Good to see Phoenix Wright did well. Also Dragon’s Crown’s sales were nice considering this is Vanillaware.

  • ghostbooster

wow vanillaware lost some series money

the game budget is 1 million and they only sold 184.000 total(psvita+ps3)

    • Pang Chee Jie

Games don’t just vanish into thin air after a week.

      • ghostbooster

yeah true but their no way they will get 1 million unit sold
and the sales on (europe+usa) will be give to the publisher on that specific region vanillware won’t get any money and that sad because i love that company

        • Tarkovsky

You do realize that 1 unit doesn’t = 1 dollar right. They make approx 20-25 dollars off a unit. Which means that they have already made back the money.
Edit: Oh and I forgot to mention, Vanillaware have already earned their money, it’s Atlus who needs to recoup the money, which they have already done with 180k copies sold.

        • Altin

1 Million Dollar Budget =/= 1 Million sold units (unless they are sold at a 1$/copy)

    • sherimae1324

you clearly have no idea whats business is?

      • ghostbooster

        what ?

    • usagi_san

You know this is for physical copies, right? Who knows how much they made from downloads?

Edit: These are good numbers for a first week – especially for the Vita.

    • z_merquise

This is just the first week.

It’s early to give sudden conclusion. And besides, more than 100k copies sold just for the PS3 version is already good in Japan.

    • Sal Romano

Multiply each sale (abut 175,500) by about $83. Or somewhere around there. The game costs 8,190 yen, but I’m not sure how much retailers purchase them for. I’ve heard that retailers in the US like GameStop barely turn a profit from selling new games, so let’s go by $80, which would mean Atlus / VanillaWare earned over $14 million.

And the game has still to launch in North America and Europe.

      Where’s the loss? =P

      • ghostbooster

oh thanks man you made me happy i taught they lost money

      • ECM

There is this thing called a “development budget”, “marketing”, and “distribution”, which you might be surprised to learn cost a lot of money.

So, yeah, Atlus, may have generated 14-million in *revenue* for various parties, but the salient question is “how much did Atlus *profit*?”

(Games do not spring, fully-formed, from Zeus’ brow, lest I’m not being clear enough.)

        • Sal Romano

          This is truth.

As far as dev budget goes, we don’t know what it is, exactly, but considering this is the first VanillaWare game to go over the million dollar development budget, I can’t imagine it’s too far past that.

But yeah, I didn’t consider marketing and distribution.

          • Pyrofrost

When it comes to tallying up a games budget: marketing, packaging, distribution, extras, R&D, labor, time, and etc; are all taken into account together.
This is how any company comes up with a total budget to do something. If a company says that its budget went over 1m dollars in cost (for Vanillaware, likely just over a mil.), then that is the total for all aspects…down to the ink used to color the facing of the disc.

Don’t let people on the internet using big words get to you mate.

        • Keegs79

Marketing budget was likely very small if at all. I don’t recall ads and Atlus rarely markets there games much. They don’t blow wads of cash like Activision and EA on ads.

  • z_merquise

    Go, Vanillaware!

So happy to see Dragon’s Crown selling with huge number for both Vita and PS3. Hope to see this continue in the coming weeks. Vanillaware really deserve this.

  • Sieghardt

Great numbers for Phoenix and Dragons, well deserved :D Hope those witch & 100 cavalrymen sales are ok for N1

  • DesmaX

oooh, nice for Hundred Knights (It almost sold as much as Disgaea D2). I was hoping that one would do well for them…

But maybe it wasn’t a good idea to release it together with Dragon’s Crown. That one really sold well, congrats for them

    • Arcana Gear

Yeah this week japan had to many good games competing with each other, but finnaly NIS escaped of the disgaea limbo(every non disgaea game failed to sell the expectations)

  • TheExile285

170k for Dragons Crown. I was hoping a bit higher but still good!

    • Duc PC-QB

If you look into those ridiculous price then the sales is high enough.

  • shogunknight

The Witch and the Hundred Knights tried so hard but failed to take on the Dragons Crown, alas this weeks golden throne was taken by the wrightful power of the Phoenix reborn from the ashes: Ace attorney
All consoles did considerably good this week, Mind-0 isnt out?

    • Dede Ogbe

      Mind-0 comes out August 1

  • MrKappa

250k for PW in the first week? That is really amazing but sadly I don’t think it will do that well in NA… especially since it is DD only.

Dragon’s Crown 100k and even 70k on the Vita is also amazing. Well deserved for VW.

Then there is NISA getting the same low sales they always do.

    • linkenski

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Digital Download. I still think it might do better than past titles since a lot of users are already checking in on the eShop regularily.

  • Dede Ogbe

Looks like Xblaze did pretty poorly.

  • PrinceHeir

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and Dragon’s Crown!!

congrats! will be getting Dragon’s Crown next week and Phoenix Wright next year!

i’m not sure what happened to The Witch and the Hundred Knights.

it seems NIS barely posted any trailers then boom it was just released out of nowhere.

hopefully NIS America does a better job on marketing this.

can’t wait for Dragon’s Crown and Tales of Xillia next week!

    also Killer is Dead!

  • TetsuyaHikari

I’m curious to see how many copies of Killer is Dead and Mind-0 will sell. I’m guessing at around 35k for Mind-0 and 125k or so for Killer is Dead.

    • PrinceHeir

well Lollipop Chainsaw shipped 100k in japan

i wonder if Killer is Dead will ship around 150k, especially the marketing they have put

      • TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, I was basically giving KID a bit of a boost over LC because it has Killer7 elements backing it which would lead to more sales over LC, I think. Plus, I think they also did a better job advertising this game than LC.

I don’t recall seeing near as many gameplay trailers for LC before it came out. I could see them reaching 150k, but that’s still quite the stretch for the first week, which is why I’m guessing more around 125k.

EDIT: Also, I’m being generous towards Mind-0, lol. It wouldn’t surprise me if it barely broke 20k, honestly. There were still plenty of first prints for sale on multiple sites I visited.

        • Dede Ogbe

Bear in mind, Mind-0 only came out today.

          • TetsuyaHikari

Bear in mind, Killer is Dead only came out today.

Do you even know how media create sales work? We’ll find out the results later ._.

            • Dede Ogbe

that’s my point. I was mentioning that fact as u said there were plenty of first print sales still available. Am been following this site for a while now so am not stupid or oblivious to how this works dude. Though that being said, am only trying to be optimistic about the game but it’s doubtful it will sell well

              • TetsuyaHikari

My only point was… If you have plenty of first prints still available, that means there haven’t been enough orders placed to even breach into your normal packages (the ones without the bonuses :P). That doesn’t say much about how sales are going. So yeah, even though it just came out today… There is such a thing as “pre-ordering” and that can be a good indicator of how well it will do in the first week X3

                • Dede Ogbe

hmm yh good point. Like i said i was trying to be optimistic. But from the moment they released the first screens i was doubtful. fact is this clearly isn’t even a game that was developed for the vita, and if it was it’s only using a fraction of it’s power. It’s blatantly a psp game that arrived too late in the console cycle and was forced to shift to the vita. The concept is interesting, execution…alot to be desired. Hopefully it sells so they could make a sequel that was actually developed from the ground up as a vita game.

        • PrinceHeir

          hopefully they can reach 150k!!

funny how RE6 sold 4 million copies and its still a failure, while games like this having around 100k+ is already a huge success.

          take notes companies!
