Start with four characters and pay for more.

A free version of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate will be released on the PlayStation Store in Japan in addition to the paid retail version, a Famitsu report reveals.

It will have four playable characters—Kasumi, Ayane, Hayate, and Ryu Hayabusa—and offer full access to the game’s online and offline modes, with the exception of story mode. All costumes and stages, minus download ones you haven’t purchased, will be available. Additional characters can be purchased for 400 yen each. And story mode will cost 1,500 yen. It will also be compatible with Dead or Alive 5 download content.

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate will launch in Japan on September 5.

    So… it’s a freemium? Bleh.

    • Tetsu

Yeah, that model makes any game feel cheap.

I guess the other way to look at it, though, is a super deluxe demo. lol

  • GhostNomad

Actually not a bad idea for people who pick a character and stick with him/her.

  • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

    Thats actually awesome.

Looks like DOA5 DLC will work on DOA5U. Which means, the game won’t come with any of the previous DLCs :/

  • Peacenutman

I wonder what the last 2 question mark slots would be? One of them is definitely Leon, so that leaves one more. I really hope for a totally new never seen before character that is not a cross-over character.

  • Nate

We kind of got this too. DOA 5 vita has one of the best demo’s I’ve seen.

    • Kurisu Makise

It’s a shame that after releasing DOA5+ they announced Ultimate with no signs of Vita getting any of the Ultimate stuff =(

  • DragonSix

That’s the wrong way to go about it. They should unlock 99% of the cast and only sell the cosmetics. It would actually work great that way.

  • Charlie

I was hoping for more than just one more character announcement. Slightly disappointed.

  • Serovath

freemium….. next they’ll release dynasty warriors for free and sell generals separately… and dynasty warriors… has alot of generals… $$$$

  • xMCXx

4 bucks for a character is kinda expensive.

    • MosquitoLemon

I think Capcom charges more for the DLC characters in UMVC3… and that’s a game that you’ve already paid for. This is actually a pretty good option for someone who only plays one or two characters.

      • MasterSensei

They don’t have you buy every single character and there are only 2 DLC characters anyway…

        • MosquitoLemon

Because you have to buy the game…

    • SuperLuigi

Ya that adds up to above $90.00 to buy them all separate.

  • PrinceHeir

    just like Uncharted 3 eh??

i feel like next gen will have tons of free to play games(for multiplayer) and pay for single player.

but ehh i’ll stick to the full version.

if you calculate how much will you spend to get all characters with DLC, you’ll see how much money you’ll have to spend compared to a full disc.

plus full disc can be on sale after a few months so why bother with the free to play version?

    got this from allgamesbeta

    Mila so hot!!!

    • PrinceHeir

if you can’t see it :P

      • bloodiOS

Fair-faced, short-haired, tomboyish athlete girls drenched in sweats are always very, VERY irresistible.

        • PrinceHeir

          soo fucking true!!

love hot girls that are working out covered in sweat and all :)

  • WiiStation360

Hmm…well, at least this will be a good way to test the game before purchasing it

  • Raiu

I know a lot of people don’t like the free to play models for various reasons but think about it… This is a good way to introduce new players into the mix, other than PS+, giving them the chance to try it out for themselves and if they like it, they rather go purchase the full version instead…

  • Guest

It’s good for people like me who only use a few characters anyway. I’d like to see more freemium games.

  • Gilgamesh2025

Cool, that’s just what I was waiting for! :D

  • KnifeAndFork

  • HeatPhoenix

Great for people who had no real interest in buying the game in the first place!

  • HeatPhoenix

I really hope this doesn’t become a success, by the way, I’m really the kind of guy who does main a character or two, but loves fiddling with all of the others in non-serious matches for some variety. This game totals way above the usual sale price of a video game, right (ontop of that, it being DLC it’s not really that save as an actual game disc)?

    • MosquitoLemon

So then you would be one of the people who just buys the game, I don’t see the downside here.

      • HeatPhoenix

Oh! That’s still an option too, nice.

        • MosquitoLemon

Yeah, but you know what I mean. Your opinion would limit the options for people in the future, while mine wonders what you have to lose if this extraneous distribution gets more popular?

          • HeatPhoenix

Oh yeah, I just hope both continue to exist when the publisher can make more money like this.

            • MosquitoLemon

Yeah, I think if it gets to the point where there are only people willing to pay for a game piecemeal (like 100 people buying one character is better than 1 person buying 15 characters), they’ll just stop making the game altogether. Which would be sad, but maybe better than ditching the game without testing the water for interest.

WTF!? when I was a kid
Unlocking characters is making an effort finish the story multiple times and by using ( up up right left right left A B) cheats. Now, they are milking us.
