The amount of fine polish and detail in this game is almost intimidating. You can tell a lot of love went into it.

    • Zackasaur

And certainly a lot of money.

      • Xaltmas

$265 million, and it’ll make it all back in one day.

      • Fei

More importantly, those money went to actual game development and not into the executive’s pockets or the likes as usual in the industry.

  • Anime10121

Hot damn, this may be the most criticall acclaimed title of the generation! Sad that I’ll be missing out for the first couple months (wanna wait and see if a next gen version shows up).

  • Ritsujun

    OPOS series.

    • Anime10121

Oh come on! I’m not the biggest GTA fan in the world (never even beat any of em), but even I’ll admit that they are 9 times outta 10 EXTREMELY polished and technical showcases! Theyre fun to me in short bursts, but they do deserve the praise….

    • McPoo

      OPOS?

      • bloodiOS

Oriental peach on stick. Very delicious!
So Ritsujun basically said that the series is delicious, which is a compliment, so I’m not sure why the poor dear got down-voted.

  • Locksus

Well, this was expected, but GTA IV scored 9s and 10s but it was by far the worst GTA to date in my opinion.

    • McPoo

Personally I think Vice City was, although that’s not a popular opinion I know. I just didn’t think much of the setting, or Tommy Vercetti.

This isn’t including the PSP games though, I wasn’t too fussed about either of them either. Chinatown Wars was quite good though.

  • Xaltmas

You ain’t gotta like it cuz the hood gone love it.

  • McPoo

Can’t wait, I’ve loved every GTA I’ve played, 4 included and this looks like the best of the PS2 games (San Andreas was always the best setting), combined with the level of detail and life that went into 4.

It looks amazing, and I’m really looking forward to playing it tomorrow :)

  • TheBlackRabbit

Imo i think a ten is impossible…something can always be better.

    • Azuardo

I don’t think anyone considers 10/10 = perfect/flawless. Now, 100% on the other hand; THAT would be flawless. I mean, some sites rate out of 5, but you don’t really see people complaining when a game gets 5/5. Max scores don’t necessarily mean they think a game is perfect; they just think it’s a fricking great game.

      • Anime10121

This, I never understood WHY so many people seem to believe a 10/10 means something is perfect in every conceivable way. It’s kinda ridiculous, in that there’s no point in using a review scale if you’re not, you know, able to use the entire scale…

        • Bobby Jennings

Because that’s the highest it can achieve, That’s like saying 100% isn’t perfect because you aren’t using the whole 100%…Like if a game is 100% complete..

          • Anime10121

Yes, correct 10/10 is the highest THAT particular game can achieve, even tossing aside the objective nature of the author’s opinion, it still is not the highest GAMING can achieve. It just means that the particular individual that reviewed the game, thought highly enough of it that he can give HIS/HER full recommendation to their audience.

I never heard people complaining about Ebert giving movies 2 thumbs up, when that is the highest possible amount of thumbs he can give something. Does that mean the movies he gave such ratings are perfect, NO, it means that he wholeheartedly recommended them to his viewers/audience.

            • Bobby Jennings

Eh I guess you have a point. I just think in this sense, 10/10 is basically perfect. Like if IGN gave something a 10/10(This is just an example, don’t attack me for this. :P)it usually means perfect in every way. But you win this argument.

              • Anime10121

I’m not gonna attack you, just trying to explain to you, that in the nature of reviews themselves, there can not exist a “perfect” because it is all based upon an individuals recommendation. NOT upon an absolute value.

                • Bobby Jennings

Oh of course of course. I just meant that a 10/10 is perfect in their eyes.

                  • Azuardo

                    Actually, it isn’t.

                    10.0 – Masterpiece

                    “Simply
put: this is our highest recommendation. There’s no such thing as a
truly perfect game, but those that earn a Masterpiece label from IGN
come as close as we could reasonably hope for. These are classics in the
making that we hope and expect will influence game design for years to
come, as other developers learn from their shining examples.”

                    http://uk.ign.com/wikis/ign/Game_Reviews

                    • Bobby Jennings

                      Nice to know. Thanks.

                    • Azuardo

You’re welcome. I often think the actual meaning behind the numbers gets completely overlooked by the majority of people. Instead, they see a max score and immediately assume it means ‘Perfect.’ A quick link to the explanations next to each score on review sites might clear it up for some, but for most people they really aren’t going to pay any attention to that.

                    • Bobby Jennings

Yeah I really thought it meant perfect. Thanks to the both of you

      • Impressionnant

Hypothetical: 2 games come out. X and Y. X gets 10/10. Y comes out and is said to be “even better than X”. What score does it get? Perhaps the whole rating-system is flawed

        • Azuardo

          They both get 10/10.

What can you do if you give something the highest possible score based on their score system? Of course some games are going to be ‘better’ than another, even if the previous one got 10/10. Like I said, 10/10 doesn’t mean perfect. It’s the highest score they can give, and perhaps both games deserve that rating for being so good.

Like Anime10121 said, that movie reviewer gives 2 Thumbs Up as a max. So another movie comes out that’s better than that one. What can he give it? 2 Thumbs Up, as well.

Yes, I agree that review scores and ratings systems in general are fucked up beyond measure, but people are looking into this too much. You can still have one game better than the other, but both of them be worthy of 10/10, or whatever that particular reviewer’s ratings system goes up to.

          • TheBlackRabbit

I see that makes sense, with that logic i can agree with the system for the most part.

      • Kobracon

Yep, pretty much why I hate a the number score review system…

  • Xaltmas

I imagine when sites start rolling out their Game of the Year decisions, it’ll be between this, Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us.

    • McPoo

Bioshock and TLOU would be by choices too, probably GTA too.

Can’t think of anything else coming out that looks like it could compete, other than maybe Watchdogs and the next lot of Walking Dead games.

      • Xaltmas

Watch Dogs does have the next-gen hype behind it, but I don’t think it’ll be enough to push it past Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us. Bioshock Infinite on the other hand seems to have been quickly forgotten, despite it’s great sales and amazing reception.

      • Zackasaur

There is still Beyond: Two Souls! It’s not quite as mainstream, though.

Sadly, sites have a tendency to be biased towards multiplats in GotY awards, just to appease the largest number of people. It’s pretty ridiculous, but it happens.

The Last of Us definitely deserves it this time around, though. I haven’t the slightest doubt about that.

        • McPoo

Eh, I was excited for Beyond originally, the interest has waned though. I will get it eventually, but probably not on release. It just looks like a bit of a mess.

I’d be happy with Bioshock or TLOU for GOTY :)

    • LunarHaven

Well, my game of the year will probably end up being Xillia, then Metal Gear Rising a second and Dragon’s Crown a third place.

      • Xaltmas

I still need to pick up Rising at some point, since I really liked the demo. I’m kind of on the fence about Dragon’s Crown though.

        • LunarHaven

Dragon’s Crown may seem a little simple at first, but once you start going through the stages, listening to the music and upgrading your skills. It will continuously grow every hour you play. And there are a ton of awesome bosses which are all pretty fresh.

    • Kobracon

For me, the candidates are definitely MGR:R, Rayman Legends or Puppateer, and Dragon’s Crown.

  • shogunknight

Wow, we got a live *game of the year* title here

    • EX+

Oh yeah, easily. While the GTA series isn’t my favorite, the west will definitely see this as a game of the year.

    • AnimusVox

Which, to me, kinda sucks because I really want ‘Last of Us’ to win.

  • bloodiOS

Nice! Hopefully my 500GB PS3 bundle arrives tomorrow.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Debating whether to pick up mine at midnight. Not sure if I feel like going outside that late. Or waiting in line and stuff.

      • bloodiOS

I don’t think it’s a good idea. You might get trampled all over and die a miserable death. I’m all about ordering stuffs and having them delivered to my house as of late.

        • Seasqwaa

This be the truth. I went to a COD release, even though I wasn’t getting the game…. and it was pretty darn crazy. I’d just say that a little time is better than what I went through. There are some people there with just a tad too much excitement.

  • adhesive

GTA V would’ve gotten these scores regardless of whether it was a good game or not, because no one listens to a reviewer that gives a GTA game a low score.

Hell, I’m surprised The Escapist gave it a 3.5/5, but considering their track record they could just be stirring shit up for more revenue.

    • AdamBoy64

That’s a good point you make.

  • Stb Hernández

    Holy sh!t

  • DesmaX

Yeah, totally a DAN OUTTA DAN
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfbYgt_cffU

For some reason, I’m not exactly hyped for this game, but I really want to play it

    • AnimusVox

I was but then I got tired of hearing about it.

  • DarthNemesis

So predictable as GTA is always overrated but I will pick it up when it hits $30 or comes to PS+.Looks much better than GTA4 though.

  • Learii

I hope they let me change the control to classic like GTA 4 *finger cross*

  • epy

Western gaming media loves GTA, big suprise there.

    • McPoo

I wonder what Eastern gaming media will make of it. I suppose there’s been complaints about misogyny in the game, and they loved Killer is Dead, so they might well enjoy it.

      • Xaltmas

The sales of Killer is Dead seem to imply that no one really loved it.

        ;_;

      • epy

That’s the thing, even if there were legitimate claims of misogyny, hyper violence, etc. in GTA games, the media will look the other way. A witch with big boobs in a japanese game, ZOMG THIS IS A TRAVESTY! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

I don’t even mind GTA games, they’re really solid, polished and well executed pieces of entertainment. The hypocisy pisses me off though.

        • Xaltmas

Makes me excited for the US release of Senran Kagura. The shitstorm will be glorious.

        • Zancrow

          True.
And GTA V even features a torture sequence many reviewers criticised but that didn’t stop them from giving it 10/10.
But with Killer is Dead it’s basically “You can flirt with women and see their underwear a few times?! 1/10!”

          • McPoo

Maybe they also didn’t like the game.

  • 罪罰

If I buy this game now I’ll fail the semester. Damn college I want to play goty videogame.

  • http://www.aurtas.tumblr.com/ Wolfcum

Too many great games and no time to play ‘em all, this is driving me crazy.

    • Raoni Marques

I’m in the same fucking boat and it sucks…

    • Zancrow

      Just wait. :p
I’m currently playing KH HD Remix and I won’t buy GTA V until I’m through with this.
You can’t play everything at the same time, anyway. xD

  • Nitraion

    Holy cow… :V

  • https://twitter.com/Panda_castro Panda

    Can’t wait!

  • Invisbin

And I’ll still never understand the hype for this game. I feel like once you’ve played one, you’ve played them all.

    • César H. Sandoval

I’ll take it you don’t like any big name videogame’s franchise then.

    • McPoo

I feel the same way about Final Fantasy.

      • Invisbin

Yeah I understand. I’m not too into many western games, but I try them before I give an opinion. I just haven’t gotten grasped by this one

      • pekot

        Mcpoo are you serious ?
Every final fantasy game is different

        • McPoo

Not to me, they’re all the same. You can go ahead and throw most other JRPGs in with them too. All the same shite.

    • MosquitoLemon

Yeah I know how you feel. I wish I knew which of these 10s of reviews would tell me whether or not I’ll give it up after 5 hours like I do every other GTA game. Granted those are some of the most fun 5 hours I have in gaming… but then it goes on and on :

  • Gojira Twit

Scores without context? Sure, let’s make them all pointless.

    • César H. Sandoval

You can click every one of the links next to the scores to read the full review and get that context, you know?

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

They’re all linked. Pick your favorite site and read it.

      • Gojira Twit

Sorry, I am ashamed. The links only showed as text on my phone for some reason.

  • Robbyfishersora

it has critically acclaimed scores just like the other games.

  • almostautumn

Just read The Escapist review (lowest on the list); pretty atypical response of western journalism not knowing what it’s actually doing. Surprised more gaming journalists didn’t follow their ‘logic.’

The west: ”Games should be super mature but also have action-cinematics and linear scripts without magic or anything fun in them because I can relate.”
*GTA5 comes out, which expresses total dirtbags who are indeed very modern and human in that they are scumbags who only look out for themselves and want money and are self-obsessed like the majority of americans who have facebooks and complex mobile phones. This is what the west wants, apparently, but then—*
Escapist: “GTA5 is super mature and totally does everything we’ve been saying we want videogames to do and exemplifies our every hateful argument against Japanese art-directions— but it isn’t fun because I don’t like being a scumbag and it’s too mature and too honest.”

  • AdamBoy64

Good scores, but wouldn’t expect any different from the West reviewing the West.

On a personal level, GTA is not my sort of thing. I played #4, and I just didn’t have fun breaking the law and shooting cops and stuff.
I just thought – man, this is wrong – I can’t find this fun.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to take a ‘moral high ground’ – it’s personal preference, but that’s just how I feel about the series.

  • Charlie

Eh, I knew this was coming.

  • Kobracon

    Not surprised…

I was just discussing with a friend the other day that I’m sure GTA5 is gonna be well made and blah blah but in the end, its just too ‘real’ for me now. I used to pop in GTA3: San Andreas to turn on some cheats and do crazy shit all day. Get infinite ammo, turn on God Mode and piss off the army. I realize you can do all this still probably, but then something magical happened, I played Saints Row 3.

And countless other sandbox games, GTA paved the way for other fantastic sandbox games to come out (Prototype, inFamous, etc) where I can do even crazier things. I thank GTA for that service but now, I have so many other better Sandbox games to suit my taste that I don’t need GTA ever again. Saints Row 4 4life!

    • McPoo

Yeah they’ve change direction. I wouldn’t call it any better or worse, just different. Personally I quite like the Gay Tony DLC for 4, as it mixed a bit of the craziness from older GTA’s, with 4’s excellent Liberty City which is probably the only open world game that I’ve played that feels alive. 5 looks to be a continuation of that :)

  • MosquitoLemon

I think GTA is like the western version of Pokemon –
It’s got a massive budget, it’s going to be very clean and well-made, get great reviews, sell a bajillion copies, each new iteration will be bigger than the last and have ‘even more stuff to do!'(trademark), and ultimately won’t do anything significant enough to impress the people who didn’t care for the past 4 or so iterations. See everyone in a couple weeks for the release of Gen 6!

  • McPoo

Played a few hours this evening, it’s fantastic :)
