Send requests to real names or to PlayStation Network IDs.

A short video of the PlayStation 4 dev kit user interface has surfaced from the Eurogamer Expo.

The video gives us a look at the console’s new interface, and shows a few sections we’ve not yet seen before.

One section, clipped above, shows “Name Requests” and “Friend Requests.” According to a developer working on a PlayStation 4 game, these are to send PlayStation Network friend requests to users, either by using their ID or real name.

Okay, that actually looks pretty fucking awesome compared to the screenshots we’ve seen so far. If this isn’t just for the devkits and actually makes an appearance on the console on release day… Aw yeah. Good job Sony!

Still hoping for some sick custom themes though. I love creating my own themes for my PS3.

    • Willgaea

Yeah, it really makes you own it with your own setup.

    • Gigus

Yeah the screenshots never really showed what the ui really looks like when the ps4 is turned on. Im pretty surprised some people think that the ps4 ditched the xmb. Even before shuhei showed it off at gamescom (or e3), the blacklight retribution devs have shown it when they were demoing the ps4 version in a interview a few months back.

  • Syltique

This looks a lot cleaner and more XMB-ish than I was expecting. This gives me hope.

lol If this was the early 2000’s people could careless about a game systems OS UI’s. Oh, how far we’ve come.

This speaks to the fact Apple and Sony have place emphasis on good and basic UI’s in their devices (iOS and Playstation consoles).

    • Zackasaur

True, though I’d include Android in that mix. c: It built off the model iOS built, and even after iOS7’s mimicking of Android (which is totally fine, because it’s definitely a huge upgrade for iOS), still works better overall.

Let’s not comment on Microsoft’s UI efforts. :/

My favorite description of Windows Metro (credit goes to some commenter on Ars Technica):

“Microsoft didn’t invent minimalism; they just made it ugly.”

        • Zackasaur

That’s awesome. Even before their Metro rubbish, their various 360 UIs weren’t too great… Not even counting the ads that dominated them later on.

I really hate how they hijacked there once-okay PC interface with Windows 8. =_= I can refuse to buy their bad phones, tablets and game consoles, but I’m pretty dependent on Windows computer software.

Did i just saw the option to Edit Username?

    freaking awesome!

    • GhostNomad

There’s no account logged in to PSN in that video, by the looks of it. My guess is the Edit Username is the same as the PS3’s users. Y’know, when you can set up a bunch of different accounts (users) on one PS3, all with their own unique PSN IDs, and you can name each account whatever you want. Don’t think that had anything to do with changing your actual PSN ID, though I wouldn’t mind seeing that option for the future.

I think it looks pretty neat.
By the way, does anyone know when a power loss occurs while the PS3 is restoring its backup data, is it going to affect the data stored in the external hard drive (a Seagate Backup Plus to be specific)?

    • Gigus

Hmm…. since its jus copying the data im pretty sure the back up is safe. The data that was transferred onto the ps3 is fudeged up though. Jus basing it off of what I know when I do backup restores on desktops. Im hoping that im right for ur sake. You should really get an UPs so you can cancel transfers just in case power failure happens.

      • bloodiOS

I went out biking and came back just to find out that a power loss occurred… Doing another full format as we speak. Power loss rarely occurs in my area, but of course, it just has to happen today…

        • Gigus

Wht luck huh. There’s no real way to check ur backup until u complete the transfer. Like mentioned earlier, I hope I’m right for ur sake. I know how it feels to lose important data and sucks ass. Hopefully u have ps +. I always back up my saves to the cloud.

          • bloodiOS

Saves are all good. It’s those ~600GB of download contents that I’m worried about.

            • Gigus

You can always re download it. Its just going to be a hassle.

        • LordKaiser

By a UPS Battery next time. They also prevents you from raging when you’re playing and suddenly power goes off and you dint saved the game.

    • GhostNomad

I’ve never had a problem with corrupted/lost data due to a power loss (and I’ve had it happen too damn many times), so I see no reason why you should be worried.

      • bloodiOS

Glad to hear. By the way, what is that creature in your avatar (seems to be a breed of canis lupus familiaris, but I’m not sure which…)

        • GhostNomad

…. Really Annie? Really?! Would ‘dog’ not have sufficed?!

But to the point… She’s just a badass husky who had her picture taken at the wrong (or super right) moment while catching a piece of cheese.

          • bloodiOS

Looks like a star comedian. Very charming.

            • GhostNomad

She is my spirit animal. Mostly because of the whole 8] thing. That or maybe Moon Moon.

  • shogunknight

Very smooth and fast, thats good

  • Zackasaur

Like I tried to tell people after the screenshots of the UI were previously released, the PS4’s UI is an advancement still based in the excellent XMB architecture. c: The screenshots just haven’t focused on that, because they’re showing sub-menus, like video edition, messaging, user profiles, your game library screen, etc.

  • 罪罰

It’s not a bloated, slow piece of crap OS.

    Thanks Sony!

So happy that XMB is on PS4
