Lighter colors, Facebook viewing, and a group of PS4 lovers.

Sony has shared the latest screenshots of the PlayStation 4 user interface.

Compared to the last time we saw it, the UI seems to have undergone a lighter color change. Here are a few comparison screenshots:

Oh, I like the lighter color.

    This interface is so pretty

    • Yuri4prez

I could be wrong, but can’t you change and customize what the UI looks like? Where did I read that?….

Maybe the lighter color is just customizing.

      • DesmaX

I’ll assume that you can change the theme?

Can you change the color of the PS3 main theme? Can’t remember now

        • Zackasaur

          Yes.

  • GhostNomad

I’m a big fan of the current XMB and its arrangement, so this looks like a step down IMO. I’ll have to see what this feels like when I’m actually using it, but so far it doesn’t look as organized as I’d like it to be.

I also preferred the darker color, so I hope we get some really good options for custom themes >.>

    • Gigus

The XMB is still there, which I’m pretty sure you know already. They just expanded it. It does kinda seem a little disorganized but I’m pretty sure they’re still tweaking it.

      • GhostNomad

Yeah, I have a basic idea of what it’s like but still want to actually get my hands-on experience to have a better idea of whether or not I hate it :P

One thing’s for sure though… I hope they fixed the PSN store because that was the stupidest ‘upgrade’ in the entire PS3’s history in my book >.>

        • Gigus

They only did the psn store upgrade for the ps4. At first I when they did the update, I rarely had any lag or slow downs before recent patches started rolling in. Now its just horrible at times when I need it. Its good UI, its just not working so well for the ps3.

          • bloodiOS

Yeah, nowadays, it’s so laggy and stuttery that I want to exit as soon as I go in.

            • Gigus

I’m doing everythig on their PC counter part XD. I just hope they’re doing everything they can to keep PSN secure. I really do not want another PSN outtage.

              • Bobby Jennings

Well that’s why we’re paying for Plus right?

                • Gigus

Tell that to xbox live. People who paid for it still have their accounts hacked. I’m aware there is a bit of difference but as long as people who did that have malicious intent, they’ll do whatever it takes to break in for whatever reason they have.

                  • Yuri4prez

I remember having + when the psn got hacked. It got my 2 extra months for free, but didn’t stop it from going down.

                    • Gigus

That’s what I’m trying to explain to bobby Jennings. As long as someone has malacious intent, they’ll do anything to break into psn.

                    • Bobby Jennings

I’m not disagreeing with you. lol

                    • Gigus

Lulz sorry jus wasnt sure if my point was getting across. Internetz

                  • Bobby Jennings

People get their accounts hacked on Xbox Live because they did something they weren’t supposed to be doing. Even so, my only point is with people having to pay now to play online, this’ll help with the stability of PSN.

                    • Gigus

That’s not the only reason why live accounts were getting hacked. MS security system is flawed and MS barely did anything to fix live. You’re still missing the point though. Even though we are paying for extra security, that’s not gonna stop who ever wants to break into their security. What will prevent it though is if Sony doesn’t do any stupid moves. We all know why psn went out.

                    • Bobby Jennings

Well, in the end it still did better than PSN ever did. So here’s hoping Sony does better this time.

                    • Gigus

Eh…. that’s clearly an opinion. I still find live horrible compared to psn in terms of using the service. I’m still confused to why live blocks you from using third party services you already paid for and can stream on other devices. Like what they always say, to each their own.

                    • Bobby Jennings

I’m not saying that Xbox Live is better or anything like that. I’m just saying the servers and such are indeed better. I was mainly talking about in terms of maintenance and keeping the servers going. My one favorite thing about Xbl was the party chats, and I can’t wait until PS4 comes out so I can enjoy it there.

I also agree with the third party things you mentioned. I think that it’s horrible to have us pay for third party services. I guess it didn’t bother me much because I was Gold all the time to begin with.

                    • Gigus

In terms of maintenance, they were pretty much the same crap. I dont live in the us or eu but the ms and sony presence is pretty big here but their services here are only starting to catch up. It didnt bother me that much either with third party stuff till I let my gold expire lol. As of right now I just feel like sony is winning me over and making up for their past mistakes. They jus need to keep getting more third party support and not do 180s on services they provide.

                    • Bobby Jennings

Agreed. Sony has me right now too. They’ve always had me mainly because I was able to import from Japan with no issues.

            • GhostNomad

It’s fucking awful is what it is. Every time I start it up, I get stuck on either a black screen or on those damn loading bars for at least a few minutes. Then when I try to start navigating, there’s so much lag that I end up going to the wrong place by accident since it didn’t register my input correctly. It’s a bitch when I’m trying to get something started in a hurry before morning PT >.>

It’s not all too bad to actually use it (though I prefer the old search where you could just type whatever instead of having to go letter by letter, making the fucking thing even slower), but it’s just…. Not meant for the hardware that it’s being pushed on right now.

            • DesmaX

Well, it’s works pretty fine with the browser:
              https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com

You can just use it this way if it’s too much of a burden

              • DrForbidden

Or you can just not use it at all…

I’m not being sarcastic here, but when the objective of the store is to sell stuff to people, the biggest mistake they can make is to create an interface that is slow, clunky, and just generally crappy. Nothing kills a person’s desire to spend money at your store more quickly than poor interaction or service.

                • DesmaX

Yeah, that exactly why you use browser version for that. It works pretty well, and hey, you can browse it when your doing internets and stuff, and just put the PS3 to download it while you’re at it.

Less time for the store, more time for vidya

PS: I’m not defendind the store (Even though I don’t think it’s as bad as people say), all I’m saying that it does have a nice alternative

    • Omega_Shiro

      agreed

  • TheBlackRabbit

    This is interesting…feels too…blocky tho

  • TheFoolArcana

    Bring back the XMB.

    • Yuri4prez

There may be a kind of XMB variant you can switch to on this UI, but of course this is all wishful thinking. We’ll see how it goes.

    • Zackasaur

This does have an XMB of sorts. Did you not watch Gamescom?

The PS4 is too feature-rich and connected for a plain XMB to make any sense. They had to evolve. Whether or not this evolution is perfect at launch is yet to be seen, but I like what I see. Very logical.

    • 罪罰

XMB is pretty and simple but not designed for online mumbo jumbo, how much do we struggle to send a stupid message over PSN?. When you touch the technical aspects it is the most fucking bloated slow OS on current generation.Fucking piece @#%#%#$ godammit Sony.

      • Zackasaur

You’re right that the XMB isn’t designed, as it is, for complex stuff like all of the PS4’s social features. As clean and elegant as it is, it’s not sufficient for PS4. It can serve as a skeletal model, which is exactly what Sony have done.

I wouldn’t call it bloated, though. The reason it feels “bloated” for multitasking on the PS3 is that it sadly wasn’t designed with room to expand. They took up some system RAM/processing for the OS and left the rest to devs. As a result, as they added new features, they didn’t have the performance to make things like in-game XMB and trophies very smooth. The OS isn’t bloated, but you’re right in that it can feel that way. Just a technicality. The OS itself is actually pretty efficient.

The PS4 OS reserves more hardware capacity, not only for its new features and much slicker implementation, but also for the addition of future features/upgrades. They learnt that much.

It’s the same story with the 360/One, but at least the 360 OS launched more feature-rich than the PS3 one did.

    • jujubee88

Typical old-blood. Afraid of change. Hehehe. :P

  • King-Podigy-X

I hope they bring PS Home over.

    • 罪罰

      hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha
      no.

      • Elvick

It makes Sony money. You don’t have to use it.

There is no downside, well unless we count the idiotic attitudes of people such as yourself who feel that something they don’t use shouldn’t exist. Putting up with that level of idiocy is certainly a large negative.

  • Invisbin

Looks simple, looks clean. Bring it on >;0

    • JuhRo

      Simple…… and clean……? (.o.)/

      • Yuri4prez

Is the way that you’re makin’ me feel toniiiight……

  • Kodai Ichi

They should have simply transferred the XMB to the PS4, it’s UI was well organized. This UI looks chaotic in nature, specifically that of the 3rd comparison picture.

    • $18114340

This just looks too cluttered. Sony had a good thing going with the XMB, it was intuitive even if it wasn’t always well-organized. Instead of expanding upon the concept they ditched it entirely with the Vita. It’s a shame because it would have done something to at least give their software a distinct visual identity. As it is, the PS4 UI looks like a cross between Windows 8 and every Smart TV UI ever. I guess that’s the point, since that’s the kind of interface their general audience will be most comfortable with.

      • TheBlackRabbit

I agree with this comment for the most part.

        • $18114340

To elaborate, I guess I can’t really criticize the interface without having used it myself. And the visual design is generally clean; I just think there’s a bit too much information at once in there for its own good.

          • DrForbidden

Yeah, I agree. That’s why I nicknamed it the ADHD UI…

I really hope most of the feeds can be turned off.

    • Zackasaur

The third picture is a Notifications feed. You can choose to use it or not, but it is indeed organised, in the same way something like Tumblr is.

  • Bobby Jennings

I’m liking how this looks. Can’t wait to try it out.

  • Tetsu

We will be able to use Wallpapers and Themes, right?

    …right?

    • Bobby Jennings

      Of course.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

They haven’t showed any wallpapers yet, but I wouldn’t imagine you not being able to.

      • Omega_Shiro

        I WANT MY TALES THEMES!!!!

  • Willgaea

I wonder if they are going to get rid of avatars, in place for the headshots.

    • Yuri4prez

No. Showing your real identity is on option, and won’t be mandatory.

I don’t know if you will be able to use your own stuff, but you can still choose avatars instead of a picture of you.

      • Omega_Shiro

actually identity is only seen by true friends like FB ones and stuff so yea your right in a way.

        • Willgaea

That makes it sound like we would all be super heroes. The general public only would know our fake identity, while our friends know who really are.

  • Learii

is cool that that you can take screenshot during the game =D

  • Elvick

I like the darker theme. I’d assume we’ll have some options for that though. At least I’d hope so.

I’ll love the XMB until the day I die, but at least it remains in some way in this new UI. Unlike the PS Vita’s UI. (and I don’t mind the bubbles, but sheesh, XMB is so much better than that is)

I want to get my hands on the UI.

My biggest gripe, which was mentioned by someone else, is that it looks like the standard UI that’s made today. Which I don’t like.

    • artemisthemp

You do know XMB is in the PS4 UI right?

      • Elvick

“at least it remains in some way in this new UI”

  • Omega_Shiro

JUST DON’T MAKE THE STORE A LAGGY PIECE OF SHIT LIKE THE CURRENT GEN!!!!! looks ok though

    • Elvick

PS Vita’s store isn’t too bad, aside from the glitch that softlocks the system when you try to download stuff. (that seems to only happen if you’ve opened a game or something hefty like that)

PS3 store is horrible. I don’t know what they were doing.

They should just let Japan do the storefront.

      • Omega_Shiro

talking about ps3 vita is ok
