Killzone: Shadow Fall lead designer Eric Boltjes has revealed the OWL, a player-controlled attack drone, on the official Killzone blog.
Speaking to the blog, Boltjes discussed the drone’s capabilities, which can be put into four categories: Attack Mode, Zipline Mode, Stun Mode and Shield Mode.
Attack Mode allows the player to attack any specified target, or defend a specified area from enemies within its range.
Zipline Mode deploys a zipline, which lets the player move “incredibly quickly from points A to B.”
Stun Mode can be used to deploy an area-of-attack blast, which stuns humanoid enemies and disables electronics within range.
Shield Mode activates a one-way energy shield, blocking incoming projectile whilst allowing the player to fire at enemies.
“We wanted to give the player more control over buddies in our game, and we quickly gravitated towards utilizing our futuristic theme to create something very technologically advanced and also extremely useful in the field,” Boltjes said.
“It was important that it was easy to use in the fray of battle and have suitable abilities for every type of situation the game throws at you, on top of all the other abilities/weapons the Shadow Marshal has at his disposal.
“The OWL is an advanced hovering attack drone used exclusively by the Shadow Marshals to give them all kinds of tactical abilities in the field. It attaches itself onto the Shadow Marshal’s suit until he gives it an order. When damaged, the OWL automatically returns and regenerates health until it receives an order again.”
