Rumor: IllumiRoom to debut at Xbox reveal event

Subsidized $300 next-gen Xbox apparently "scrapped."

Paul Thurrott, who correctly leaked the next-gen Xbox’s reveal date (as well as other still-to-be-proven tidbits), has said IllumiRoom, Microsoft Research’s out-of-screen projection project, will make an appearance at tomorrow’s console unveil.

He also said that the $300 subscription-based next-gen Xbox, which he previously spoke about, has been scrapped, leaving only the $500 base model.

Thurrott’s proven accurate on one count so far, but as Microsoft has yet to confirm anything, take his words with a grain of salt.

The Xbox reveal will be live streamed tomorrow at 10 a.m. PDT / 1 p.m. EDT.

He hasn’t been proven accurate, he isn’t an insider of any merit. He is basically backtracking his original unsubstantiated rumors.

Could be true. I’m more interested in the games, like pretty much everyone else. TV, apps and other gimmicks come last.

Im just having mixed feelings about this conference, i hope someone would have the video available on youtube so that i may just grab it. Or would there be a page giving direct feed to this?

Illumiroom looks like it would be way too distracting to concentrate on the actual videogame I am actually playing.

Also, they only show it working for first-person games like Borderlands and Portal. How would it work with a side-scroller or an RPG?

FPSs already give me simulation sickness if the FOV isn’t wide enough, something like this would probably give me epileptic seizures. :p

IllumiRoom wouldn’t even work in my living room, there isn’t a wall behind my TV.

There’s too many chances for it not being able to work in most people’s rooms, just like Kinect was horrible with space management.

Microsoft didn’t do Illumiroom first it was a British guy who created the product and showed a video of it back in 2006. MS probably paid the guy a Fuckload of money in the Millions.

can’t they ever show on XBOX vids something more than FPS, and racing oh wait that’s what they do best.

  • RedWolfe

I’m gonna steer slightly away from the negativity of the rest of the comments and say that this actually looks pretty neat as a novelty feature and could prove to be an nice supplement to an immersive gaming experience.

However, the practicality of this application (lighting conditions being the biggest concern) along with MS really dropping the ball in terms of software during the 360’s final years and shifting their focus a little too much away from the “gaming” aspect leaves me cautious about their foray into next-gen.

That said, I’m always excited for hardware/software reveals and am looking forward to what they show off at tomorrow’s event.

I still get the feeling that PS4 will be the console to catch on faster than Xbox 720.

just work on your exclusives MS!

I don’t know why do I careless about that is just lllumiroom what good can that do?

  • Kurisu Makise

Illumiroom looks pretty interesting, especially if it can use some steroscopic stuff, that’d add a fun twist on things.

Another thing I couldn’t care less about. I have a window behind my TV and no coffee table to sit it on. Looks like one of those things that is fun for about five minutes but soon grows old, anyway.

  • AdamBoy64

    Another useless fad. Great.

  • Akira_Tenshi

Another gimmick but this is one I could buy into. It’s fun and I think it adds more to a game than playing in 3D.
