Go past the initial 500 gigabytes.

PlayStation 4 will come equipped with a 500 gigabyte hard-drive. But you’re not limited to it.

“Yes, PS4’s HDD is upgradable like PS3,” Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed on Twitter.

PlayStation 4 is due out this holiday.

I thought it might come with an SSD instead of an HDD, I guess its the price that made them pick what they did.

can always put a ssd in if u want u can put a ssd in a ps3 if u want why not a ps4?

      • DrForbidden

PS3 can’t make good use of SSDs as it was never designed for SSDs in the first place. Too many operating and speed bottlenecks. The only real improvement you will see in a PS3 is the lack of seek time, which will only shave a couple of seconds of floading times on average for most games.

    • DrForbidden

No doubt. An SSD of equivalent capacity would push the price point up by at least USD300.
Still, I hope the PS4 at least comes better equipped for eventual SSD upgrading than the PS3. TRIM support and SATA III anyone? :)

      • AdamBoy64

        Man, that would fly.
Would be a nice investment for the PS4.

  • bldudas

500 GB should be more than enough for me, but for people who want to upgrade, that’s a good thing.

  • Raiyu

Good, cause games are only going to get bigger…though I don’t think I’ll even use all the space.

  • sll1cool1m

I guess it’s pretty decent. Considering that you will have extra space through cloud technology.

  • Elvick

Wonder if we can also use external harddrives too. Xbox One does that.

This is nice, but I dislike needing to fiddle with this. Would be more comfortable with just slapping an external harddrive in a USB port. :P

Honestly, unless installs are mandatory I don’t see why most users would need more than 500gb in the first place.

    • xMCXx

And even then it’s enough for like a hundred games.

    • Syltique

PS+ filled up my 500 GB HDD on PS3 and I’ve only had it for a year. I have over 40 free games.

PS4 games are going to be up to 40 GB+. This isn’t even counting all the PSN digital only titles. They already said PS+ is getting Drive Club for free, and that game must be huge.

      • eagles89

Drive Club PS+ Edition is only a beta of it. Source from GameStop manager.

  • bloodiOS

I’ll upgrade it with my 750GB Momentus XT ($99.99 on Amazon right now.) It performs very well on the PS3, so no doubt it’ll be even better on the PS4.

  • Kurisu Makise

Upgradeable hard drive is the way to go honestly, PS+ members alone will probably finish that 500GB fairly quickly. I myself also like to load games off the HDD more than use the disc (instead like a collector, I just like having the shiny case around and even that’s fading away personally) but with games being 25GB in some cases, I’ll be looking into a 1-2TB option to install Day 1 instead.

  • Raiu

Since we gonna need PS+ to play online multiplayer, this is a godsend with all those freebies waiting to be left alone in our HDD… Which we may or may not have the time to finish all of them….

    • kuusou yume

Are they even going to run on the PS4?

      • Raiu

        You mean PS3 games? Nope…

But after a year or so after release, it will be filled with PS4 games…

  • Demolish

    hi guys,

im from qatar from arabic but i wonder holiday mean is coming in dec or nov ?
edit:i hope someone answer my question :)

    • MrSirFeatherFang

well black friday (a kind of sales day in the US) is in Nov, (right after thanksgiving) so I’m assuming at the least Nov. People usually start their “holiday” shopping during Nov or starting black friday.
That’s usually when big games come out too. Not sure if everything is correct, but that’s as far as I know.

      • Demolish

ow thank u so so so much, but what about uk it’s same like US or..?

        • MogCakes

          Should be the same, yes.

  • TetsuyaHikari

It’s honestly hard to see myself using up all of this space. I haven’t even used up all my space on my 120 GB HDD. I just delete game data from my HDD after I’m finished playing the game, so that saves some space. However, it is nice to know that SHOULD I decide to upgrade, I can :3

    • kuusou yume

Me too. I replaced my 60GB with 320GB and i still have more than half left. Yeah, it’s nice to have the option open and easy. Hopefully they stick to standard 2.5″ HDD’s

  • LordKaiser

If it’s a SATA 3 interface then you can put a Solid State Drive there. That’s cool!

    • artemisthemp

It will be SATA interface, since no one there right mind will go with IDE/PATA, but which version is a good question.
However I can’t see Sony not putting 3 in

      • LordKaiser

Unless they get cheap ad place SATA 2 on it but I hope it’s SATA 3 6GB.
