Enders Project stopped, team disbanded

Zone of the Enders sequel not moving forward.

Development on the Enders Project, announced last year, has come to a halt, Kojima Productions boss Hideo Kojima revealed on the latest Hideradio broadcast.

The stop comes in response to the sub-par Zone of the Enders HD Collection, which is receiving a PlayStation 3 patch sometime in the future.

According to Kojima, the project’s producer has been cut, and the development team disbanded. In its current state, the project is not moving forward.

However, not all hope is lost. Kojima asks again if the sequel is something users would like to play. Hopefully user opinion will play its role.

    I want ZOE3 more than MGS5.

    • Anime10121

Cant really say I want one more than the other, as I’m equally excited about both, but I WILL tell Kojima that, as we’re guaranteed more Metal Gear, but with ZotE being a more “niche” series, It needs the support!

    • DrForbidden

^This. Not to say that MGS5 wouldn’t be great, but the world definitely needs more ZoE than yet another MGS game at the moment.

  • HeatPhoenix

Just got into ZOE 1, it’s alright, but doesn’t seem like anything special. Did it just not pick up yet in the game (probably 1/5th in) or does it only get good with the sequel?

    • DesmaX

Yeah, the first one isn’t anything special. The Second game is the really good one

    • Anime10121

Hey I liked the first, but the second is like this good
Whilst the second is this good. And the fact that it gets EVEN BETTER after you complete it and get to start at the beginning with the best version of Jehuty, priceless!

      • Warboss Aohd

fer everythin’ else deres master card.

  • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

He already has the answer to his question. Of course people still want it. While they may have botched the HD Edition for ZoE 1 and 2, that doesn’t mean we suddenly don’t want ZoE 3.

  • https://twitter.com/GaleGlory89 KiQun

    It’s hurt to hear this.

  • Anime10121

First Megaman Legends 3, and now Zone of the Enders 3 :(

Curse of the 3’s in two of of my top series :(

    • bloodiOS

Listening to you suddenly make me feel rather pessimistic at the future of Hitokui no Ouwashi TRIco (a.k.a. The Last Guardian).

      • Anime10121

        Or Kingdom Hearts 3 :(
Which game will claim the third spot in tears of the threequels? Only time will tell (hopefully it wont).

        • Warboss Aohd

doubt it will be Kingdom Hearts 3, dat franchise sellz too well, both in Japan an’ da West.

  • Adol Christin

    ZOE HD is that bad???

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Sales were bad, i personally didn’t like it due to no Japanese audio but they disbanded the team due to sales of the HD collection

  • xMCXx

    Yes, we fucking want it!
The HD collection didn’t sell well because you screwed up!

  • ギャビン

I would like to see this more than MGS5 (not that I don’t want MGS5, just would have like to have this first) as well, the art that they showed last year looked incredible and defiantly would like to see Kojima do something different. ZOE2 is 10 years old this year… So it’s not like we havent been patient…

  • Gaara D.Dragon

I am gonna be the dick and say “Serves Konami right”

I am sorry but they tried to cash an easy buck with a crappy HD port, instead of trying to respectfully revive as old franchise.

    I am disappointed Konami.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

By this logic, we should never play a new Silent Hill again because the HD collection was terrible. I really don’t see how them screwing up the ZoE HD Edition had anything to do with ZoE 3. I mean, I guess I could understand if they were wanting to revitalize the franchise with the release of the HD Edition before ZoE 3 came out, but even then… A. People have wanted ZoE 3 way before the HD Edition was even considered. B. By the time ZoE 3 finally would have come out, people would have forgot about the HD Edition anyway.

      • DrForbidden

So you don’t see the connection between a crappy HD-release not selling, and them cancelling production of a new game in the franchise because they think it won’t sell enough to be profitable? Consumers tend to stay away from overly broken/glitchy products. This is not a genuine reflection of how well it would sell if it wasn’t broken/glitchy, and should not be used as such.

And really, your example of Silent Hill is completely wrong. We are not choosing to never play a ZoE game again if one is ever made because the HD-release was poor. Kojima is cancelling the new game in development. Consumers have no say in the matter except to ask him not to do so, and he reserves the right not to listen.

        • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

No, I don’t. Had the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection been just as bad at the ZoE HD Collection, MGS5 would have still came out anyway. It’s an HD collection, man. It’s not even a main entry in the IP, so I don’t see the relation.

Think of it as a bonus. A nice idea someone had to get an improved version of the older games out for newer gamers to enjoy. I don’t see it having an impact on the series as a whole at all though. Also, yes, he does have the right to not listen, but he obviously DOES want to listen because he already asked us if we still want ZoE 3, even though honestly?

He has known the answer all along. I think he just likes trolling his fans and getting them hyped. Don’t worry. They may say it has been “canned”, but I can assure you this game will certainly come out at some point in the future.

Kojima has done some crazy things in his time, but he wouldn’t pass on making this become a reality. My guess is, he’s just wanting to focus on MGS5 for now.

          • DrForbidden

“No, I don’t. Had the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection been just as bad at the ZoE HD Collection, MGS5 would have still came out anyway. It’s an HD collection, man. It’s not even a main entry in the IP, so I don’t see the relation.”

And that is precisely why Konami and Kojima basing their cancellation of ZoE3 on sales of the HD collection, especially a substandard one that hasn’t even been patched, is idiotic. It should not even be a consideration in the scheme of things.

            • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I think you missed my point. I’m saying, even if the MGS HD Collection had all these framerate issues and even bombed horribly in sales, it wouldn’t have mattered. MGS5 would still be made, regardless. I don’t understand why the sales of the ZoE HD Collection would make them reconsider releasing ZoE 3.

DmC still came out after the HD Collection, Sengoku Basara 4 is coming out even after the HD Collection, and many other titles will continue to be released in their respective IPs, so why were the sales for this HD Collection so important?

Surely it’s not a money issue and they just don’t have enough funds for the project now because they were counting on the HD Collection to help pave the way for ZoE 3. I’d think they have more than enough money to fund this project, honestly.

              • DrForbidden

What you’re saying is exactly my point. The article implies that ZoE3 development was cancelled due to poor reception of the HD collection. I’m jut pointing out that that’s really stupid on Konami’s part.

  • NoOneInParticular

Effort is rewarded with sales. You guys put no effort into freshening up the outsourced ZOE HD (which honestly only exists because of MGS HD because ZOE could never stand on its own), so this doesn’t come as a surprise. Either take the time to treat ZOE as its own identity and not MGS’s taboo baby brother, or put it to rest and stop jerking the fans around.

    • rockman29

Interesting way to think about it, wouldn’t have thought about that.

I agree with you, but also think we should fault Kojima and KojiPro and Konami for not doing enough for ZOE. I question, are they really trying? Or will they just depend on MGS forever? What else is Konami doing really to help themselves.

ZOE HD is a mistake. To put it simply. They just…. put it out there…. with only one leg.

If Konami wants to do market research, they need to purchase the research and get a company to do it or do it themselves. Using ZOE HD and releasing it with one-leg broken was a bad idea and was setting up ZOE 3 for failure, IMO.

I don’t know what Konami is doing, but it reeks of CAPCOM disengagement from fans right now…

  • PrinceHeir

while it saddens me to see this, i think i want Kojima himself leading this.

ever since it was announced he was only overseeing the project, i was wary about what would become of this game.

same thing happened to Metal Gear Solid Rising, but Platinum Games saves the day!!!!

i do however like ancient civilization setting in the future.

also a Platinum Game Zone of the Enders would be badfreakingass!!!!!!

imagine Vanquish with mechs and cave bullet style in 60FPS and 1080p!!!

Inaba and Kamiya san would direct and produce, while kojima would write the script and the voices are his team(Akio Otsuka, Kikou Inoue etc)

a platinum game Zone of the Enders would be the best course of action!!!!!!!

  • Vlad Tepesdracula

I’m pissed to say the least. Yes, the HD collection was sub-par, especially on PS3, but taking a look at things from a very objective viewpoint, a ZoE3 is what should have been made from the very, very beginning.

The HD collection failed because it was handed over to a group that couldn’t work it. Perhaps if Bluepoint had taken care of it at a later date instead of High Voltage, things would have been different and there would have been less market saturation.

  • bloodiOS

Konami wanted us to look forward to Zone of The Enders 3 so they decided give us the HD collection. However, they were too lazy to put in any real effort and too cheap to hire any competent team to properly handle the remastering process, so the whole thing stank. Konami couldn’t eat their fill, so now the project is scrapped and the whole team got shafted. Well played, Konami, well played!

Kojima-san, I’m counting on you to save the day.

  • Elvick

The frame rate drops I kept hearing about and the complete absence of the Vita version of the collection (the one I wanted) were the reasons I didn’t buy it.

I wanted to buy it, but they teased me with playing it on Vita. Then didn’t deliver that and on top of it didn’t make the PS3 option a very attractive one.

I’ll pick it up when that patch releases though.

  • http://chaosraiden.blogspot.com/ Chaos Raiden

At least he has the courage to tell the fans that the game is not being released at the moment, unlike Square Enix.

    • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

      >Zone of the Enders sequel not moving forward
      >Square Enix

      • AuroraXIII

Lol yeah. I don’t see any correlation this has to do with Square Enix either.

        • DrForbidden

There is no correlation. Chaos Raiden is just pointing out how, in his opinion, Konami is still a more forthcoming company than Square Enix.

          • https://www.youtube.com/user/GamingHeroTetsuya TetsuyaHikari

I still have no idea why that needed to be stated. He might as well have said:

“That sucks. Oh well… At least I still have bananas! I like bananas.”

            • DrForbidden

              That’s true.

But at least bananas are awesome… ;)

  • ddsfan2

I can’t say that I’m impressed at all with Konami (or Kojima Productions, or whoever called the shots on this one) for cancelling this project. They are relying on essentially one over-saturated franchise, whereas 15 years ago, they had dozens of amazing franchises. Don’t get me wrong, Metal Gear Solid has been consistently good to great, but I’d rather see more franchises out of their output, especially that honestly, I think that MGS4 was fairly conclusive.

I do plan on picking up the Zone of the Enders HD version at some point, (and was absolutely psyched about ZOE 3) but was turned off by the negative reception to the quality of the PS3 port, and was not encouraged by their prioritization of getting the port out quickly over waiting longer and fixing the bugs. I don’t necessarily blame the development team of the port, as they were probably given a shoestring budget and were probably rushed, but Konami really needs to do more quality control on their outsourced games, and ensure that the PS3 port, regardless of being hard to develop, is done properly (and doesn’t have any noticeable regressions relative to a last generation version of a game).

Beyond that, they need to have Kojima train more young developers on how to run large projects, because they need more new franchises that are actually good, or more new franchises, period. I’d love to see a new Policenauts type game on a handheld, or a low-to-medium budget Gradius type game from them, or a new low budget but fun game of the caliber of Castlevania, and internally, not from some western studio with a completely different style. If I wanted the latter, there are tons and tons of studios in the west that can provide those type of experiences.

All in all, I think Konami is just prioritizing profit beyond anything to do with games. I get that Zone of the Enders won’t sell millions of copies, but killing off every incentive for talented or creative people to stay at the company, or for me to buy their games makes them seem dead and soulless. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kojima leaves the company at some point, as well.

It truly saddens me to say all of this, because I consider Konami to be one of the greatest companies in the history of gaming, at least based on their prior portfolio. If someone told me this would happen in the 90’s, I would have called them crazy, but I guess that everything great comes to an end.

    • michel

Yess to Policenauts, but, honestly, Kojima shound create somehting entirely new…

    • Warboss Aohd

dey need ta return to Suikoden………an’ actually advertise it over seaz if dey do.

  • Derpazu

Just have Platinum salvage your crap again, Kojima.

  • Aiddon

Dear Buddha, Konami just seems to HATE any franchise that isn’t MGS at this point. It’s actually pretty impressive how bad Konami’s output has become.

    • Elvick

Maybe they’ll rebrand it Metal Gear Enders.

    • Warboss Aohd

poor Zone of Enders……..an’ Suikoden………an’ everythin’ else.

I will try to respond as calm and as sensible as possible:

    Dear Konami,

F****************************************CK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU (Shooting Vector Canon out of his mouth)

Quick Kojima-san! Ask FromSoftware for help! *runs*

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob-Obb/100001994017630 Jimmy Dean

    Release a rushed, cash-in port
    No one buys it
    End the series

For what it’s worth though, I don’t think we’ll be missing out on anything special. Kojima said he’d like to take ZOE3 in a realistic, Transformers-like direction. He’s already going crazy with the lens flare and blue/orange in MGS5, I think that’s plenty of wannabe-Hollywood action.

    • MogCakes

He wants to make ZoE realistic!? But the games’ charm comes from their being pure sci-fi fantasy :(

      • Vitor Hugo Oliveira Sousa

People misunderstand what he has in mind, when he said realistic people were think he would change all of the series visual identity. But what he really say was if the series was to achieve mainstream success it would have to let go the cell-shading (the filter than makes the game look like a anime), and embrace a more realistic graphical style.

I think he vision was something close to this fan-art of Anubis.

        • MogCakes

          That does look pretty awesome!

  • DeadInHell

I’m getting tired of Kojima continually shutting down and/or leaving promising projects to lesser studios. It’s been five years since MGS4, and all we’ve got to show for it is another damn PSP Metal Gear. I’m sure MGS5 will be worth playing, but it would behoove Kojima Productions to actually finish a non Metal Gear product some time.
