System Shock 2 is on Steam. Release sale puts it at $7 USD; after May 17th it’ll return to its price point of $10 USD. It’s also available on GoG.com for $10 USD.

EDIT EDIT: The Steam version apparently uses NewDark 2.42, which might mean that any compatibility problems I’ve warned about below might not actually apply. Source: http://steamcommunity.com/app/238210/discussions/0/828938532713030111/

From what it seems, the Steam version of the game is *apparently* not easily moddable, or at least requires you to jump through a few hoops to get it to be. PURCHASE WITH CAUTION! I am not sure how well it would run, since I view the following mods as practically essential to enjoying the game on modern hardware. Personally, I would recommend the GoG.com version. I have no experience with the Steam version and as such I don’t know how well it runs or how it works, or whether it’s been given some modern capabilities to run properly on Win7. The game *is* old.

Friendly advice for someone who’s never played this game before: Given that the game is fairly old and not optimized for modern Windows, you’ll want to use these mods for the best experience:

SS2 Tool, which allows the game to actually run properly:

    http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4141.0

SHTUP, which gives the game high-resolution textures:

    http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=22.0

The systemshock.org forums (fan-operated, formerly Strange Bedfellows from what I recall) might be getting hammered by traffic right now because of SS2’s newfound availability. If the pages are loading slowly, be a bit patient.

More details on the technical problems with the Steam version’s mod compatibility:

Cant stop counting the days left for microsofts reveal, sony E3 conference and nintendos elite games. And Call of Duty pre orders soaring just by seeing the boxart?? wow!
Oh, it was nice activision to put Black ops 2 multiplayer for free on steam (1 day left just so you know). Marvel heroes and sanctum are also available for free download on steam right now

I’ve been playing Soul Sacrifice a lot recently. Currently 30 mag / 20 life, ran into my first challenging boss last night, the ai died and most of my offerings were depleted. I got hit hard and popped my Black Rite , was sweatin bullets running as it went off and said oh shit I won at the end

    Good stuff

    • Kickersu18

Me too. Game is very good and the high bosses are very challenging

    • Sevyne

I’ve been completely hooked on the game myself. Just wait until you hit the Avalon Pacts where you are fighting multiple bosses at the same time. Some of those are going to have you raging so hard lol.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Nice, i’ll be sure to level up lots more. I think I tried one online last night, wasn’t doing much damage so I had to quit

    • Elvick

I played for 65 or so hours with mostly no breaks for other games (tried Zombie Tycoon 2 though from PS+).

Got the platinum. Very satisfied with it. Currently at 1/99 (life/magic), I’ll probably end up going back to 40/60 so I can continue to play online and have fun. That worked pretty well for me. I don’t think being 1/99 will be fun to play online, but I haven’t really tried any real pacts with it yet. So who knows? I will miss the /90 costume you get though. It is SEXY. Half tempted to go to 90 life and see if/what a costume would look like there. Not sure if you can pick the outfit after de-leveling, since it forces that costume on you and won’t let you change…

      here’s a picture of it; http://i.imgur.com/rVPda6i.jpg

Definitely going to keep playing it though, but I want to finish up Resistance 3 finally. Having some problems with it though. You don’t realize how regenerating health kills your skills until you play a FPS with health.

  • DesmaX

aaaand, I just brough Tits SC HD

    God damn it

    • Kobracon

      SC = Soul Calibur?

      • DesmaX

Trails in the Sky Second Chapter

        • MosquitoLemon

nice, too bad we didn’t get the second chapter on psp _-

        • Kobracon

Oooooh….did you realise that Trails in the Sky spelt ‘TITS”? Thats what caught me off guard…..

        • Kobracon

Ooooooh……you do realise that you spelt Tits right? I realise thats ‘Trails in the Sky’ but it also spells ‘tits’ XD

    • Tetsu

      Why ‘god damn it’?

      • DesmaX

Because I don’t even know japanese

  • Tac-Mex

I have a question and i am not trolling

Is Final Fantasy Versus XIII or XV is gonna be a Sony exclusive?

I mean, Square-Enix had losses, they need money ASAP.

Do you think that Versus XIII is gonna be exclusive or going multiplatform?

    • shogunknight

sony did say they would aid in the production of a final fantasy for the ps3 or ps4, but im not sure XV would be exclusive, it may be versus XIII. it would actually be nice to see a seperate rpg series for the ps3/4/vita (like type-0 series)

      • Azuardo

Obviously we don’t know yet, but I’m thinking Versus XIII will be renamed XV. I do expect it to be a PS4 exclusive, too. We’ll see at E3 I guess! I would love for Sony to help bring Type-0 over to the West, though!

  • http://www.facebook.com/micheal.scott.315 Micheal Scott

Man The Last of Us has yet said anything on it MP
i just hope the do something new like AC,ME3,and GoW
they add a new way to play MP so i hope they dont go
    the easy route

    • DesmaX

I think drop-in, drop-out coop is obligatory, but I don’t think it will be anything more than that. To be honest I would be surprised if it had Competitive Multiplayer

      • Solomon_Kano

They already said it’s not co-op.

        http://m.ign.com/wikis/the-last-of-us/Multiplayer

        • DesmaX

          Well, that’s interessing.

But still, coop would be cool

      • http://www.facebook.com/micheal.scott.315 Micheal Scott

Yhea drop-in and out coop would be nice, but they said no coop of this game.
so my hope went down there

    • xMCXx

      I’m guessing it’s a Hunter-Hunted-Mode.
Some groups play as survivors and some as zombies.
I can imagine that being pretty cool if the survivors don’t have much ammo and as a clicker zombie you are basically blind and can only “see” through noise.
At least I hope they make it like this! :D

      • http://www.facebook.com/micheal.scott.315 Micheal Scott

See thats would be nice a mixes of Left for Dead take but more survival theme to it.
Or they can make it a FFA(Free For All) you play as a survivor or zombie/survivor have to make it to a safe house or something and zombie just kill but survivor can work together or kill each other for supplies.
but im just giving a new way to do thing with their world

  • Azuardo

Finished my second Mass Effect Trilogy run this week. Next time, I need to do a FemShep run! I also need to record a Mass Effect special podcast for Cubed3, which should be fun.

Not sure what to play next, though… I still need to finish House of the Dead Overkill, Deus Ex HR and Enslaved, in particular.

    • Kobracon

Hey I’m doing a femShep run right now :D

Her VA does a really good job.

      • Azuardo

Nice! Looking forward to giving her a go eventually then!

  • PrinceHeir
    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Oh wow you got the original of Odin’s Sphere, how much did that cost?

Saya no Uta looks like a VN, how is it?

      • PrinceHeir

bought that last year from an amazon 3rd party and according to his description brand new “Black Label” so i got that for $32(which is a STEAL)

someone is selling at amazon right now, black label brand new by eknightmedia

i bought a lot of games from him so he’s trust worthy :)

it is a Visual Novel with a horror atmosphere and all.

you make choices and go along a path.

the death scenes aren’t that brutal(IMO) compare to what a lot of people are saying online.

there are rape scenes, so it might creep you out a little bit.

i already seen ALOT on the net, so it’s not that bad in my perspective.

HOWEVER it’s the Music that makes it creepier for the scenes.

they really managed to capture on how to make a scary and horror theme game.

and this is why i think Horror needs to emphasize on music than graphics.

the game is short, but man playing it for the first time around 1AM with headphones on is sooo freaking good!!!!!

we need more horror games like this!!!!!!

        • DichaTesoro

Odin Sphere with the black label is worth something then? I pre-ordered it and picked it up the day I got it. It’s still in great condition…doubt I’d ever sell it though. It’s such a good game and is just so pretty!

          • PrinceHeir

yes love the black label games :D

this is why i think the US has better condition than japan.

japan just after a year a game is released and it’s already in the “Best Hits” ugly yellow stripe case ughh

      • LordKaiser

It is rare? I still got mine from day 1 and it’s 1 of the game that would never leave the shelf.

    • Eclipse

Nice! Is this your first time playing Saya no Uta? It’s a complete masterpiece from Urobutcher, and it’s one of my all-time favorite VNs.

      • PrinceHeir

        nope :D

i played the translated version and finished it last January 2013.

        amazing game!!!!

it’s not the scenes that creep me out, but it was the music.

every line i feel hesitant to push the space button since i don’t know what will happen next.

and yes this is a amazing experience, while short it’s definitely a game people need to experience if they want some horror.

me too, definitely one of my favorites of ALL time.

im gonna start the Steins:Gate series soon this summer :)

heard it was even better than Chaos;Head so that’s a plus ^^

        • Eclipse

I agree, it really is an incredible experience.

And yes, the music truly was breathtaking. I thought that ZIZZ STUDIO did an absolutely fantastic job at really enhancing the atmosphere of the game.

If you’ve enjoyed Chaos;Head, then you’ll definitely love Steins;Gate. I preferred Chaos;Head (It’s my favorite VN), but I’m in the minority! XD

          • PrinceHeir

ohh so the people that did the music was “ZIZZ STUDIO” huh?

            will check them out :)

for me the reason why i love Steins;Gate so far is that the art is just mesmerizing.

it’s pure gold(literally) and for some reason stands out of the rest.

Chaos;Head is definitely excellent and one of the longest VN games i’ve ever played.

multiple routes is a nice thing :)

    • z_merquise

Man, you are really a collector!

So have you already played Grimgrimoire? The game is really fun plus the story is good. Also Vanillaware artwork!

      • PrinceHeir

yup i love games to death :)

gonna play it in the summer :D

        Vanillaware goodness this summer!!!!!!!

      • Kobracon

One of the best endings I have ever seen. Never laughed so hard XD

  • Revorse

Been catching up on my Tokusatsu and playing through Mass Effect Trilogy. Currently on 3. It’s been a pretty fun series so far. Looking forward to the ending that everyone hated.

    • Azuardo

Ohh, this is your first run through the ME Trilogy? I just finished my 2nd run this week :) My fave series this gen, no question! The ending won’t change that fact for me :)

      • Revorse

I’m really liking it. It’s definitely a really nice blend of RPGs (my favorite genre) and third person shooter(becoming my second favorite genre)

    • xMCXx

They ARE pretty fun, but if you know the ending to 3 you don’t really want to play it. xD
At least the ending to 2 was awesome.

      • Revorse

Was the ending really that bad? I know it pissed people off but was it really THAT bad?

        • Azuardo

I think it’s best to just wait for yourself to see it. You’re probably unlikely to come back and say you thought it was good, however.

        • Kobracon

It just fell short of everyone’s expectations. It BARELY lived up to what the designers themselves said it would be. Its as if they either lied to our faces or could not finish it in time and refuse to admit that. If you are already going in expecting a bad ending, it won’t feel that bad to you.

        • xMCXx

It felt like a punch in the face.
I’m guessing the writers watched too much Evangelion.

  • Skerj

    Can’t.Stop.Playing.Dark.Arisen.

I really need to so I can play Soul Sacrifice.

  • bloodiOS

I know I shouldn’t have gotten started on Shingeki no Kyojin, now I just can’t wait to see the next episode… even though I’ve already read the manga (yeah, the show is that good.)

Man, quite a few shows with nice OP and ED theme this season, Shingeki no Kyojin and Devil Survivor 2 The Animation, for example, stood at the top my list.

    • xMCXx

      I know, right?
      Though, I prefer the anime.
The manga has some major flaws IMHO.

    • Tetsu

Exactly! The show is the most talked about thing right now, super popular, and it looks really cool. Which is why i’ve opted to not watch it till there’s alot more episodes, but its VERY hard not to watch them, just sitting there on Crunchy Roll taunting me!

  • sherimae1324

just some info guys, regarding that amazing big vita title that has been teased ^_^

    • DesmaX

      Who is he?

      • sherimae1324

        scee senior manager ^_^
        shahid ahmad

        • DesmaX

          Oh, cool.

  • sherimae1324

    ummm here’s another one ^_^

  • new_tradition

I recently listened to the Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney 3DS game soundtrack, and omg.

    It. Is. Amazing.

It’s made want the game to come out in English even more. Really hope Nintendo publishes this ^^

    ***

In other 3DS news, I finally got Fire Emblem Awakening. Never played an FE game before, but I’ve been told this 3DS game is pretty stand alone. Alright, cool.

I’m still sucking pretty badly at it though, lol. I’m honestly confused about how to proceed in this game. I mean, I’m just at chapter 4 and I’m getting continuous game overs. I don’t see any areas to grind at, and I don’t understand any of the Wireless Features D:

Any tips for the obvious n00b? >3>

    • Tetsu

Just looked up the composers. Oh damn, it’s gotta be good. Tomohito Noshiura worked on it.

      • new_tradition

He did such an awesome job arranging the Ace Attorney themes <3

      • new_tradition

He did such an awesome job arranging the Ace Attorney tracks ♥

  • PrinceHeir

so after seeing playing Deadly Premonition Director’s Cut and really got immersed in the town of Greenvale.

i even got to memorized which place i need to go, milk barn is for grocerries, swery65 for bar, galaxy terror for another bar etc.

it made me think “wow it’s been a long time since i played a open world/ended game like this”

now i want to get back to the genre, played AC2 immensely back in 2009/20010 and i was really fatigued with the series constant releases.

Brotherhood was the peak of the series.

so i may ask what is your favorite open world/ended games and what other games are you looking forward to the genre?

for me im just waiting for Yakuza 5 so that i could buy 3,4, and Dead Souls along with it in one go(yes i should be ashamed i didn’t buy these day 1)

Shenmue 3 with more open ended options and more emphasize on one location interactions(like Greenvale in Deadly Premonition) and not how many locations you can go. i want to learn the towns, people, what they do and etc.

Saints Row IV and Just Cause 2 for their wackiness and sheer fun and “no holds bar” style. Just Cause 3 is gonna be big since they’ll definitely improve the controls, even bigger world as well as multiplayer(hopefully)

even though i haven’t played a Saints Row game, i heard the customization rivals the Soul Calibur Series :)

Sleeping Dogs looks cool with a Hong Kong setting, but for some reason there’s something missing about the game.

same was Watch Dogs, they really haven’t shown a lot of the free roaming aspect of the game.

finally for some reason Rockstar Games haven’t impress me this generation.

Grand Theft Auto IV is definitely one of the most OVERRATED games of all time.

i see all 10s everywhere and that game doesn’t even have the fun of the old games.

LA Noire, while not made by Rockstar(they helped with the programming) is not fun at all.

i haven’t tried Red Dead Redemption yet, it looks like one of their most refine games this generation.

the problem with Rockstar games is with their over dramatic story telling this generation.

what happened to the crazy fun they did from 3 and Vice City??

Yakuza and Shenmue series showed us how to make an excellent story with open ended style of play.

i hope next generation(PS4, Nextbox) will allow us to take the open world the next level.

seeing Saints Row crazy fun style and Just Cause 2 multiplayer with tons of people roaming around in one giant sandbox looks fun as hell!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU8VOXyOo6M

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNbTqqjmuC4

and i want more of that in next gen!!

    TL:DR

we need more open world games that emphasize on crazy and sheer fun rather than trying to be realistic as possible.

    • adhesive

No doubt my favorite open world game is Fallout: New Vegas. I really don’t care for open world games(especially RPGs), but Fallout: New Vegas managed to have a really interesting story and lore, and its writing was a breath of fresh air from the RPGs that I’ve been playing at the time. The western but not “yee-haw lets have us a hoe down pardner” stereotypical setting also really drew me in.

I’m honestly not looking forward to any open world game at all. I like nonlinear games like Dark Souls, but open world is overkill, and the rest of the game seems to suffer from it, story & gameplay and all.

      • PrinceHeir

        oh cool :D

well that’s the beauty of multiplayer in Just Cause 2(PC)

the amount you can do there is amazing, your literally playing on a sandbox :)

no need to worry about story or anything, just refine the gameplay, bigger areas, as well as tons of weapons and vehicles and you have a recipe for success :D

        • adhesive

That game has been on my wishlist for the longest, but all the videos I’ve seen of it make it look amazing. It seems like it was designed around sandbox gameplay and not just added in because some random developer in a meeting said “let’s add open world; bitches love open world”.

    • Kobracon

When I think about a whacky and fun open world game I always go back to Prototype and inFamous. I’m a comic book fan and just being able to play a free-roam area with super powers to wreak havoc is just SO fun.

      • PrinceHeir

oh i havent check any of that yet :D

are you excited for Second Son?

        • Kobracon

Yes and no. The ending of inFamous 2 (the good one at least) ended quite nicely. I need to see what’s happening in Second Son. Is it a worthy successor or a quick brand cash-in.

      • MosquitoLemon

I love infamous because it has that comic book feel, and has strong parallels to the Spiderman 2 console game.

edit – which IMO was the best open world game, save for maybe Yakuza if we consider that open world

        • Kobracon

Hell YEAH Spider-man 2 The Movie The Game! Love that to DEATH. Screw the missions, just let me SWING! Another one I loved was the predecessor to Prototype; Hulk Ultimate Destruction on the PS2. That was fun as balls!

          • MosquitoLemon

I’ve always heard about it (Hulk), but never got to play, sounds great.

            • Kobracon

Yeah it was. Its biggest selling was how Hulk could ‘weaponize’ various objects into weapons. Like say a car, he tears it in two and uses it as metal boxing gloves. Or he flattens a bus to use as shield or surf board.

You can catch missiles before they hit you and throw it back. There are some novelty weaponizations as well like using a giant novelty bowling ball from a bowling alley sign to bowl enemies. I loved how insane the game and from the very same guys who brought us Prototype.

              • MosquitoLemon

Yeah, I’ve never heard of prototype, but that sounds awesome.

                • Kobracon

Seriously? Theres already 2 of them. Both on the PS3 and 360. The company sadly closed down and we’ll never see a Prototype 3 though…

                  • MosquitoLemon

Nope, never hit my radar. I only got a PS3 last thanksgiving and haven’t really browsed for anything I didn’t already know exists. Seems interesting..

    • Elvick

Gravity Rush. I know the open world stuff is a bit limited, but its just so much fun to move around. <3

I tend to only like open world games, when they have some 'hook'. Like, Gravity Rush with the gravity shifting. inFamous with the powers. I really enjoyed The Amazing Spiderman, decent game, but moving around the city is super fun. I played a trial from PS+ of Prototype and thought it was super fun too, but have yet to pick that game up.

Things like GTA, just don't appeal much to me. I guess when I want to be a 'regular' person, with some guns. I want a more directed game out of it. Like Uncharted, or most FPS. Though, Watch_Dogs looks really interesting and the hacking looks like it'll be up my alley so I'll definitely be checking it out!

I find the first AC a bit repetitive, but in general I think I can get into the open world in that series. I really enjoyed Liberation, and have the Ezio Trilogy for when I go back and finish AC1 for the story and move on from it.

But yeah, if there are some powers or some kind of special 'hook' then the aspect of open world is so much more interesting to me. Just driving around, maybe eventually getting a helicopter or something… that just doesn't scream, "fun" to me. When I'm running around a huge city, I want to be doing it with fun things. :3

OH, Crackdown is quite fun as well. Not the best game ever, but I like it. xD

      /rambling

      • PrinceHeir

        same!!!!!!

i don’t like plain old boring overworld.

i want something i can do, be it gragvity, grappling hook something!!!!!

though i’ll probably save buying open world/ended ames till next gen.

Yakuza is probably the only series im willing to try for this gen.

        i want Shenmue 3!!!!!!!!

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I need to catch up on Yakuza. I played the first game on PlayStation 2 — Loved it! I need to play the second game soonish. I wonder if I should consider waiting for Sega to bring over the HD collection? Probably not…

          • PrinceHeir

yeah just lik,e Valkyria Chronicles 3, sega US is being an ass on not localizing Yakuza.

i hope if they localize Yakuza 5, they’ll bundle it with the HD Collection so we can play all Yakuza games on the PS3!

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

AC2 and Brotherhood = so much better than AC1.

Crackdown! I somehow forgot all about it. I have no idea what it is that kept me playing that game. Something about it just keeps you playing and wasting time doing silly stuff. It’s perplexing!

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I loved Sleeping Dogs. I’m planning to go back and play some of the DLC eventually. I need to play more of the Saints Row series, I have RDR but still haven’t found time for it. I’m personally very excited about Watch Dogs.

I think there are different types of open world games. Some are open to an extent, where others are open but more “focused” in some kind of way — usually story.

      • PrinceHeir

        cool :D

yeah, that’s why we have games like Yakuza and Shenmue series where it’s more focused on story and mechanics instead of just exploring every area of the game.

  • Kobracon

Wow 3 mecha shows this season. Valvrave the Liberator, Gargantia and Majestic Prince. Heres hoping at least ONE of them is a Super Robot.

    • Tetsu

I’m enjoying Gargantia alot, and it would be awesome to see that in Super Robot Wars, but my guess is that Valvrave would be the one to make it into the game seeing how it’s Bandai.

One week until Japan! Super hyped to be able to buy the Sengoku Basara triple pack in person, hahah!

Also this weekend my friend tried to convince me that SMT:Devil Summoner was first released in 1979 -___-

  • LordKaiser

I’m getting tired of Feminists bitching about every time in a video game shows fictional females in a way they don’t like. They have to dictate how women have to be portrayed in every game.

I’m talking about the youtube coments on Dragon’s Crown videos. It’s becoming extremely irritating!

I want the people on my fantasy games to be fictional and as far of reality as possible.

    • PrinceHeir

that’s insecure people for ya :P

      • MosquitoLemon

IMO ‘insecure’ is a bunch of guys who are afraid that these opinions are going to somehow change gaming as they know it. I mean do you seriously think this is going to affect anything, much less Japanese games? If anything, this would incite outspoken devs like Kamiya to make even more outlandish stuff.

        • PrinceHeir

it’s funny how none of these happened when it was first revealed in 2011.

then all of a sudden assholes and kotaku show up and made it one of their shittiest and try hard articles i have ever seen.

seriously? making controversy just for the sake of controversy and hits?

          fucking kotaku.

          • MosquitoLemon

Yeah, Kotaku is a joke, but remember, they don’t even care about Japanese games. Last I checked their site (like 2 years ago), all they did was post “Why Japanese devs suck” articles, and most of their readership would agree with them :

            • Revorse

Kinda odd, seeing as ‘otaku’ is in their sites name.

              • PrinceHeir

                yes such hypocrisy

            • PrinceHeir

it’s also funny how they post stuff like what’s trending in japan right now, but no games.

seriously kotaku sometimes are good with their leaks, but generally they fucking suck and you can see how try hard they can be in every article.

i don’t wanna link it here, but i read in neo gaf that there’s a article about kotaku bitching how there’s no women in one of the openings of a certain game(forgot which name)

SERIOUSLY? this is desperate at it’s finest

              • MosquitoLemon

I’d rather learn about a new game 2 days late than to sift through a pile of speculative garbage.

          • adhesive

The problem is the absence of Brian Crecente. Kotaku was pretty mediocre for the longest time, but it dropped to immediate shit as soon as Stephen Totilo took helm and hired Patricia Hernandez.

To be honest though, this has been a “problem” for a while now. Tumblr has had this “check your white/straight/male/cis privilege” for years now, and it has only become popular in the last year or two. The only thing this did for me was make me proud of Japan for not giving a shit what the armchair revolutionaries on tumblr and Kotaku say.

            • xMCXx

What am I even looking at?
How can anyone be offended by something out of Blood Dragon?!

            • MosquitoLemon

See, I’m not bothered by anyone pointing out privilege, inequality, harassment or anything. It has its place and can make for great discussion in the right venue… but Kotaku is not that place, and there shouldn’t be an office in a writing staff for “chief officer of being offended”. That’s op-ed stuff, not a daily feature.

Articles like that are linkbait for people who have too much time on their hands… consider the Gawker system of privileged (how ironic) posters, people singled out by the editors to have their comments appear before all others. In theory that’s not a bad system, but in reality some really pitiful person will alter the way they write just to appeal to whoever is in charge.

Again, this is part of why I liked Andriasang, and why I like Gematsu. Even if I don’t agree with a poster, 9 times out of 10 they are here because they like games, not because they want to politicize some crap. I’d bet anything that the people here who want Dragon’s Crown would play it regardless of the character designs. Vanillaware has kind of earned that reputation.

              • adhesive

There is a proper time and place for everything, but the problem is that even when it’s not obvious baiting for ad revenue, it’s whiny and ignorant. Look at the article I just posted, and look at this. In both cases, Patricia Hernandez understands nothing about what she is criticizing and makes comments based off of misinterpretations at best and willing ignorance at worst. Instead of focusing on the game as a whole, they focus on the minor aspects and make sweeping judgments based off of said aspects.

              • PrinceHeir

                AGREE!!

                Gematsu and Andriasang FTW!!!!!!!

    • Elvick

It’s funny to me. Since, it’s essentially the same as telling other woman how they can and can’t dress. Except, these woman aren’t even real. Huge waste of time in my opinion. And these same people probably never bat an eye when Kratos is half naked.

So much for female empowerment. Just pushing a personal opinion on everyone else. No better than anyone that else does it.

Reminds me of how some women will say things like, “men don’t want a woman who acts like a man”. It’s like… really? Firstly, the fact you determine certain acts as “manly” to begin with is stupid. (in the instance I’m thinking of, it was a female singer singing openly about just wanting to have sex with no strings) Secondly, women shouldn’t determine their actions based on whether it will attract a man. -.-

      tl;dr – It’s dumb.

    • z_merquise

It’s funny because Dragon’s Crown was revealed 2 years ago. 2 years. And they all just whine about it just recently. And yet they ignore what’s the game is really about nor do they took notice of other female characters who doesn’t have an exaggerated body like the Elf or every main female protagonists of past Vanillaware games.

It’s just they only want to pick on someone else to bully and go with it.

      What a bunch of dicktits.

      • shogunknight

Exactly, 2 years. It took them 2 years to space out and “think” of how offensive it is. They dont even know the difference between reality and fiction, its someones “art” for Gods sake

    • Luna Kazemaru

welcome to anita sarkeesian’s wet dream now we got white knights ect ect all crying about dumb shit to try and score ‘points’ with feminists and feminist proving they will forever complain about dumb shit and never get nothing done.

    • almostautumn

      lol modern feminism.

    • Kobracon

They just can’t seem to take a joke or just altogether MISS straight up parodies. Its like when Bayonetta came out and feminists raged about her personality…

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Since this is a big topic, I figured I’d chime in a (different) female perspective to things. I’ll just start with the fact that I’m failing to understand the feminist point of view myself, especially regarding the Amazon. The Amazon sports a type of body that most men don’t exactly lust after. All of her development is in the thighs/leg area, where women gain the most muscle. She even goes as far as to sacrifice breast shape as there’s muscle added to it. Quite frankly I see that as a liberating and “realistic” body type for a female warrior. Sure it’s exaggerated but that’s part of the art. The Fighter looks out of propotion, the wizard is rather effminate, the self-parody as you all mentioned is pretty evident.

As for the Sorceress, eh…is there not enough modest women in games already? Female Shephard looks attractive and tasteful, conforming to “acceptable” standards. In all honesty my biggest gripe about seeing complaints is the fact that limiting designers to one set body type is just stupid. Women come in all shapes and sizes. Some of us got really lucky and have bigger frames, bigger proportions, others smaller and more modest. There’s no one size fits all, so why can’t a wide range of sizes be depicted without playing the gender card? I don’t see guys going “Oh man, why are all men in Soap Operas all muscled out and blah blah blah”, obviously I have my eye candy, guys have theirs, and sometimes it’s just about portraying something different in general.

Ultimately opinions and critique like this are born from a victim mentality. It fails to take into consideration varying viewpoints and is quite frankly, a fair bit sexist to men.

      • MosquitoLemon

I think the regular girl point of view (as per my friends that are girls) is that strange proportions are gross. Like that is a constant complaint I hear from them.. if a girl is in proportion, like big with big breasts, small with small breasts, no popeye musculature, etc. they won’t say anything, but if someone walks out topheavy, it’s all, “OMG that’s gross, why did they draw her like that?” I don’t even think that’s a feminist standpoint as much as it is a “this looks weird” standpoint.

And then my girl-friends that are artists like, straight-up don’t draw females like that (nor do they do guys super-muscle…y). And they aren’t exclusively skinny small-breasted girls or anything, they just draw whatever they think looks normal.

        • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Drawing what’s normal isn’t a bad thing admittedly. It’s just trying to push people out of the comfort zone of “normal”. Many body types exist and they’re not gross, they’re perfectly healthy. That’s the perspective that has to change.

          • MosquitoLemon

Right, but nothing the Vanillaware guy has done is representative of ‘alternative’ body types, it’s just his art style. I don’t think these people care about variety, they just don’t want impossible out-of-proportion monsters that couldn’t exist without steroids, implants, or back-braces.

In fact, if you want ‘healthy’ body types, the woman who was talking shit to him has a lot of character art of women characters that don’t normally appear in games (well, outside of Suikoden, but god knows we’ll never get another one of those games). Honestly I think it sucks, but that’s mostly because I don’t like that western-style character art.

edit- oh and now that I think about it, the artist for Suikoden was a woman… and those games are actually pretty popular with girls… and anyone who likes awesome JRPGs, go figure.

            • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Personally, I don’t know if I’d use Suikoden as an example considering this: http://www.the-nextlevel.com/media/ps2/suikoden4/suikoden410.jpg

and while I’m sure George wasn’t looking to liberate the many alternative body types in his art, the Amazon does represent a type of body one could have given a lot of training/work, minus the exaggeration. But without said exaggeration, where’s the fun.

              • MosquitoLemon

That’s the other thing, you can have characters like Jeane when you’ve done 107 other unique characters. But there are literally games where every single female looks like her, albiet out of proportion with a shrunken head, always in suggestive positions and actually trying to do combat (as opposed to being an omnipresent magician).

And where’s the fun without the exaggeration? Hopefully in the gameplay, where it should be…

                • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Right and in the gameplay, at least in the case of the Amazon, her moves are geared towards her structure. Powerful kicks, flips, acrobatic might and power strikes with the axe. I feel she justifies herself just fine honestly and fun is not just had in your button inputs. It’s how the journey is presented, the setting, etc so yes, there’s fun to be had in things like that too.

                  • MosquitoLemon

I’d agree. And I mean, honestly, this is the guy’s art style. If I were to draw a comparison, it’d be to Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album cover… there were a lot of people who said the EXACT same thing George did about the Dragon’s Crown cover. Basically, here is an artist that you’ve never seen before, they do one shocking/striking thing, and everyone is up in arms about it without having seen anything of their other work- often confusing the artist for the product.

They should have just thrown whoever was complaining a copy of the Ikki Tousen brawler and been like, “ok, now which one do you think is a real problem?”

                    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Yep, that’s how I see it too =( Very apt example. Ah well, let us enjoy Dragon’s Crown together. The Beat em’ up genre needs to continue into the new age!

      • Kobracon

        An excellent post.

        • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

          Agreed.

        • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Thank you, it’s just silly to see those complaints because it makes women who do fall into body types outside of the norm uncomfortable with their bodies by those people with their “normal” body types.

Out of curiosity, what kind of music do y’all listen too?

I listen to mostly anything, though don’t tend to like country. I do like some of it though, but that tends to be more ‘middle of the line’ stuff without the heavy “twang” sound and more lends toward pop-country mixture.

I mostly listen to R&B and Pop though. Those genres are things I’m always in the mood for. While rock and metal I have to be in that mood. Same thing with video game music, or whatever Michael Buble and guys like him are considered. :/

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Anime and video game music, perfect for the gym

    • Azuardo

A bit of everything, but mostly trance/club/dance type music. Especially trance video game remixes for games like Final Fantasy.

    • DesmaX

Video Game Music. I dunno, I just kinda dislike lyrics in music (I can still like them, but…)

And, there’s always that one to match the mood I’m in

    • MosquitoLemon

Rap and R&B, but there is certain electronic stuff (esp. from videogames like Wangan Midnight MT) I listen to as well.

    • Raiyu

I listen to everything, except country and trance. I listen to anime and video music every once in a while, but not very often.

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Excellent topic of discussion Elvick. For me, I listen to everything but my preferences lean towards jazz/pop/R&B and rap from select artists (I’m slowly trying to inch back to old school rap 90’s and older cause I love the topics of politics/conspiracy and awareness in the older songs) along with independent rap, since I’ve got many friends in pursuit of music in that genre. Oh and I love soft rock and country but can only stomach select metal and other hard music, sadly.

Oh like DesmaX I actually love music that doesn’t have lyrics, aka instrumental pieces. I use music to write primarily and instrumental pieces focus on many aspects of music in relation to the listener. This is why it resonates so well with gamers and movie fans alike.

    • Charlottes Guardian

I tend to listen to whatever suits the mood at the time. Although i’m a huge post hardcore fan, I listen to folk, rock, some trance stuff. Even some rap, some just to laugh at because it is hilarious(insent lil wayne and 2 chainz) and some to chill out to and enjoy(insert sage francis) Oh and A LOT of video game music. And a lot of classical too actually…. I just like music xD

Oh, and for those who like rap and video game music, I would highly suggest Team Teamwork stuff, Like their Vinyl Fantasy 7 album and the Ocarina of Rhyme!

Heres a link to their website, trust me- you wont regret it :D

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Going to check out teamwork later. Thanks for the link.

I’m always down to check out video game music remixes and such.

    • Watahashi

I mostly prowl Soundcloud for remixes from Japanese DJs. Their music tends to lean more towards electronic and a little bit of disco or dubstep. Anime songs are pretty common, but their English stuff is great too. Other than that, the DJMax soundtracks have really great music as well. 3rd Coast are definitely my favorite artists. JC is my husbando. And Clazziquai is love.

      Some nice examples from Soundcloud:

DJ Max Clazziquai Edition soundtrack is on constant blast in my car. You should check out DJ Clazzi’s solo album Infant, if you haven’t already.

    • adhesive

Most of the stuff I listen to on a regular basis are “indie” or its variants, as vague of a genre as it is. Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples In Stereo, American Football, Bound Stems, Coconut Records, The Fratellis, OK Go, etc. I also listen to a lot of pop though, and boy bands are actually my guilty pleasure. I go listen to some Avenged Sevenfold/Atreyu/Disturbed just as a path down memory lane, because I just fell out of love with them after I stopped being a teenager. They’re still good of course, but I changed a lot.

    • PrinceHeir

for me mostly gaming and anime music nowadays :D

and some JROCK, JPOP, but i like techno as well like in Tekken Tag 2 and Metal Gear Rising Rock OST :)

      • MosquitoLemon

TTT2 isn’t bad, but ironically I changed the soundtrack to incorporate songs from Persona 3 and 4, hahaha (as well as songs from the original Tag). I love the customize screen song though.

        • PrinceHeir

and that’s the beauty of Tekken Tag 2 custom BGM :D

man i wish more companies take notes of this!!!

          especially in racing games :)

Anyone else watch raw anime to learn Japanese?

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Votes are stupid, I’m asking a question not an opinion

    • $18114340

I can’t imagine that it would help very much unless you already understand a little bit of Japanese. If anything, watching several different translations of the same content might help more.

I took Japanese during high school, so I still understand a little bit, but the hardest part about learning Japanese is in the vocabulary, I feel. This isn’t something that you can really help by using anime, in my opinion. People tend to stick to only the anime and Japanese music that they like, and these works tend to use similar vocabularies. Unless you play every game, watch every anime, and listen to a wide variety of Japanese music in different genres and time periods, you aren’t going to get the widest vocabulary that you can. There are also more nuanced aspects of the grammar that might be harder to pick up on unless you have a dictionary and can relate similar sounding words to each other.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I started learning watching raw anime and translating what I heard so I developed a good sense of listening. Can’t understand it all but it’s helpful for me

        • MosquitoLemon

The issue I have with anime is that nobody really speaks like that, so unless you’re planning on being a Japanese VA, I don’t find it to be very useful.

Playing videogames is really useful for vocabulary though (assuming you look up words you don’t know), and can teach you all sorts of grammar patterns.

          • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Nope it’s useful for vocabulary and different dialects

            • MosquitoLemon

Fair enough, but I never had any luck with it.

    • xMCXx

Nah, I watch subbed Anime to learn Japanese.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Most times the subs aren’t accurate

        • adhesive

They’re generally fine, it’s just not a perfect alternative to learning Japanese since translations leave out more subtle parts of the culture.

        • xMCXx

          Eh, not really. They’re fine.
And it’s good to learn certain stock phrases and words.
          At least phonetically.
You can’t learn Kanji and Kana like this, obviously. : P

          • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I learned kana already and teach myself Kanji without anime

    • almostautumn

No; it really is no more “educational” than just playing a game in Japanese, by which I mean pretty useless.
I get what you mean; listening comprehension, but that’s not really going to mean squat if you don’t know your particles and adjective/verb conjugations in the first place, not to mention a sizable vocabulary. In terms of anime/games, unless it’s something like Doraemon the vocab and sentence intelligence is simply far too complex to actually “take” anything away from. I mean, I suppose if you rewind the thing ten times to take away each and every word it could be good— but really that’s just a substanically larger amount of effort than just sticking with solid, professional language programs.

Best of luck to you though; definitely a tough language to nail down via accent & listening. And hey, if it’s working for you, right on!

Atelier fans, I have questions for you! First, has anyone completed Atelier Ayesha? I’ve done and seen the final ending along with character specific endings, which I’m harvesting in order to platinum the game. However, if you’ve been looking into Atelier Escha and Logy, the ending really paved the way for that game, like I feel that Ayesha fails to convey the tone of the world and is better looked at as a prologue to what craziness will be in Escha and Logy. Despite this shortcoming (something even the writers admitted in an interview) the systems were so good…I lost so much time on my first play through synthesizing, just cause there’s so many unique items and things to make however it was only now that I’ve got access to the hidden bosses and stuff that I see the complete integration of alchemy and combat. I’ve been struggling with Grand Dragon and its insaneness and only when I stared at the synthesis screen did I see the connection.

So with that in mind, compare/contrast Ayesha to Arland trilogy. I feel like going backwards is going to be painful. I’m most likely going to get Totori+ to start in the Arland series, followed by Meruru+ if that gets the stealth localization. Hoping for the best but I dunno, Ayesha’s really polished.

So I finally bought Ni No Kuni…..in japanese. Coz I found the bundle that comes with the Magician Handbook for dirt cheap and I have to say, that book is GORGEOUS. It looks, feels and SMELLS like an old magical book. And it helps that Level 5 puts furigana on their kanji and I can read…..slowly.

Everything was going fine in the game till ran into that little guy that follows the main character around. ARGH KANSAI DIALECT! Its so hard to catch what hes saying TT_TT

    • Elvick

So the DS version? I got stuck in that version. Overall feel the PS3 version is significantly better, and not just because I understood playing it. :p

Hopefully someone from the Gematsu staff will see it or someone will notify them to make an article since this definitely deserves attention.
