DICE and Visceral Games to produce new games.

With LucasArts closed, Disney has signed on Electronic Arts in a multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish worldwide new games based on the Star Wars franchise.

The agreement enables EA to develop new Star Wars games for a “core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres,” while Disney will still retain rights to develop games within the mobile, social, tablet, and online game categories.

According to EA, Battlefield developer DICE and Dead Space developer Visceral Games are set to produce new games in the space opera franchise.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise.”

Gibeau added, “The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

This is either really good, or really bad.

or as anotha said, “or both”.

  • DarthBrian

    Better than Activision at least.

    But still…ugh.

  • Adol Christin

This at least gives me hope for KOTOR 3 :)

    • uhawww

But TOR was supposed to be “KOTOR 3-10”
Yes, one of the game’s writers actually said this.

TOR bombed though, chances are they’re going to release KOTOR 3 next gen

        • Adol Christin

          I hope so :)

      • Adol Christin

        KOTOR 11 Then :P

  • Cry_Zero

That sounds great! DICE should make BATTLEFRONT 3!

Hope this can bring back Battlefront 3. Battlefield 3… Battlefront 3… it’s impossible not to make the comparison. Plus it would be glorious in Frostbite.

  • Claude

I guess that means no more Star Wars for Nintendo platforms.

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

How about reforming the 1313 team and finishing the game? That would be pretty cool in my opinion, EA.

  • https://twitter.com/Panda_castro Panda

As long as the games are like that in the video, I”ll be interested.

    • Solomon_Kano

This will never stop being impressive. It still blows my mind that this is what Free Radical had cooking in 2008. 5 years later and still nobody’s managed to do something of this scale, Star Wars or otherwise. They had this halfway into the gen and here, at the end, it’s still unmatched.

  • Zackasaur

    This sounds good!

  • bloodiOS

Star Wars: Battlefront III, developed by DICE and powered by the Frostbite 3. Oh, come on, pretty please~

  • http://twitter.com/GNPixie Lynx

Republic Commando 2 by DICE with the same voice actors and staff from the first game, please?

  • Aldridge517

    Yeah… This is bad.

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

and I will not buy any of them

  • FlameEmperor

    No….. W-Why…….? No…. No….. Just no….

  • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

All EA has shown this year is they’re good at laying people off

    • DrForbidden

Oh, come on, that is simply not true. They’ve succeeded remarkably at screwing up the release of Sim City with their incompetence and arrogance, thereby illustrating to the world that ‘always online’ is a terrible idea championed only by the morons of the development community. Give them credit for failing at THAT, at least.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Yeah i know i’m not being fair in my statement just sucks for all the people who lost their jobs because EA foresaw low sales next console gen

This means Nintendo systems won’t be getting a Star Wars game, shitty or good.

It also means microtransactions and other shady shit.

Disney, I can’t believe I actually defended you when you acquired the rights to Star Wars. Now you turn around and do this shit?

Enjoy the shit storm that is coming.

    • Solomon_Kano

Honestly, your defense of Disney should’ve died with Star Wars 1313, if anything.

  • 罪罰

If Visceral does some edgy/gory/dark TPS reminiscent to Shadows of the Empire I’d be willing to play it. Anyways, fuck EA.

  • Solomon_Kano

Also, is Bioware working on a new Star Wars game or was he just referring to TOR? If be was just talking TOR, then I hope Obsidian approaches EA with their RPG pitch as well. As for Visceral, they could probably resurrect 1313 if EA doesn’t get a hold of that team. If not that, they could make a pretty vicious Clone-era game.

Fuck EA’s policies and whatnot, yea, but I won’t deny that they published all of my favorite Star Wars game. Maybe a return will see us with some more of their caliber. I hope so, anyway.

  • bleach630

    R.I.P Star Wars.

  • Elvick

I don’t mind, this is probably leaning toward another game like Republic Commando. I mean, it’s a FPS, and it was awesome. Seems to fit in with what EA does. Plus, DICE… they make FPS… do it.

Which I am in full support of. That’s one of my favorite Star Wars games. Battlefront is up there as well.

As long as the games are good and they don’t do anything to turn me off from them, go for it.

Although… this could be bad. It’s never good for someone to have full control over a license like this. It’s crappy for sports games. Can’t see why it would be better for Star Wars in the long run. I mean, if EA is the only one able to put out SW games, then what’s stopping them from putting out shovelware constantly? We’d have no alternative, so any SW fan would be forced into it, or nothing at all. :/

    Hmm… I’ll wait and see.

    • Solomon_Kano

I get your feelings on EA having a monopoly on the license, but I’d like to hope that their past history with the brand gives us an indication of how they’ll treat it.

Even without that, I think it says something that they’re putting DICE and Visceral on the license. To me that’s a show of good faith that they’re taking this seriously, as opposed to calling, say… Black Box (NFS, Skate) and trying to make them pump out a SW game.

Putting the folks behind two of their most critically acclaimed IP (and commercially successful, in BF’s case) on the license says they’re at least trying to make something of their monopoly, unlike they’ve done with Madden prior. Or Activision’s done with James Bond (EA actually had a good run of that license under monopoly, back on PS2) and Marvel.

Or maybe that’s just me being optimistic. *shrugs*

      • Elvick

Well, that’s just for now. Who’s to tell if they’ll continue to give it to their talented development studios. The potential for abuse is there, and it’d be better if it weren’t.

I hope they remain steadfast. Probably be a few years before we know for sure.

While I’m confident EA will actually do fine with the brand, I’m more dissappointed with Disney for not trying to really utilize their brands in the gaming space on their own. Disney’s always dipping their toe in and then bouncing out and now that they have so much control of a wide range of IP, from Star Wars to Indiana Jones, Marvel, and their own IP; it’s just like…please take gaming as a medium more seriously. However, that’s not how Disney operates within the entertainment industry at large. My question about this exclusive use of the license, does it bar first party studios from then making their own Star Wars game?

    • FatlusFan

“While I’m confident EA will actually do fine with the brand […]”. Sorry, didn’t read the rest.
