30 first-party PlayStation 4 games in development.

PlayStation 4 will launch this holiday season for $399 / 399 euros / 349 pounds, Sony announced during its E3 press conference.

Confirmed first-party launch titles include DriveClub, Knack, and Killzone: Shadow Fall. inFAMOUS: Second Son will follow in Q1 2014.

There are currently over 30 PlayStation 4 exclusive games in development at Sony’s Worldwide Studios, with 20 set to launch during the first year, and 12 of which are completely new IPs.

PlayStation Plus memberships from PlayStation 3 and PS Vita will carry over to PlayStation 4. PlayStation Plus benefits include:

  • Online multiplayer access (yes, you have to pay for multiplayer)
  • Exclusive discounts
  • Cloud game saves
  • Instant Game Collection

To celebrate the launch of PlayStation Plus on PlayStation 4, “DriveClub PS Plus Edition” will be offered free as an Instant Game Collection title.

Sony Pictures is also working on new original programming and unique access to entertainment content for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Network.

And finally, Gaikai streaming will come to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in 2014 in the U.S., granting console owners access to a limited library of PlayStation 3 games. And that streaming functionality will also come to PS Vita somewhere down the road.

    woot Day 1 PS4 :D

  • Locksus

Thank you Sony! I have to get this early next year then!

  • PrinceHeir

fuck i might get this Day 1!!!!!!

  • KIngpigeon96

Sony sealed the deal with this. Flawless victory.

  • Finalshoryuken

    Getting it!

  • Sevyne

    Game, Set, Match.

it’s embarrassing how EASILY Sony just manhandled Microsoft.

  • kuusou yume

The good news just doesn’t stop! refreshing online stores until i pre-order mine

  • Bob Obb

$100 cheaper than Xbone, no bullshit DRM, smaller size AND better specs? This is hilarious, there’s not even a choice next-gen.

    • SpectralRaiden

  • TeaYou

sony just destroyed microsoft at e3, better lineup, better price, better everything

  • Derpazu

    Buhbye, MS.

  • TeaYou

microsoft should be shooting themselves atm

  • MrRobbyM

Wat. Literally. Wat? I knew it was gonna be better than the Xbox One but $100 cheaper? What the hell? Sony has to be losing money on it.

    • MosquitoLemon

Sony has always lost money on their consoles. In fact I think historically, Nintendo is the only one to make money or break even on a console at launch.

      • MrRobbyM

I mean, I know that much but Sony has to be losing a pretty good amount here.

Anyways, isn’t Ninty actually losing money on the Wii U?

        • MosquitoLemon

Could be, but I don’t think so. Everyone keeps complaining about how WiiU is old tech, so I don’t know how they would be.

edit – re: sony losing a lot, remember that for the PS3 they lost most of their money setting up factories to manufacture their own components. It’s probably paying back now.

        • Bryce Blalex Douglas

The fact that the components in the PS4 are pretty much PC components they’re probably not as expensive as the PS3 components.

  • DarthNemesis

    Called it

  • Gigus

I still have two questions. (Feel free to answer them for me).

    1. How big is the hard drive in the system?

    2. Is online multiplayer free for non ps+ members?

    • Irp4n

Correct me if I’m wrong. From what I saw, it looks like multiplayer online will be ps+ only for PS4, because I saw that as one of some features of ps+ along with IGC, cloud saving, etc.

No idea about the hdd. though. 500gb maybe?

      • Michael Garling

Online multiplayer is confirmed as something for PS+ members.

      • Gigus

Thats alittle disappointing :/. I was hoping that online multiplayer would’ve been free.

        • Learii

          me too

          • Gigus

I guess its ok, since they have given a lot of free content already for current ps3 users. I’m also curious to know if access to third party stuff would be free like hulu, netflix, and crunchy roll. I don’t want another Xbox live mishap were you have to pay for live just to access an a subscriptions service you already paid for. If anything. I’ll just wait for ps4 bundle or a price drop. Like I did this current gen.

      • DrForbidden

I would suspect that the HDD would also be upgradeable, like the PS3, so storage may not be an issue at all.

    • $18114340
    • futuristic_imagination

      1. According to the spec sheet its 500gb (link above from sony), that’s a lot of space, I barely filled up my ps3 120gb hd.

      2. From what i read (other comments) the multiplayer is not free for non ps+ / I think that Sony would need to clarify this info.

      • bloodiOS

I’ll swapping that stock HDD with a Momentus XT the moment I got that PS4.

  • King-Prodigy-X

PS4 wins this generation by default. I wonder what M$ employees and CEO’s faces look like

    • Ritsujun

I bet some of the female employees were probably crying.

  • Derpazu

Did I miss any region-lock/free mention or didn’t thy say anything about it?

    • DrForbidden

      Wasn’t mentioned, AFAIK.

  • Raiyu

But is it region locked? That’s still a deciding factor for me.

    • jujubee88

Thankfully, PS VITA isn’t so you might have you’re answer right there.

    • TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, I wish they would have mentioned something about that. I’m a heavy importer, so I’d really like to know this too.

EDIT: Also, this is the last thing I recall regarding the region lock on the PS4 from a few months ago:

If you don’t want to dig through the article to find it, Shuhei Yoshida is asked to comment on region locking and here was what happened:

“I asked Yoshida about the possibility of region locking going away in the next generation. However, he did not respond, saying only that he knows the answer to the question, but did not want to get an unhappy call from his PR department.”

      • PrinceHeir

        i hope it’s not!!!!

  • SpectralRaiden

Sony just curb-stomped Microsoft. It’s sad how choosing a console this upcoming gen is so pitifully easy–Sony basically just gave us every reason to buy they’re console.

  • jujubee88

    …Are you kidding me?
    …You’re reading the comment section?

    • HeatPhoenix

Because I like it when consoles have video games I actually want to buy. Especially at 400 euros (550 dollars)

  • Sevyne Sony going into troll mode. Too funny!

    • fyi1191

      Micro$oft is officially done.

      • MrRobbyM

Microsoft will stay afloat with Halo and other pew pew games

        Alive, but just barely.

    • LordKaiser

I know but pause it at the end and read the tiny print.

      • Sevyne

The tiny print doesn’t really bother me though. It’s ONLY the multiplayer aspect of the PS4’s connectivity and not a full blown paywall like XBL. It’s also cheaper than XBL, provides you with tons of great discounts on digital games, AND stuffs you to the brim with free games every single month. A year sub to Plus pays itself back in like a single week. People would be crazy to be upset over it.

Been a Plus subber since day 1 and plan to stick with it.

        • LordKaiser

I can’t afford it ATM. It’s the same reason why I’m not getting FFXIV. they need to clarify this.

          • Sevyne

Plus is $50 for an entire year. That’s less than the price of a single game, and you get 3 PS3 games, 2 Vita games, and whatever they decide on for PS4 games every single month, plus loads of discounts, exclusive/early betas, full game demos, 1GB Cloud Storage (both Vita and PS3), etc. On top of this, your first month starts you off with like 12 PS3 games, and 6 Vita games right away. PS+ was designed with people who can’t afford to toss money around on games every month in mind, so how can anybody not afford it when it was intentionally made as affordable as possible? It costs less than a burger, fries, and a drink once a month…That’s pretty poor reasoning.

        • HeatPhoenix

All kinds of shit I just don’t want nor want to pay for. The price doesn’t matter if I don’t want the product. I get that it’s a good deal for the cash, lots of bang4buck, but I don’t want that buck, I just want online multiplayer and in my opinion it should’ve been just as free as it has always been for Sony, Nintendo and PC.

          • Sevyne

Are you really THAT much of a cheapazoid? Yes free is nicer than not free, but it’s slightly over $4 a month when you pay for a year. Personally I’d rather toss em a little something so that the servers are better maintained/improved because really PSN is as slow as old people f***ing right now.

            • HeatPhoenix

              5 times 12 = 60 euros.
60 euros = 80 dollars. It’s 80 dollars a year for things I don’t want + a service I used to get for free. I’m not saying it’s a bad deal and I’ve never had trouble with the PSN servers as they are now. Do you really think the money is going to go towards building faster game servers? It’s going to go towards the servers for the new features… more features I don’t want, like Gaikai and whatnot. I could imagine if they charged us extra for that, you know? Like how PS+ is right now with the cloud gamesaves and everything…

              • Sevyne

I understand it’s more expensive over there, but just note that a year of plus is not 60 euros (I don’t even know where you conjured that number up from) it’s 50.

I also hate to say it (because MS can honestly go to hell), but when you compare the speed between PSN and XBL, PSN is horribly slow and I have an amazing connection.

                • HeatPhoenix

I was going for 5 euros each month (12) but I guess if you pay up front it’s 50. Well, I guess I’ll just have to deal with it whenever I get A) A PS4 (which might be a whlle, no exclusives that tickle my fancy YET) B) a good multiplayer game for it

                  • Sevyne

Well maybe it’s just me, but I can’t really understand why anybody would only get the 3 months sub for Plus if they intend to keep it active. It’s the more expensive choice overall. I just toss a year on it and let it be without worrying.

                    • HeatPhoenix

Before I got a certain game for PS3 (Gundam Extreme Vs.) I had entire months where I didn’t touch my PS3 much and only played PC or something, so it happens.

                    • Sevyne

                      Yeah I suppose so.

  • shogunknight

Its 4:30 AM here, i cant sleep….im just too excited. God bless you Sony, thank you Neogaf and the members of Gematsu that gave the messages (no drm and used game policy) in twitter. I now have a next-gen console to look forward to. I cant even concentrate because of the excitement….HAA!!

  • DarthBrian

    I just pre-ordered a PS4 and Kingdom Hearts 3.
    <3 <3 <3

    • TetsuyaHikari

Well, someone was prepared, lol. I’ll probably wait until I find out about the region locking situation before pre-ordering mine so I can determine if I want to get the NA model or the JP model.

    • Anime10121

Oh Kingdom Hearts 3 is available for Preorder? Checks Amazon and preordered!!!!

  • rainelee

Sony kicked Microsoft’s ass tonight. And not just that, they have MS beaten for next gen. Sony fighting! :P

  • kuusou yume

i got my pre-order in! i bet i’m like 10000 in the queue, lol

  • Tyler James Sherwood

already preorder off of Amazon can’t wait

  • Anime10121

  • SpectralRaiden

Plus memberships carry over, but what about our already existing PSN accounts? Will we have to make a new one? You know what, Sony’s been doing everything so right I don’t even care atm.

    • GhostNomad

Your membership is tied to your account so it would only make sense for you to use the same login. Considering how Sony’s actually been the ones who were listening, I wouldn’t be worried.

  • Rydak

No DRM and $100 cheaper? Preordered.

  • Zero

I really like the price. If I had one gripe about Sony’s event, it was the decision to charge for multiplayer games.

In my heart, I still feel like this feature should be free. Yes, I understand Sony is losing out by keeping it free, I understand they also run dedicated servers and such. I still think that feature should remain free.

It’s not a huge deal for me. I’m currently a PS + member. I didn’t have any plans to cancel the service, especially not after this great month of free content. It works out for me, because I enjoy the service.

With that said, I understand that not everyone is like me. Some won’t like the service, or they can’t afford it. They shouldn’t be forced to pay for it to play games online.

It might not be so bad. It seems like F2P is going to be big on the PS4. We might see lots of games slip by possible subscription fee’s by using a F2P model? It might even be up to the publisher if they require PS Plus.

I could totally see a new Uncharted where the online MP modes are based around a F2P mode. In my mind, this would allow anyone to play online, with or without PS Plus.

I can’t be sure, we will just have to wait for Sony to clear up more details. I’m just ecstatic that Sony isn’t supporting the awful policies the Xbone is.

    • GhostNomad

I too would like some clarification on this subject. While I’m also a PS+ member and will continue being one, this is a potential con. There’ve been suggestions that PS+ might act as a sort of general online pass, but if you’re not a PS+ member, you could simply buy an online pass for the game you’re interested in playing.

However, this was only a speculation, so it should not be taken as a rumor.

      • Zero

That sounds like something that would be up to publishers. Just have to wait and see I suppose.

    • Sevyne

On a positive note, it’s ONLY the multiplayer being locked into Plus and not every online connected feature (like XBL), is cheaper than XBL and gets you a ton of discounts and free games that pays for itself several times over in a a single month for a year’s fee. Netflix, PSN and all of the other net features are usable regardless though.

      • Zero

I greatly enjoy the service. On a personal level, this decision doesn’t hurt me. It’s like I said above, I didn’t have any plans to cancel my service. Mostly for all the reasons you listed.

I do understand that others won’t share our love for the service, they don’t want the service. In my heart, I understand this, I understand why this would make some upset. They don’t want to have to use it, regardless of the quality of the overall service.

        It’s understandable.

        • Sevyne

Yeah I can understand why folks may be upset about it, but I just wanted to kind of plug why they should want to get Plus regardless. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea I suppose, but you know as well as I that there isn’t much to dislike about the service. :)

        • kuusou yume

Same here. I already got my price paid back and more with all the games PS+ gave us. This MP add-on doesn’t effect me much & I will renew my PS+ if they keep releasing amazing stuff.

    • kuusou yume

I totally agree with you Zero. I don’t even play online games except co-op, and I still think it should be free.

    • DarthNemesis

The success of Live is the reason for this. I agree with you, but Live has proven that people will pay.

  • MrKappa

Having to pay to play games online? This is essentially the same thing as Gold for Xbox and the new upgrade for Gold is making it look like PS+.
Everything else about the PS4 stomps the Xbone but paying for multiplayer is just… :/

    • Sevyne

But you’ll still be able to access all of your other online services without Plus. It just applies to online multiplayer in games.

  • Archvile

Can’t say paying for online bother me that much, having owned an XBL Gold membership for 5 years and that. That’s really the only con i had with the console itself BUT im still saving for one.

  • Michael Garling

This is obviously the next-gen console I’ll side with, but the no backwards compatability thing still irks me. Really? It’s like if Blu-ray players came out, and my whole DVD collection had become redundant.

So basically, all my favourite PS3 games, they’ll be unavailable to me now unless I pull out the PS3. I really don’t have the space to have two consoles set up simultaneously, let alone three if I count the Wii, so this is a slightly tough sell.

That being said, considering all the things coming out around launch, I’ll certainly make the upgrade sometime around then. But I mean, what about next year, when KH2.5 HD comes out – if that’s a PS3 game, then we’ll all have to dust off our PS3s to play that. Similarly, if it’s a PS4 download title or something, then we’ll have the series split across platforms.

The PS3 games coming out next year certainly find themselves in a strange position. Most notable amongst those is GT6 – if I grab a PS4 around launch, the likelihood of me dedicating huge amounts of time to a PS3 game that will likely be out post-PS4 release is slim.

    • kuusou yume

It’s not Blu-ray that’s the issue for backwards compatibility. it’s the system architecture. Both PS3 & 360 used PowerPC processors. The new gen will be x86 processors like PC’s. They would need to port or rewrite the code of the old games for x86.

      • Michael Garling

Oh I know, it’s just frustrating is all. I mean, with the PS3, at least we could play PS1 games – now that’s not even on the cards, so I feel like a substantial chunk of my collection just became somewhat meaningless.

It’s also going to feel really weird when I grab a PS4 around launch, play those games, then suddenly have to dust off the PS3 throughout next year for Lightning Returns, Symphonia HD, and presumably KH2 HD.

  • DigitalDevilSummoner

Online multiplayer behind PS Plush is a deal breaker for me.

I don’t wanna to sound bitter or anything but is anyone else feeling the same ?

  • Gilgamesh2025

Can’t wait to find it under my christmas tree! ^^

    • Dasher1572

Question, I read that the ps4 will have a 500GB hard drive at launch… Okay that’s a lot for me, but does this mean that games are gonna be bigger and the 500GB is the minimum?

  • LordKaiser
  • HeatPhoenix

I don’t get why “you have to pay for online multiplayer” isn’t a story by itself?
