Bethesda Japan has gone live with first story details and a list of key features for Tango Gameworks’ newly revealed survival horror game The Evil Within (or Psychobreak as it’s called in Japan) ahead of Monday’s IGN details story.

The game, which uses the latest version of the id Tech 5 engine, is detailed below.

Story

When Detective Sebastian and his partner rush to the scene of a gruesome mass murder, a mysterious, powerful force is lying in wait for them. Witnessing the killing of fellow police officers one after another, Sebastian is then attacked and loses consciousness. Waking up in a land where monsters are wandering about, Sebastian has to fight his way through a world of death and its close friend madness in order to understand what’s going on. Sebastian has to face his fears in order to survive on a journey to discover what lies in the shadows of that mysterious force.

Key Features

  • A Return to Pure Survival Horror: From the father of the survival horror genre, Shinji Mikami. He appears once again as the director of this game, one which makes your blood run cold, but heats you right back up. Players must survive on limited resources, experiencing that supreme match of action and horror, that indescribable terror. To survive in an afflicted world, your anxiety and nerves will be pushed to the edge.
  • Brutal Traps and Enemies with Puzzles: While struggling to survive, you’ll have to face indescribable terror, cruel traps, and sly mechanisms. Players can die in a trap all too easily, however, at times they can turn them against enemies.
  • In an Unstable World, Not All Horrors are in Plain Sight: The player is driven into a corner as the world distorts and warps according to mysterious and evil horrors. The scenery: hallways, walls, doors, rooms, buildings, and even nature, all transforming in real time based on the player’s actions. And the threats keep coming from all directions.
  • A Supernova of Horror: By setting one foot in this world weaved from lush backdrops, characters with personality, and a polished story, players will be sucked in, willing or unwilling, tension and anxiety rapidly mounting. When that fear is smashed and conquered, you can experience the bliss that can only be found in The Evil Within.

I like the Japanese name more.

Some interesting tidbits, but it still doesn’t mean much till it’s seen in action….

The japanese name is more original and straight tot he point.Same thing with biohazard. We always get the less interesting names :(

To be honest, while the Japanese names mention make sense, I just feel they lack impact. Take Resident Evil for a moment, initially they were going around mansions and such. A nice perfectly scary setting, named aptly. Biohazard doesn’t make you think horror, it brings your mind to a sci-fi type of deal instead. Psychobreak actually sounds closer to something horror based but it more feels like a crime drama/thriller, not unlike Silence of the Lambs so eh, I can see why they were renamed.

        • BigDix

‘Resident Evil’ may be less to the point — abstract even — but I do agree it’s an apt name in accord with the game’s atmosphere, more so than ‘Biohazard’. However, in the case of Psychobreak/The Evil Within, the former is more original, with a fantastic and strange sound. The latter just sounds like the title for the latest summer abortion of a western horror movie.

They do keep SAYING horror, horror, horror… So I don’t know about it being a crime thriller. If it is though, all the more cause for concern, name be damned.

        • Budgiecat

Let’s start a band and call it Psychobreak

        • xMCXx

The name “Resident Evil” stopped making sense with the second game, though. xD

        • Solomon_Kano

Rather than a crime drama, I keep picturing a lunch break where the character happens to run into some psychos. A good day gone wrong lol.

          • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Now imagine if the character was a Detective, Crime thriller =3! Though personally, I think the japanese title resonated as such with me because of Psych xD Regardless, the true reason for the switch in the west is pretty clear: Resident Evil – The Evil Within.

            • Solomon_Kano

Ha! I love Psych. But, yea, the logic behind the western title is immediately clear.

Fellow Psych lover right here. C’mon son!

  • CirnoTheStrongest

Now this…this looks like a horror game!
I’m a bit worried about the focus on combat, but it seems really promising!

  • Solomon_Kano

Holy crap, I’m excited for this. Survival horror has never really been my genre, but that trailer was very good and… well, it’s Mikami. Definitely getting this for PS4!

    • Budgiecat

“In an Unstable World, Not All Horrors are in Plain Sight: The player is driven into a corner as the world distorts and warps according to mysterious and evil horrors. You know how many times I had this idea for a horror movie or game for years now?

  • z_merquise

I’m now hyped for this game. Tango is starting to become a game developer I look forward to.

Nice. I’ve never liked puzzles in games, but the main being a detective seems pretty cool and I’m liking what I’ve seen so far. I can’t wait to see a gameplay trailer though. The live action one they showed got me pumped for this~

  • Rafi

Using id Tech 5 engine ?, like Rage in 2011 ?….

Oh boy, I fear for the worst regarding texture pop-in issues. Even on PC, where the whole game is installed to faster HDDs than consoles, the pop-in was still irritating. I hope id fixed those issues by now. Texture pop-in distracts from enjoying the game.

This game sounds better and better. I am glad that Shinji Mikami returns to develop new games.

  • Anime10121

This sounds amazing! Unfortunately I can’t watch the teaser until I get home, as my phones acting wonky as all hell. But from what I’ve been reading, this may be the first survival horror game since RE3 that ill actually enjoy ( I liked 4 but I don’t really classify that game as survival horror, as its the first game to kinda deviate into an action theme).

  • Budgiecat

Psychobreak sounds so much cooler. Evil Within is generic

    • bloodiOS

I agree. It also shares the same name as Mewtwo’s signature move, which makes it sound even more badass.

    • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

It’s another Biohazard – Resident Evil situation -_-
I prefer “Biohazard” to “Resident Evil”, same here: Psychobreak sounds badass, whereas TEW kinda pales in comparison :P

    looks insane!

  • AdachiTohru

    WiiU :(

    • xMCXx

The Wii U will share the same fate as the Wii.

      • AdachiTohru

        Sad but certainly true :/

    • http://www.facebook.com/erico316ecw Eric Pena

the wiiu is the same as the wii barelyany third party support

    • bloodiOS

Please, I’m surprised that it’s even available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 to begin with. More blatant textures pop-in, that’s for sure…

  • Ace

    No~ Don’t open… That door!

  • disqus_FH40bq8c12

Soooooo it’s basically a Silent Hill rip off?

  • Oterou

Resident Evil = Evil Within (the names are kinda the same).

  • Charlie

I really hope this game is as scary as it sounds. Please Mikami, make it SCARY.

  • ogre

i WILL be……the master of unlocking, once again!

  • PrinceHeir

the japanese game site labels it Psycho Break.

kinda like Resident Evil – Biohazard.

Deadly Premonition Director’s Cut, and now this!!!!!!!!

the game reminds me of Shadows of the Damned with Shinji Mikami directing instead of Massimo Guarini.

“Players must survive on limited resources, experiencing that supreme match of action and horror, that indescribable terror. To survive in an afflicted world, your anxiety and nerves will be pushed to the edge.”

    hell yeah Mikami!!!!!!!

the father of survival horror is back!!!!!!!!!
