New tidbits confirmed in PlayStation Access video.

PlayStation 4 will support party chat, Sony confirmed in a new PlayStation Access video.

The PlayStation Network friends list will cap at 2,000 people.

The clip also confirms party chat, services like Netflix, and free-to-play games will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription. General online gaming, however, will.

PlayStation 4 is set to launch this holiday.

Now it’s confirmed. Nice! Party and cross game chat is the only thing I missed about getting rid of my xbox back on 09. It has been a long time in the coming, but it’s finally going to be here.

No longer using Vitas as walkie-talkies to play with friends playing different games hahaha!

    • G.

It was confirmed from the initial PS4 reveal. ;/

      • Yuri4prez

Of course, but you never know what will happen until it’s in our hands and we are using it. More confirmation is only better.
I didn’t doubt it was coming when they mentioned it at ps4 reveal, but mentioning it again just makes me happy.

  • Elvick

I want to change my username. D: (more a general PSN thing than PS4)

    • Sal Romano

I, too, would enjoy this feature.

Try asking @yosp about it on Twitter. Maybe he’ll respond.

      • oddvintagetaco

he responded to me, something I already knew tho…

If all none PS Eye games are Remote Playable, then the PSVITA should be able to be a controller for all those games! The inputs are all ready set! All you need to do is keep the display on the TV, and remote play but with no screeen.

Thats what I WANTED to type on twitter but had no room.

    • Yuri4prez

You know, I have quite a few friends who always say they wish they could change profile names. you would think this would be something Sony would adress if so many people would want it to happen.

Maybe since PS+ is a paid service, Sony will work on making customers happy by giving them features such as this.

I have seen many people on forums saying they would even pay to change profile names( like MS did).
I don’t think this would be very hard to implement.

    • drproton

Ideally for me it would work like Steam, where your username and profile name are different.

But it already seems like Sony is pushing using your real name instead of the PSN ID

    • Zero

I would enjoy this feature. I also want the ability to remove certain games from my trophy list.

I’ve had friends start playing random games on my account before. It sucks because I’m stuck with one or two trophies for a game I never played. Annoying! =/

  • bldudas

I still see no need for party chat. I don’t want to be distracted when playing a different game. And to me this just takes up more space that could be used to make games better.

    • VaultBreaker

Takes up more space? Xbox 360 can do it without a problem. It is an important feature actually, the next gen seems like leaning toward blending single player and multiplayer experience.Games that shown at e3 seems to proved that Next gen MMO would be quite remarkable.

    • Guest

Now don’t get me wrong it’s not a dealbreaker feature of course, but it would be nice to have it

    • Solomon_Kano

How does this take away from making better games? It’s been a thing this entire gen, with 360 games no worse for wear. If you don’t plan to use it that’s one thing, but it certainly doesn’t take anything away from the potential quality of games.

    • Yuri4prez

It does make games better. Let me give you an example. The coop chat in Hunted: Demon Forge is HORRIBLE! you can’t hear the other player a lot of time, you can’t say or hear anything during loading screen, you have to have your mic turned on BEFORE starting up the game, etc.
With private/party chat, you don’t rely on the game to talk to coop or team members.
It’s a million times better than the current system we have been using, and IMO, once you get to use it, you will be amazed at how useful it actually is, in-game and out.

    • Simmsville

It’s people like you who have clearly never used party chat.
It’s a god send. Not just for tactics within a certain game when you and your friends are playing it, but on those occasions where your friends are playing one thing, you are playing something different, and you just want to chat with them about everyday things while you play a game.

It’s not that distracting unless you solely play single player RPG’s.
Sometimes, on certain games where you’re doing a bit of grinding, talking with a friend can actually help you pass the time a bit quicker

  • Bob Obb

    Only 2000 friends?

  • LastBoss

2000 friends, with 1999 red luft balloons?!!!!

  • shogunknight

2000? I aint buying this console.. I have 2000 and 1 Friends. Seriously, does anyone have that much?

    • GhostNomad

I’ve never even hit PSN’s current cap (100 or so?) because the only people I add are ones I’m actually friends with in person, or we just chat a lot. Hell, the only time I added a bunch of people was when I tried that Toro’s Friend Network thing on Vita and then quit when I got to 50 friends, cleared my list back to the 30 or so people I actually know. 2000 is just…. Ridiculous, but with the whole Social Networking having a bigger role in the next gen, not surprising.

    • DesmaX

Well, to be honest, I do seems to delete friends on my list quite frequently, so this is pretty helpful for me

  • Pyrofrost

@Sal: I see that it addresses ftp games will not require ps+ but general games will. Are you able to find out about Final Fantasy XIV? I know gold wasn’t requred for FFXI on xbl, but I am curious about how Sony will handle FFXIV.

Not that needing it will be a deal breaker, just curious. Thanks in advance.

    • icup ✔️

XIV is not a FTP game. You won’t need ps+ considering you’ll be playing monthly or seasonally for it. To charge you for both subscriptions is a bit much.

      • Pyrofrost

I agree, I just don’t recall having ever seen anything official on it. Which is why I ask.

I already have PS+ anyway, but I have several friends who don’t have it. So I was just seeking some official confirmation on that.

        • icup ✔️

I believe this is the closest thing I’ve found relating to MMOs.

          “In an interview with Polygon,
SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that this would be
the case before revealing that Sony Online Entertainment has already
decided its MMOs won’t require players to have a PS Plus subscription.” -IGN

          • Pyrofrost

That would definitely cover things like DCUO or Everquest. Hopefully FFXIV will be fit into that.

    • Sal Romano

I believe Sony’s already said online play will be free for online games like FF14 and The Elder Scrolls Online. Lemme see if I can find a link.

Edit: Nevermind, I’m wrong. You’ll need Plus.

      • Pyrofrost

Thank you very much Sal, I really do appreciate it. ^^

EDIT: Thank you very much for getting to the bottom of this.

      • Pyrofrost

I just thought about it. Since you got official word, you may want to update the article with that information.

        • Zero

I’m still not sold on that. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony made a few exceptions, or worked out special deals, for MMORPGs and such.

          • oddvintagetaco

            Insider Tip.

            “Will DriveClub have dedicated servers?”

So doesnt that mean that PS+ online games will have dedicated servers? No one has paid attention on this interview.

            • Zero

It might be different for third party games.

          • Pyrofrost

If it is, it won’t be a deal breaker for me, but it may be for some. I guess we will find out more when that time comes.

  • Solomon_Kano

I lol’d when she pulled out a PS3 for “How big is the PS4”.

  • AnimusVox

Ahhh yiss party chat. As much as I love Sony I think MS had the advantage on that part with 360.

    • Keegs79

the advantage was party chat. What gives them the advantage still? To me personally I see them as equal. Those who don’t want Playstation Plus can still take advantage of Netflix, Hulu Plus, and such.

      • Simmsville

The advantage was VOIP party chat. Which is still much easier and quicker than typing out a message in-game

        • Keegs79

You don’t have to do that with the PS4 or even with the Vita. You can talk to someone doing anything as you do on the 360.

  • Zackasaur

Awesome! I’m really excited for the social aspects of the PS4. I primarily play single-player games, but I like to do that in a social way.

    • kuusou yume

I like the social features as well. Like the one on the Wii U was cool with the drawing function.

  • jonsonicu64

    your move xbox1

  • Learii

do I only need ps plus to play online or I also need to pay $5 with ps plus to play online?

    • Zackasaur

      You only need PS+.

      • Learii

        ok thx

  • Gilgamesh2025

    PS4 won’t support Dual Shock 3? Boo …

  • Simmsville

The ‘party chat’ is all text based? Oh man that’s a fail.
Where the hell is VOIP Sony?
