Rumor: All PlayStation 4 games to support remote play

Minus those that use PlayStation 4's new camera.

All PlayStation 4 games will be mandated to support PS Vita remote play, a “trusted PlayStation 4 developer source with a proven track record for accuracy” told Digital Foundry.

The only exception are games that utilize PlayStation 4’s bundled stereoscopic camera.

Remote play allows users to stream PlayStation 4 games off the TV screen and onto their PS Vita. In February, we saw PlayStation 4 platformer Knack (pictured) demonstrate this capability. The feature itself, however, is nothing new, as a small selection of PlayStation 3 games already support remote play on PSP.

Awesome, it seems the vita is here to stay.

Sort of proves to me vita is dead if its nothing more than a ps4 accessory afterthought

      • shogunknight

Not surprising, it should prove dead to anyone not interested in it in the first place.

        • Carlos Luis Ayala

Freedom Wars and all the other exclusives object to that statement

          • shogunknight

Yep, its the interest that matters

      • jujubee88

If this is death, than lawd take me now! Cause I’m in VITA heaven! :D

    • jujubee88

It seems like a wise move, seeing as how PS4 has the hardware capacity and Sony really would like to push the image of Playstation as one whole ecosystem going forward.

  • Shadow

Didn’t they announce this in February?

    • Elvick

I guess the “mandate” (like the one for trophies) is the rumor.

If it’s defaulted into the system’s OS, then most would just leave it there anyway. So it doesn’t seem like a big deal if it is mandated.

  • OverlordZetta

This might be the one thing that makes me want one of these things at launch. I could use more Vita games.

  • Zackasaur

This is wonderful news, as both the PS4 and PS Vita are obviously must-have platforms. I’ll enjoy this tethering between the devices.

However, didn’t they confirm this on stage in February?

    • Zackasaur

I suppose it’s new that PlayStation Eye games won’t have to have remote play, but that was pretty guaranteed to happen.

      • jujubee88

This is the first time I hear an exec say remote play ablity needs to be check boxed for every PS4 game (again, unless PS Eye is in it).

Before, it was more vague about the process. Though, we did know the hardware does have special chips and an OS centered around remote play.

I enjoyed Remote Play on the PSP – when it worked – so this is great news. Er, a great rumor, rather.

  • Tyler James Sherwood

Nice. I really wish it worked the other way as well

    • jujubee88

The server-to-client relationship is something only PS4’s guts can handle. Well, over wifi anyways.

A super I/O framework could be built to make VITA do video through a cable that plugs into PS4 that allows you to play your VITA on a big screen. Like this,

      • Tyler James Sherwood

kinda figure that. Oh well one can dreams XD

  • kuusou yume

    I love my Vita OMG!

I really hope this drives more people to buy it and have it gain more developer support. It really is an great handheld.

  • Kurisu Makise

These are the types of standards I’d like to see implemented. Leave no game behind (less it uses the camera), Off-TV play for everyone!

  • tubers

    The more important questions remain..

All, day one? After release of the PS4 game, can we instantly Remote Play?

    aaannd.. input LAG.

Yoshida’s response several months ago, “I’ll be sad if it didn’t work day one”.. still gives me that taste of little confidence with RP.

    • jujubee88

With Gaikai encoding and dedicated chipsets for streaming, the last thing you need to be worrying about is lag. That’ll be fine.

Whether game design is improved or made more sucky on remote play is the main issue/question now.

  • Raiu

So this makes the rumor confirmed then…

  • Tetsu

Now let’s hope that PS1, PS2 and PS3 cloud streaming will work on remote play as well.

  • PrinceHeir

    pretty cool!
