Multiplayer action game coming to PS Vita in 2014.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced Freedom Wars, previously teased as “Panopticon,” a multiplayer action game coming to PS Vita in 2014.

The game is set in the near future, where the world is in ruin and humans no longer live in the outside world. Mankind has constructed cities called “Panopticon,” where it is able to survive. However, with resources drying up, the cities are in constant friction to obtain the research required to live in a severe environment.

In order to keep civilians under control, most humans are sentenced to a million years of imprisonment. These “criminals” are forced to become war “volunteers,” and must help “recapture” civilians, taken by giant monsters called “Abductors,” to earn their freedom.

Freedom Wars will allow up to eight people to play in co-op and competitive multiplayer via ad-hoc and Wi-Fi. It will also use PS Vita’s GPS and Near functionality.

Visit the game’s official website here. Watch a new trailer below.

I imagine killing enemies lowers your sentence, like a EXP system that counts down instead of up.

    • MasterSensei

As cool as that sounds unless the enemies give 1 exp it’s not going to take long…

    • Bobby Jennings

Not a bad idea at all if I might add. :)

  • Azoz

    Looks like God Eater .

    • Always No. 9

      Sure does.

    Looks interesting.

  • Carlos Luis Ayala

Nooooooo I wanted it to be a PS4 game :/

    • sherimae1324

      sorry for you… ^_^

    • Budgiecat

Why so many downvotes. I demand these cowardly downvoters to show themselves!

  • Hikaru Lighthalzen

    seems good
    make me remembered psycho pass

    PSVita… Meh…

  • http://twitter.com/ChestnutBowl Chestnut Bowl

It’s about time Sony announced another Vita exclusive. Really looking forward to this one.

It’s just nice to see Japan Studio making a Japanese looking game. It being 8 Player Co-op and Competitive action game for PS Vita, just makes it that much sweeter.

  • Samuel Roman

Looks and sounds pretty good. Hopefully it plays good opposed to most MonHun clones. Would like another reason to get a Vita other than Ys.

    • Van Sora

The only good hunting game so far is soul sacrifice, all the ether suck, even monhun

  • Elvick

Super happy it’s on PS Vita. :D

    • Adol Christin

Same here, wish it was a RPG though.

      • Elvick

Me too… but, if it at least has a story to it (like SS did) then I’ll be okay with it.

My main issue with MH type games is that they have little to no story. And I like some motivation in what I’m doing.

        • Adol Christin

Me too. Reading about each monster and their sad fate in SS was really nice.

          • Elvick

Hopefully some day, these interesting announcements will end up being regular action RPGs.

I would have preferred that, but may as well make the best of what we have for now. So… *crosses fingers for story*

            • Adol Christin

I would like SS to branch out into other genres.

  • Sevyne

    Lookin good so far.

  • Adol Christin

Ever since Monster Hunter went to Nintendo, Sony are really trying hard to establish their own monster hunting/farming game. This make me think that Monster Hunter will stay Nintendo exclusive (as far as portables go anyway) this generation.

    • Hating Ass Nigga

Imo alot of these MH clones have actually been better than the original,I think the only reason MH is so popular is because it’s been around so long and on multiple systems.

God Eater and Soul Sacrifice were easily better games than MH and I’m sure their sequels will take a dump on MH also.

      • BigDix

Hey, so you gonna finish those sour grapes?

      • Adol Christin

Game A better than game B comes down to personal taste. I do agree with you that God Eater and SS are better games, but that doesn’t change the fact MH is a huge system seller in Japan. And that probably won’t change for a while. It certainly gives Nintendo a huge boost in Japan (not like they need it).

  • Zackasaur

    I’m glad it’s a PS Vita game!

  • Watahashi

I just noticed the blond girl in the white coat and brown tights doesn’t have one of those thorn whip things, and it looks like there’s more than one of her in the background. Mass-produced cyborg assistant?

    • MasterSensei

I don’t think she could be a cyborg because she had the numbers on her head so she could actually be a clone or something

      • Watahashi

Are you sure? I don’t remember seeing any numbers over her head. She was the one who had her arm cut off in the trailer revealing robotic parts, and could see other people’s numbers because of her eyes.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/PixelPolishHD PixelPolish

She’s a robotic assistant. They are simply called “Accessories”. You can find that on the official page soon.

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

I bet every players will have a blond girl as a AI companion in both single player and multiplayer… That second screenshot has more than 8 people in it…

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

Well, that’s certainly odd. I can’t exactly say I’m too impressed so far. It looks like a poor man’s God Eater 2 with some totally off-the-wall story.

I don’t really care for the name ‘Freedom Wars’ either. Sounds like some cheesy Flash game, lol.

    • Budgiecat

      Sounds like Famicom Wars

      • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

This seems like the kind of thing Nintendo would have too…

  • Always No. 9

To be honest…..I have high hopes for the game. If this is Sony’s way of telling Capcom and Nintendo to go Frrregruuckkgh themselves, so be it.

OFF-TOPIC: If……Capcom should ever decide to develop another game for the Vita……let it be a new Dragon’s Dogma. I love Monster Hunter, but I think it’s getting a little…..dull imo. I personally think Dragon’s Dogma just has more to offer (again, imo)…..#9

  • Raiyu

Can’t say I’m entirely excited, I’m getting really tired of these multiplayer action games. I’d really like a single player experience.

    • Budgiecat

      exxxxxxxxxaaaaaaaactly

    • tubers

Actually my hype crashed when I read 8 coop/competitive..

What could have been spent more for polish and PV for a single player (or at least just 4 co-op).. will be spread thin.

Need more info tho.. but yeah..

    • jujubee88

Are you kidding me? Gravity Rush and Uncharted already do this.

How many games (that are localized) are high caliber multiplayer games of this magnitude i.e. 8 player and GPS?

      C’mon son.

      • Raiyu

The fact of the matter is there are still too many of these multplayer action games. Whether or not its “high caliber” doesn’t really matter. Gravity Rush and Uncharted are already a year old, which I’ve already beaten.

I just want more single player RPGs, which we’re not getting many of on the Vita…until Ys Celceta comes out anyway.

  • dasombrero

I don’t mind that there’s more competition in this genre. Monster Hunter’s had the crown now for awhile and as long as others are trying to emulate and/or innovate on it; it can only mean good things for the players. Now that the next monster hunting game isn’t actually monster hunter I find that very amusing.

I have to admit that monhon has the least satisfying single player experience of the monster hunting genre; I’ve always preferred Phantasy Star Portable/Online for hunting. Currently playing Soul Sacrifice and that game is quite good as well. Can’t blame people for comparing this game to God Eater either.

    • Budgiecat

Phantasy Star Online started it first! I don’t get why Monhun get’s all the glory. I remember playing that game online on my Sega Dreamcast via dial up hooking up to free NetZero! And getting killed a lot. Surprisingly, looking back now, I don’t remember any lag….

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

PSO did start the formula. Monster Hunter sorta brought it back and made it popular again I suppose.

        • tubers

Like COD = likely the face of FPS to most current gen players on the planet.

  • artemisthemp

Looking forward to seen some Gameplay from this game.

  • Shaun Huseman

Im definitely liking the sound of the story. Gonna keep an eye on this one.

  • Fango

looks almost exactly like Gods Eater 2

  • Eclipse

Nice, I was hoping that this would be on the Vita.

It’s obviously way too early to tell what it’ll play like, but it really does kind of remind me of God Eater…and while that’s not a bad thing, I just hope it does enough to differentiate itself from God Eater, because that’s not a series that’s easy to compete against in Japan.

  • ddsfan2

Not into hunting games at all, but it looks compelling. Kind of like if DDS were turned into one… Hope it lives up to the hype.

It seems like a waste of a promising story for a gameplay-oriented multi-player non-RPG, though.
