All three of Grand Theft Auto V‘s main characters won’t be playable from the start, Rockstar has told OXM UK.
“We want to give the player the opportunity to get to know the three characters individually, and explore the world as each of them, and it would not have been possible if all three had been available from the start,” Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies said.
Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto games, Michael, Franklin, and Trevor aren’t new to the city. The game will have “very intense missions from the start” and offer a “much faster” pace than any of its predecessors.
“They already have contacts, they are integrated with the world and lead a busy life – these characteristics should give players a sense of immediate and total immersion,” Benzies added.
Grand Theft Auto V is the first game in the series to offer a story centered around three playable characters. According to Benzies, Grand Theft Auto V needs all three because “one character alone could not manage all the activities and tasks we wanted to establish.”
Grand Theft Auto V launches for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17.
