An Unreal Engine-based 3D action RPG from Elemental Labs.

Acttil, the Los Angeles-based company formed by former NIS America employees in May, has teamed up with Anaheim-based game developer Elemental Labs to develop a real-time, weapon-based 3D action RPG for PlayStation 4 and PS3 called Reborn.

In development for the past nine months at Elemental CEO Franz Tissera’s garage, Reborn is built on the Unreal Engine, and aims to “satisfy the action hero in all of us while recapturing the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of the classic RPGs that we enjoyed growing up,” according to Tissera.

Elemental will seek $150,000 in funding for the project via a Kickstarter campaign set to launch next week to release the game digitally in fall 2014.

The game is a sci-fi action RPG with the real-time combat of action games and “the depth” of traditional RPGs. It will include “an experience and leveling system, progressive License Board, rare loot, and various character classes, and downloadable content (upon reaching higher stretch goals).” It is set in Neo-Tokyo 2188 and stars a futuristic version of the famed Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto.

“The people of Japan once embraced a life of spirituality and harmony with nature, but now they’re obsessed with technology, forcing it intoevery aspect of their lives, becoming willing slaves,” reads a press release describing the game. “But some see the destruction of their culture, and rebel against the modern system. As Musashi, you will travel the streets of Neo-Tokyo, clashing with cyber-enhanced gangs and oppressive corporate overlords in your attempt to find ‘a better path.'”

Neo-Tokyo is shrouded in lies and corruption. A massive wall stands between the wealthy and the poor as Rena Nakano, cyborg and president of Nexus Roku Corporation, leads the country into darkness. Manufacturing augmentations for human beings, Nexus Roku promises an easier life. But by embedding chips into their patients and buying out those who would expose them, Nexus Roku is able to alter the behavioral patterns of society to be docile and compliant, giving Rena Nakano unrivaled power and control.

Once used to seal away the Tengu Demon Sōjōbō, Rena Nakano is in search for the ancient pearl in hopes that upon freeing Sōjōbō, he will grant her immortality as a reward. Within this societal turbulence, a handful of unlikely heroes find themselves leading the resistance not only to Rena Nakano’s greed, but perhaps saving the world from Sōjōbō, and ultimately death, altogether.

Based on the real historical swordsman, Musashi Miyamoto leads this group through a plot teeming with deceit, violence, love, betrayal and sacrifice against a backdrop inspired by traditional Japanese lore. Rich with philosophical themes and generous subtext, Reborn tells a tale that asks the question, “What is freedom without free will?”

Agreed the Sci fi RPG game that might actually satisfy me more then Deus ex did it had its let downs.

  • MrRobbyM

Sounds really cool. Might support this

  • Alkhan

They had me at ” formed by former NIS America employees”.

    They have my support.

  • Syltique

I love clashing with cyber-enhanced gangs and oppressive corporate overlords in an attempt to find a better path. This sounds like it’s for me.

  • shogunknight

    Nice, looking forward to gameplay.
@salromano, the amount in the third paragraph, is it $150,000 or $1,500,000?

    • Sal Romano

      Amount’s correct: $150,000.

  • Arcana Gear

    seems cool

  • Kobracon

Set in Japan, yet it has a Chinese elemental system?? Odd…

But if they can successfully create a DMC RPG, then I’m all for it!

    • Budgiecat

thats what Im talking about..and so it begins….

  • CosmicNova

How would one support this and what does Kickstarter does? Is it a company?

    • captainhowdy

Kickstarter is a funding site where independent developers, independent movie directors, get to pitch there “vision” to people so they can fund there project with other people’s money. They do this to avoid publishers and big Hollywood companies, so they can get more money for themselves and keep there vision.

      • CosmicNova

So it’s actually random people giving them money to fund their games, like you and me?

        • Alkhan

          • CosmicNova

I see. So what happens to one of theses projects started by kick-starter if they don’t reach their fund goal? What happens to the money that was donated?

            • Niedar

They don’t get any money unless the goal is met.

            • captainhowdy

The money that was donated, gets sent back to you immediately when the kickstarter fails.

Though they can rethink their plans and start all over again.

        • Elvick

Sort of. I see it more as a chance to put your money where your mouth is.

We always say we’d buy things if localized or made.

Kickstarter is like that. We put money down to get the game ahead of time.

Granted, you can get other things as well but I rarely go for anything other than the game/content itself.

It’s nice to be able to actually prove that I’m willing to buy something.

It’s not a perfect system, but it’s better than nothing at all.

  • Mar Mar

    Hitman Reborn … wait.

  • captainhowdy

This could be good. I hope it reaches it’s goal.

  • Panda

Sounds interesting. Good luck to everyone involve with this project.

  • $30632660

I like the history of Miyamoto Musashi, I love when a game or character is based on him even more, which is why I really enjoyed Brave Fencer Musashi for the PS1 and the Vagabond manga.

But one does not simply kickstart a game based on Miyamoto Musashi and I do not see anything about Sasaki Kojiro in the details so the game is automatic trash.

    • bloodiOS

At least wait till the campaign itself actually launches before judging it?

      • $30632660

If the game does not have Kojiro in it, it’s an automatic fail, that’s all I’m saying.

It’s bad enough that the game is getting Kickstarted only to be released digitally…

        • bloodiOS

The guy could be in there, and if he is, I imagine that it would be mentioned on the Kickstarter page, not in this little snippet. So, yeah, wait a little longer?

  • Elvick

    This could be cool.

  • Tac-Mex

This reminds me of Barkley, i want The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa

  • Ni ~Algidus~

i’ll need to check my funds and see if have some money to donate. but first i’ll wait for more information

  • KingNigma

Interesting and I like the setting. I’ll be looking out for this.

  • Raiu

But I would like to see the KS page before committing a pledge…

  • bloodiOS

Elemental will seek $150,0000 in funding for the project via a Kickstarter campaign set to launch next week to release the game digitally in fall 2014.

    Good luck with that!

Edit: I’m just messing with you, Sal.

    • Sal Romano

That’s actually realllllllly little. And surprisingly little for a project like this, which feels big in scope.

If your game concept’s good enough and word about the project has spread before the Kickstarter launches, you’ll get the money.

      • bloodiOS

Hopefully so, but $1.5M seems awfully risky for a team’s first crowd-funding project.

        • GhostNomad

It was just a typo, Annie. It’s only $150,000. Stop being difficult with Sal!

          • bloodiOS

You don’t need to be jealous just because I’m yanking his chain, you know.

            • GhostNomad

Damn right I am! You should be yanking my chain!

              • shogunknight

                • GhostNomad

It’s just this thing that Annie and I do which involves her trying to steam me to death before eating me. Totally safe :D

                • LordKaiser

Bloodios is his wife I think.

          • Sal Romano

Oh, wow. Didn’t even notice that.

I haven’t really slept since Tuesday. I apologize.

            • GhostNomad

No worries Sal. I know that feel all too well.

            • bloodiOS

Hey, don’t worry about it. I’m just messing with ya.

  • DesmaX

Oh, really getting Deus Ex feels with this.

    I can support this

  • bloodiOS

Okay, jokes aside, I hope that they would have some actual gameplay footage readied by the time the campaign launches, because only having devs talking about it like Project Phoenix isn’t going to cut it. Also, I wonder if it’s powered by the UE3 or UE4? Well, there’s a PS3 version so, I’m suspecting that it’s UE3 but who knows (it could be UE2 for all I know.) By the way, perhaps it’s just me, but this is the first time I’ve ever heard of a Kickstarter project for PS3 and PS4 only (might as well have Sony funds the project then…)

  • Budgiecat

I kinda cringe a little whenever I hear Westerners trying to make a fictional Asian setting..(still cringing at the first Red Steel and god awful Asian stereotypes in WET as well as a few other unmentionable titles) .but we’ll see how this goes.

    • cloudfire

      Jade Empire. It can happen

  • Zefhar

    Nice, I love NeoTokyo settings!

  • Invisbin

You got me at Action RPG and Swordsman.

  • DarthNemesis

Ok these not officially in development lick starter games are annoying. Gematsu please put in the title from now on that they game is kickstarter so people won’t waste their time clicking on the link. This is no a retail game as I thought it would be.

    • McPoo

I’d back a Lick Starter. Sounds fun.

    • Sal Romano

As far as I know, 1) they announced it’s for PS4 and PS3, 2) it’s in development, 3) what does being retail have to do with anything?

  • sac23

this looks like a awesome game i will be supporting

  • jn00

This game has art work that does not belong to them or any of their artists. Some belong to a publishing company that temporarily let them borrow it. Here is the link look at the comments about reborn

Also they have used an image with out the artists permission. I have informed the artist about this. I’m an an concept artists who has had my art stolen before. It’s misleading to people who support the game looking at concept work that they did not produce.

  • Wilderbiz

If it’s an RPG can I choose the gender of the main character.
