I’m excited but…at the same time apprehensive. They haven’t been the best company as of late

    • Anime10121

Whaat? Ni no kuni and Layton x PR, would like to say hi. The only recent things I can think of that haven’t been that great from them would have to be those collection of small games for 3DS.

They’ve actually been coming back up since crap like White Knight Chronicles.

      • Pyrofrost

I wouldn’t call WKC crap, I happen to love the game. Sure, LVL5 has made better, but I still loved it. I love all their JRPGs.

        • kenshee

I wouldn’t call it crap either, but I would call it one of the weaker Jrpgs out there.
I just finished the first one and played a little into the second and just stopped playing, nothing motivated me to keep going :/

Maybe you liked the online aspect it used to have?

          • Pyrofrost

I wasn’t a big fan of the online aspects. The servers were cheap and not well maintained, and the PS3 couldn’t handle it for shit.

Any online themed RPG really needs to take lessons from SE and Final Fantasy XIV.

However, I really enjoyed the game itself. For me, it was pretty much a blast from the past to the SNES era as far as story telling and character development goes.

            • kenshee

Hmm, well, I suppose it just comes down to taste then.
I just found it to be so very very mediocre usually, it was never bad or frustrating and I’m sure I would’ve finished it if I played it when I was younger.

But nowadays with an ever growing backlog of games I expect to have more fun with than I did with wkc, I just don’t like games that feel like they have filler content just to push more hours :/
The story had its moments but was petering out when I stopped playing. It was decent enough throughout the first one though.

I will admit, it shares (story)elements with legend of dragoon, and that was great… But then it felt like it shared elements and executed them more poorly than a ps1 game did ‘^^ (big LoD fanboy though, so my opinion is incredibly skewed)

But yeah, as Anime said, it’s a mediocre game made by a dev team that usually makes top tier games within the genre.
A good game can be a disappointment, depending on who it came from.

              • Pyrofrost

I understand what your saying. I expounded a bit more on my feelings about it in my reply to Anime.

            • kiri25

I found the online part of wkc to be fun for what it was. Buildingur on geo town really gave it that dark cloud feel and the quest were a lot of fun as long as u had group of friends to enjoy them with.

Of course if u had no friends to play with I can see how it would suck b/c the few times I played with randomppl it was annoying. All in all the it was a free online exp. so I was nvr expecting anything like ffxiv seeing with that game I expect the best seeing as I’ll be paying monthlyto play.

              • LordKaiser

Yeah to many Ogit 2 noobs

            • LordKaiser

They where maintained of the 1rst 3 months but yeah by December the game began to die.

Not only not well maintained but not maintained at all. The forum full of trolls, stalkers and sexual predators and a lot of cheaters using modded saves with GR99 and god mode stats. We didn’t got the Japanese patch that flags this.

FFXIV is not as great as the hype it has. WKC2 combat was challenging and more refined than the WKCI version. I once got back to WKCI to help a friend get a trophy before moving to WKC2 and I couldn’t take the slow battle system.

To give you and idea SS speed in WKCI is LS speed in WKC2.

I’m glad you enjoyed it and yes it was a good average storyline that I enjoyed better than FFXII.

              • Budgiecat

FF XII story was only good because it didnt have the cringe inducing convoluted J-pop melodrama bullshit that Daisuke Watanabe and Motomu Toriyama write up. The problem with the story though was that it was dulled down by too much political drab and had less focus on the characters—-oh and worthless shoehorned Vaan. So despite the superior voice acting XII had over X, XIII series etc, the fault is that the story came off as dull because it was more focused on the political stuff.

And yes I agree I wasn’t overwhelmed with FF XIV ARR beta battle gameplay. It did remind me of WKC and then I was reminded of how much more advanced WKC system is. Plus since it has a story, I felt like I was working towards a goal instead of just doing monotonous fetch quests and listening to drab NPC talk about lore and what not. Plus, regenerating enemies on the field didnt give me a sense of accomplishment despite leveling up as I felt they were just trolling me by reappearing so fast. I understand why its done (its an MMO duh) but thats the drawbacks of playing an MMO. Plus I don’t like silent protagonists in this day and age of gaming.

                • kiri25

I personally believe that FFXIV again is like WKC’s online it’s only fun if u have friends to play with. If ur soloing it or just playing with random ppl u don’t know then yea I can see how both games could turn u off.

The major draw to any MMO is playing with your friends and enjoying the game. I personally consider FFXIV a huge improvement over WKC online as I can do so much more with my fellow gamers.

As for a silent hero I have no issues with that as some of the greatest RPGs in my opinion had silent Hero’s. To name 3 games/series (one considered by many as the greatest rpg ever) dragon quest, suikoden and chrono trigger/cross. These are but a few but they prove without a doubt in my opinion that a silent hero is not a negative thing in RPGs.

                  • LordKaiser

I say that PSO2 is more closer to WKC2 than FFXIV and ARR is open world unlike WKC. The only thing it have of WKC is a big part of it’s community moving to it.

                • LordKaiser

But melodrama is what RPGs need this new generation. I need a protagonist to go Super Saijajin and beat the crap out of everyone.

                  • Budgiecat

That’s not the type of melodrama I’m talking about. I’m talking about

                    I’m a hero! A hero is here!

              • Pyrofrost

I can’t speak of FFXIV in terms of the game itself, I have yet to experience the whole of the content. However, the greatness to hype ratio will vary from person to person.
What I can speak on though, is the actual “online experience,” which is what I was speaking of before. With issues such as lag, latency, lost connection, and things of that nature.

There is nothing that would make me rage more that getting to the boss of a hour long mission or just killing a boss in a long mission; only to DC and lose credit. This happened time and time and time again. I was on the road to actually platting the game and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I used to think a lot of this was due to the PS3s construction after DCUO and WKC; but once I played FFXIV, I saw much different results in online quality.

I absolutely LOVED the story experience; however, the online experience would have likely been so much better if:
A.) They charged a sub for it, and used that money to have HQ servers.
B.) They didn’t have an online portion at all.

              • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

What Final Fantasy XIV has going for it that White Knight Chronicles never really did is support.

I’m not really talking about fan support. Both games had that. I’m talking about developer and publisher support.

Square-Enix has went above and beyond to support Yoshida and the Final Fantasy XIV team, and help them rebuild the game. Yoshi-P is also extremely dedicated to the game.

It’s really a shame WKC didn’t have that same dedication. It will prove to be a difference maker.

                • LordKaiser

I agree FFXI got supported for years after release. FFXIV has a strong hype release about it but the same hyped people now says it’s average. I have no doubt that FFXIV will receive a good support.

In this case average is twice better than WKC Online. The 2 things that made the online experience bad where human based. The lack of support from Sony and D3 Publisher and part of the community who decided to cheat and alter their saves with Xploder etc.

TBH I may avoid similar hybrids RPGs in the future unless the save is only cloud based.

          • LordKaiser

The core of WKC and even more on WKC2 was the online play. Single player campaign was unimportant. This game was sold the same as a offline game and it backfired.

            • Budgiecat

              Yeah that was their mistake.

            • CirnoTheStrongest

Online play drove me to hate the game beyond understanding. If it just had the offline play, then it just would have been a novel game that was a funny little throwback to every JRPG protagonist ever made cheesy to the max

              But…that online play….

            • Anime10121

See now THATS the reason I couldnt get into it. Not an MMO person, and considering even you call the single player campaign unimportant, it makes me feel a bit better :P

              • LordKaiser

But it was still better than several single player PS2 RPGs like FFXII, Legaia 2 etc.

                • Anime10121

Can DEFINITELY agree with Legaia 2 (Sony REALLY dropped the ball on the second game, as the first was fantastic), but I’ll have to agree to disagree on FFXII. I didnt like it either, but it was a well built game, with (barring Vahn and Panelo) a likeable cast of characters and ok gameplay. Still didnt like it as a Final Fantasy, though it was a well enough game on its own..

                  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

You can laugh at me for this if you want. Not only do I like FFXII. I also enjoyed Legaia 2. It was flawed in spots, sure, but I still loved parts of the game. The battle system was still pretty fun. I guess it started as a guilty pleasure game. By the time I completed it, I was satisfied, it didn’t feel like a waste of time.

That was around the time I started to become less strict with my games. =) I tend to find something to like in most games. Sure, sometimes I’m just not in the mood or something, but I try to come back and give it another shot. I think the battle system in Legaia 2 was still fun enough to keep me playing, which is all I needed I suppose. =P

                    • Anime10121

Oh no laughter necessary, I can totally understand how you liked XII (as I said, it was a well built game, just wasnt my cup of tea).

Legaia 2 wasn’t bad, so much as it was a disappointment to me. I LOVED the first game on the original PSX SO MUCH, and when I heard that a sequel had released without me knowing, I immediately went to Ebay and picked it up. But it was just so…mediocre to me, ESPECIALLY when compared to the original. The battle system was cool, (pretty much the same as the original, but the base plot and characters were a no :(

I also didnt like that it was more a reboot than an actual sequel. But yeah to MYSTIC ARS :D

                    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Yeah, I totally understand that. Watching that video, I’m pretty certain it was the battle system that kept me around. =P

        • Anime10121

Crap was harsh I admit, but comparing it to Level 5’s other Jrpg’s such as Dark Cloud, Ni No Kuni, and Rouge Galaxy, which are all top tier JRPG’s, WKC is DEFINITELY on a way lower tier.

          • Pyrofrost

I guess we all have different outlooks. I can definitely say I like Rogue Galaxy and Ni no Kuni more; however, I really felt like I was sent back to the SNES era as far as story telling and character development in WKC goes. I can’t think of a game that has really given me that feeling outside of WKC and The Last Story; since the PSone era.
Those two games managed to capture that JRPG era as good as any JRPG from that time period (speaking with the nostalgia glasses removed). After all, it’s not like JRPGs from that time period were the greatest either.

Back then the plots and character development for almost all of them were only mediocre to a bit better than mediocre. However, at that time we really didn’t have anything setting a standard outside of FFVI and Chrono Trigger. We didn’t start getting an epic level of story telling, character development, and immersion outside of FFVI, till later. I would argue that people who say otherwise about that time period have just never experience actual good writing; as the old days of gaming are almost always seen through rose colored glasses.

As I said though, my experience with WKC was a blast to a JRPG era which seems to be pretty much forgotten. I don’t know why I went off on that rambling, lol; but this was my point :p

            • Budgiecat

WKC did give me that Last Story feel to it (kinda had similar plot points and less Anime clicheness about it), but the downer for me was the MMO style gameplay. I really liked the TGS 2006 trailer they should have kept it to that

              • Anime10121

Yep agree wholeheartedly, the actual game played nothing like that (so it was TGS 06 and not E3 06, makes sense) TGS tech demo. THAT looked awesome, the actual gameplay, eh not so much.

            • LordKaiser

You left Lufia II but yes I agree

              • Pyrofrost

Thank you, how could I have forgotten that. It was only one of my favorite on SNES! :3

            • Anime10121

Hey we all have differing opinions, and dont sweat the ramblings I do it too, its cool bro :P

See, I’m kinda in the same boat with The Last Story, didnt care for it at all. I WANTED to like that considering it was the Gooch and Uematsu, but it just bored me to tears. Liked Lost Odyseey FAR more (though the Last Story’s character designs were superior)…

I’d say Ni No Kuni gave me more an SNES feeling than any other game this gen. Not saying it’s a God tier jrpg or nothing, just saying that it evoked the same feels I got when playing some old school jrpgs…

      • CirnoTheStrongest

I won’t comment about Layton, as I haven’t played too much of their games, but Ni no Kuni was exactly an example of a not so great game from them. It’s better than White Knight for sure, but…I dunno. Rogue Galaxy was amazing though!

That was the last Level 5 game that really felt like it was worth buying.

      • LordKaiser

That “crap” was better than FFXII. Sony din’t supported the game thought.

        • Anime10121

I dont think so, and I didnt even like FFXII (I dont even remember XII’s plot), but I can say that XII was all around a much better experience. I was far more hyped for WKC than I ever was with FFXII (I mean it WAS Level 5’s first next gen release) and was hyped ever since the first tech demo demonstration at E3 20(06?).

I played the game and beat it and felt it was ok back then, but I just recently bought 2 about a year ago, and have still yet to play it for more than 2 hours. Its just extremely hard for me to get into. Love Level 5, I just didnt care for WKC.

    Let’s see…

White Knight Chronicles, Dark Cloud, Ni No Kuni and Layton series are my “What I would like to hear from Level-5” list… Also, an actual western release date for Fantasy Life would be nice too….

    • Budgiecat

How bout a White Knight Chronicles game that actually plays like it was supposed to in TGS 2006 instead of what we got (an MMO clone). Especially since no one cared they canceled the online aspect that went nowhere

      • LordKaiser

It was a good pseudo mmo and I spent 2 years playing . See the vitriol on FB pages, Neoseeker forums, the petition i once linked so Sony and D3 unlocked the disc locked content, The garbage translation that D3 did in the USA version, the hackers that found that all the quests are locked on the disc. I say that many people really cared about the game. The journalists and reviewers don’t, Also there’s a replay to me on rpgamer’s podcast. This game received virtually no support outside of JP.

        • Elvick

I really don’t get why the first was received so poorly. Sure, it’s not the best JRPG ever made, but it was solid. I personally loved it. Though NG+ was terrible. :P

I should probably finish WKC2 sometime. Then again, we didn’t get the story DLC… right?

          • LordKaiser

Nope we don’t got the story centered on your avatar who is a mini-sequel of sorts. Also we didn’t got GR50 Lv.90 and a lot of equipment to bind.

This game was also released without a detailed plan. In JP the website of Sony announced when the content was going to be released and showed you a preview of what you will get. Here in the west we had to guess.

        • Budgiecat

But what was shown looked better than “psuedo MMO”. I don’t know why anyone would want to design “psuedo MMO” anyway. MMO gameplay is what it is due to the limitations that are needed that have to be sacrificed in order to have a working persistent world. Offline RPG’s can take advantage of much more advanced gameplay mechanics without having to held down by those limitations.

          • LordKaiser

Maybe they could not pull it off due to technical limitations. Even Killzone dint turned out to be like the trailers. But yes maybe it would be better if they should make it in to 2 games. WKC with the double techniques a la Chrono Trigger and White Knight Chronicles online with pure online gameplay and on the server saves.

But even so this game was still better than FFXII.

Really wish they would just do Vita/3DS multiplats.

They didn’t really do the Vita any favors with what they did on it. Which was multiplats, or PSP/Vita pairings… that would be ported to 3DS later with more content. -.-

And we’ve gotten fuck all in the west from them on Vita. *sigh*

Meh. Level 5’s output has been underwhelming these last couple years. I’m not expecting anything impressive or fun from this conference. They’ll mostly likely stick to what makes them the big bucks: soulless franchises for children and maybe a Layton title.

    • Zancrow

I hope you don’t mean Ni no Kuni with “soulless franchise for children”.

      • Elvick

I think they mean stuff like Little Battlers and that 3DS game with the white ghost thing… I forget what that one is called. Yokai Watch? I don’t know.

        • Zancrow

Oh, ok, but from what I’ve heard Yokai Watch seems to be quite nice.

          Aimed primary at kids, yes.

But dear god is it fun.

It’s like the people doing the series as a whole knew and wanted to pour a good amount of effort into it to make the fun actually….fun.

          • Elvick

I wasn’t talking about the quality of either, just saying what I think that guy meant. Since both are associated with anime and toys I believe.

  • alangato

Damn I wish they would reveal Dark Cloud 3… but I think they would need Sony to do that.
Come on Sony, Dark Cloud 2 was a gem!!

  • kiri25

As far as I’m aware the only console game that lvl 5 has done that is truly their ip is Ni No Kuni. Dark cloud and wkc are both Sony ip’s and if I’m not mistaken I think rogue galaxy is as well but not sure. Dragon Quest is Square Enix.

Tho with lvl 5 now a publisher with offices in Jp, NA, and EU hopefully we’ll see more lvl 5 gems like ni no kuni on consoles.

    • LordKaiser

Ni no Kuni is really a Love it or Hate it type of game. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and it has to do with the battle system.

      • kiri25

I don’t hear much hate in regards to ni no kuni, but then again the online communities I visit mostly are old school jrpg players, so ni no kuni was a real treat. Especially the return to a world map!! How so loved exploring every little corner instead of clicking town on a map or a set path I can explore off of.
