Lightning looks for Snow, encounters Lumina.

Square Enix has released the first gameplay video of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February.

The one-minute, 47-second clip is from the game’s E3 show floor demo, and shows Lightning running, climbing, fighting, and jumping, and her first encounter with new character Lumina.

Watch it below.

WOW. That looks smooth. Way smoother than the trailers. I hope we get this demo on psn.

  • Potionzmaster

Was she… about to summon at the end? o_0

    • Archvile

      Odin probably

      • Lightning

Odin probably looks different aswell. Same reason why they dont show anything for now, or Lightning not saying “Odin”

        • Archvile

          Thats a possibility. (:

  • マッシュー

God, actually looks pretty cool. Still need to play FFX13-2 ._.

    • Sapientia

It’s called Final Fantasy XIII-2, not X13-2. That would be “ten thirteen 2″…

  • Anime10121

That looked FAR better than the original trailer, and my anticipation has just skyrocketed! Man i hate that this has been delayed :(

Excellent gameplay demo. Polished performance, good graphics, and great combat.

  • Noctis Caelum

    OMG, this looks just amazing.
In 0:40 reminds me a little bit of Dark Souls in the library.^^

  • new_tradition

Oh gosh, this looks so good O_O

l’ll be waiting for you in 2014, Lightning <3

  • bloodiOS

Frame rate, just like how it was with the game’s predecessors, runs smoothly while traveling through narrow areas and during battles. Now, why not show some footage of Lightning traveling through open and populated areas?

    • Anime10121

Give it time, E3 hasn’t started yet, this is just a preview of whats to come!

      • bloodiOS

My attention would be too focused on the next-gen Final Fantasy by then.

        • Anime10121

Oh trust, I cant wait for Versus either, but in the mean time, I’ll take what they give us from LR as it will be releasing much earlier.

    February 2014!!! T_T

  • aeoncs

That actually looks pretty sweet. Not sweet enough to hype me in any way, though – but that’s thanks to the predecessors.
    Still lookin’ forward to it.

  • whiteferrero

Hmmm that didn’t really show the transition from field to battle, but anyway still looking forward for the final installment. :D

  • artemisthemp

I really looking forward to playing this February 2014

    • KnifeAndFork

      Versus XIII instead

      • SOLOmio

        kingdom hearts 3 instead

  • kenshee

Ok, so I’ve got until feb 2014 to get back into XIII-2 and knock out the DLC and extra endings, no problem.

Oh wait, kingdom hearts 1.5 HD remix comes out before then, that’s 2 games and a couple hours worth of cutscenes from a third, but still, plenty of time left, no problem.

Oh wait, Tales of xillia is coming out soon, pretty long Jrpg, but hey, feb 2014 is over half a year away, haha.

Oh wait, SMT IV, soul hackers, bravely default, pokemon X/Y, ff XIV: ARR, project X zone, mario and luigi dream team bros and probably a few more are all coming out between now and feb 2014…

    And that’s just Jrpgs…

Yeah XIII-2, I’m sorry but I’m just going to have to quickly youtube Lightning’s DLC and call it a day :/

    • Lightning

The game isnt that bad as most claim it to be. Its because everyone compares it to former FF’s and thats just something you cant do with FF cause of the unique storylines and different gameplays.

Alot of people dont understand this and say they are fans. In your pov, i understand you have other games to play, but i wouldnt youtube it. the DLC has about 5mins conversation and 20min Gameplay.

You get more out of the story. If you are not gonna play it, atleast Youtube the cutscenes.

      Its worth it, really.

      • kenshee

Wait what? I loved XIII-2, I finished the game probably the week it came out…

I’m not saying I’ll skip XIII-2 and just watch a few scenes on youtube, I’m just talking about the DLC and about how much Jrpgs are coming out compared to usual.

EDIT: ok, I see now nowhere in my previous post did I explicitly say I actually finished the main game of XIII-2. It was sort of implied though? Or at least that’s what I tried to do, haha ‘^^

        • Lightning

          Ah right, my bad.

You’ll finish the Lightning DLC within 30mins.

Extra Endings are not that hard to get. Id say a day or two at most.

Funny endings, but wont add too much to the real ending.

      • KnifeAndFork

Even if all FF’s are different from one another, they usually all share similar basic principles of what makes a good RPG. Taking out towns, making it ultra linear, taking influence from Call of Duty, using a cumbersome weapon and item upgrade system, making it so if the main character dies then game over and putting half the story on datalogs is not part of that…

        • xMCXx

Yup, FFXIII/-2 were just not good as RPGs.
          RPG Light, basically.

      • aeoncs

Well, of course people compare and let’s be honest, they/we have a right to do so.
It’s just that the series hasn’t been able to deliver a truly satisfying overall package for quite some time now.

XII had a truly great gameplay with lots of exploration, customization and fun combat… combined with mostly very bland characters and a story that just felt half-baked, even though the setting was extremely promising.

XIII/XIII-2 offered a (imo) great cast of deep characters one could actually care about, with a decent, yet rather peculiar storyline. On the other hand there’s the ‘interesting’ but frankly messed up gameplay – in both games, in different ways.

So it’s really a normal reaction to compare those titles to the “good times”, even though it might be a little unfair as gaming in its entirety and the potential target audience have just changed over time.

  • xMCXx

Looks good from a graphical standpoint but that was to be expected.
Its predecessors also looked good, but were pretty bad/average games.
More importantly would be a look into the world and the interaction with other characters,
