"Before we announce something, a rumor is just a rumor."

Tales series producer Hideo Baba has clarified rumors of a “Tales of Symphonia Perfect Edition” for PlayStation 3.

Speaking to JPGames.de, Baba said, “To be quite frank… I was at Expomanga in Spain last week and everyone was enjoying the event, and then I heard from fans ‘I heard rumors about a Tales of Symphonia Perfect Edition. Is that true?’ Actually, I was the one surprised by that! (laughs) That fan then said that it’s the 10th anniversary of Tales of Symphonia in Japan this year, and I just said that there might be something coming, as a celebration.”

He continued, “But it will be more like a ‘Tales of Café’ or an event at NamcoCon… but we actually have no plans yet, there are only ideas. We can’t really say anything before announcements are made and it’s always a bit surprising when people ask us about rumors like that. It would be best to just wait for new information [about Tales of Symphonia’s 10th anniversary]. Before we announce something, a rumor is just a rumor after all (laughs).”

There you have it. The next Tales game, or round of Tales games (whatever the case may be), are expected to be announced at the Tales of Festival on June 1 and 2.

Please be true. Also Vita version if possible :)

never, vita has two tales and never get localized !!

      • DyLaN

But if worse come to worst, the Vita isn’t region locked.

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Only if they actually localize said Vita version this time =P! Though honestly the festival isn’t too far now, so let’s wait and see.

    Wii-U Port maybe?

That thing is dying for a good RPG.

    • GetOffMy_Lawn

Monster Hunter Ultimate, Monolith X, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem… Plus, the exclusive rerelease of Earthbound, which a lot of people have not gotten the chance to play.
That being said, I would love this on Wii U, but only because I’m sentimental. =) Played it originally on a Nintendo console, would love to play it on a Nintendo console again.

  • Alos88

I hope they found the suggestion to be intersting enough to pursue at some point at least.

  • Bobby Jennings

Baba plays too many games…and this is what I like about him. We’ll just have to see in the coming weeks.

  • KnifeAndFork

Instead of laughing he should be like “wait that’s a good idea….lemme get on that”

  • Gilgamesh2025

A HD remaster of ToS would be absolutely nonsensical. I’d rather have a full remake of it for the Wii U!

    • http://twitter.com/Alos88 Alos88

I don’t get how that is any less “nonsensical”, or how either one is nonsensical for that matter.

      • Gilgamesh2025

Please see my reply to ‘almostautumn’.

    • almostautumn

The game isn’t that old, and the game is complete. An HD remaster fits best.

Most Tales games are pretty complete, if you ask me. Maybe Phantasia and Destiny could use a total remake, but everything after is pretty solid. Just finished Tales of Eternia on PSP the other month; still just as gorgeous as ever.

      • Gilgamesh2025

Tales of Symphonia is a great game, no question, but in my opinion, some things should be definitely changed or improved. For example, the “EX Skill” system wasn’t really good, because you were dependent on the limited number of several gems to apply/change your skills; I didn’t like that at all. Also the battle system could be improved: I’d rather have a nice battle system as Tales of the Abyss and ToS: DotNW had, where I was able to move freely on the battlefield instead of just running back and forth. And what about Raine? Does she not deserve more offensive Artes than ‘Photon’ and the choice between ‘Ray’ and ‘Holy Lance’? Would it not be better, to use the Mystic Arte(s) of all characters? Just some of my ideas!

You say the game isn’t very old, and it’s complete, so why do you think does ToS need an HD remaster anyway?

        • bloodiOS

When we’re talking about old games we’re talking about games that, without completely rebuilding the graphics from scratch, would look absolutely inadequate on the HD screen. Symphonia isn’t very old in the respect that even with a simple upscale, then perhaps replacing the compromised textures with the original hi-res ones, and its graphics would still very much be acceptable (its art direction also plays a major role in retaining the relevancy of its graphics.) Now look at FFVII. You can replace its textures with high-res ones all you want, and yet, its models, its feel and everything else will still seem outdated and old.

          • Gilgamesh2025

I know what you mean, but a full remake of ToS would still be nice since Nintendo is also going to full remake TLoZ: Wind Waker for Wii U despite the fact that the game doesn’t need a remake at all! :P

            • bloodiOS

Ah, but Zelda is one of Nintendo’s flagship series. The game is a first-party title, so it’s only logical that Nintendo would pour money into making it look as good as possible. Exclusives are, after all, the only thing that still makes the Wii U relevant.

Now, Bamco, on the hand, seems to be the kind that as long that it’s adequate, HD-remastering would always be chosen over full remake, since it is easier and more profitable to pump out. Now I personally also want a proper remake of the game, everybody does, but it just doesn’t seem likely with Bamco.

              • Gilgamesh2025

True! When you’re right, you’re right. xD

      • AdamBoy64

        The game is complete. Agreed.

The visuals are pretty woeful though. For me, it makes the game difficult to play.
As was mentioned earlier, if they did a remaster, perhaps just adding the features of the PS2 release of Symphonia would be great.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

HD remake for the Vectrex… I can dream

  • refrain

I wonder if they’d announce a new tales mothership game in the next Tales of Festival. Or maybe Tales of the Tempest R.

  • Carlos Luis Ayala

    PS4 announcement anyone :-)

  • Claude

I have a feeling it’s a 3DS port simply because 3DS has been steamrolling Japan and the only Tales game it’s gotten is a port of Abyss…

    • fireemblembeast

      T_T please no…I don’t want to have to buy a Japanese 3DS…PS3 isn’t region-locked…

    • Silver Citizen

They’ve already said they’re sticking to Sony systems for now.

      • Claude

Well that’s what they *said* and then both Vita games bombed. This series bounces around so much that it’s only a matter of time.

        • Elvick

The series needs to NOT bounce around if they want it to ever be a success.

And lest we forget that both Vita games are versions of games that Japan got AGES ago. The only one arguably worth getting from their perspective was Hearts R, since it had the most effort (going 2D to 3D after all, plus more additions). Innocence R was basically an up-port with some new things.

The only thing that would have made sense to do was localize the damn games because the rest of the world NEVER got them at all.

But Namco is moronic so can’t have them making smart decisions. I mean they’d just be swept away with the flood of JRPGs on the Vita worldwide… oh wait.

          • Bec66

So it’s stupid to localize a game for a low selling console with a somewhat niche audience?
I’m not saying no one would have bought them but you have to remember that Namco is much bigger here in America than say Atlus, they can’t lose money localizing a game which already has a few disadvantages selling here in America, especially when you consider the audience for the Tales series and the low sales for the Vita. I’m willing to bet that even with proper advertising the games might not sell the best here in America.

            • Elvick

              That made no sense.

Larger publishers are unreasonably stupid with localizations and what they want from them. They want it to sell to the moon with them putting in zero effort to push it.

Then they cry when it tanks. “Why didn’t our game that we released in limited quantities, that we put no advertising for, and that is in a series that can’t retain a large fanbase due to our total shit support of it sell four billion copies?”

Atlus and other niche publishers know how to release games like Tales and make it their sole purpose to do so.

Perhaps if idiots like Namco Bandai figured out how they are able to do so, they’d be able to please their fanbase. And perhaps, actually make a mark with Tales.

There is no reason Tales shouldn’t be more popular than it is. The only one holding it back is Namco Bandai.

There are hardy any JRPGs on the system. I’ve seen plenty of people say they’d buy a Vita for Tales. Plenty of people I know with Vitas want JRPGs.

The fact is, you don’t know if you don’t try. And, the fact that Tales fans have never seen either of these games is more reason to buy a Vita for them if they were localized.

              • Bec66

Okay so maybe you have a point. Namco should try to push Tales a bit harder so maybe it can actually reach higher sales.
However the JRPG audience has shrunk considerably so it’s hard to market a product like the Tales series.

  • fireemblembeast

Okay, Baba-san, I’m waiting for the Festival with all of my might!

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

In the past, we’ve usually gotten Tales announcements (or teases) a little before Tales Fest in Jump. I’m hoping next week we get the announcement before Saturday in the magazine. :3
