Moon Phase system dropped, no links to previous games.

New details on Shin Megami Tensei IV have come out of this weekend’s Nico Nico Super Conference. Excerpts include over 50 hours of gameplay, paid downloadable content, a dropped Moon Phase system, and no links to previous games.

Find the full summary below.

  • There’s no direct connection to the previous three Shin Megami Tensei games, but the background music arrangement holds some deeper ties to the previous titles.
  • The world of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey‘s is unrelated to Shin Megami Tensei IV‘s, but the Black Samurai’s suit might be related, and a connection with the first Shin Megami Tensei is also possible.
  • It takes over 50 hours to complete the game.
  • Plans for paid downloadable content will be revealed at a later date.
  • Lucifer will make an appearance, but Louis Cyphre’s appearance is unclear.
  • The three Jack Brothers will make an appearance and a new Jack Frost will be introduced.
  • There is an option to switch character voices on and off.
  • Demon Fusion and conversation, etc. rewards the player with experience points.
  • The Macca Beam will appear. But this time, there is no Moon Phase System.
  • A brutally difficult mode might be included.
  • The release date for the original soundtrack is still undecided.
  • V-Jump will publish a Shin Megami Tensei IV-based comic, with someone named Minadan leading.

Thanks, Re: Gigen.

  • GODDUKEMONEXA

NOOOOOOOOOOO next? PERSONA 5 with DLCs? NOOOOOO

    • 罪罰

Probably some dumb costumes, nothing special.

      • DesmaX

They already said that will be “Worthy content”

    • MosquitoLemon

Surely you can scrounge up $10 or so between the 4+ years it takes them to release each game.

    • HarryHodd

As long as it’s on console I don’t care.

  • Haku_Luvs_You

Stupid question. Has Atlus ever had DLC for its games before? If this is their first I guess I’m curious to see what they do. (Please more dungeons or story, not outfits!)

    • 罪罰

      Yes.
King of Fighters XIII, Persona 4 Arena, Persona 2 the ones I remember right now, missions and costumes for the most part.

      • Justin Graham

To be fair, KOFXIII was only published by Atlus USA. It isn’t an Atlus-developed title.

    • MosquitoLemon

If it’s paid DLC, I’ll bet it’s an extra campaign/dungeon.

  • PrinceHeir

    50-100 hours O___O

    amazing!!!!

some fan also ask if they could add a female protagonist in the next game.

after playing Digital Devil Saga, would love to have more female leads :)

as for DLC, it sounds like it might be more dungeons or other areas and such.

    can’t wait for this!!!!!!!!

    • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

      it’s “over 50 hours” my friend, not 50-100 :P
female protagonists tend to be more interesting and better written. I’d welcome that change.

      • PrinceHeir

some of the developers in the interview mention it took them 60 and even 100 hours :P

and yes, more female protagonist please!!!

        • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

yea, yea. always trust devs’ estimates on campaign length :P

          • PrinceHeir

well i guess it was hard on them as well XD

            and oh i didn’t downvote you(i upvote you) so there’s that :P

            • http://gematsu.com/author/ro-kurorai 浪黒雷 (Roland Gmyrek)

i must be really pissed to downvote anybody, happens rather rarely ;)

’tis just a general statement that sometimes devs tend to make their games seem longer than they actually are

    • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

I average 120 on solid JRPGS

      • PrinceHeir

        great!!!!!

    • raymk

I’d be for a female Lead. Loving what I’m hearing so far about this game.

    • Zackasaur

When I read “50 hours,” I immediately said to my girlfriend, “Welp, this game will take me over 100 hours.”

I’ve learnt that, the way I play, I always get at least double the estimate on a single playthrough.

  • DarthBrian

So it’s $50 AND it has DLC. lol

    • zangkief

it’s also 50+ hours AND an SMT. lol

    • Haku_Luvs_You

Are you still going on about this?

    • Karysonson

oh no 10 more dollars?!even though its a special edition?!

and now post release support?!FUCK THIS GAME!

      really now……

      • Zackasaur

“Post release support” isn’t inherently good. It depends on what kind of support, especially since this “support” comes at a price. lol

Mind you, I already pre-ordered, so I don’t want to sound hateful. I’m just waiting to see exactly what this DLC is like and what it costs.

      • DarthBrian

It’s not a special edition. The first pressing gets bonus goodies. After the first pressing is over, the goodies are going away and the game is still going to cost $50. The eShop version is also $50 and you don’t get bonus goodies with it.

        • zangkief

and yet its still only $50 for a 50+ hour game; more than I can say about most games coming out in 2013. also, try replying to me next time rather than downvoting, it doesn’t get anything done when you get flustered and only choose to reply to certain people. thanks bb ;)!

          • DarthBrian

There are plenty of 50+ hour games that cost less than $50.
            Especially on a handheld device.

            • zangkief

fair enough, but they also announced localization for it before it was even released in Japan, that’s more than I could say about my most-played handheld game (3U). i don’t get what about this is “lol” worthy though, a speedy localization, long-winded game, and bonus goodies all only for $50 sound good. I don’t know about you, but i’m not holding my breath for good DLC, but I /do/ trust Yamai when he says “i know what you’re thinking, and we’ll make it worth it”, considering he was a large factor in fixing Nocturne. at the very least, you could hold on to your snarky comments until we have more information. we all know how backlash and poor sales can lower retail prices. not sure what to say about digital releases though, considering not even the $40 or even $30 are worth it, let alone for the space on the SD card it takes up

EDIT: I also thought I’d point out how there’s hardly “plenty” of 50+ hour games that aren’t including a NG+ run, and that there’s also $40 games with 15 hours+ of gameplay. i’d prefer 50+ for $50 over the former.

              • DarthBrian

                There are plenty.

Fire Emblem Awakening, every Pokemon game (though YMMV on that one), Kingdom Hearts (BBS and DDD) off the top of my head.

                • zangkief

fire emblem awakening? 50+ hours without DLC? without a second run? ehhh, that’s kinda far-fetched. kinda dancing around the point anyway. if you’re going to post a comment, you should be ready to actually have a discussion, not focus in on the most irrelevant part.

                  • DarthBrian

Well, I do tend to take my time with games. I’ve put in over 200 hours on Deus Ex:HR already on two playthroughs. Not a handheld, but just an example. :p

                    • zangkief

in that case, shouldn’t SMT IV take you a good 70+ hours, maybe more? i kinda do the same, but unfortunately i found it hard to push 35 hours in Awakening

                    • DarthBrian

Probably. Still not the point. It’s a handheld game which doesn’t have the same production values of a console game i.e. it shouldn’t be $50. It doesn’t even look as good as other handheld games. It’s not hard to squeeze in a lot of content when your visuals look 15 years old.

                    • zangkief

uhhh, as someone who’s been gaming for nearly 19 years, i can guarantee no games looked like this. the fact that you even said that makes me think you’re underage. i think this conversation is done.

                    • DarthBrian

It barely looks like Nocturne is my point. I’m probably twice your age, FYI. My first game console was Atari Super Pong in 1976.

    • Zackasaur

Atlus is definitely hoping to rake in some cash with this one.

  • Locksus

Is it necessary to have played the previous entries in order to understand this game? I’ve never played any SMT games and now that I’m finally getting a 3DS of my own, I’d love to get this.

    • adhesive

It’s not necessary at all. The only thing you need to know is that it has an alignment system of sorts and that the battle system is essentially hardcore demon pokemon.

      • Locksus

Thanks for the reply:) I’ll be sure to get this when it releases

  • Justin Graham

“There’s no direct connection to the previous three Shin Megami Tensei games, but the background music arrangement holds some deeper ties to the previous titles.
The world of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey‘s is unrelated to Shin Megami Tensei IV‘s, but the Black Samurai’s suit might be related, and a connection with the first Shin Megami Tensei is also possible.”

These points contradict each other. There either is or isn’t a connection previous titles. There can’t be both.

    • $18114340

I think they probably mean that SMTIV is not a direct continuation of any other game in the series. There’s always a connection, and that’s Lucifer.

  • Zackasaur

    All good news….

Except that the paid DLC makes me wary. We’ll see what they do.

  • Eclipse

I’m a bit saddened about the Moon Phase system being dropped…I really enjoyed that feature back in Nocturne. Anyway, I’m pleased with everything else, and I’ll be looking forward to seeing what kind of DLC they’ll have to offer.

    • Zackasaur

I’m kind of glad, really. The Moon Phase system is neat, but it just makes things more complicated than they need to be. I can see why you like it, though. For me, this just means I have less to worry about. It’s less stressful this way.

  • Ashton Anchors

So, a game that was so glorious, went downwards. Looks worse than the new Phoenix Wright *and he’s not even supposed to look sick* paid DLC…..did some people transfered from capcom recently? Higher than average base price for uh….what?

NOCTURNE is my No1 most favorite game of all times and yet, i don’t think i want to have anything to do with this. Atlus slowly becoming the new Capcom

    • HeatPhoenix

Gotta say, I wish I didn’t agree with you. Nocturne Maniax was like 80 dollar worth of game for 50. And now they’re trying to sell 30 worth for 50 + DLC (which will total AT LEAST 30, we can be sure)

      • raymk

Since when are 3ds games 50 dollars? At least here in the states they aren’t. Also they haven’t said what the DLC will be or the price and your jumping the gun.

        • HeatPhoenix

For one, SMT 4 = 50 dollars. For two, I don’t hate the game. I hate paid DLC for numerous reasons. One of them being longevity of what I pay for.

      • Haku_Luvs_You

So you’ve played it? How the hell is this 30 dollars worth of game. Let me guess, it’s the 2d sprites! Also please tell me what the DLC is. You know the game is only worth 30, so use your time machine to tell me what the DLC is going to be.

    • raymk

Atlus becoming the new capcom when almost all games have DLC content? Having DLC doesn’t automatically make you capcom and capcom was hated for having on disc DLC content not for just having DLC. Its like the intelligence of the gaming community has taken a hit off of one company.

      • Ashton Anchors

It’s alright to pay for a couple of characters i mean…..Street Fighter 4 has finally been released! It certainly won’t hurt. Yeah right. You’re a bit narrow minded, if it’s not stopped here it’s going to spread. There is absolutely no point for SMT to have any sort of dlc.
And no offense but, if you won’t take your head out of Atlus’es a$$ it will squeeze you hard later on haha.

        • raymk

SF4 doesn’t have download characters either, it has a full update first being ssf4 which was a game that was only made due to fan feed back. SSF4AE was also only made for home consoles because of fan feedback and both times those weren’t minor updates. Either way you can’t stop DLC at this point and people don’t want DLC to stop. The only thing people want to stop is on disc DLC that’s already in the game. People want games expanded so getting but hurt over something the people actually want isn’t the way to go. Your one of the hurr dur all DLC is evil type of guys.

          • Ashton Anchors

i could care less about DLC, the only people who are butthurt are the ones downvoting me. I just stated my opinion which i’m pretty sure i have the right to post. The fact that you’re trying to argue with some random guy on the internet because of his opinion on a free board….pretty much makes you butthurt as well if i’m not misunderstanding anything.

  • $30632660

Et Tu Atlus? Paid DLC? For a Shin Megami Tensei game? Did the Vita remakes of Persona 3 have Paid DLC?! I’m curious about that.So the game won’t just be 50 bucks, let’s stack up that Paid DLC amount and I can guarantee it’s going to be up to 70 bucks, possibly more.

Atlus you just went full 7th Gen, never go full 7th Gen.

  • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Thanks for the new info. I already have my copy pre-ordered =)

  • HeatPhoenix

Also, it annoys me to no end, the whole “OH NO SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT GRORIOUS ATLUS. LETS DOWNVOTE (rather than read his fucking point and see if we agree or not and respond)”. Atlus can do no wrong? Come on.

    • raymk

Both of you numbskulls are jumping the gun, they haven’t said anything about the DLC price just that there will be DLC. It annoys me just as much that people see DLC and go wahhhh!! I hate this game that I didn’t even play or know what the DLC to the actual game is yet.

      • HeatPhoenix

You are jumping the gun in assuming my reasons for disliking this or saying that. And please, to the people downvoting me, just tell me why, so I can respond in kind and perhaps make you see my point? Just downvoting me isn’t going to get me ANYWHERE.

I also do not hate the game at all, just the paid DLC format of haggling for a higher price for an incomplete game.

  • Vyse Legendaire

“Paid DLC” is supposed to be a feature now? Lol.

    • Zackasaur

      Evidently.

  • Pyrofrost

Well, while some of the comments here are so full of fuck…at least some of you didn’t try to pull the whole, “Atlus is sexist” argument, like a couple did at Siliconera.

I swear, people are really grasping at straws to find reasons to hate this game. Well, SMT isn’t the only game people are doing that to, but its the subject at hand.

    • Zackasaur

      lol

Atlus is a little sexist (*remembers battle panties*), but I don’t see how this has anything to do with this game. SMTIV is looking pretty awesome.

I hope their paid DLC is worthwhile!

      • Pyrofrost

I wouldn’t go that far though, fanservice is not equal to sexism. If that were the case, that would make things geared towards women sexist as well (against men). It’s not sexist, it’s just a catering to a fantasy or a fetish (everyone has them).

        • Zackasaur

You’re right; that would make things “geared towards women” sexist. It doesn’t have to belittle women to be sexist. Belittling men is equally sexist.

“Fanservice” is a poor excuse for selling things by belittling.

It has nothing to do with SMTIV (we’ve seen no sexism in the game so far), but dismissing sexism as “fanservice” makes you a part of the sexism problem plaguing the game industry and the modern world in general.

          • Pyrofrost

Here, I will make it easy for you. This is what people were basing the sexist argument on.

“One fan asked about Shin Megami Tensei lead roles always being male characters and if there’s a chance we could be seeing a female lead in the future. The possibility of a future female lead wasn’t ruled out, although different development team members seemed to have different feeling towards the idea. Some welcomed the possibility of there being a choice of gender, while others felt that Shin Megami Tensei games are better suited to male leads.” – quoted from Siliconera’s article.

Have fun with the quote above.

            ———–

Also, since you chose to bring up fanservice initially (through the battle panties reference). I will make my final statement concerning it.
*”Fanservice is a poor excuse for selling things by belittling.”*
Ummm no sir, “fanservice” is selling a fantasy/fetish, not belittling and sexist just because a handful of people find it offensive. “Sexism” is prejudice or discrimination based on gender. “Fanservice” is objectifying, not sexist. There is a difference, and people or things being objectified is a different argument. Why are we even talking about fanservice? Simple, because you brought it up in reply to my original post in relation to Siliconera.

            • Zackasaur

You seem to misunderstand some things, so I’ll lay it out in a short list.

              1. “Atlus is sexist” was the part to which I was mainly replying. Atlus has, in fact, been sexist in the past.

              2. I agree with you about SMTIV. SMTIV has shown no sexism at all. The protagonist is male in the story; that’s not sexist. It’s just storytelling.

              3. Objectification is sexism, by definition. It is belittling to one of the sexes. In the case of battle panties, it is belittling to females. Mind you, you could argue that the battle panties are tongue-in-cheek humour. They didn’t come across to me that way.

              4. I’ll also add that, ignoring the fact that it is sexist… Fanservice rather drags down games which are otherwise complex and philosophical. I’d love to introduce certain people to Persona 3/4, but the existence of things like that prevents me from being able to get them into it. It’s rather sad to see something brilliant held back by perversion.

Anyway, there you have it. Maybe now you’ll understand what I’m getting at.

              • Pyrofrost

Oh, I understand what you’re saying, I understood the first time…I just don’t agree with you, but I understand everything you’re saying.

So we shall agree to disagree and leave it at that.

  • Sim marcalo

can we go 1 3ds story without vita port begging? aint gunna happen

    • Zackasaur

I would definitely prefer to play this game on the PS Vita. It’s a much better system.

Nonetheless, I’ll play an awesome game no matter what, so I have this pre-ordered for 3DS. I would buy it again if they were to release a PS Vita upgrade, though.
