"Every person can be a creator," says Xbox corporate VP.

Following earlier reports, Microsoft has confirmed self-publishing for Xbox One.

“Our vision is that every person can be a creator,” said Xbox corporate VP Marc Whitten. “That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August.”

Speaking with Polygon, Whitten added that self-publishing and Xbox One dev kit functionality won’t be available at launch, but will be added at a later date.

Gamescom runs from August 21 to 25.

With some added meat to the discussion too. I would add “I’m glad that Microsoft is re-evaluating previous decisions and working to make their product the one that people want to have in their living rooms. Thankfully I was able to say this before the whole hate train came running through.”

      • McPoo

That’s a bit long winded. Studies have shown that most people online wont ready more than 7 words of any post on a forum or message board.

Makes this post a bit pointless, I guess.

        • BossTuff

It was so pointless that I read through it. I guess my attention span is not as short as it used to be. Curses!

    • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

Well I sure as hell am not going to support a company that is doing this out of blatant necessity, rather than good faith or clear vision. Just like with the rest of their DRM garbage and the backpedaling that followed it.

  • shogunknight

It seems like microsoft is the ‘two face’ of this generation. 1st 6 months, crazy people and the next 6 months, saints

    • Tac-Mex

Yeah, you can’t trust them at this point

      • KnifeAndFork

        *flips a coin*

        • shogunknight

Haha exactly, who knows whats next? good or bad

  • Tac-Mex

Good news but still i am getting a PlayStation 4

    • Warboss Aohd

same, will get Xbox One later though.

not limitin’ meself ta one console.

  • 罪罰

The idea of owning the console and being able to turn it into a developer kit is a really neat idea, props to Microsoft for stepping their game up. Regardless I ain’t buying the Xbone so at least It would be great if Sony did the same for the PS4.

    • Peacenutman

Where have you been all these time? Sony confirmed self publishing on ps4 months ago, even before e3.

      • 罪罰

I’m talking about being able to turn the retail console into a developer kit.

    • bloodiOS

Absolutely. People can hate Microsoft all they want but a good idea is a good idea, and this is one that Sony should definitely adopt.

Too late at this point, many gamers like me don’t care about Xbox much anymore. Then again i’ve never really cared about Xbox since the first one came out.

    • BossTuff

I would say that the “gamers” like you, that never really cared about the xbox in the first place, wouldn’t be interested in this at all. So it makes sense that you think it’s too late, since there never really was a chance anyway.

I feel that if you classify yourself as a gamer you should be open to games on all platforms.

      • Warboss Aohd

hi reasonable individual, let us have tea.

        • Raoni Marques

Hi reasonable individuals, let us make a party.

          • BossTuff

It shall be the most epic of parties, within reason.

            • Raoni Marques

And after a long journey, we’ll be crowned heroes among the open-minded gamers.

  • adhesive

Microsoft is a sure contender for the reverse Tour De France with all the backpedaling they’re doing.

    • Charlottes Guardian

This. This one is my favorite. I lol’d.

  • Marco Tinè

    Great news for indies!

  • Martian Wong

“Our vision is that every person can be a creator,” That is not how they are couple months back…M$ were looking for deep shit if they kept their old business model~

“self-publishing and Xbox One dev kit functionality won’t be available at launch”

Translation: We seriously just decided this like yesterday.

  • Kurisu Makise

Microsoft continuing to play catch-up and the consoles haven’t even been released yet, geez. Well, better late now than never or during Year 2/3.

    • miyamoto

another M$ flip flopping Xposed 180

      • Kurisu Makise

        Ahaha, that word, well said.

  • new_tradition

I guess this could go hand in hand with the decision to give that game making software Project Sparks for free?

If I’m an small dev, like SMALL DEV like Christine Love-like dev, how do I publish my games on PS4 or Xbone? Do I need a dev kit? Will a PC engine I’m used to work on both consoles? How much will Sony and M$ cut from my sale? Will the self-publishing work like those of the Google Play Store?

    • Elvick

You do need a devkit for PS4, and to be certified by Sony/MS/Nintendo to actually release something. Depends on the engine. That information is under NDAs, so we don’t really know how big of a cut they get from each sale.

Tweet if you want to try and get on PlayStation.

  • LordKaiser

“Our vision is that every person can be a creator” Is more like:

Our vision is that the Xbox one will become a PS4 with Kinect.

“If you can’t beat them then copy them!”

  • Raiu

Kinda too late for that, Microsoft…

  • DjangoRaijin

I don’t even know what to think of this company anymore. This is the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever seen. They’ve taken back every single policy they’ve had and reversed them. I’m not buying an Xbone for sure now although I do hope Sony does the development kit thing. If they don’t oh well because I’m certainly not supporting Microsoft again after this little fiasco.

    • McPoo

You sound like the sort of customer that can’t be pleased.

“lol no devs M$ ARE MONSTERS!”

      “lol devs allowed f u M$ u sux”

  • Elvick

Good for developers, but I hope that no indies are naive enough to go MS first. MS was only forced into providing this, they would have been perfectly happy staying with their own policies if they could have gotten away with them.

Indies should reward Sony and Nintendo for not being douches.

  • Bob Obb

MS playing “me too” all of a sudden lmao

    • artemisthemp

They still don’t sell Camera as Accessory :P
