An introduction to the game's six sisters.

The Tokyo Game Show may have ended, but the Tokyo Game Show trailer for Drakengard 3 has just arrived.

The Square Enix-published, Access Games-developed prequel to the original Drakengard is due out in Japan on December 19.

Watch below for an introduction to the game’s Utautai sisters.

It would seem that each of the guys is somehow essential to killing the corresponding sister. Shaping up to be something I seriously looking forward to. I also like song, although I couldn’t really make out anything from all that mix of Japanese and Engrish.

  • GhostNomad

Gematsu can be such a tease sometimes. The moment my internet decides to stop loading videos, new Drakengard trailer, yaay!

  • DrForbidden

    Wow. Great trailer.

  • Tenshiken

I would kindly like to request a localization, Square Enix

  • new_tradition

So much drama…And did I hear “mommy” at the end? T.T

EDIT. Oh, it wasn’t, but Mikhail sounds like a little kid, omg Dx

    • AnimusVox

Hahah he does, it’s a little weird.

  • almostautumn

I wonder if this game will get a localized. Normally I’d never doubt it, but with S-E anymore it seems that anything this focused with magic and dragons and well-kept hair might not meet western shores.
I know they did the first two for the series, but they were a long time ago and they didn’t fare so well in reviews. I really hope it does, as this definitely seems focused as can be on story, but I really dunno.

    • Budgiecat

      We got Mindjack

But we didn’t get Dragon Quest VII, X, Terry’s Wonderland. Battle Road Victory, Monsters 2, The Nameless Game 1 & 2, Type Zero.

      But we got…..Mindjack

      …Really S-E?

      • DesmaX

Well, the developer showed them the idea, they liked it and then funded the project.

Square didn’t really have any choice when they got the released product

      • almostautumn

That makes perfect sense. Mindjack is a shooter; all those other titles are not. This goes in with my above comment also, about how Nier was localized but Nier Replicant was not.
S-E has created a rather stern ‘idea’ about what the western audiences want— except their idea is downright wrong.

        • Budgiecat

NieR Replicant idea came after Nier Gestalt though. Gestalt is the original NieR. Replicant is just a ‘woah wait a minute, Japanese gamers won’t go for this-let’s do the ol’ Bishounen boy with siscon issues anime trope’ revision.
And just because Mindjack is a shooter doesn’t mean it’s good or will auto sell.

All it means is S-E are idiots

    • new_tradition

Not to mention Drakengard 2 was published by Ubisoft. I still don’t understand how that happened :/

      • https://twitter.com/GaleGlory89 KiQun

Xseed expressed intention of localizing, given the chance SE allows them to. Thought not entirely sure.

        • new_tradition

          Oh, for real? Yay..!

          …Gah! The hope…It hurts ;A;

        • bloodiOS

Square Enix’s localization department better not act like Sega of America then.

          • almostautumn

Neglecting Type-0, an absolute mammoth entry for a franchise beloved world-wide, makes anything possible with S-E unfortunately. Not to mention all of the digital editions they neglected in the west but honored east (Einhander, KH:BBS, Musashi, etc etc).
Plus, Nier versus Nier Replicant exemplifies rather sternly the way they view the western audience.

            • bloodiOS

Which is precisely why I am sitting here, sincerely hoping for the best…

    • Teh Blasterz

Well if it makes anyone here feel better, here’s a quote someone got from a Square Enix official about the game. It seems they are certainly aware of people wanting the game.

“At this point, I don’t have any information to provide, but I’m hoping to reveal information when the time comes. I’m very happy to hear that Western users are looking forward to Drakengard 3.”

  • Budgiecat

No gameplay. Just a preview of characters we can’t play as except for Zero.

    • bloodiOS

More like a preview of the ones you will kill and the tools that are needed for the task.

    • https://twitter.com/GaleGlory89 KiQun

There was gameplay footage during TGS displayed a desert area and weapons swapping system. Though some issues are clearly obvious like Zero and the gangs floating on the staircase.

  • https://twitter.com/GaleGlory89 KiQun

Five is all messed up. A lot of gameplay got streamed during TGS, but unfortunately, none of them get uploaded.

Below is translation for the trailer:

    [ Monologue ]

One: What the hell do you know?!

You destroy our peace, slaughter your own flesh and blood…

And now you tell me… you’re telling me that was all so you could save the world, alone?!

[ Dialogue at the end ]

    Zero: Mikhail.

    Mikhail: Yes?

    Zero: It’s about time…

    Mikhail: …okay.

    • bloodiOS

So, save the world by slaying her own kin. I wonder how that works, and what other sacrifices she need to make. The dialogue at end sorta makes me feel that Mikhail is going to get sealed up or something (either that or Zero kills herself.) I also needs some explanation as of why Zero got that flower in her eyes.

      • https://twitter.com/GaleGlory89 KiQun

Sealed or killed, guess that’s how the fate of the dragon is.

        • bloodiOS

I guess so, and I suppose they make this one a child so it can guilt-trip us at the end or something.

  • AnimusVox

    Dat music…

  • shogunknight

I dont want Zero, i want to use one of the sisters….darn it

  • 罪罰

The characters models and their facial animations are really really impressive, and that music is just a small taste. I’m definitely importing this one when I get the chance.

  • UnderstandingIndustry

MUSIC IS AMAZING!!! Better than Nier? Never thought it could be possible!

    • disqus_rIjnBIKvqC

this music isnt better then the music in Nier. 90% of the music in Nier is a combination of some languages or a made up language, dunno. But whenever I listen I can get sad, angry or real happy or actually the music sooths my soul if you really start to listen to every word with musical intruments.

so,cavia pretty much made the best game ever created, and it got crap reviews because westerns dont like this kind of game, they rather play games like cod that are suited for 16-18year olds and boys in their teens who thinks shooter games is still good.

  • Dede Ogbe

Dear God here comes another awesome game thats gonna leave me freaking depressed for months… CAN’T WAIT!

  • icup ✔️

i hope they pull a Nier and give the west all old ugly ladies. someone we can relate to.

    • bloodiOS

Err… papa Nier was the original, big bro Nier is an after thought to satisfy the Japanese gamers’ need for a pretty boy character. Here, Zero is the one and only version of the character ever introduced, certainly no one is going to waste their time designing a less appealing appearance of her when they are already racing against the clock to get the performance sorted out.

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Actually…. Big bro Nier was created first before Papa Nier….

“Originally, the young Nier was the only main character. “I made the youthful version (the protagonist of Nier Replicant) first, during development Saito-san (producer) talked about considering overseas markets,” Taro Yokoo, Director at Cavia, explained in an interview with Inside Games.”

        Source: http://www.siliconera.com/2010/05/20/barbarian-nier-was-born-in-los-angeles/

        • bloodiOS

Ah, is that so, certainly was different from what I read a long time ago. Well, doesn’t matter though, I’m glad they chose papa Nier for the localization, since I find the parent-child relationship more motivating and moving in comparison to the siblings one. His appearance also seem fitting for a man who has to endure so much hardship in order to prolong his daughter’s life. The pretty boy vision is totally out of whack.

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

I didn’t pick up Nier when I first saw it in store… So I can’t say much about Nier unfortunately….

            • bloodiOS

You should try it, it’s quite a gem.

              • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

I could (prefers Replicant than the original though) but with an old game like Nier, it’s hard to hunt a copy down even pre-owned ones….

                So I gave up….

                • zakou

I would do whatever it takes, NieR is something old-school jrpg gamers must experience.

Not only jrpg fans but fans of a good story, unique characters and especially fans of a really good music, all in one.

                  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Yep… The music is really good and unique…. The only thing that drew me into Nier after hearing about it so much….

The only negative thing I heard about Nier is the gameplay….

                    • zakou

If you take gameplay over everything else then don’t get this game.

Ignore the other artistic parts, the masterpice music with a really good story and unique characters.

And you have the right to do so, not only as preference but also as a “gamer” because games should obviously have good “gameplay” that is why they are called games.

I mean Beyond Two Souls and Heavy Rain are shit because they have little to no gameplay in them :P *sarcasm*

                    • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

“games should obviously have good “gameplay” that is why they are called games.”
Ha…. If you said that to me last gen, I would have agreed with it… But in this modern day and age, that argument is almost next to invalid…. Games are now evolved into something further….

                    • Hinataharem

                      Guys stop fighting D:

                    • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Errr…. We’re not fighting… I’m just agreeing with zakou that games are more than just gameplay….

                    • ddsfan2

I personally like the gameplay to Nier, even though the combat is rather clunky and imbalanced (and just plain easy most of the time), but it is still fun to play. It surprisingly contains a fairly novel combination of concepts from different games of different eras (an excruciatingly easy take on bullet hell shooters, Zelda, God of War, some RPG concepts…), and the world is pretty interesting, in spite of being a bit small.

I think it’s one of the best games of this generation, especially if you care a lot about story or music. The graphics in the cutscenes are also very good, while the regular graphics are OK (but good enough for me).

The dialogue is spot on almost all the time, going anywhere from parts that had me roaring with laughter (I almost never find games funny, but the writing and localization are absolutely top notch) to very emotional parts, and has outstanding character development throughout the entire game.

I knew I was going to love the game from the moment I heard Kaine’s profanity in the intro.

                • disqus_rIjnBIKvqC

ye,its really hard to get a game nowadays-,-…

if you honestly have no idee of getting Nier as a game you should literally give up on gaming.

just 15sec and I got a place where I can order it.

for PS1 isnt that easy to get by,games like road rash
3d,FF7,FF8,FF9.not saying they are hard to get by,but Nier is so easy to
get. So,you dont really are that interested in Nier.

on a side note, go get the game even if you have to pay 40Dollars,40 dollars are nothing in norway, retail games cost almost 100dollars, I bought at retail price at launch, and its
pretty much my most beloved game of all time, the story will blow your
mind,it got everything that a good game has.

                  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

                    Dude… I’m in a place where it’s hard to find old games (There used to be a retro store at where I live but Nier isn’t that old to be put there)…. The time I was trying to find a copy of Nier after hearing about it was a year ago… Also, Nier wasn’t the reason I got into gaming so…. Man, you’re harsh… ;_;

Yes, I wasn’t interested when I first saw it in stores a long time ago… At first glance at the cover, I thought it was one of those dudebro GoW games (Can you really blame me since it was a masculine guy on the cover? First impressions and all)…

                    So give me a break… Sheeesh….

                    • disqus_rIjnBIKvqC

you do have internet do you? or else you couldnt have answered, thats crappy excuse.as you said, its real hard to hunt down a copy on the INTERNET. just because stores like gamestop exists doesnt mean that the only source of older games.

if you only honestly havent checked out any trailer of the game in the past or present you shouldnt buy it anyways, its not for you then.

                    • GhostNomad

Stop being an elitist dick already. You’re making the Nier fanbase look bad.

                    • disqus_rIjnBIKvqC

whatever dude, some people push my buttons when it comes to giving up on a game when you have internet available for you,you can only find everything on internet.
I really didnt try to answer so dickish, but couldnt really help myself when the person is telling me that its hard to hunt down a copy, thats like saying its hard to buy CD’s because they dont have a CD store nearby where you live.

im a fairly nice guy all around, but some people really pushes my buttons.

                    • GhostNomad

Then reevaluate your priorities in life if such minor things ‘push your buttons’. If you read the person’s posts, you’d notice that at first, they weren’t really that interested in Nier because of the cover art giving the wrong impression (valid point, it’s happened to all of us). Now that the interest has been sparked, it’s no longer a game you can just walk into a store and get, but the interest isn’t strong enough to be bothered with looking for it online and potentially planning a trip to a store that has it (if it’s not within walking distance) or getting it shipped.

Not everything’s an option for everyone, so cool your jets next time someone sets you off when they share their inconveniences.

And don’t be an elitist dick. That always helps.

[EDIT] Oh and your CD example…. If someone says it’s hard to buy a CD because CDs are hard to find where they live…. Then it’s true. In their opinion, it’s difficult, and their opinion is created by their circumstances.

                    • disqus_rIjnBIKvqC

my prioritizes is in good order, further educating myself, got a girlfriend, working toward a job.
I guess youth these days dont go for story, they just go for games that involves shooting.

well,if a game I really want exists, and I cant get from any game shop I know I check the net,play.com,amazon,ebay,play-asia.com and so forth.
ofcourse everything isnt an option for everyone, but if they buy games on an console or pc and internet they have they have the option to search for it on the internet.

                    • GhostNomad

Lol…. Yep, keep up the generalizing. I’m sure that’ll get you far.

But if I might suggest something…. Maybe try to improve your reading comprehension. To summarize from my last post, “Interest wasn’t strong at first, then when it was sparked, the game wasn’t easy to randomly find in a store, but the interest wasn’t strong enough to be bothered with further researching online”.

Yes, you ARE correct that if someone really wants a game, they have no right to complain about how hard it is to find. If you really want something, you’ll find a way. If you really don’t, you’ll find an excuse. Raiu didn’t really want the game in his/her hands right that instant therefore they weren’t really up for said research.

Now leave it alone, let Raiu do whatever he/she wants, and let’s all agree that Nier is a fantastic game and if the opportunity presents itself, Raiu (and anyone else who hasn’t played it) should definitely purchase it at some point.

                    • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Now… now… Did I hit a nerve? Not a good way to convince someone to try out a game… :D
Fun fact: The Internet is full of mysteries and useless information for us to discover…

For the second paragraph… I thought I already answered that…. At first glance, I had no interest until hearing about it for some time…..

                    • disqus_rIjnBIKvqC

no,you didnt really,I already own Nier and I adore the game. go to http://www.play.com and search for Nier there and you it ships everywhere.

its true that the internet has alot of bullshitt, but its not that hard to do a search for it and buy a copy of any game this gen.

                • GhostNomad

39 New copies, 21 Used. They have plenty.

Also I don’t know if you happen to live in the States, but pretty much every Gamestop in every zipcode I could think of has at least 5-10 nearby stores that have Nier. Plenty of copies everywhere :P

                  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

                    I don’t live in the States though….

                    • GhostNomad

Then I hope you live in one of the countries that Amazon ships to! And worse come to worst, make a friend in the States and have them mail it to you. It’s a game you have to experience.

            • GhostNomad

I was hesitant at first, then I hated the game without ever having played it (the reason behind the hate was very stupid but in my defense, so was I :D ), then I got over my stupid self and bought it, played the ‘introduction’ (which is a good few hours), I was instantly in love. The story is amazing. Play it. Do it. Do it now.

              • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

We all have our stupid young selves to blame, huh?

I could but life and studies gets in the way…. Coupled with a backlog and ‘must have’ games to play to boot…. For now, I try and see what I can do to remedy that ‘I have not played Nier’ situation….

                • GhostNomad

Likewise, I have a small mental breakdown every time I look at my ever-growing pile of games that I still need to play/finish, especially when i think about how many of those games I’ve played completely blew me away but then I ended up trying something else which also blew me away and the amazing (and unfinished) experiences kept stacking higher and higher.

    • Charlie

Ugly ladies? Where do you live LOL?

    • zakou

      I loled xD

I will just import it, i think there will be too much damage, first of all the voices sound amazing, specially Zero at the beginning.

Then you have this really nice song, if this one gets translated with a different voice it might turn into a disaster.

And last of all just like you said, they kinda fucked up NieR a bit, some say it was better to play as a father but im sure the screipt was a bit different with the brother-sister relation ship. (a slight better plot in Japanese version?)

The worst part is that i am very weak at Japanese but i will still get this game.

    • Barrit

Zero can be the haggard old lady, and instead of 1-5 being her sisters, they can all be her daughters…since you know how the west has no love for their siblings and a mother/daughter conflict will be much more heart felt.

      • bloodiOS

A game that makes you play the role of a mother murdering her own children is so heartfelt that the bigwigs will never let it make it here.

  • Charlie

I really wish I could speak Japanese right now.

  • zakou

Cavia is reborn, and here i thought i will never see a game from them.

Yes i say Cavia not Square Enix because the team from Cavia is developing this game, just the name itself is gone.

    • bloodiOS

Well, they’re part of Access Games now so you could say that instead.

      • zakou

I will just call them Cavia :P

They had nothing to do with Access games untill Lord of Apocalypse and Drakengard 3. Not even sure if the Cavia team had anything to do with Lord of Arcana.

You instantly feel that the Cavia team was behind Lord of Apocalypse just from the game trailer where you hear the music and see the artwork.

Sure they are called Access Games now but Cavia will always be Cavia team for me.

  • Cyril Murasakitsuyukusa

LOL @ the dragon’s voice))) But otherwise the game looks beautiful, can’t wait! ^_^

  • badmoogle

    Already love this song.

  • Derpazu

    Please localize this, SE. -_-

  • RainyDusk

Zatsuon no hazama, yurikago (The gap of noise, the cradle)

Zatsuon no hazama, yurikago, hi no ato (The gap of noise, the cradle, the sign of fire)
Distant, too, is this preview, this heart beat
Chinmoku no sai naka yo (In absolute silence)
    Where is my dream?

  • Potionzmaster

    Wow, want!

Hopefully this gets localized. It looks like it will have a great and emotional story like Nier, and I want to experience it in a language I actually understand. But if they won’t localize this game, I guess it’s importing time! :D

  • Xaltmas

I can’t think of a single game I want more than this, and it’s infuriating that I have to worry about whether it will be localized or not.

  • artemisthemp

Where is my Western release date?

  • LastBoss

I’ll have to pick this up for sure, and the for some reason the art particularly in this game, looks like a mash of Kingdom Hearts/Fire Emblem.

  • LordKaiser

It will feel weird to kill likable characters. Why I got the feeling that what is intended to save the world will instead destroy it?
