Learn the basics before the game's August 27 release.

Square Enix has released a new Final Fantasy XIV developer commentary video at E3 showcasing the PlayStation 3 version’s user interface.

In it director and producer Naoki Yoshida and community guy Toshio Murouchi walk viewers through adjusting the game’s settings, creating a character, moving throughout the world, using the map and duty list, the cross hotbar, and more.

Final Fantasy XIV is due out for PlayStation 3 and PC on August 27, and for PlayStation 4 in 2014. Watch the video below.

Just got my beta invite this morning for PS3. I can’t wait to experience this myself. The UI looks very user friendly.

Congrats! I was wondering when they were going start sending those. I applied too, but I wonder if I’ll get in. Do you happen to know if they’ve been sending out the invites for long now?

      • TetsuyaHikari

Well, I’ve been following the NA board and nobody has proven or claimed to have obtained their code today. Same with the EU region as well. I’m guessing today was just for JP invites and they will begin sending out NA/EU invites tomorrow.

Also, I’ve included a screenshot of the total file size for the game (after updating). It comes out to roughly 5.30-5.31 GB.

        • TetsuyaHikari

And I have NO idea why or HOW the picture posted twice. If a Mod has a way of simply removing one of the copies, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

EDIT: All of these downvotes already? Someone must be really mad I got an invite and they probably haven’t (yet?), lol.

        • TetsuyaHikari

Oh and here is a small gallery I uploaded earlier just showing the patching screen along with the server lists in case people were curious as to what the names of them were. I didn’t play XIV, so there may be some new ones here to see, I’m not sure.

        • Pyrofrost

So you’re on the JP version Tetsuya?

          • TetsuyaHikari

Right. I actually signed up for FFXIV 1.0 beta a long time ago when the original FFXIV beta was considered for PS3. I applied a promo code I obtained with my JP first print of Final Fantasy XIII when registering, but still selected my country as United States.

I applied again once the ARR beta site went up since I had a better PC by that point, so I applied for the PC version without a promo code.

            • Pyrofrost

I see. Well, I can confirm NA invites haven’t gone out yet, unless I’m just unlucky xD

I applied and I used my first print FFXIII promo code as well. So hopefully I get an email over the next day or two.

I know I’m posting a lot, but bear with me please. I just thought people should be aware of the updated NDA for phase 3. If you don’t feel like reading, here’s the tl;dr version:

    Discussing the beta is okay.
Screenshots for phase 3 are okay.
Video, audio, or screenshots from this phase along with phase 2, phase 1, and Alpha are not acceptable.

    Anyway, here’s the revision:

“Underthe FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Beta Test Agreement, we asked you to keep confidential the features, information, and bugs related to the Beta Test as well as information shared on the Beta Tester Forum. As of June 12, 2013, we grant you permission to disclose information regarding the Beta Test.

While we grant you permission to disclose information and remove restrictions set under the confidentiality provisions, in the case you would like to use any copyrighted materials, you must 1) agree and comply with our FINAL FANTASY® XIV: A Realm Reborn Beta Test Materials Usage License, 2) comply with any additional instructions provided by us.

Videos, sound, music or screenshots from the FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Alpha Test, Beta Test phase 1 and Beta Test phase 2 may not be used. As of June 12, 2013, Testers may post screenshots from the Beta Test phase 3, however, videos, sound, and music remain prohibited.”

Oh, so they did loosen up on some of the NDA stuff. Nice.

I have my beta client updated on PC. I haven’t received any new emails yet, but I’m a legacy member. They don’t have to, but they always email me regardless.

      • TetsuyaHikari

Well, I heard even Legacy members still require a registration key to participate in phase 3, which is basically what the e-mail is for in regards to members who participated in a previous phase or even 1.0.

EDIT: Also, Zero… Is there any way you can get rid of one of the copies of the picture attachment I posted below? I’m still not entirely sure why it even posted twice since you can only upload one picture at a time per post, lol.

        • Zero

I let me update my PC client without the key.

Looks like attachments in the post below? It doesn’t seem to let me edit those for some reason. I only see the text in the moderation tools.

          • TetsuyaHikari

Oh, you can update without the key. I was just getting reports of people being unable to PLAY without having a key. Granted, they couldn’t play right now anyway since the servers aren’t up, so I’m not sure what they were getting at.

Well, the attachment thing isn’t that big of a deal, but it does seem like a bug of some sort. You’re not supposed to be able to upload more than one attachment in your post, yet mine uploaded twice @w@

            • Zero

It was probably some kind of upload hiccup. I’d blame Disqus lol.

It’s one of the reasons I just use some kind of image hosting website and link it.

  • veruses

Glad the frame rate has improved from that last ps3 preview which was awful.

    • TetsuyaHikari

Well, it’s still running at 30fps. Not only that, but it’s REALLY difficult to gauge how well it actually runs since he was running around by himself. I’ll be more interested to see how it runs when the town is packed.

The PS2 version of FFXI suffered from lag, so I imagine XIV won’t be too much different unless something drastic has changed. We probably won’t see a fluid version (outside of the PC running at 60fps) until the PS4 port comes out.

  • Elvick

I’ve seen the UI demonstrated somewhere else before… not sure where.

Oh well, I still think it looks awesome. I just wish the PS4 version was coming at launch, so it’d be sooner… or at least a more specific date. D:

It’s going to be a looong wait.
