Free hairstyles, armor, and a $2 map pack.

Atlus has detailed launch download content for Shin Megami Tensei IV, due out for 3DS in North America on July 16.

Downloadable content available at launch includes:

  • Three custom looks will be available for the protagonist to alter his look by changing hairstyles. These DLC items will be permanently free for anyone to download.
  • In addition to fighting in style, there will be a beneficial armor item free for the first month. The Platinum Surcoat Set offers a little bonus to stats in the early stages of the game, and will help players new to the franchise keep the upper hand. The armor will be available for free for the first month after SMT IV’s launch on July 16. After the first month, the price of the armor set will revert to $1 permanently.
  • There will also be a map pack available at launch to help players gain more experience. Suitable for the early stages of the game, the new maps will help players gain extra experience to boost their characters with enemies and a collectible demon exclusive to the DLC. The map pack will be $2 at launch.

Additional download content will be revealed closer to launch.

In other news, Shin Megami Tensei IV will be playable at E3 next week. Lead character artist Masayuki Doi will be signing limited edition posters on Wednesday June 12 from 3 to 4 p.m.

DLC for Shin Megami Tensei… Never thought I would see the day…
Welcome to modern gaming! It seems as though no game can truly stay offline anymore. Want free stuffs, free game? Let’s stay connected to the internet!

Can’t help but feel that one day, I’ll wake up and find something like:
“Want free oxygen? No problem! Just stay connected to the internet.”
And it’ll all be accepted as the norm of the society.

I know what you mean, eventually you’ll have to have your console connected every 24 hours or you can’t play your games. Thankfully that won’t be happening any time soon.

      • Tetsu

Oh wait, nah that did happen, something One. I heard about it recently.

        • Nice Boat

Rule 1 of Disqus: Console ONE is never mentioned
Rule 2; Emm,,,, Respect the rules!

    • PrinceHeir

i don’t mind this, but yeah not feeling good about this.

also the special bonus pre order costumes.

will they put that too on eshop, or are they exclusive forever?

and lol expect Persona 5 will have the same thing as well :P

  • new_tradition

Okay, not a bad selection. Probably won’t get the map, but free hair styles are nice. I pre-ordered the game, so I guess I could basically count that samurai alt. costume as a freebie, along with the location specific pre-order DLC costume (mine’s Amazon, so the delivery packaging costume, lol)

I do like the idea of the Amazon outfit. If I could have ordered from there I would have done, just for that. ;)

      • new_tradition

If it wasn’t for the obnoxious logo, the US GameStop outfit would’ve been my fave. It’s so glittery and pretty, lol.

But yeah, I definitely think Amazon was the lesser of two evils xD

    Meanwhile, in Europe…

    • Farid Belkacemi

Well, at least it’s coming :)

  • jeb

And people thought this shit is only for AAA pubs, I still remember when Atlus was used as the prime example of “the true great publishers” that would never do this.

  • HeatPhoenix

Bah, I wonder what demon that’ll be.

  • Eclipse

I never was a fan of DLC, but that map pack sounds rather tempting… I don’t have a whole lot of time to spend grinding for countless hours because of studies, so I could see it being very useful.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Look a better map pack then the COD map packs. I mean no offense but gotta be honest about it.

  • $30632660

All the people who damage control for DLC talking about how it’s a good thing because it can expand games and blah blah blah are nothing but idiots. You’re part of the reason gaming is going down the gutter, fuck all of you that buy DLC, I don’t care if it’s just weapon skins or some 5 hour bull shit like Deus Ex’s Missing Link or any other story crap like FFXIII has.

    • Farid Belkacemi

To be fair, The Missing Link was totally worth it. Not so sure about FF XIII-2 DLC (didn’t buy it).

      • new_tradition

I’d argue for the Requiem of the Goddess DLC. It was a pretty good boss fight, and you could get “Valkyrie” Lightning as a Commando monster party member. Of course the narrative in the DLC was so important that I’d argue it should’ve been in the core game in the first place, so yeah, I have mixed feelings about it to say the least >_>

    • MosquitoLemon

      Bad day at work?

    • HeatPhoenix

Pretty much. I’m really miffed at DLC, also because what if I buy the game second hand when we’re already at the 4DS and the PS5 and the servers are A not up anymore and B I just don’t want to spend 20 bucks extra to get the full game.

I just picked up Custom Robo Arena and AA: Trials and Tribulations in shrinkwrap (somehow for a really good price) but if it were any of these games with DLC I would be subject to both A and B.

Besides, I don’t do digital distribution anyway, I like actually owning what I pay for.

  • Nice Boat

The second one will help with the Nintendo Hard difficulty

  • kuusou yume

I really can’t wait for this OMG. I’m glad my pre-order (and all pre-orders) were bumped up the the CE bundle. That was a pleasant surprise.

  • dior

Don’t have a problem with the DLC outfits but the EXP and Macca ones are basically cheat codes lol. Japanese players have reached max level in less than two hours using the EXP one.
