Atlus and VanillaWare have released the final Japanese package art and art book cover for Dragon’s Crown.

Here’s a tiny look at how the package looks with the PlayStation branding (when Amazon Japan adds the high-res versions, we will update this post):

The art book will come included as a special favor with early purchases in Japan.

Dragon’s Crown is due out for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita on July 25 in Japan and August 6 in North America.

Update: The high-res versions are in. View the set at the gallery.

No clevage on the cover. Surprise.

    • AuroraXIII

That was my first thought as well.

    • Ritsujun

      The big “W” is there.

Studio probably scampered to use a different art after all the ridiculous net bashing for 2d boobs xD

    • miyamoto

      but still fantastic artwork!
Exaggeration and Emphasis is a time revered principle in art and design. All artists use it even in Japan. And George Kamitani has done this all in good balance and good taste.
This is my most awaited game.
Thanks for the publicity hater articles gave this niche game and fetching people’s opinion. So far gamers have stated their universal favorable opinion.
      Nuff said.

I’ll just repost what I said to another user who made the same general comment:
“Are you kidding me? This probably
took weeks to create, validate, confirm, and ready for print; it’s
virtually impossible for it to have been “censored” in response to
United States outcry, which would have close to no effect on the
      Japanese cover art anyway.

My apologies, I’m a little flustered, but that just seemed like a really blunt thing of you to say.”

Thats what we want, show us how it was done

  • z_merquise

More Vanillaware artwork is always good for me.

I wonder if they’ll use the same cover for the English release. Hoping they’ll include the artbook too. A Vanillaware artbook is something I really want to get.

  • XypherCode

Any updates for a pre-order bonus or artbook for the NA/EU release?

  • rockman29

If I buy the PS3 version I get the Vita version free??? I can’t remember. If so I’ll buy the PS3 version.

    • Elvick

      Nope. No cross buy.

  • Pekola

All of the boobs and the butts covered. Coincidence? To be honest, I think not. It seems all too perfectly censored.

…holy crap, there’s a hidden dragon in there. Very nice.

i agree, the US shitty controversy has NO bearing on this.

im interested on the US cover though, i can’t wait for more western bullshit journalists lap and lynch Dragon’s Crown to the ground.

i’ll be buying both version(both Limited Edition if there is one) just to spit on them.

i don’t even double dip nowadays unless it’s a game i really REALLY want.

        • Kobracon

The guy who started the controversy (the Kotaku guy I believe) has actually apologized and so has Kamitani apologized to him about the naked dwarf picture. They have reached an understanding.

Its just the followers now who have to calm the eff down….

          • http://shinsua.tumblr.com/ Shinsua

Artists in certain US game companies have also made some remarks, and they have been brought to light, poked at, and torn apart. Normally an apology is brought up, but who can really say that isn’t to be taken with a grain of salt? I’d like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but if you’re going to post something about an industry you’re directly involved in, you should probably stop, breathe, and review what you’ve written before you hit “submit.” There are consequences for every action, no matter how good willed you are.

            • Kobracon

Alas, you both have a point. Ah well. Nothing left to do now but to wait for the game and judge for ourselves.

          • Pekola

The damage is done. The poop is already smeared.

Sure Jason apologized, but he justified his remarks by deeming the work ‘problematic’ and implying it’s pedo-bait (I kid you not).

      • Pekola

It’s okay. I just don’t understand your outrage? It was just an observation. Pouncing on me like that wasn’t cool : /

I don’t see how it’s blunt to imply that the outrage somehow managed to reach the box art. Considering the boob outrage, it’s not an outlandish idea.

On the matter of creating art, they probably have a lot of artwork renders and they probably have enough assets to make 2-3 different covers. I’m not gonna pretend to know how long it takes to get the ok on game covers, though.

        • http://shinsua.tumblr.com/ Shinsua

My apologies, I made the comment after dealing with a lot of needless outcry regarding the Sorceress, so I basically just snapped, and I’m sorry that it was someone like you, who I have absolutely no previous experience with, that got targeted.

I won’t dismiss the idea that it could have been a possibility, but from experience with people who just create and sell art in general, I can come to a fairly certain conclusion that something like promotional artwork for a branded game on a national scale would have an extensive confirmation and print-readying process.

Kamitani’s stated that some promotional artwork he’s created goes unused, so it’s possible the same would go for other art assets, but I still fail to believe the artwork for the cover, in a nation that is relatively unrattled by Kotaku’s article and “social justice” Tumblr posts, would become questioned.

          • Pekola

Please don’t feel like you need to apologize. I was annoyed with the outrage too. Specially when it’s directed at Kamitani who has brought us such unique games.

It’s all so ridiculous. If there’s anything good that came from it, it was the Dwarves artwork basically confirming that there can be color changes.

    • DrForbidden

This is for Japan. They don’t care. Also, what Shinsua said is valid. It takes weeks, if not months, to create and finalise cover art.

  • LordKaiser

I’m getting it. I was starving for a game like this.

  • PrinceHeir

hope we get the artbook as well!!!

i also heard this will be dual audio(it’s vanillaware after all)

    can’t wait for this game!!!!

i’ll buy both Vita and PS3 games Day 1!!!!!!

  • Kobracon

Reminds me of Odin’s Sphere cover (Ah good times….). I’m glad the controversy is giving the game attention. As ppl see the trailer showing off the “OMG DOSE UNREAL TITS” and “OMG THOSE MUSCLES ON A WOMAN EW” they’ll see the awesome gameplay.

Also its really funny that ppl scream about the Sorc and Amazon and then you see the Elf and realise this guy is in complete control of his designs and Sorc and Amazon was DELIBERATE!
