Shin Megami Tensei IV battle gameplay

Press Turn Battles, grins, and boss demons.

This week’s Shin Megami Tensei IV website update shared three new gameplay videos.

The videos include “Press Turn Battle,” which allows you get extra turns by hitting an enemy’s weak point, “Grin,” which temporarily powers up characters who are in an increased turn sequence and invalidates their weak point, and “The Demon Blocking the Way,” a demon boss battle.

We’ve combined all three clips below.

  • Bloodios

Looking at the gameplay like this, the control seems like it could be to be incredibly comfortable on iPhone. Here’s hoping we’ll get to see an enhanced version for Android and iOS in the future. /joke ;p

  • http://twitter.com/grschu Greg S

Everything looks great with the game except the battle system still seems a little underdone. I’d at least have liked something on the level of SMT3. But as Bloodios said, they might be looking towards a smart phone release in the future. Even then…

  • adhesive

I cant watch the video right now unfortunately, so forgive me if it explains it, but what activates ” grin”?

  • Gaara D.Dragon

The battles are in 2D, stil can’t wrap my head around this. It looks like it came out of the 90s.

    • XypherCode

That’s just how traditional MegaTen games work. First person, dungeon crawler style gameplay. The battle system is very good in it’s own right. And I reckon the battle effects will be pretty cool in 3D.

      • HeatPhoenix

Nocturne had 3D battles, and if that’s not traditional MegaTen, then I don’t know.

        • XypherCode

Yeah forgot about that. But maybe Atlus likes this style more. I think the monsters are 3D models with just 3-4 frames of animation in them, I’m not entirely sure. For one thing I can’t really judge the game before even playing. Let’s just wait and see. A demo would be nice though. :)

          • HeatPhoenix

            Agreed!

      • HeatPhoenix

Ontop of that, Etrian Odyssey had 3D battles on 3DS… so it’s not about tradition, I think. Something else.

    • Gabriel Lage Pessoa

      I know how you feel

  • penemue

I’m glad the game finally exists and I know it’s probably looked down upon but I really wish this would have gotten a home console release.
Would look great next to Catherine and Nocturne.

    #zomgsocheaplymade #zomgsougly #zomgnotonhdhomeconsoles #zomgnodualaudio #zomgfiftydollars #zomgfuckatlus #lolololol

Seriously, July can not come fast enough for me. I can’t wait for this game.

    • HeatPhoenix

To be fair, these are valid responses.

      • Pyrofrost

Personally, I’m waiting until I sink my teeth into the game before I start making judgment calls on it.

        • HeatPhoenix

I understand that, but there are things that are not in this game that people had expected. Whether we already play it or not has no influence on whether they are in the game or not.

          • Pyrofrost

What are these expectations? I been playing MegaTen for a very long time, but I haven’t been aware of any expectations other than a new installment.

            • HeatPhoenix

              - For it to be more impressive than previous installments

              - To have Kazuma Kaneko who has been a driving creative force behind SMT working on the newest main installment

Not gonna push any other than those, but I would expect AT LEAST those for any sequel, it’s like having Miyamoto have no input on the new Mario for the Wii U, it just doesn’t make sense.

              • Pyrofrost

Well, imo it does look far more impressive to me than Strange Journey (This game always starts a debate I’m not stepping into though).

About Kaneko, while I do agree, I’m willing to give these guys handling designs a chance. From what I read Kaneko is still supervising and is the scenario writer, so it’s not like he has been removed from the game.

                • HeatPhoenix

As for Kaneko, where did you read that? I’d like a source on that.

And Strange Journey, that was a spin-off DS game. The DS wouldn’t be able to handle Nocturne grade 3D models, even PSP grade, so it’s not a suprise they did what they did there. These are the same graphics as strange journey but a bit higher res art, just slightly.

                  • Pyrofrost

He’s not a supervisor; however he is responsible for the games story, and of course they are reusing tons of his demon designs. So he is officially, hands on in the production of this game.

                    The SMT4 staff list:

                    • HeatPhoenix

                      No.

“Original Scenario, Series Demon Design: Kazuma Kaneko”

Means that the original ideas and series demon designs are his, it does NOT mean that he is on the team right now, because he isn’t. It’s like how they put Satoshi Tajiri in the credits of the Pokémon anime, do you think he’s animating the movies too or something?

                    • Pyrofrost

Well, if you know so much, then give me a citation to who is doing the writing.

                    • HeatPhoenix

I searched around a bit, in Japanese as well. It seems they never named the scenario writer for this game. Probably because he does not have any kind of significance in atlus or the gaming industry as of right now.

I used the search terms “メガテン4 シナリオ 作者” and “メガテン4 シナリオライタ”, perhaps you’ll have more luck.

                    • Pyrofrost

Even on the SMT wiki it says he is involved.

                    • HeatPhoenix

For the first time in the series, character and demon designs were not handled by Kazuma Kaneko, who instead provided story concepts.

Is what you’re citing, right? Well, the wiki doesn’t give any sources for that either except from an article from “nintendoeverything” that lists the same staff as the gematsu article you linked, so I’m seriously not convinced. I want it to be true, but it just isn’t.

                    • Pyrofrost

I’m finding sources in Japanese that say he responsible story and scenario concepts. So I’m just going to go with that being the case until something comes out stating otherwise.

                    • HeatPhoenix

Do link me then. Seriously, saying you found sources and then not giving them is just… weird?

                    • Pyrofrost

It just repeats what Sal said, so I doubt it will mean anything; but here are a few.

                    • HeatPhoenix

Eyup, original idea by Kazuma Kaneko, series demon design by Kazuma Kaneko. No sign of him being involved whatsoever.

                    • Pyrofrost

Well, until something comes out to tell me otherwise, I will take the story scenarios and ideas from this game as if they are Kaneko’s.

                    • HeatPhoenix

Don’t misunderstand me though, it’s not like I won’t like the game. It’s just that it’s kinda futile to try and pretend things are there when they aren’t, like Kazuma in the SMT4 team.

                    • Pyrofrost

Ok, your right. No point in me defending it.
I concede on everything I have said thus far, so we can end this back and forth discussion. It’s going to go nowhere.

                    • HeatPhoenix

                      Great! I’m glad you agree.
By the way, are you the one consistently downvoting me on everything I’m posting here in this thread…?

                    • Pyrofrost

No, I’m not that petty, in fact…I don’t even use the downvote button. If I disagree with someone, I simply give my reason in a reply.

The main reason I said what I said, is because it would just end up being a endless back and fourth.
I remember you from Andrasang, and with that said; I have nothing against you and I don’t take your disagreement with me personally. Like me, I know that you’ve had a long love of MegaTen. So I can understand why you have the feelings you have about things.

                    • HeatPhoenix

Thanks a lot, actually. I’m not that petty either, but you get my upvote for this one (and a few other upvotes during this discussion were from me also)!

                    • Pyrofrost

You’re quite welcome, and thank you. I handed some out as well earlier to attempt to balance things out. Some people get really out of control with them at times. You should have seen the latest Famitsu score thread, it was pretty bad.

If only this were a type of system where people could only upvote. It would kinda force people who disagree to actually state a reason why and not act like children.

                • HeatPhoenix

And the previous game is not Strange Journey, that’s Nocturne.

                  • HeatPhoenix

Wuh, getting downvotes for posting a fact, is someone upset with me now?

                • dior

Please clarify how this game looks better than SJ? Obviously from a 3D standpoint as SJ has none of that but, I’ve yet to see any (new) demon designs or sprites that looks better than in SJ. The 2D areas don’t even look that interesting compared to SJ tbh, I’m not downing SMT4 nor am I saying SJ is/will be better than it but it’s honestly not doing much more than SJ already has graphically. Hell, they obviously reused Seraphim’s sprite from SJ so I’m sure they will use more. That said I do prefer Kaneko over Doi (when Doi is being original and not emulating Kaneko) but they learned with SJ that Kaneko isn’t what the new crowd exactly wants so I can’t blame them for giving the lead to someone else.

                  • HeatPhoenix

Just higher res, like as I said before. Isn’t what you are an even bigger testament to the budget constraints of this game?

Besides that, you mention “new crowd” but all Doi is doing is character designs. All the demon designs are copy pasted from SJ and Devil Summoner before that, as you said yourself.

                  • HeatPhoenix

As a sidenote: I’m not downvoting you. I really don’t like this system, it doesn’t matter who is right or wrong or what the discussion is about “weeeeeeeeh he doesnt say exactly what I think I’ll downvote him!!!!”. Saying ANYTHING bad about the vita also warrants downvotes and so does saying ANYTHING good about it in the a thread about say handhelds with the focus on 3DS. I just think it’s a gigantic waste of bandwidth because it’s mostly people downvoting who are too scared to actually come in and discuss. Sad.

                    • dior

I agree with you, I’m stoic to downvotes or upvotes regardless, my reply is for who I am replying to and that person only, not for anyone else’s attention or “le upboats”

                  • dior

And, I notice how I get downvoted yet nobody has come forth to add any clarification to that guys statement… Hmmm… So I will ask again, What is SMT4 doing that makes it look better than SJ? Because honestly it isn’t close to looking better than SJ art wise and the character designs aren’t nearly as good

                    • Pyrofrost

Just to let you know, I’m not downvoting you.

I mentioned my feeling about other things earlier, but since you point out character designs here, I will state my feelings about them.

At this moment, removing nostalgia glasses, I don’t like them any more or less than I do Kaneko’s work. They definitely aren’t worse imo. Different yes, but not worse. Different doesn’t equal worse to me. I’ll admit they had to grow on me because they were different, and they did. Now I like them. However, as with everything else, this is another judgement call.
Neither of us can be write or wrong here. Some people demand and want Kaneko, some people want more anime, some people just want something different. Me, I don’t really care as long as the game provides an amazing plot and character experience as it has in the past.

                  • Pyrofrost

I just personally feel the game looks better. I mean, people can only make personal judgement calls on something like this.
I everything in this game is a bit more clear and it has boosted resolution , the background and world is better looking, the menus are less primitive looking.
These are all judgment calls though, so it’s not like I can say you’re wrong about anything.

    • HeatPhoenix

      Also, you forgot #zomgnokazumakaneko #zomgnoshojimeguro

      • MosquitoLemon

        zomg no shoji meguro!

      • dior

No Shoji? I don’t think you realize how much of a problem this could HAVE been. Or, perhaps you’re one of those mainliners who is in complete denial of Shoji’s greatness. Either way, the music from these recent trailers have been amazing, Meguro or not.

        • HeatPhoenix

It doesn’t seem like much of a problem to me. Most of the soundtrack to devil summoner/digital devil saga/nocturne was shoji, but some expert tracks like Battle – Stuck in Amala – are by for example Kenichi Tsuchiya and those reflect the older style of SMT more accurately than Shoji Meguro’s different style per game/series/theme.

          Exhibit A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMtrYKCuZcM

          I rest my case.

          • dior

Regardless, Meguro undoubtedly did the best scores in those games, ESPECIALLY Nocturne. Or can you find me a better song in the ost than Large Map ~last area~, Saigo no Tatakai or Kotowari Boss theme? Those just a few, and don’t get me started on DDS. Haha, DDS IS Meguro, his greatest work easily. Just because something isn’t like the “old” doesn’t mean it isn’t good or better. I for one think it is infinitely better than the music from older SMT games, what he did with SJ’s soundtrack lets me know we haven’t even heard just how amazing he can be. If you HONESTLY think Meguro didn’t do dramatically better than the other composers on DDS, Raidou, SMT3 or anything else he’s composed on for that matter, I need whatever drugs you are on.

Oh and his single best song yet?

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdMhTL5bZrs
Not even from a mainline game yet it’s infinitely better than anything Tsuchiya could poop out even on the day he had explosive diarrhea.

            I rest my case.

            • HeatPhoenix

              Tell you what:

              Fair enough.
But I was more or less trying to ease the worries about music for this game… I guess we have reason to be worried considering Shoji is too busy working on P5 or something to be bothered with this.

              • dior

I’m not trying to get on your specifically or anything, I just hate this particular complaint when it comes to SMT. I understand what you mean about easing worries though, however it’s not like SMT IV’s known composers are bad at all lol. Actually they are very good, I just prefer Meguro.

                • HeatPhoenix

I get you. Me too. But we’ll be alright, I think. We’ll have to see!

        • HeatPhoenix

Besides that, my two “tags” were serious ones. I don’t like that those two aren’t working on this at all.

          • Gyro Zeppeli

Only Meguro isn’t involved with it, Kaneko is in charge of the game’s scenario.

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Ah crap, guys. I embedded last week’s video by mistake. xD

I’ve fixed it with this week’s clip.

  • DarthBrian

    $50. lol

    • dior

I’d pay $60+ for it if I had to..

      • HeatPhoenix

And if you’re getting the Japanese version… you would.

        • dior

And I am, so I pretty much have lol

  • new_tradition

Is it just me or does the music have some retro charm to it? <3

    • Eclipse

It definitely does! It reminds me of the older games.

ATLUS has a group of very talented composers, so I think we can definitely count on Ryota Kozuka delivering a great soundtrack.

  • dior

    Delicious Seraphim

  • Niyari

i mean, the battle music IS pretty bland compared to nocturne/DDS.

  • Heavenly_King

Why I am seeing the “mobile” version of the web in my PC?!
