decisions to develop for the platforms that suit their ideas best. So yeah— SEGA, again, is not ideal, but is a far-cry from the worst.

We’ll just have to wait and see whether or not SEGA draws Atlus more toward mobile projects than dedicated gaming platforms. In some ways it is certainly possible; mobile is treated not only as an equal gaming platformer by gamers in Japan, but also core games do succeed on the mobile platform. No less, as Kadokawa hooked Grasshopper, this may be the same routine; SEGA obviously knows that Atlus knows how to make a damn good videogame, and so maybe they’ll just stay the heck out of their way. If anything, SEGA may finally be able to offer Atlus what it has always lacked (in the west); an approachable, widespread marketing campaign that will finally deliver their titles the universal acclaim and success that they certainly deserve.

    • bloodiOS

While I see absolutely nothing wrong with Sega acquiring Atlus, the involvement of Sega of America is a whole different matter.

    • Elvick

It depends on factors we wouldn’t know. Would becoming first party eliminate their publishing abilities completely? Or would they be allowed to continue? Would they allow them freedom?

As far as I know, no first party has purchased someone like Atlus before. A company that develops and publishes games. So there’s nothing to compare it to. Just assumption.

To assume the worst out of a first party, while treating Sega differently is ridiculous.

Either assume the worst of both, or don’t make that comparison at all. If you’re going to compare them, compare them in the same way.

And exclusives have benefits. There’s a reason most of Atlus’ games aren’t multiplatform.

      • almostautumn

Ridiculous. There’s a clear difference between either Nintendo or Sony buying Atlus than SEGA; all of their titles would be subjected to the machine of their parent-company. As it is, both the consoles and handhelds equally offer unique strengths of their own that a creative team like Atlus both understand and can take advantage of in the vision of their own projects— in the case of SEGA though, there is no such worry as they are simply a parent-company that may, or may-not, subject them to certain designs and/or censors, but NOT to total, and complete, exclusivity.

And you need to get your head out of the sand about exclusives having benefits. I recognize that the big 3 have the largest budgets and opportunities to offer devs, but that does not mean it necessitates an equal or creatively-free opportunity. Mostly it results in some rather hardcore censors (particularly with Nintendo) and overall alienation of the creative-ideals and values of persons behind the project. Not to mention that having a game exclusive to a system helps and honors ABSOLUTELY NO GAMERS(!). A title being exclusive to 360 that can be equally created for PS3, or a PS3 exclusive that can equally be created for 360—- in the end, the truth is ‘money;’ it’s cheaper to create a single build. But really; how is having that subjection to choice good for anybody? It’s a videogame; whether it’s on 360 or PS3 the gamer, the consumer, is going to undertake it no different than on another platform—- how exclusives affect the gamer is strictly, and entirely, in the negative.

        • Elvick

Then please cite the example to prove the rule.

Where did a console maker buy a developer who also published games? Where is said example to prove that they’d close down the publishing side, and where’s the example that they’d lose any and all freedom in development.

You are making the assumption that a console maker would greatly interfere. While not making that same assumption for Sega.

It’s like viewing the worst out of religious people, then saying that Atheists can be assholes, but that it all depends on the person.

It skews your message, and only proves your own bias. The fact you can’t consider anything other than the worst possible outcome if a first party got them is evidence of your bias.

    @Update
Wait, so what the hell exactly is happening now?

    • Solomon_Kano

Either Sega Sammy’s denying it until they’re ready to announce it, or Nikkei really had it wrong. I’d be surprised if it’s the latter.

      • bloodiOS

Usually, what’s the benefit of denying it at this stage?

        • Solomon_Kano

Trying to keep it a surprise? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

No real point, unless they just haven’t finished finalizing the deal and such.

          • bloodiOS

            Sounds like a dumb move.

          • GhostNomad

The few gaming forums I visit have already gone apeshit over this. If they wanted to keep it a surprise, I don’t think it’s happening.

            • Solomon_Kano

Yea, everybody’s already on top of the news, so there’d be little point. But business types don’t like to break news until they’re ready to say it “officially,” so I guess they wait a week and then tell us it’s true? Who knows lol.

              • GhostNomad

Don’t fuck with me, SEGA. ಠ_ಠ

                • Solomon_Kano

This time next week, Sega Sammy: It’s true, it’s all true! :D

Us: We already know, dammit. :l

                  • GhostNomad

I’m gonna have to clear off my desk so I can flip it safely during the official announcement.

                    • Solomon_Kano

I’m going to have to find a desk. I’m not even upset, but it’ll be fun~

                    • Solomon_Kano

                      Aaaaaaaaaand it’s official!

                      http://gematsu.com/2013/09/sega-sammy-confirms-index-acquisition

                      Hope you cleared that desk!

                    • GhostNomad

My monitor is sturdy as shit for having been purchased back in ’05 >.>

                    • Solomon_Kano

It’s used to the pain lol.

          • AdamBoy64

Nothing constructive to add, but man that emoticon/smiley you did is really neat.

            • Solomon_Kano

Isn’t it? I saw somebody use it once and now I can’t stop haha.

  • GhostNomad

EVERYONE PUT DOWN THE PITCHFORKS AND PUT OUT THE TORCHES! For now.

Sega Sammy, all I ask is that you treat them well.

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I’ve been super busy today. Not much time to post comments. I’ve been reading all the comments posted today, and taking care of some contest material.

I finally have a quick moment to make a post here before I prepare for bed.

I’m really not sure what I think of this. I’m a positive person, so I’ll be approaching this from a positive standpoint. In other words – I’m hoping for the best.

All I really want from this is two things.

    I. I want Sega to let Atlus be Atlus. Just let them continue to do what they do best.

II. I’m hoping the localization’s stay the same, or better yet, improve with this possible acquisition. Atlus NA is pretty strong, don’t mess it up.

That’s really all I’m asking for here.

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

I can’t wait for Persona pachinko.

GUST fans went apeshit when TK bought them. Same case here.

  • GhostNomad

“To clarify (finally), Sega Sammy wants to revitalize Index’s handheld and home console games division. Sega has been loosing money the last two quarters largely due to a downturn in the Western gaming market [according to the article, dunno if it’s true].
Atlus, Index’s gaming brand, has quite strong gaming franchises, like Shin Megami Tensei, and has been making a yearly profit recently. Sega Sammy would like to use the assets of Atlus productively, including the idea of them developing games for smartphones.”

    • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

So games that won’t make it abroad, right?

      • GhostNomad

What I’m getting from GAF’s general reaction, SEGA wants to use Atlus to make money since Atlus is good at making money in the Western market. Now, whether or not that’s the case and SEGA will let Atlus stay Atlus, I have no fucking clue. And as usual, about 90% of the GAF posts consist of “noooo *shoots self*”, smartass comments, and some pretty awesome edits, so that doesn’t clarify much >.>

        Entertaining as shit though <.<

      • Budgiecat

Unless they turn them into mobile games..

        Persona 5….on iOS

        *throws up*

        • GhostNomad

SEGA IS showing an unhealthy amount of interest in mobile games from Atlus, it seems.

        • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

          Or mobile card games.

    • Elvick

So, they want to take Atlus’ profits from what they’ve been doing and then change what they’re doing… (developing smartphone games).

      No thank you.

  • Raiyu

I woke up from up a nap to see this news. This is the first thing I thought when I read the article.

  • Budgiecat

How the fuck did this happen??

Sega has been hemorrhaging money all this gen, can’t afford to make Shenmue III or afford to use any of their brain cells to localize Yakuza 5 but they BOUGHT Atlus??

    • Kobracon

Not just Atlus but the Index in its ENTIRETY. Were they so bankrupt that they cost a 100 yen or something?

      • DrForbidden

It’s 14 billion yen, dude. Don’t ask me where Sega got the money from, though.

        • Kobracon

Was joking, but thanks. I was actually curious. I have no clue whether thats cheap or expensive for an entire corporation though :P

          • DrForbidden

That’s quite a lot. It’s about equivalent to US$140 million. I wouldn’t have thought that Sega, in their current standing, could have that much lying around, so I’m surprised…

            • Kobracon

Wow…yeah with that perspective wtf Sega? Banking on potential profits?

              • DrForbidden

                I have no idea…

BTW, unrelated news, but Sony just announced that PS4 will be launching in the rest of Asia in December…

                • Kobracon

Sweet. Its weird how we’re considered ‘the rest’ of Asia….its like they ignore us….*depressed*

    • Omega_Shiro

Oh god that comment made me laugh.

  • DrForbidden

“This is not something we have announced.”

    Uhhmm, that’s not actually a denial, Sega…

EDIT: OK, now they’ve gone and admitted it.

  • Dede Ogbe

    GOD DAMN IT!!!!

  • $30632660

I’m actually happy about this decision, now I won’t have to worry too much about Altus being owned by a hardware maker, ironic as that may sound lmao.

  • TimRobbins

My only fear is that Sega has the tendency to take something well received and wonderful (Valkyria Chronicles) and try to water down/market to a broader audience (Valkyria Chronicles II). God help us if atlus starts churning out mobile games…

  • LordKaiser

I hope that Atlus localize their own games and don’t let SEGA of America localize Atlus games.
