At Sony’s E3 press conference, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn would come to PlayStation 4. Today, the publisher has revealed a 2014 release date.

Players who purchase the PlayStation 3 version of the game will be able to “smoothly transition” their game accounts to the PlayStation 4 version.

“The heart of everything we’re working towards is enabling players and their friends to experience their own rich Final Fantasy adventure,” said Naoki Yoshida, producer and director. ”The deeply integrated social capabilities of the PS4 will make it a natural home for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The team and I are thrilled to continue our adventure on the next generation gaming platform, and we hope that you’ll join us!”

The PlayStation 3 and PC versions of Final Fantasy XIV will launch on August 27.

This is pretty cool BUT will I have to both pay for FF XIV subscription AND PS Plush subscription to play this ? Online behind a pay wall is deal breaker for me.

I don’t think so. I would imagine FFXIV will be exempt from the PS Plus requirements.

      • veruses

It will be just like FF11 on the 360. No Gold required.

Thanks thats helpful but the multiplayer paywall thing is REALLY bugging me. Do you know if we have any short of gamer reaction or is everyone honeymooning ?

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I know some people are upset about it.

I understand it 100%. In my heart, I still believe playing games online should be free.

I understand the flip side of things as well. I also know that PS Plus is a vastly better service than Xbox Live Gold.

It doesn’t really hurt me, but I know it hurts others. Lots of people don’t want to have to use the service, regardless of how good it is. That’s completely understandable.

Here’s the thing: Playing games online is NOT really free right now, even on the PS3. Why ? Because you buy the game ! By buying the game you buy access to the servers or to P2P in some cases.

It’s part of the game. I am sorry but it’s because all those complete idiots who didn’t know that and kept buying live subscriptions giving MS money to access EA’s servers for example ! And Sony came up, sneaked this in and still look like heroes. I mean why should I give Sony money to access Guerrilla Games’ servers for Killzone if I already bought the damn game ? And MS had their fans like drones talking about “how good of a service it was” when it’s not a about services.

Thanks a lot Live subscribers ! The PC gamer in me is having a big laugh by the way.

A great trailer! With all these amazing announcements I almost forgot we’re about to finally get to play this game. For a minute I was wondering how to make the wait for FFXV less painful but I think this game will keep me occupied for quite a while.

I’ll just wait for the Ps4 version…that way I can see how people view it by then, and it will have more content with less bugs.

    • Lelouch Vi Britannia

      agreed.

I’m debating waiting for the PS4 version myself. I’m not exactly thrilled to have PS3 and PS4 actively hooked up as it is, so the more titles get a PS4 version release the better. Plus August is a killer month in games, Xillia, Dragon’s Crown and no doubt I’ll still be playing The Last of Us…hmm, I wish we got a specific 2014 date. The longer you take to join, the more the community moves on ahead of you.

I rarely buy consoles at launch for that same reason. It’s too bad that there’s not PS3 attachment either.

Yeah…I was hoping Microsoft would do that with the Xbox but…they didn’t = Not to say tweaking the 360 to look like the Xbox One wasn’t a good idea (it was totally a good idea), eh just having so much consoles connected under the TV, ah well.

Yeah, I’m not really sure what I’m going to do about that situation. With my current setup, there’s no way I could put my PS4 anywhere without moving my PS3. That would be all well and good if Lightning Returns was the last PS3 title I play in November, but Sengoku Basara 4 is also coming out on PS3 in early 2014 (plus, for all we know, TGS may reveal even more PS3 titles for early 2014 too).

Bank on more titles in 2014 and beyond courtesy of Japan! “Please keep your PS3 connected” is going to become a thing lol =(

Will there be a Collector’s Edition for the PS4 or not?

    • artemisthemp

I ask that also, but guess no after reading “smoothly transition” their game accounts to the PlayStation 4 version.

I just watched the trailer. It’s awesome!

    • Gilgamesh2025

      Indeed!

  • Elvick

Sorry Square, I’m waiting. Even if PS4 doesn’t get the CE.

Hopefully they realize a lot of people, or at least some, will be doing this. So don’t do something stupid over ‘lack of sales’ or something.

  • artemisthemp

I am so happy, that I can continue my FFXIV on PS4 with my PS3 character
