Coming this fall with original modes and Heihachi.

Namco Bandai announced Soulcalibur II HD Online during its “Future of Fighting Games” panel at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Coming digitally to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall, the upgrade will include every mode from the original game. A trailer showed Tekken fighter Heihachi, who was exclusive to the PS2 version of Soulcalibur II. The Xbox version of the game featured Spawn as an exclusive character, and the GameCube version The Legend of Zelda‘s Link. Link won’t reappear as he is property of Nintendo, but Namco Bandai issued a ‘no comment’ on Spawn’s return.

In related news, it was announced that Soulcalibur lead programmer Masaaki Hoshino has been promoted to the producer of the series.

Sadly no Wii U version with Link. That could actually have gone some way to me buying a Wii U sooner.

    • Sal Romano

Third-party support for Wii U is really terrible right now.

      I hope it gets better.

      • papermario

Its fine for year one but its a dumb decision by namco.

Plenty of reasons to get wii u

        • McPoo

I dunno, as mentioned, third party support is pretty dire, and Nintendo’s own efforts have hardly been inspiring. Yet more NSMB, DLC with Luigi, and 2 mini game collections.

It needs a combination of better first and third party support, along with some changes to the system for it to be worth owning, in my opinion

    • papermario

Id get a wii u anyway for pikmin and wonderful 101

    • LeeHatake93

They could still make one later on, just like with Tekken Tag Tournament 2, they could have special plans for a Wii U edition other than just bringing back Link. TTT2 didn’t release at the Wii U’s launch

  • TetsuyaHikari

Sooo… The future of fighting games is relying on the past? In all seriousness though, this could be a good thing, honestly. I think a lot of people agree that SCII was the most balanced out of all the Soul Calibur titles.

    • Sal Romano

According to the guy live-tweeting the event, there’s another Soulcalibur announcement incoming – likely Lost Swords. Stay tuned. =P

      • Raoni Marques

Today?? I’m eager to see that! Even though last game wasn’t that great, I really liked Patroklos and Z.W.E.I

      • TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, it’s probably that, but I won’t be amazed, honestly. I’ve lost interest in SC, truth be told. I just honestly don’t like the direction it has taken. They’d have to do a serious overhaul for people to take it seriously again.

I know people that do have money matches in SCV, but honestly… The game is looked at as a joke. Nobody really even plays it competitively. Most people are still focused on Marvel, Street Fighter, and Tekken.

EDIT: I suppose BlazBlue should also be thrown in the mix, but the others I mentioned seem to get more attention. BlazBlue/Guilty Gear/Melty Blood/JoJo/etc. have all been played a good bit, but have been considered the redheaded stepchild when compared to the titans of fighting games, unfortunately, heh. That doesn’t mean I’m looking forward to the new Guilty Gear or Under Night In-Birth any less though!

        <3 poverty fighters :3

I think a lot of people were disappointed with SC5 and how it removed a lot of fan favourite characters. At least by going back to an old game they can bring them back without it not making any sense in SC6.

      • TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, people have been disappointed with Soul Calibur since III, lol. I can’t tell you how many people I talk with that say II was the last one they played competitively and the rest have been a joke.

        • OverlordZetta

You kidding me? III was the best one!

          • TetsuyaHikari

Depends on what you consider it being the “best” at, lol. II is the most balanced, so I’d consider that one the best.

      • OverlordZetta

Personally, I didn’t mind how SC5 did that. It felt like it was laying the groundwork for a really amazing sequel – the problem was the game itself was rather lacking, but the whole new world and everything else, I really enjoyed, and I certainly wouldn’t mind if they continued from where they left off rather than rewinding.

  • Claude

Gamecube version was the most popular one. To not do a Wii U version with Link is pretty baffling, especially with Namco working on Smash Bros.

    • Carlos Luis Ayala

Maybe Nintendo said no or maybe they will do a port later
Besides Heihachi wasn’t really an exclusive so it’s easy for them to bring him back as for Spawn they made the ps2 game they might still have the rights but Link is first party he was really the only exclusive.

      • Claude

Somehow, I can’t imagine Nintendo saying no to third party support.

    • LeeHatake93

Maybe they’ll pull Tekken Tag Tournament. Release the PS3 and 360 versions first, and then create a special “Wii U Edition” that gives the Soul characters Nintendo costumes and adds Ganondorf and Shiek to fight alongside Link in the place of Heihachi and Spawn. Just wishful thinking, but it would be awesome

    • TalesOfBS

Why are you questioning that? I always thought that people already
realized that Namco never really supported any Nintendo (and Microsoft) system.
Take a look at all the crap Namco released on Nintendo platforms. With the exception of Tos1/Phantasia/CC/S2 and maybe 1 or 2 more games i forgot, it is all about random crap/incomplete games and shovelware. They didn’t even try to give the systems at least some good ports like they did with the PS1/PS2/PSP and are doing now with the PS3/Vita.

    • HeatPhoenix

Deeeefinitely not the same teams though. The team working with Sakurai is the Gundam Extreme Vs. team which has usually very little to do with other teams except for other Namco Bandai Gundam teams.

  • Carlos Luis Ayala

I hope they bring Spawn to both too.

  • Fantasytales

one of the main reason i liked soul calibur 2 was cause of link so this news doesnt really exite meat all.

  • papermario

Id buy it with link on wii u, now? I will pass

  • LeeHatake93

I may actually get this. Truthfully, and people always say this, I preferred the Gamecube version because of Link, but with this game coming to PS3 and Xbox 360, it could be possible that Heihachi and Spawn can star side-by-side just like Darth Vader and Yoda did in 4 since neither are first-party. I support the idea of a Wii U version too, but since I still have the Gamecube version, I’m less interested and would prefer a 3DS version to be honest.

  • Bob Obb

New producer huh? Guess Namco wasn’t happy with SC5’s sales

    • TetsuyaHikari

I wouldn’t have been happy with them either, lol.

    • rurifan

Let’s hope they reverse direction for subsequent soul calibur games. Pretend SC5 didn’t exist and make a real sequel to SC4! :-D

      • epy

This. Make SCV an alternate timeline or Sophitia’s dream or something. SCV was a disappointment in almost all fronts.

  • Kefkiroth

Definitely picking this up for PS3. 2 is probably the most balanced of SC games. Wonder why they didn’t bring over the GC version to the Wii U though, that could’ve been a decent system-seller.

  • Charlie

One of the best fighting games in HD? Count me in.

  • Sal Romano

Added media. Sorry took so long. Was driving to another state.

  • RighteousHippo

Waaaaay too much nostalgia. I grew up playing this game with my friends. Insta-buy. I’m so damn excited!

  • Syltique

I’ve been waiting, and training for this moment for 10 years! My Talim will finally know true glory. If you guys aren’t ready to bring it, then step aside, because I’m out for blood!

  • PhoenixAutomatic~♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪~

Wow, This is pure win. To see a game I spent hours challenging my bros, Surely I’m going to get this!

  • Gilgamesh2025

No Wii (U) ≙ No Link, no buy! Sorry, Namdai!

    • AnimusVox

I am curious why hey didnt or aren’t bringing it to the WiiU. I don’t see why they shouldn’t.

      • Gilgamesh2025

Maybe the developers are afraid that SC II HD on Wii U won’t sell well because of the dissatisfying sales of the platform.

  • Zero

I have really fond memories of playing this on GameCube. It just might be my favorite entry in the series.

Those fond memories do make me question not having this on the Wii U. Why not? What’s there to lose? It’s not like the budget here is through the roof or anything.

I still have this from my original purchase of SoulCalibur II. It’s always been sealed. It’s gotten a little dusty sitting on my shelf. ^^

  • GhostNomad

It’s almost like they read my mind when I posted on the previous SoulCalibur article! Now all we need is an HD release of 3 as well for Chronicles of the Sword, and I’m all squared away on my SC needs!

  • AnimusVox

Yay I get to play Yunsung again <3

    • TetsuyaHikari

      It has been too long.

      • AnimusVox

I know he was in IV but I just loved 2 so much. I was so disappointed with V.

        • TetsuyaHikari

Oh, derp. Right, I was thinking of Hwang, sorry, lol.

          • AnimusVox

Haha I loved Hwang too though so it’s ok. That would be an awesome unlockable that isn’t the assassin.

  • Elvick

I enjoy HD remakes, but for some reason I just don’t care with fighting games. *shrug*

    Good for the fans though.

  • Solomon_Kano

Man, I really hope they get Spawn in. I loved using him when I played at my friends house, since he had an Xbox (I had it for PS2). If he does get in though, I wonder if they’ll keep the exclusivity like it was originally, or if we’ll get one version with both characters?

  • xMCXx

    Really? SC2 HD?
I prefer SC3 over this. It still looks gorgeous and the sheer content makes it the best SC IMHO.

  • SolarisSpell

I may be a minority here, but what I enjoy most in a fighting game is Story Mode. I have fun with SC2, but then I discovered SC3 and it blew my mind. It’s story mode and character creation was amazing to me. Having different battle style to my character (instead of only mimicking existing characters) and even that optional Lv99 battle made me love that mode.

I’d hope more fighting game would pay attention to the story mode. Secret conditions for unlocking new charaters would also be nice. I find it enjoyable and satisfying. :)

    • OverlordZetta

Agreed 100%. 3 will forever remain my favorite in the series.

    • xMCXx

      Amen, brother! ;)

  • Rafael Martines

I never played the first 2 Soul Caliburs, I woul try this one… if is fun like the Soul Calibur III I’m ok

    • Kurisu Makise

I can definitely stand up for SC2 and say it was quite fun. I mostly played the Gamecube version though =( I’ll miss Link but otherwise I’m excited.

  • artemisthemp

So this game will have a offline mode?

    • KingNigma

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be just like the original but with online capabilities instead of being a strictly online game.

  • King-Podigy-X

    The HD collection are helpful.

  • miyamoto

    No wii U? ….too bad :-(
