Kitase interested in more Final Fantasy HD remasters

'If we had to pick one, it would be Final Fantasy XII.'

Square Enix might pursue future Final Fantasy high-definition remasters, if sales of Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster are successful.

“We’ll have to wait and see if these remasters [Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster] are going to be successful, first,” producer Yoshinori Kitase told RPGSite at E3.

“If they do well, I think this will pave the way for more of the previous games to remade in an HD sort of quality. I mean, if we had to single out one of the vast number of Final Fantasy titles which we could make in HD, it would have to be Final Fantasy XII.”

Kitase concluded, “What I can say though is that I hope the remastering of X and X-2 will trigger similar projects for more of the past games.”

    Sign me up again!

However, if they do do this, I hope there is no trophy requiring me to get the Danjuro. I have friends who tried grinding for that thing for over 50 hours (just grinding Danjuro that is) and never got the drop. Hence, I never bothered. But if there’s a trophy for it, obviously I’d have to do that. >_>

    • Alos88

I hear the Tournesol is a nightmare, it was so complex to get there’s a guide on GameFAQs just for aqquiring that one weapon!

      • DarthBrian

It’s complex but acquiring the parts doesn’t require waiting for a 0.5% drop or whatever it is for Danjuro. It’s ridiculous. :p

  • MechaMefi

Kitase is interested in more money.

Just kidding, I love to see FFXII in HD. I always liked it, but it isn’t very popular compared with others FF.

    • solbalmung

Exactly because honestly it feels more like a MMORPG than a Final Fantasy. Lackluster story, zero character charisma and developement (Balthier the exception). The gameplay good thought (maybe at some point it feel waaay automated, make the best gambit and watch your characters decimate all the monsters in a zone) and the OST made by Hitoshi Sakimoto is excellent.

  • Demolish

they give us a chance, let make it happen :D

  • Yuri Meitzen

if i were to choose i would prefer FF8 or 9 = but FFXII is fine as long as they bring the zodiarkzodiac(don’t remember the name xD) edition

  • Martian Wong

How about Type-0 in HD for both Japan and US?

    • Budgiecat

      Oh yeah…….THAT TOO

Even more so than FF XII

  • Budgiecat

I want a Bouncer HD remake with online co-op and VS

    • MosquitoLemon

So long as we’re in candyland, where’s my HD Racing Lagoon?

      • Budgiecat

        now you speakin mah language…

  • Azuardo

Would be interesting to see how they price an FF12 HD since it’s just one game compared to the PS3 version of X & X-2 HD which is obviously two games in one. Unless they released it at the price of the Vita versions of what X and X-2 are separately. Or, they could release it at the price of X & X-2 PS3 but include the Vita version free. I think that would be best.

They mentioned a few years ago that they wouldn’t rule out remastering FF7-9, but I’m not sure what a remaster of PS1 games would end up looking like. Upping the textures and character models I guess is the main thing. But would be fantastic to bundle them onto one disc. I’d be all for a disc that has FF7, 8 and 9 on it.

    • Michael Garling

FF7-9 can’t be ‘remastered’, per se, because the all use pre-rendered backgrounds (as did Resi 1-3) – these fell out of favour during the PS2 years. PS2 games were then done entirely in 3D, hence remastering them is a logical, rather simple process.

With a game that uses pre-rendered backgrounds though, they’d essentially have to entirely re-do everyone of those backgrounds – think of them as static FMVs, which the character models (and other certain items) would move over. Hence why the ‘camera’ is static, and the characters’ size changes dependant on the distance they are away from the front of the screen. The background’s kinda like a painting, whereas the characters are the things that use 3D textures etc.

Square re-doing those games would be almost as time-consuming as remaking the games entirely, so I doubt we’ll ever see a project like that, sadly. But we can dream.

  • Alkaid

Legend of Dragoon …HD, super mega remake edition. Totally impossible but I’d love that to death. xD

    • Adol Christin

That has nothing to do with Square Enix, But I would like that as well.

      • Alkaid

Well but since sony didn’t mention it once and SE is dead set on more HD remakes. They could do it. And since they worked over the whole FFX Game to make it look better. xD

Ah selfish talk, sorry. Type-0 would be nice as well ofcourse, but I’m a bit sceptical since SE didn’t even mention that one at the E3.

  • Adol Christin

I’d love FFXII in HD :) Just imagine playing XII HD on the go on the Vita…

    • Zuhri69

That is actually wonderful. Let’s hope it will come true.

      • jujubee88

It was rumored, but nothing really come of it.

  • ole

Good to hear. FFXII is one of the most underestimated and most challenging in the FF series. Except music everything is masterpiece for me. I hope they not release the International Zodiac Job System edition. It made much more easier compare to original license board.

    • MechaMefi

I don’t think the ZJS was easier. In fact i find it more hard, because now the characters can’t equip all kind of weapons and stuff. You have to choose the class.

Also I think that it makes the game more like the old ones, with the class system, whichis better. At least for me.

  • Ritsujun

And if XII HD remaster’s successful, we might get VIII/IX HD remaster next.

  • xMCXx

    Why not?
XII had a bullshit story, but was still enjoyable.

  • artemisthemp

It would make sense to remake FFXII into HD, since current PS3 can play PS1 and PS3, but not PS2

  • Rafael Martines

My hopes for HD Remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics :3 with HD Sprites like Disgaea 4 :P and new summons animations o/

    • Micheal Scott

me too ill kill to have my fav Final Fantasy game Remaster in HD like Disgaea 4 and with more character from Final Fantasy ;D

  • Hikaru Lighthalzen

ff12 HD…….. well i already beat the game , but i will get one if there are remake for 12 and its for vita XD

  • bloodiOS

Well, of course it has to be Final Fantasy XII, anything else would simply require way too much effort to pass for HD. Beside, they shouldn’t have too much trouble with this one, since the original game already has widescreen support.

    • Zero

Bingo. I’m glad you mentioned that. I don’t see them doing an HD version of anything before FFX on consoles. I think those projects will likely stick to portables.

It’s easier and cheaper for them to do it that way. It’s also a safer bet when it comes down to how much money the project makes.

That kinda sucks, but at least that doesn’t rule out PSP games, which some have already mentioned in the comments.

The only asterisk I might place here is a possible Final Fantasy 7 HD for consoles. I won’t ever completely rule that out.

  • Locksus

I’d be all over for FFVI remake, as it’s by far the best Final Fantasy I’ve played. I doubt they’ll ever bother to make one, though :I

    • dasombrero

I know how you feel. The re-release back in the PS1 with the added cg scenes just don’t do it justice. I’d love to see a next generation style of the game…but I’m also not sure I want to see a Nomura’d version where there’s too many pretty boy looking protagonists.

FFVI by far had the most engaging characters and story for me, but to be fair that’s also what I grew up with so it makes me biased. I still consider Setzer my favorite FF character…who doesn’t like drunk, romantic, down on his luck airship captains?

      • Locksus

This song makes me feel so, so nostalgic right now. In my opinion, it’s the best FF field theme. I love it.
The soundtrack is one of many reasons why I love FFVI.

        • Tetsu

Yeah man, one of my all time favorite soundtracks!

I had the privilege of attending the Distant Worlds Final Fantasy concert and it was amazing!

        • Budgiecat

          I love that cover.

          Best FF cover

    • Tetsu

That was my very first RPG I ever played, and it’s also my favorite Final Fantasy. Everything about it is excellent.

I’d looooooooove a remake, but hell i’d even want the FFIV Complete Collection treatment for it if we could get it, i’d be playing the hell out of it on my Vita!

    • $3582264

FFVI is by far the best RPG ever IMO. Would be cool if they would make a 2D sequel to that like they did with FF after years.

    • Elvick

This is about remasters, not remakes.

      • Locksus

Maybe so, but I felt my comment wasn’t terribly off-topic here, so I decided to post it.

    • JoJo_649

I’d be over it, only if they did it like the recent Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64, just prettier graphics, keep the compilation stuff out or just don’t do it and remake VI.

      • Locksus

Agreed. I’m actually playing through OoT3D and I’ve got to say that it is simply fantastic, even though the original game is, what, 15 years old now? I have never played it before, but I’m finding it immensely satisfying and enjoyable.

        • JoJo_649

It’s such a timeless classic, I played it on the Collector’s edition a cousin let me borrow, and even with it’s aged graphics, the gameplay and awe is still there, I hope they remake Majora’s Mask so you can enjoy it too.

  • MrRobbyM

YAS. PLEASE. Give me a XII HD remaster and you will have repent for all your sins, SE.

  • $3582264

I would love to see FFXII HD on the vita. Not interested in FFX at all.

  • TetsuyaHikari

God no. I’d take an HD remake of Crisis Core before this, lol. Ugh.

    • DongT

I’d love an hd remake of crisis core actually~

      • TetsuyaHikari

        I was kidding =3=

If anything deserves an HD remake, it’s Type-0. Besides, if we were to get the HD remake of XII, they will probably screw over the NA fans again by leaving out the Zodiac Job System, which was an updated version of XII only seen in Japan (i.e. International version).

        • bloodiOS

Well, Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster is based on the originals’ International versions.

What things benefit most from the HD remaster?
In this HD remaster, it is based upon the International Version, it was only released in Japan. On Final Fantasy X and X-2, there is a feature called Creature Create, this is the first time that European and North American audiences can experience this, you can modify monsters and have them join your party as members.

          Source: Nova Crystallis

So yeah, I do think we have a pretty good chance of getting the International Zodiac Job System version if Final Fantasy XII is ever to be HD-remastered.

          • TetsuyaHikari

I suppose that’s true, but it’s really too hard to tell. There are many inconsistencies in the gaming industry and no real pattern to follow when it comes to this sort of thing, soooo… I’ll believe it when I see it (not regarding X and X-2, but if XII gets a remake).

            • Nice Boat

Well Kingdom Hearts HD got 1 Final Mix so let’s hope it’s consistent.

          • Bobby Jennings

We would get it. No doubt about it.

  • Nice Boat

If it happens I hope they balance the Quickenings. In the original FF12 I could spend three minutes doing the Quickenings making boss fights really anticlimatic.

Also, did Square forget about Type 0?

  • rockman29

I want X, X-2, and XII all on one disc ffs.

  • Chestnut Bowl

Why, I would love an HD remaster of XII! I’d prefer a remake, though. You could tell even on release that the actual game they wanted to make was beyond the PS2.

  • gamelayer

God… I wish someone would make a new Shadow Hearts game.

    • Kobracon

My GOD this! So MUCH THIS! Shadow Hearts 2 is by far the most unique and awesome RPG I have played! So many interesting sidequests, memorable characters and a kickass battle system! SH3 wasn’t as good but still a fun ride with even more crazy characters.

Siiiigh what happened to this awesome series….its in the Ether alongside Onimusha…

  • Learii

I want FF 9 HD not FF XII dam iit

  • new_tradition

I guess FFXII would be the easiest HD remaster to do. Port it to the PS3, upscale that mofo, and use the zodiac job class version, and we’re good, lol.

Though a PS3 version is debatable outside Japan, I think. I’m under the impression Sony has specific guidelines that include a HD port to be a collection of at least 2 games, right? FFXII HD for the Vita is plausible, but maybe only that?

    Of course like a lot of other people I’d like to see Type-0 get a chance. A Vita port is enough to make me drop the money on the system personally if it came in English. But I remember Tabata saying something about experimenting with a HD version in 2010 in the Ultimania Guide, so there could be a tangible game version hidden away at SE Japan’s HQ ;A;

    • Budgiecat

Of course it’s the easiest FF to do. What else is there? FF XI? unless you add in the FF CC games for GC/Wii. The PS1/SNES/NES games would need to be completely remade. Even Type O Would need some completely new textures and higher polygon models.

  • Barrit

I really hope this happens! FFX, FFX-2, and FFXII were the only Final Fantasy games that I didn’t play.

  • Warboss Aohd

    FF9 or FF6 HD

all o’ my money, especially if in da latter’s case ya add Ultros as a party member.

  • PrinceHeir

sadly, i’ll only buy it if it’s International Zodiac Version.

    same with FFX/FFX-2.

im willing to import the JPN version(since they’re using their own International version, which wasn’t localized,. there are however some fan translations circling around the net)

  • whiteferrero

yeahhhhh… how about fleshing out the story while you’re at it. 5 hours worth of more cut-scenes, and character development.

    • TetsuyaHikari

Or simply remove Vaan altogether. That would make the experience a hell of a lot better since he’s nothing more than a paperweight anyway.

      • Nice Boat

You just say that because you want us to listen to Ondore’s lies

        • TetsuyaHikari

Noooo… I say that because he’s the most pathetic excuse of a main in a Final Fantasy title to date. I could have shit a better character.

          • Nice Boat

I remember when I first played and I got to the first duel against Gabranth, Vaan was really out of place. Ashelia was the character desiring revenge and when Vaan started talking in that scene it felt so poorly placed it made the script ridiculous (Ashelia: You killed my king! / Vaan: and Reks / Luke: You killed my father!) I never even understood why Vaan was travelling with them.

            • TetsuyaHikari

Yeah, he sticks out like a sore thumb pretty much the entire time, lol. To make matters worse, he’s too cheap to even get himself a shirt. Come on… If you’re going to go shirtless, the least you could do is look badass, like Yang.

        • AdamBoy64

I was half expecting that to be a link to the old Mega64 skit. Memories.

      • Zero

I have to agree. Ashe should have been the main character you played as in my opinion. I would also have accepted Basch, he would have been much better, or hell, they should have let Vaan’s brother be the main character. Yes, Reks.

I think they wanted the main character to be more laid back or something? Vaan started off decent enough. The problem was, he becomes a whiny little brat as the story goes along. It just gets worse as the game progresses. At least some characters were able to pick up the slack. Many of the others were kinda like forgotten or something? Penelo who? Don’t even get me started on the post Cid/ending of the game.

I’ve heard good things about Revenant Wings. I’ve never played it. To anyone who has – Is Vaan more tolerable in it? I sure hope so.

I have a very love/hate relationship with FF12. I like it enough to complete it, I would enjoy replaying it in HD. I just hate some of the writing, the poor character development, the awful ending, the lame final boss, etc.

        • TetsuyaHikari

Personally, I think SE was wanting to release a game with a female as the lead character back then (especially since during the first reveals in magazines, Ashe was looking to be the main because she was the first featured and featured the most), but they were pressured out of it, probably from within their own company. Some ideals probably clashed and they finally just settled on keeping a male as the main in the franchise because they felt that the fans weren’t ready to break tradition yet.

Now, before the FFVI fanboys get on my back here and say Terra/Tina was the main in that game, along with Celes, you have to bear in mind… That game had one of the largest rosters in an FF title to date, excluding FFT, so it’s hardly fair to say who was the main since you had free reign as far as that went.

That would be like playing FFIV, then going through Yang’s backstory and suddenly being like, “Oh look! I know more about him than Rosa now, so he’s a main!” FFVI had plenty of character growth for most of the characters (unless it was like Umaro or something, lol), so it’s really difficult to determine who was a main and who was part of the large support cast.

I think in XII’s case though, it’s crystal clear that Vaan holds about as much importance to the story as a chocobo does.

          • adhesive

Final Fantasy XII started life off as a Vagrant Story-esque game with Basch as the main character. Matsuno only turned it into what it is today because he loved Final Fantasy XI that much, and he wanted a protagonist to not have much importance in the story so that the player could see political debacles from the perspective of an outsider. That’s the purpose of both Vaan and Penelo.

If Ashe was displayed a lot, it was only because of her importance to the story overall. They’ve also advertised the hell out of Lightning for XIII-2 despite her getting barely any screen time, because she’s important to the main storyline in the XIII series.

            • TetsuyaHikari

I’m sorry. I lost you at “purpose”, then when you mentioned “Vaan” and “Penelo” shortly after. Basch and Ashe though, I consider those the mains of XII. As for the Lightning promotion… I think that was simply because she had already gained a reputation from her role in XIII and she is more likeable by fans than Serah, not because she’s important to the main storyline in XIII (although she is, but that’s not the point).

Had there been a XII-2, Ashe would have once again been the focus, even if there would have been a different main. So yeah, comparing it to XIII-2 is hardly reasonable.

              • MogCakes

What he says is true. The reason for Vaan/Penelo’s existence is to be the avatars of the player, outsiders to the going-ons of empires clashing and all sorts of political mayhem. That doesn’t make them more or less likeable of course, but that is the purpose of their existence, as stated by the FFXII Scenario Ultimania guide book.

You can argue that Matsuno wanted Balthier to be the lead male and that disagreements with the execs lead to his leaving the project 2/3rds way through and Vaan and Penelo being created as avatars, but at that point you’re getting into ‘Matsuno’s vision is the true FFXII! Not the actual FFXII we got!’ or ‘what could have been’ vs ‘what exists’ which devolves into a debate of opinions.

                • TetsuyaHikari

I’m sorry, but you can slice it any way you want it. I have never played another Final Fantasy to date where two characters felt so out of place in the story. Vaan moreso than Penelo.

                  • MogCakes

Ditto to you if your argument is just ‘I don’t care my opinion is right!’. I outlined as such in the second half of my post up there.

                    • TetsuyaHikari

It’s not about whether or not my “opinion” is right. Play the damn game and you’ll see for yourself. They have as much importance to the game as shit does to the bottom of my shoe.

Point is, we could have done without either (or both) of them and the game would have been fine or dare I say… Better.

                    • MogCakes

I know more about the game’s story than you most likely, I’ve played it multiple times. They don’t hold much storyline importance because they’re avatars for the player. That’s that. It was even stated in the Ultimania book.

Your own opinion about whether they should/shouldn’t be in the story is just that, an opinion. And as I already outlined in the second half of my first reply to you up there, it’s pointless to try and push your opinion as the right one (you clearly are, no matter what you say otherwise). You don’t seem to get that at all. You can continue to debate against me on ‘what should have been’ all you like, feel free to reread my first post as many times as you hit submit.

The hilarious part is I actually agree with you, but you’ll continue to rant at me because I’m not saying your opinion (and by proxy mine) is the ‘right’ one that everyone should agree with.

                    • TetsuyaHikari

Once again, it’s not an OPINION, lol. Since you’ve played the game “multiple times” and “know more about the game’s story”, then you should know DAMN well that if you take them out of the story, nothing will have changed. They’re simply background noise.

This isn’t really up for debate and it certainly isn’t about opinions. It also doesn’t matter if I’m right or wrong. I just don’t know how you can sit here and keep defending it (then claim you agree with me), that’s all.

Well, you’re free to think whatever you want, since you’re obviously going to do so anyway. You can take your Ultimania or any other guide book with you as well. If anybody honestly tries to convince you that Vaan or Penelo held even a FRACTION of significance to the story of XII, they’re lying through their teeth and don’t know their ass from their elbow. Anyone could simply say, “Oh, they are just avatars for the player.”, but why is it that this is the first and ONLY Final Fantasy I can think of where the “avatars” for the player seem more out of place than an ice dungeon in a desert?

Saying they are simply “avatars” to observe the story is a pathetic defense to try and excuse them as the horrible embodiments of terrible writing that they are. Here’s a thought… Why not, oh, I don’t know… Give us avatars that actually have something to DO with the story like in the other titles?

I stand by what I said before. Ashe and Basch would have been more suitable as a main, then you could have just cut out the excess fat (i.e. Vaan and Penelo) and the game would have been just fine (and as I said before, even better). So yeah, you can take all of your “experience” and “books” as I said before and go about your merry way, cause I’m sorry, but if you can’t understand why these characters are completely irrelevant (yes, even as avatars), then I don’t think any book or amount of experience will help you.

                    • MogCakes

Except I’m not defending anything, I’m just stating what the Ultimania says, because it is what exists. I actually haven’t said anything either way about my own opinion on their relevance (which agrees with you). But hey, I seem to have gotten a nice rise out of you, and frankly I find that hilarious. In the context of what exists, Vaan and Penelo have purpose to the game. That’s that. Again.

If all you can retort with is a long-winded explanation of why I’m wrong despite me saying that my own personal opinion aligns with yours, then you have lost it entirely. You’re just arguing to prove yourself right at all costs now. And despite your page long wall of text, nothing you have said even refutes my first post. So please, do continue to reply angrily while re-reading it.

PS. Yes, you are arguing your opinion, I don’t give a shit what you try to tell me otherwise, it’s plain as day. You can believe whatever you like, of course.

        • Nice Boat

I would have liked Larsa as the lead. However, that would have turned XII into a Tactics ripoff (Young prince with an evil brother wishing to save a kingdom)

  • abcmocca .

ff12 is my favorite FF series, big world, great hunting quest, instant buy for my vita, and i hope SE give new map like Rosaria Empire territory, which rules the continent of Ordalia, i love traveling in this game.

  • Chimera Ant

i want all FF series in HD remaster and like the FF15 in terms of graphics and gameplay

  • Marcus Vinicius Tito

Well, if they make a HD version I want FFXII but if there´s any plans for ps1 games, they must make a remake from zero because 2d design for PS4 its waste of time

  • Atinverse

    Please please please!

  • Kurisu Makise

FFXII HD needs to happen, I’ll take FFXI and FFXII HD for Vita with no questions Kitase. Currently I’m slacking in my playthrough now as time on the TV is so limited these days and it’s only going to get worse during the summer.

    • TetsuyaHikari

Wha? You already DO have an HD port of XI. It’s called:

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

      • Kurisu Makise

Eh…XIV is XIV and XI ix XI. Similar yes but the worlds are different and so I’d like to enjoy both side by side, since I missed on XI.

        • TetsuyaHikari

It was more of a joke than anything, lol.

          • Kurisu Makise

Oh lol, twas a good joke =P (though easy to take out of context)

      • Sevyne

That was 100% true before the changes with ARR. It honestly is a totally different game now and a much better one at that. That said, it’s still a hard sell to me because I would never invest enough time to justify the subscription fees; Not anymore at least. My pay to play MMO days are long done.

Oh, I know. I tried out the beta on PS3 last weekend and I used to play XI on PS2 as well. I was just making a joke when I replied with that, haha, but honestly… XIV 2.0 is the closest they would get to an HD version of XI. It has basically improved upon 99% of what XI had to offer (granted, there are going to be some things which we still want from XI which aren’t featured in XIV 2.0 yet… *cough* THIEF *cough*).

          • Sevyne

            Fair enough.

  • Elvick

    Yes please.

    Then do an offline FFXI.

And I’m in the minority here, but give me some Dirge of Cerberus HD. Put it with Crisis Core. Sure, you’ll get the similar “Leave out DoC” crap that people do with FFX-2 included in this one. Meh~

    • Belenger

Sadly i can already say this is impossible, Hayter messed up too much on the localization of the game, it was never meant to be a DMC clone, original one was a really hard fps with online gameplay and USB keyboard and mouse support. Its another one of those games that SquareLA messed to much, like Drakencensorgard and Nier.

    • Kurisu Makise

Actually, since you brought up Crisis Core and DoC, I wouldn’t mind if they did Crisis Core and DoC Together to before or after Before Crisis Remake. Either way, if Square Enix is hungry for easy money (well besides Before Crisis R) this is how I’d do it and money is ready to spend.

Oh and maybe not totally offline FFXI but adhoc/P2P FFXI would be interesting.

  • Gilgamesh2025

Wouldn’t mind replaying FFXII in high definition, so yes please!

  • Kobracon

You can keep XII, Square. Just keep it.

  • Matthew McNamee

Please make either a FF VII HD remake or at least do a game of Advent Children. I’ll pay good money =D

  • LordKaiser

FFXII looks good on HD so it’s possible. they may bundle it with Type-0 or something. Anyway I hear some people PS1 games on HD or something but i doubt it’s possible. Those need a full remake cuz some of them has pre-rendered graphics and stuff that if you filter it some things will look even more pixelated etc. There’s even some PS2 games that can’t be remastered like Castlevania Curse of Darkness cuz it has 8 bit textures that when the resolution is increased it looks like someone cut paper and placed it all over the place.

  • Luis Boss

i want a remake of final fantasy 7

  • LastBoss

Bring it, Zodiac International PLEASE. I would like a redone version of Before Crisis, and a sequel to VII, after Dirge.
