Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III not in simultaneous development, says Shinji Hashimoto

"We can’t create these two big games at the same time."

Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III are not being developed at the same time, according to Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto.

“At E3 this year we announced Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV,” he told IGN. “Both have Tetsuya Nomura as their director, so we can’t create these two big games at the same time.

“It’s a difficult job, as we want each game to be perfect in terms of quality.”

Final Fantasy XV is in development at Square Enix in Tokyo, while Kingdom Hearts III is in development at Square Enix in Osaka.

Asked why Kingdom Hearts III was announced at E3 if it’s so far off, Hashimoto said the company wanted to address speculation about the long-awaited sequel.

“A lot of people have wondered for the last couple of years if Square Enix has actually been working on Kingdom Hearts III; that’s why we announced it at E3 this year,” he said. “But please, we need you all to understand that there’s a lot to do.”

Release dates for Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III have not been announced. Both games are due out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Obviously. Both games are pretty massive.

    • Budgiecat

Yeah look how long it takes for The Witcher series to come out…

      oh wait

      • gayblackjewishislamocommunist

But they weren’t developed simultaneously, which is the point.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

And each game came out one after another. What’s your point?

        • Budgiecat

Point is it’s possible to create great games without taking a god damn lifetime to make without skipping an entire gen and pissing your consumers off..

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

They make The Witcher games one after another. SE makes multiple games a year. Why are you even comparing or bringing any of this up?

            • Budgiecat

What difference does that make when S-E has multiple development teams? I’m saying it shouldn’t take damn near 10 years to make a quality game. That’s rigoddamndiculous

  • Calvin Chikelue

    Well I’ve waited 7 years for KH3; what’s a few more? :/

  • Karysonson

    soooooo Ps5 then

  • MrRobbyM

That should have bee obvious. we’ll surely see XV before KH3 but I’d expect KH3 out sometime during 2015 possibly 2016.

  • pekot

    March 2015 FFXV
    Sep 2016 KH3

    It just a guess

  • bloodiOS

I honestly didn’t expect them to be developed simultaneously in the first place. Beside, isn’t it better anyway, for them to just focus their efforts on getting Final Fantasy XV done and over with, given how long people have been waiting for it already?

  • Sae-Won Yoon

…I’m just glad SE is at least making more progress, albeit progress in development hell atm.

……what If FFXV does become a musical?
    *shudders*

  • Budgiecat

    ugh…..they’re doing it again….feels like 2006 again

Expect KH III to be released at the end of the PS4’s cycle…..maybe PS5 lol

    • bloodiOS

Probably won’t be anywhere as bad, since they won’t have to spend, who knows many years, developing a new engine immediately after the failure of an engine that they just developed, and then try and adapt it to the PS3’s nightmarish architecture.

      • Alkhan

Yeah but this is SE. They’ll find a way to disappoint people no matter what.

  • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

    KH first please

    • KingNigma

      No thank you.

    • Aly Hesham

      nope..

    • Karysonson

How about the game that was announced 8+ years ago first?
      just saying…

      • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

I was waiting for KH3 longer than that. Also, it was announced in 2006.

Why do people have a problem with me wanting what I want? Christ.

        • KingNigma

No problem wanting it but we’ve been getting KH games for years now and while none of them were actually KH3 they’ve been following the same storyline and characters while XV is something new and refreshing. I want KH3 too but I feel that the wait shouldn’t be as bad compared to XV.

          • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

Well considering the downvotes I had, plenty of people did…

    • Martian Wong

If KH III be released in 2016…so you want FFXV to be released in 2017?

      • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

        That’s fallacious logic.

        • Martian Wong

How else can I interpret your statement? “KH first please” Since KH 3 is still really early in development, it is going to take a while to create a game that needs to do all the scene, battles, VA recording and bug finding process. Beside, you can replay old KH games, while FFXV fans have nothing to turn to.

          • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

            “fans”…

You mean like the previous FF games?

            • Martian Wong

FFXV fans as in those who like FFXV?

              • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

a game you know next to nothing about and have never played… I don’t see how you can be a fan of something you know so little about. You can be interested sure, but a fan?

                • Martian Wong

I dont think “a game you know next to nothing” is the right way to say it. We know a lot about this game such as main characters, the basic story, nations wage war to gain access to the last crystal in the world, what is the gameplay like, and we know that most like it will have sequel. Of course, we dont know how the story unfold itself and how it is going reach a climax and resolution, but that will have to wait until the final product is out. Well, having never played the game doesnt mean we cannot be a “fan”. A fan: a person who has a “strong” interest in or admiration for a particular sport, art form, or famous person. Based on this definition I found online, I am such person that has “strong interest in an art form” (FFXV) therefore I am a fan of FFXV.

                  • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

So when people knew about the same amount of info about XIII before they played it and liked it, were they fans? And when they played and disliked it, did they lose they fandom? Fair weather fandom?

                    • Martian Wong

They are considered fans up to the point they started to dislike FFXIII. Based on the translation I mentioned from before, they no longer express interest to certain thing, then they are not fans.

                    • http://popculturesocialclub.com/ DreamDrop♥

                      I don’t consider that a fan.

                    • Martian Wong

Well…that is up to someone’s opinion. No further discussion can be made at this point. And we already derailed from our original topic~ O well, it is nice to talking to you~

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

KHIII was just shown this year… FFXV was shown 5+ years ago. No shit they aren’t being developed simultaneously.

  • Zackasaur

Yeah, this is misleading a lot of people. They’re both being developed, but they’re not in equal stages. lol That’s obvious, as Versus XIII (now XV) was started before KHIII was. Thus, it’s ahead in development.

But they are both being made, full-time. Sharing a director makes things a bit different. KHIII is developed primarily in Osaka, and FFXV is developed primarily in Tokyo. The KH series has always had these two separate branches, and one of them ended up working on FFXV.

I hope that makes things clear for anyone confused.

  • shogunknight

    PS5/XBox-Two/Wii-V launch title confirmed.

    • Budgiecat

      It’s not Wii-V, It’s Wii-R-Us

  • new_tradition

I’d be worried if Nomura was working on both at the same time. Splitting focus between two AAA titles would be awful for the staff IMO D:

Anyways, it’s not like 1.5 ReMIX will be the last KH game before KH3, so we’ll get our next fix soon enough ^^

  • http://twitter.com/M_Demolish Demolish

see !,ok its so stupid so why they show trailer or make kingdom heart 3 if we will get KH 1.5 and soon 2.5(i hope) its still early for KH3.

and about FFXV no comment as always, square enix love crash your dream :)

    • bloodiOS

It’s even stranger that both were revealed at E3. I’m thinking Sony personally asked Square to show the trailers early in order to generate hypes for the PS4. Otherwise, well, I think they would’ve shown Final Fantasy XV at TGS regardless but not Kingdom Hearts III.

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Then why bother announcing it at E3 in the first place!?

    • bloodiOS

      Sony probably asked them to.

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

FFXV would be have been more than enough….

        • Karysonson

But KH3 nailed it in the bag; people were crying, CRYING

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Then crush our dream later on like what’s happening right now?

            • Karysonson

Yeah but in terms of marketing? genius

              • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

And potentially bite them back in the ass… Square Enix’s reputation will fall down even lower if they screw this up…

                • Karysonson

Yup. But thats Square Enix for ya!

        • bloodiOS

Well, do you remember how despite all the negativity surrounding them, Microsoft still confidently announced that they would kill Sony at E3 (no one expected them to self-destruct)? Well, I think it made Sony feel alarmed at that point and basically went to Square and asked them to pull all the stops. And the result did pay off. People were screaming like mad at the trailer of FFXV and those watching the stream were pretty much chanting “Xbox Done! Xbox Done! Xbox Done!” in unison after the teaser of Kingdom Hearts III.

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

FFXV releasing on PS4 and Xbox One… I know the majority will be on PS4 but still, Xbox Done won’t be guaranteed just like that…

            • bloodiOS

Well, no one knew FFXV and KHIII were both coming to the Xbox One… until E3 was over (and Sony won.) People thought they were both exclusive to the PS4 at that point.
              ;)

              • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

That was E3… Now, the present, is different…

                • bloodiOS

No, what I’m saying is that the whole point of revealing these games was nothing more than an effective tactic orchestrated by Sony to guarantee their win at E3.

                  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

E3 was a show… And the win, does it matter? After three months or so, people forgets the feeling… Now can it translate to success once PS4 launches? Sony may think they have won E3, that doesn’t mean they have won entirely or the next generation just by showing KH3….

The potential of FFXV and KH3 could have been a system seller for Sony(Like how FF7 to PS1) but it’s been announced both PS4 and Xbox One… Chances are at least 40% of KH3 buyers will be on Xbox One…

                    • bloodiOS

Nevertheless, good publicity is good publicity. It did boost the pre-orders of the PS4 anyway. The point was that it mattered to Sony because they wanted to get good coverage from the media.

                    • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Did it or did it not? I’m more skeptical than ever when it comes to Square Enix… I remembered buying a PS3 just for Versus 13 when they first announced it and now, look what happened…

I believe the pre-orders were boosted by some other reasons…

                    • bloodiOS

I’m pretty sure it did, but Microsoft’s self-destruct stunt had a lot to do with it, too. Either way, at that moment, the PS4 got on people’s good side, and many impulsively pre-ordered the system and that was what mattered for Sony anyway. We don’t care much about it now since we read gaming news often but what about folks who don’t?

          • Budgiecat

Despite it being a multiplat game….-_-

            • bloodiOS

Being multiplatform was something people found out after the fact, beside, I think people were happy to see these games anyway, having them unveiled at Sony’s conference simply makes it all the sweeter for Sony.

              • Budgiecat

I’m sayin Sony shoulda paid for it to be an exclusive. The hype kinda deflated fast once people caught on that XBone would get it anyway. The bigger wtfs was all the dumb policies M$ was 180ing on that Sony destroyed them on in E3

                • bloodiOS

I agree, but I guess Sony just wanted that publicity stunt really bad.

    • Kobracon

Simple, just like FF versus XIII, to start the hype train running

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

And just like any train can go to.. ‘Success Station’ or ‘Disappointment Valley’…. Since it’s Square Enix, I chose the latter…

        • Kobracon

          C’mon, cheer up ^_^

How many times has the milk been spilled and spoiled?

            FF Type-0(unlocalized), Versus 13(Left PS3 and gone PS4 and X1), FFXIV(problems, reboot, problems), FF13(still making a sequel)…

            • Kobracon

initial problems aside, FFXIV is great right now though!

FFXIV is fun, Theaterhythm is a blast, we finally get KH1 Final Mix in english, FFX HD remaster looking good, and lets not forget Chaos Rings for the smartphones was awesome.

Theres always good thing when you look for them instead of looking for the bad ^_^

              • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Sony is offering refunds for FFXIV… That’s something to think about…

It does sound good till you mentioned smartphones….

                • Kobracon

Be…cause they’re phones? Have you even tried Chaos Rings yet?

Also the people who asked for refunds were simply frustrated by the launch server probs. The actual game is fantastic.

                  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

I remembered the price tag for it was ridiculous for a smartphone game so no….

                    • Kobracon

Considering it was exceedingly prettier and larger than most phone games at the time, the price was worth it IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I don’t understand the hate here. I’m also not sure why this comes as a surprise.

How many years has Square-Enix been doing this? We could talk about why the delays have occurred, but, I’d like to think everyone already knows about all of those details.

For some reason, the Japanese branch has been notorious for teasing fans way too early in a projects life cycle. This has been going on for years now.

We can only hope development time will be significantly reduced in this generation. I believe it will. I could explain why, but so many have already done so for me in this thread.

As for all the hate. I guess it’s to be expected?

They made these amazing announcements at e3 and all the sudden we should be hating them again? e3 was not that long ago. I guess I’m too busy enjoying Final Fantasy XIV ARR to be upset.

    • shogunknight

I guess you have a point, not the first time for something like this. Im very glad i have ffxiv to play and im pretty sure i would have a great long time with it. Its also great to finally know the two games are in development and it should be noted that they are still working on ffxiv, type-0, drakengard 3 and lightning returns. So the delay is actually understandable, id even be suprised if a date for any of the two is announced. I guess its those type of games one would say ‘coming when its ready’ like cyberpunk and prey2

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Right? You can’t say the Japanese Branch is worse now than it was say a year ago. That just wouldn’t be true.

    • bloodiOS

Yeah, with the crappy Crystal Tools out of the way, and the team isn’t being too busy working out how to develop for the nightmare that is the Cell, I think things will go much smoother this time around, especially since they’re using the Luminous Studio and how similar consoles’ hardware is to PC this generation. I think people are just too quick to hate on this.

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I agree. I think things are looking up. I said this a few months ago, and I still believe. In fact, after playing FF XIV ARR, I’m even more confident things will continue to improve.

        • bloodiOS

Say, how much performance are you getting out of A Realm Reborn in comparison to the latest patch of the original game?

          • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

How does this engine hold up? For me, quite well. I think I have everything set to/close to max and average 60 fps. I use v-sync because I’m not big on the screen tearing. (I’m mostly playing it on PC.)

My graphics card is – GTX 580. It’s a few years old, and it still plays the game very smooth.

Like most MMORPGS. Towns and such usually drop the FPS a bit. Typically in the 30-40’s for me. I could probably remove the fps dips with a better graphics card.

Even with a less powerful card. You can play the game on fairly high settings and it still looks great. It’s also worth mentioning I’m playing in 1080p. I’m kinda interested to see how the rumored Direct X 11 or whatever version patch improves things.

            • bloodiOS

How much better do you think the performance is, in comparison to the original Final Fantasy XIV?

              • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Oh! You mean the old crystal tools powered XIV. The comparison is almost laughable.

The original XIV had lots of issues with the engine. I didn’t have much of a problem on my graphics card, but a friend of mine could hardly get it to play properly using a Radeon card, It also didn’t support cross-fire or things like that very well. The features to tweak were pretty useless, you could turn some up to max and they would drop the performance down to unplayable levels on any card. In other words, it wasn’t set up correctly.

The original could only have a limited amount of player on screen at once. The new version handles large raids admirably. The addition of zones is a great improvement imo. A load free MMORPG sounds appealing, until you play it. You could be walking along in a zone with level 10 monsters. Go up a ramp and when the server managed to catch up with you, all the monsters around would be lv 40 or more and aggressive. It was annoying and made exploring and doing lots of things frustrating.

The visuals are just so much better now. Sure, most of that is art direction, but the small things are done very well. When you stand, sometimes your shirt might blow around a bit in the breeze, the water sways, etc.

The battle is silky smooth. The original wasn’t bad, but it didn’t have very many flashy or cool looking skills. The new battle system does, and it also flows much better. I can’t say if that is some kind of engine improvement, but it doesn’t have that clunky feeling anymore.

One last thing I can remember at the moment. The original had practically zero voice work. The new version has several scenes with voice overs. It’s pretty nice.

                • bloodiOS

Nice! All those years of intense labour definitely paid off well.

                  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

It’s tough to go into more detail. Just like one of those things you have to play and experience for yourself. By the way. Congrats on getting a perfect score on your test. =)

    • kenshee

      Totally agree.

I wish they wouldn’t announce stuff way too early, but then, they sort of have no choice atm do they?

They started doing it a long time ago, but if they decided to stop?
Well, it’d look like they weren’t doing anything exciting at all for a few years, that’s not something such a company can afford to do.

So blame the old decision, not the new ones.

I’m also incredibly happy with ARR, hoping to see kingdom hearts 1.5 HD in my mail one of these days (Europe) and am excited for drakengard 3, lightning returns, bravely default and ff X/X-2 HD.

The only thing I am still kind of bitter about as far as SE goes is that they’re not doing more with dragon quest and what they ARE doing with it doesn’t seem to get localizations. (all those wonderful 3ds games…)

    • PrinceHeir

i think Square Enix has changed over the years.

i think people are quite to forget the did an amazing job last 2010-2011

    Not surprised in the slightest.
    Listen, I’m betting you this:
FFXV is going to release in summer/late 2014-early 2015. Most likely 2014.
    KH3: Mid 2015 or late 2015.
