Publisher secures slogan for Final Fantasy XV sequels.

Square Enix has trademarked “A World of the VERSUS Epic” in Europe.

The phrase, as you might remember, first appeared in the E3 trailer this year for Final Fantasy XV, formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

In interviews during and following E3, director Tetsuya Nomura suggested Final Fantasy XV was just the first “piece of a larger epic.” This trademark seems to reaffirm Nomura’s plans.

Thanks, NeoGAF.

I wanna be Part of the VERSUS Epic

    • Willgaea

      Sell them your body.

      • Noctis.orG

        Count my body too.

  • Pyrofrost

    Incoming, Final Fantasy XV trilogy!

  • adhesive

I think the best part about Squaresoft was that some of the games they made were one of a kind and worked perfectly well without a sequel. It’s a little disappointing seeing Square Enix turning every game they can into a series.

    • Zackasaur

It’s a creative decision on Nomura’s part. He’s telling the story he wants to tell. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Some games don’t need sequels. XIII didn’t really -need- them, but the team wanted to make them as creative projects.

XV clearly needs it to tell its massive story. Nomura knows a thing or two about that approach.

      • Willgaea

Still rather have it cut into parts to get the game faster

    • Willgaea

He said the game is to big. I’m happy that hes cutting it into parts so we get the game faster. I just hope the other parts support transferred data. We could have a gigantic game, but who wants to wait another 5 years?

  • MrKappa

What are the chances this is a iOS or browser thing?

  • Invisbin

Well let’s look at it this way, were the final fantasy games actually any different? Large enough to call it an actually sequel? FF1+2 were similar, 3 and 5 were, 4 and 6 were, 7,8,9,10 were. The only things that made them different was the characters and settings and minor game play changes. It really wouldn’t make much of a difference if they went the direct sequel route. The only difference would be them keeping the same characters and settings.

    • adhesive

Just about all of the games in the series are very different from each other, whether it’s in regards to storytelling or gameplay. Even the direct sequels/prequels were noticeably different from their predecessors.

  • PrinceHeir

    Final Fantasy XV-2!

    • Zackasaur

      Do want.

      • Willgaea

It’s funny how a large majority wants sequels for a game we haven’t even played yet. They should just do double numerals for this one… Final Fantasy XV – III

        • Elvick

They should just do subtitles, but it’s far too late for that.

    • Warboss Aohd

dependz on wot dey do wit it.

  • Sae-Won Yoon

There’s also JUST happens to be another teaser site called Project Destati, however if that TWEWY teaser has taught me anything it’s keep one’s expectations as low as possible, so one doesn’t get dissappointed.

    http://destati.jp/

Still at least the FFXV teaser is reaasuring.
(and on a irrelevant note, it’s my birthday so yeah.)

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

      Happy Birthday. =)

    • Warboss Aohd

anyone else think dat lookz like Kingdom Hearts?

      • adhesive

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I haven’t played KH in a long time but it reminded me of the first sequence in the first game.

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero
      • Kefkiroth

        Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD?

        Maybe just more KH3 news?

        Another portable entry?
Of course, making sure not to get my hopes up…

    • Invisbin

How did you find this? That remake sounds so beautifully crafted I’m literally laughing with excitement.

      • Sae-Won Yoon

I got it from a friend who’s a bigger KH fan than I.

And doesn’t it? I got goosebumps just from hearing it.

    • KingNigma

I’m gonna wait till i play before deciding if i want more. Still interested though. And happy birthday!

  • Zackasaur

    Awwwwwwwwwwwww yeah.

  • Dede Ogbe

In the past i would have hoped this was a Vita game. However i’ve learn’t from my mistakes of ever trusting a SE announcement. It’s best not to get your hopes up.

  • Bob Obb

They split one game into three parts again eh?

    • Zackasaur

No. And they never did that for any other series, either.

As Versus was developed, it expanded into a story far too massive for a single game. It’s just a legitimately enormous epic, similar to how something like Kingdom Hearts is handled (though certainly with less games).

In XIII’s case, the sequels weren’t really planned, but are really just creative projects where they try different things each time, similar to how X-2 was handled.

      • MasterSensei

” similar to how something like Kingdom Hearts is handled (though certainly with less games)”

But can you imagine? Final Fantasy XV part 2 on the PSVita or something like that? that might be really cool

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

the game completes its entire story, but might set up more lik KH

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

And will probably take just as long to come out.

        • Bobby Jennings

Nothing wrong with that. It takes time to make games of this caliber.

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Yeah? That’s what they said about Duke Nukem Forever too. I haven’t really been waiting for Versus/XV like you guys, but even I have to apologize for you guys being put through this long and VERY unnecessary wait. Same thing with Kingdom Hearts 2, which released in 2005 for JP and 2006 for NA.

You’re only fooling yourself if you think this is excusable because “it takes time to make games of this caliber”. Again, not a KH fan, but damn… Not even I wouldn’t wish something so terrible on them like being forced to wait nearly 10 years for a sequel.

            • Bobby Jennings

Well you misunderstand me. I, like you would want the game out fast, but I’d rather they take the time to make it the best it can be. In the meantime, I’ll play other JRPGS that have much to offer. And even though Kingdom Hearts 2 took 5 years to make, it resulted in an amazing game regardless. I’m not saying it’s excuseable, but I understand why we have to wait so long.

              • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Having a game out in 3-5 years is hardly an extreme request and I also don’t believe it would be too “fast” for them to release it in such a timeframe. I don’t want any company to rush making a game either, but yeah… When you have other great games coming out in a short time period, yet there’s still this overly hyped game that’s 7 years into development, it’s kind of frustrating to see. I’ll look at these games that took less time to release, that were still rather enjoyable, then look at this other one that’s STILL being developed and ask, “Why? What could you possibly be doing that couldn’t have already been finished by now?”

This is why I feel like some of these companies put too much time into milking the hype for everything its worth before FINALLY releasing it. It was like back when Street Fighter IV came out and they were saying how it took ten years to develop. It took you ten years to develop a 2.5D fighting game…? Really?

Yeah, I call bullshit. I played the game for a while and other fighters as well and actually enjoyed other fighters, which took less than 60% of that time to be made, more. I’m just saying… While it’s good to not rush things, more time doesn’t always equate to higher quality. Versus/XV is no exception to this.

                • Bobby Jennings

Well we don’t really know what happens behind the scenes of why it takes this long to develop. But for a game like XV, I can clearly see why it’s taking them long. I mean, just look at the game. It’s obviously not even finished yet(telling by how the battle system looks, still needs fine-tuning) but for some of us, the longer the wait, the more excited we are for the game. And that’s where you get your “overly hyped” game from. As with Street Fighter, it is the same. We don’t really know how long it takes to develop. Just because it’s 2.5D doesn’t mean it can’t take longer. Now I’m no game developer but when it comes to fighting games, it comes down to frames, balance, sprites, character speed/movement, pretty much everything. if anything, most of the development time was probably focused on that, but then again like I said we don’t really know what they’re doing during that time-frame. Street Fighter IV is still bringing out patches now as we speak.(and the game’s been out since 2009, that’s 4 years of development technically)Once again, not disagreeing with you, I just believe that time is needed in XV’s case. Also because you enjoyed other fighters more than Street Fighter doesn’t mean it didn’t take that long to develop. If anything, it just wasn’t your cup of tea and didn’t sit well with you.

                  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

It may have not sat well with me, but my interest in it is irrelevant. When you have games like Blazblue, Melty Blood, Arcana Heart 3, etc. being developed at a much faster pace than Street Fighter IV and capable of being just as fun, then that tells me that company X is wasting time for some reason.

Yes, there are always patches coming out for these games or major updates, but it’s just really disappointing for some of these companies to be “tryhards” for a lack of better words. Will Versus/XV blow people away? Eh, maybe, but the same has been done with games that took way less time to develop and release as well.

Hell, even Indie games that were only in development for 1-3 years have been very successful and provide plenty of entertainment. I just dislike this idea that some companies have where they seem to think they can keep their customers in the palm of their hands and toy with their emotions before finally giving them what they obviously want. For example… Did we REALLY have to go through all these other Kingdom Hearts remakes and whatnot after KHII before FINALLY releasing KHIII? Absolutely not.

Don’t get me wrong though. Square-Enix isn’t the only one guilty of this… Just take a look at MGS and all the remakes, HD editions, added trophy support for MGS4, before finally bringing us MGSV. I won’t even touch the topic of ZOE3.

It’s just rather disappointing since they know what they’re doing, but there’s not really much we can do as consumers. Well, most of the time anyway. We’re generally just forced to wait. Square-Enix could simply announce at TGS this year, “We apologize for the inconvenience, but due to some technical difficulties, Final Fantasy XV will be delayed until further notice. Please be patient.” because they want to milk this a little more for more sales.

I certainly can’t think of another game out there right now that’s as hyped as this one anyway.

        • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

XD reusable assets should shorten that

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

            You’d think so, lol.

  • new_tradition

Eh, I think they already said they were planning to make FFXV a series, so this isn’t really giving me any shock values here *shrugs*

    • Willgaea

Yeah he stated this around 3 times. But the news here is for the trademark.

  • Hikaru Lighthalzen

    new dissidia?

  • http://insanechronos.tumblr.com/ InsaneChronos

    Stella Returns: Versus Noctis

  • SuperLuigi

I will prob buy a ps4 when versus releases. Been waiting for almost 7 years for it. Even longer for KH 3.

  • Noctis.orG

Not new. Nomura said the 1st installment is complete on its own, but the epic itself will be large enough for more sequels for it to come. Though still, FFXV updates are always good!

  • Ritsujun

    Stella as MC on PSV.

  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Great! Looking forward to the awesome ‘World of the Versus Epic!’ :D
Also Square, Please Bring Hironubo Sakaguchi Back! For XVI

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves there, SE.

  • redjha

    Dissidia??

  • Ni ~Algidus~

remembers what someone at SE said some years ago…
*we are gonna try to create a game that can surpass FF VII success, and we are aiming to expand that game in all media entertaiment systems we can*
you guys don’t even have a release date for XV, don’t start the milking of the cow named noctis yet

  • kuusou yume

This isn’t a surprise. We’ll just have to see how Versus does. Reusing assets will make production quicker.

  • Elvick

    In before mobile/social game.
