Anyone here seen Iron Man 3?
It’s already shown here in our local theaters since Wednesday. Judging by the reviews I’ve seen online, seems like the film is really good. Way better than Iron Man 2 (which I found disappointing).

    • Solomon_Kano

I can’t see it til next week, since it doesn’t hit the US til the 3rd. :(

The reviews are making it sound great though, so at least it seems like it’ll be worth the wait.

      • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Agreed. I gotta wait till Friday until I can see it. Looking forward to it. I’ve enjoyed both of the previous films.

    • EspadaKiller

I have watched it a few hours ago and it’s really disappointing!

      • z_merquise

        Really?

I’m still going to watch it and see for myself if it’s good or not.

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

Hmm may wait for ho release

  • $18114340

Noticing an alarming lack of ROTT coverage on mainstream gaming press websites, so if you still haven’t seen it yet:

    http://youtu.be/dWhsZAhfyqc

Seriously, Joystiq’s about the only place I saw this.

    • Solomon_Kano

Wow. I’ve never even heard of this. It looks amazing!

  • http://twitter.com/OtakuGakuseiDa The Risen

Do you guys think Conception 2 will get localized? My finger is crossed on this one since Nintendo want to support Japanese game to go to west (dunno about the Vita version though)

    • $18114340

I doubt it. The concept is so distinctly Japanese that I can see most audiences in the west reacting violently to such a thing.

    • MosquitoLemon

Could be, though honestly the original wasn’t that great (actually it was garbage compared to OreShika)

  • Sae-Won Yoon

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LAnNTqIZteQ

    ….So apparently this just happened.

Y’know I’m not one to deny others something that they want especially if its anime, but I sure as hell don’t shove stuff down other’s throats asking them to accept it.

So yeah, I’m just worried the “fanbase” this thing gets will get out of control, much like a lot of other things as of late; Homestuck for example.

    • $18114340

To be perfectly fair, the “fanbase” is already out of control, depending on how you look at it, and the respective fanbases of other demographics aren’t much better themselves.

I’m not really seeing the problem here. It’s another KyoAni, except this time with bishies instead of moeblobs.

    • XypherCode

      KyoAni of all people…

    • 罪罰

      what the fuck is homestuck

    • MosquitoLemon

      Wait, what?

    • Raiyu

      OH WOW

I didn’t think they’d go through with it.

    • bloodiOS

I’m sorry for being a little slow on the uptake but… er… what’s the problem?

      • Kefkiroth

A commercial that contained a bunch of male bishie swimmers was made by KyoAni. Said commercial garners a bunch of fans, and now is revealed to be an actual anime.
Some people don’t like it because of the bishies. I don’t see it any different from the female fanservice we get anyway. Probably will check it out for some laughs.

        • bloodiOS

Ah, I see… Well bishounen shows have never been my cup of tea, so I probably won’t watch it but… I don’t see why it would be such a big deal that some folks (on that YouTube page) would even bother making a fuss out of it… all seem like too much of a drag, in my opinion.

    • Kefkiroth

…Is it wrong that I somehow predicted exactly what the video you posted was going to be?

Anyway, it will cater to fujoshis obviously, but I’m checking it out for laughs anyway.

  • MosquitoLemon

I’m going to Japan in a few weeks for fun. I pretty much have my plans set, but if anyone who lives there/visited there knows any badass game-related stuff to do, I’d appreciate suggestions.

    • http://backloggery.com/axersia Axersia

Well, drop by Akihabara, obviously. The places to visit are the Super Potato because… I dunno, its world-famous I guess, and the Mandarake. Thing is, the Mandarake sells like every video game ever made, so once you’ve been there, there’s not much point in going anywhere else. They generally have the best prices as well as they could have like 5 different copies of a single game all priced differently based on quality, but I find that even the cheapest is always in mint condition, and it saves you a good 500 yen or so.

If the Mandarake doesn’t have what you’re looking for… well, you’re probably not looking hard enough (make sure you can read hiragana/katakana so you can read the labels in the aisle, otherwise you’ll be looking through hundreds of games as opposed to tens), but just in case they really don’t, you should be able to find it in one of the Trader shops.

Also, be sure to drop by one of the many maid cafes in Akihabara for an unforgettably awkward experience. I personally had the best time at Hibari-tei, a crossdressing maid cafe which only opens once a month, but, y’know, it’s a niche interest.

Other than that, well… there’s plenty of arcades all over Japan, obvously, but if you were hoping for any big gaming events, I can’t think of any. If you like Dragon Quest, you might wanna visit Luida’s Bar in Roppongi.

By the way, how long are you staying in Japan for and what places were you planning on visiting?

      • MosquitoLemon

Oh man, Mandarake sounds awesome! Don’t worry, as my friend once said, ‘a gamer who only knows English is like a painter who can only see red and blue’.

I’m only going to be there a week. Two days in Osaka, and the rest in Tokyo. I might go to Sapporo for a day, because there is some restaurant my friend really wants to go to there. He’s made the trip before, I haven’t.

        • Kobracon

          You’re friend says cool things

      • MosquitoLemon

Also I don’t know if you have any tips on getting used systems, but I’m planning on getting a PS2 for sure, and maybe a GC and GBA SP (if only because there are a few GBC games I want).

        • http://backloggery.com/axersia Axersia

Super Potato should have you covered on those, but they’re generally one of the more expensive places to shop at. Assuming you already own a GameCube and PS2, it’s cheaper to just buy a Freeloader and Swap Magic disc if all you care about is running imports and don’t necessarily need the consoles for collection purposes. The GBA SP is already region-free so you can get one of those from anywhere (unless you’re looking for something special like the Kingdom Hearts or Sword of Mana GBA SP).

I never got around to buying one myself, but a WonderSwan Color/SwanCrystal might be a neat device to own as well. They’ve got some big names on there like FF, Front Mission, Klonoa, Mega Man, and tons and tons of anime franchises.

Also, Kyoto is right next to Osaka (30 min train ride) and probably the better choice if you’re gonna spend so much time in Tokyo anyway. They have pretty similar appeal after all, whereas Kyoto is a smaller city with a lot of World Heritage sites (temples, castles, that sorta thing). But in the end, it all comes down to where your interests lie.

          • MosquitoLemon

I already have a modded PS2, but its on its last legs, and I don’t trust anything but the real deal. I have lots of experience in this, and if I’m going to go any other route, it’s going to be an HD loader. In the meantime, I’d like to be able to play the games I buy there.

I sold my GameCube long ago. I don’t trust the freeloader because the compatibility isn’t 100%. Even if it’s 99.9%, I want to make sure one of the games I want is in that .1%. I also sold my GBA a long long lonnggg time ago. Way before I found out there are a million badass Japanese games for it. I didn’t have an SP, but I’d prefer something with a charger as opposed to batteries (though honestly I may just forget the GBC titles and just use DS slot-2 for the GBA games.)

I already have a WonderSwan Color, planning on picking up the two games in the Gundam trilogy I wasn’t able to get, as well as a few other good Gundam games. I also have an NGPC, which I believe is region free?

But yeah, basically this is a trip about food, and Osaka is purely a food jaunt. I’m going with a bunch of people who have been to Japan several times before, but they don’t know crap about games.

            • http://backloggery.com/axersia Axersia

Well, Japanese food *is* pretty great. If you like udon (or just noodles in general), I recommend visiting a place called Tsurutontan in Roppongi. Their noodles are like a centimeter in diameter, and if you ask for a tokumori (extra large serving), they’ll supersize you for free. But beware, it’s gonna take like an hour to finish your bowl. I went there with CheapyD from CheapAssGamer, and he told me that he took some of the ScrewAttack guys as well, and none of them were able to finish their bowls. I did, of course. I mean, it’d be pretty rude to go supersize and having to throw it away. I personally picked the curry udon with two large shrimp in it. Here’s a pic:

              http://s24.postimg.org/d58sq00xg/2012_09_28_12_44_24.jpg

Kinda hard to tell how big this bowl really is, but trust me, it’s huge.

Also, if you do decide to get a GBA SP and don’t neccesarily want a limited edition, you should pay attention to the serial number as there are both frontlit and backlit GBA SPs. You’ll want a backlit one, which has a serial number of AGS-101.

              • MosquitoLemon

This is excellent information! We will go to that place for sure!

Thanks for the serial number as well, I was not aware there were non-backlit SPs.

                • http://backloggery.com/axersia Axersia

Now that I think about it, similar precautions need to be taken when buying a GameCube and PS2. The most recent line of GameCubes (DOL-101) didn’t have component cable support anymore, and the most recent line of PS2 Slims (SCPH-9000X) had their power supplies built in. They’re locked at 100v in Japan, and just to be on the safe side, you might wanna get a step down transformer even if you live in a 110v-120v zone like the States.

The earlier Slim PS2s have external 100v-240v range adapters, but the ones shipped with the SCPH-70011 and 70012 models were prone to blowing up and recalled by Sony. They did offer free replacements without requiring proof of purchase (got one myself even though I don’t even have a Slim), but who knows, there might still be some faulty ones out there. You can recognize them by a serial number of HP-AT048H03 and a date stamp of 2004.8-2004-12.

Also, there’s one other thing that I only just read about. All PS2s in the SCPH-9000X series shipped in Q3 2008 or later use BIOS 2.30 or higher, which blocks all memory card-based softmodding like Free McBoot. You can recognize them by a date code of 8C or higher like 9A (Q1 2009) and 0D (Q4 2010).

                  • MosquitoLemon

I’m not looking to get a slim – everyone I know with a slim has burnt out their lasers, while my 10-year old PS2 is still kicking… though admittedly not as well as before. If I’m going to softmod (or hardmod) anything I’ll do it to a slim I buy here rather than in Japan.

I’ll be sure to check the serial on the GC, though to be honest I didn’t know any of them supported component cables (I had one around the middle of its run and only used it on a little TV that only took regular A/V cables).

Also one more thing, is there an easy region-free mod for the N64, or is it better to buy a Japanese one? There are two N64 games I have to buy no question, though it’s not imperative that I have some way to play them right away.

                    • http://backloggery.com/axersia Axersia

True, the fat PS2s do seem more durable. Mine’s been in use since Dec 2002 and still works as well as it did back then. Aftermarket replacement lasers are easy to come by and dirt cheap (<10 dollars) though, so I wouldn't necessarily let laser failure keep me from getting a Slim.

As for running Japanese N64 games… If you have a US system, all you have to do it break off some plastic tabs, or open up the console and remove the dust cover. That's literally all that's holding back Japanese games from working on a US system. PAL consoles have a different chip and would either require hardmodding (by replacing the PAL chip with an NTSC chip), or using an N64 Passport. This works for US systems too of course, but going in and removing that dust cover takes like 5 mins, and all you need is a Philips and Gamebit screwdriver.

    • EspadaKiller

Which part of Japan? Tokyo? There isn’t really game-related stuff to do but there are a ton of game shops and related stuffs in Akihabara.

      • MosquitoLemon

        Osaka, Tokyo, and Sapporo.

    • Kobracon

Arcades. Full stop. The sheer size and variety of their arcades is mind blowing. And unlike where I live, all the machines WORK!

      • MosquitoLemon

Yeah, I lived in Hong Kong, which had some pretty decent arcades, but there are a few games I want to try out that they don’t have anywhere else (like that car racing/ mech game, hahaha)

  • Pyrofrost

It’s the weekend again, so what are my friends at Gematsu playing?
I just finished Yakuza 5 yesterday, so I will be playing DW8 while I think of the next JRPG I wish to jump into.

EDIT: Decided on my next JRPG…Tales of Eternia on PSP!

    • 罪罰

Since I already beat Rising on Revengeance Mode, I’m playing Resident Evil 6 and since it’s quite bad I’m going for the hardest difficulty on solo just so I can truly experience the “horror” (iwant2playjacuzifive)

      • http://youtube.com/miyabigaming 武神水樹

How is it from one to ten?

        • http://twitter.com/Nates4Christ Nate

I’d say an 8 in my opinion. If your as big of a trek fan as me then maybe a 9 or 8.5. But I think it is great.

    • Locksus

I’m playing through Ocarina of Time 3D, Fire Emblem: Awakening and Pokemon Sapphire on my phone.

      Cannot wait for Pokemon X & Y

More Soul Hackers, and Monster Hunter. Packed most of my games from my dorm so the place is pretty empty right now in terms of things to play.
Huzzah! I spotted Ayesha out of the corner of my eye, so there is that too :) … Case is empty…

Same here, it’s fantastic. Sometimes I forget it’s even a demo. Probably the best demo I’ve ever played.
        So hyped for Tuesday.

        • jujubee88

You’re not joking. It’s easily the best demo I have ever played.

It took me from “maybe buy” to “my life depends on buying it”!

      • Kobracon

        Here here!

      • Haku_Luvs_You

Hey I just got the soul sac demo. On mission 6 is there no way to save Sortiara? I really don’t want to sacrifice her :(

    • Solomon_Kano

Dark Souls and Okami, for certain. I’m hoping to finally finish PW and get back into P3P as well, but we’ll see.

      • Elvick

Okami <3 Tempted to import the physical version of HD and platinum it again. Such a good game. If only it were on Vita as well.

        • Solomon_Kano

Okami HD on Vita would be killer. The heavy filter on that OLED… I can’t even fathom how gorgeous that would be.

    • EspadaKiller

Just as usual playing Fifa 13…maybe I should really complete Rising in Revengeance Mode, lazy to play as I stopped at the final chapter lol.

    • MosquitoLemon

‘beat’ Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 yesterday (finished the main campain…), I’ll play more Atelier Meruru if I get the time.

    • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Resident Evil 4 (first time ever), Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition Trophy run, Resident Evil 6 (Trophy run). My obsession with Resident Evil has gotten out of control xD! Oh I finished Ayesha, so I’m enjoying my trophy run but I’m taking a break for now to enjoy killing undead.

      • Solomon_Kano

Ah. You’ve reminded me that I need to finish RE4. I bought it last year, but I painted myself into an unwinnable spot so I started the whole thing over.

        • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

I have to say my biggest complaint about RE4 is the controls. Handling Leon is difficult, that in itself is the struggle, never mind how good the enemies are (they’re really smart like holy cow). Story wise, presentation wise and use of the level design is pretty good though. I had snuck up to a high point in the village and they threw molotov cocktail grenades up there. I was…horrified.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, it was weird getting a handle on Leon after playing more modern TPSs. That aside though, I was enjoying the game. You’re right about them being smart. That kinda shocked me being that the game is how old now? Good stuff.

            • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Yep, I certainly hope Shinji Mikami takes everything he learned from RE4, as well as what’s been seen recently. It can still feel like survival horror AND I can control my character well. I’m sure he has though, which is why I’m very excited about Zwei. Though he’s got some stiff competition with The Last of Us coming in June.

              • Solomon_Kano

Oh, I’ve no doubt that Mikami will deliver on the controls. The man gave us this generation’s best TPS in Vanquish, after all!

It’s interesting you mention The Last of Us as competition though. Despite survival and horror clearly being key aspects of the game, I rarely hear people cite it as survival-horror — press or fans. A real shame, since it’s looking like the only game in that genre to get the survival part down properly this gen. In many ways, I’d even say it’s outclassing the genre’s pioneers in that regard. So, yea, stiff competition indeed.

                • http://www.psvitadirect.com/ Kurisu Makise

Someone just needed to be brave enough to say it, the fact it happened to be me, well…(laughs). You’re right though, it is outclassing the pioneers and charting (lol) new grounds.

                  • Solomon_Kano

Pioneers… charting new grounds. Frontier humor. Yesss lol.

I personally think BO is a stinky game. BO get it. :P Are you getting Gundam Breaker?

        • miyamoto

MSG:BO is the best Gundam game we ever played. The fact that it arrived in Southeast Asia region last March proves that a lot of people are loving this game and its going strong. Soon it might make it to western shores. This game has a cult following here in North America and we play this game religiously. Its that good.

          Gundam Breaker gets boring fast.

Playing dark souls for the first time, usually not a fan of challenging games, but I want to put myself to the test :)

Also playing devil survivor overclocked. (came out pretty recently here in europe, happy as can be that soul hackers and smt IV will be doing the same! :D)

Playstation 3 mini for PS4 needs to happen.

    • Elvick

      I’d buy it. Convenience ftw.

      • LordKaiser

Agreed 100% Those that care about bc should have the option.

  • Raiyu

So I put together a new gaming PC. What do you guys think?

    http://pcpartpicker.com/p/TbqB

Things to keep in mind: I’ll be buying the motherboard and CPU from Microcenter since its only a 20 minute drive from me, right by my school. I also plan on maybe trying bitcoin mining with it which is why I chose the 7950…though at this point it may be too late for me.

Also, do you think it would be better to buy the CPU/Motherboard combo last since haswell is around the corner? It’s a small upgrade over Ivy but I figure I might as well wait since this is not an update.

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Looks pretty good. I suppose price is not a big deal? I’m only overlooking this quickly. I’ll post a few things I learned when I bought a CPU cooler.

      I. – I had to have a friend come help me install mine, needed someone to hold it in place and such. Try to install it early on, don’t save it for last.

II. – Make sure it has enough space between it and memory slots. They take up more space than expected, and sometimes memory with big heat sinks can create space issues. Looks like your memory should be fine, I think! I just wanted to share this, because I’ve seen this problem occur before.

About the memory – I’d personally go with sticks that have better latency, for overclocking purposes of course. I don’t see a real need for more than 12GB, not for gaming only purposes.

Everything else seems fine to me. I’ve never tried Samsung’s SSD’s. I’m partial to Crucial. Any reason you need 250GB?

      • Raiyu

Thanks for the critique, and I’m trying to stay under $1200~ for my build (thank you MicroCenter). I’m not unfamiliar with building rigs, this will be my second one after selling my first baby :(. Though I’m unfamiliar with how memory latency works, is it lower the numbers the better? Thanks for the tips! :D

As for the SSD, I have a 128GB Crucial, but I feel it doesn’t have enough space. I only have about 50GB~ or so left on it so I thought I’d get a bigger one and retire the 128GB for my laptop, just get another 128GB Crucial or just not get one at all. I’m undecided yet. In any case, it’ll be the last thing I buy so I’m in no hurry to get it.

    • LordKaiser

It’s a standard gaming PC and it looks good but that case don’t convince me. I would go with the HAF XM unless you really need full tower.

      • Raiyu

To be honest, the only reason why I chose it was because it was on sale lol. I’ll most likely just get a Fractal Define R4. Why the HAF XM though?

        • LordKaiser

It’s about the same price and Cooler Master seem to be 1 of the top brands. The full tower HAF X gained a lot of points on reviews etc. I suggest to watch reviews for HAF XM and the Fractal and decide for yourself.

As for waiting on Haswell it depends on how urgent you need a PC. if there’s no rush the you should wait. But if you need it now then do it as no mathere what your PC will become obsolete in just a few years.

I have a Bloomfield i7 920, 6GB of DDR3 1333, 1.5 TB 5900 RPM (Slow, I want to replace.) and a radeon HD 4860 and it won’t run Phantasy Star Online 2 on max settings.

I’m curious how gaming is going to end up. Companies like EA and Activision are becoming more greedy which leads to consumer and employee suffering.

There needs to be a reset in that gaming prices need to be affordable for all not just those who get a paycheck every week.

Seems the days of fun and games are over, it’s so competitive now

    • $18114340

It’s already happening. Year-by-year, game sales across the industry are falling, and it’s not something you can expect to be revived by the release of new consoles. Activision and EA are shutting down more studios and laying off more employees, and desperately cloying at alternative markets such as mobile, free-to-play, and casual games. They’ve gotten so bloated that the only hope they have of sustaining themselves is to spread themselves as thinly as possible, but their dominance over the industry was never a given, and the seams show up again and again.

What’s the rest of the industry to do? They can’t keep up. Development costs are at all-time highs, audiences and markets are shrinking and diversifying. People are fed up. So what happens? Not a crash, but a whimper. Monstrosities like EA and Activision will probably be able to adapt by exploring new avenues of ripping their customers off. The rest of the industry is going to have to change, and we’re seeing this already.

The publishing models are changing. DIgital distribution platforms and crowd-funding are making it easier for smaller players to get into the market. They aren’t going to make huge impacts on the entire industry like last generation, but that’s the whole point. Smaller companies means smaller markets. There will be more games targeted towards niche audiences, but there are now more niches than ever. There’s something for everyone in here, rather than everything for anybody.

This means we get better games and better prices, because publishers are going to abandon the idiotic console-gaming philosophy that every game is equal and should be priced equally, and developers are finally starting to realize that there is no such thing as ideal multi-platform development, since creating games for lower common denominator hardware specs compromises the integrity of your creations. There won’t be as many developers doing overambitious things, because publishers like Square Enix are starting to feel the backlash from just throwing money at the development of huge titles. Big development means the risk of big flops. You would think this is common sense, but if the devs and publishers can get away with it and still make boatloads of money, they will. Now what’s happening is that they can’t get away with it anymore.

Essentially, what will happen is that the bigger companies are going to stay big for as long as they can, but there will be fewer of them because the markets are respectively getting smaller and there’s no way to sustain themselves. Former titans are going to delegate their business to smaller markets like mobile, like Konami did. Other studios are going to merge with and be absorbed by their parent companies, which are going to become more focused on smaller products. On the other hand, all the way at the bottom rung there will be more small development studios and publishing houses, that are focused on and catered towards specific tastes. What’s happening is that we’re about to enter an age of gaming curation. No more of this “one size fits all” triple-A bullshit. That didn’t work, and it’s time to trim the fat off our asses. Thank god.

(And if you need affordable games, start playing PC games. Seriously. Affordable since forever.)

  • DarthBrian

So, I recently created a movie blog. Since this is off-topic stuff I guess it’s fine to post here.

    http://rabidmoviefan.wordpress.com/

Today’s update discusses the Ratchet and Clank Movie trailer so I figured there’s a bit of cross-over. Otherwise I wouldn’t be pimping my blog like this. I’m not into self-publicizing and all that vain jazz. But let me know what you think. I’m just using one of the standard wordpress themes for now. Trying to use the blog mostly to learn HTML and PHP and stuff like that.

I want Killer is Dead soooooo bad

    • Solomon_Kano

Same. Biggest game of the summer for me.

      • PrinceHeir

        same!!

along with Dragon’s Crown and JoJo Bizarre Adventure!!!!

        • Solomon_Kano

Ah, yea, DC’s a big one too. Hopefully I’ll have the cash to get it on both PS3 and Vita. I’d love to get JJBA as well, especially that awesome LE, but I’ll have to save that for later.

    • futuristic_imagination

Me too, but my gaming budget is focused on these pre-orders so far:
      Soul Sacrifice
      The Last of US
      Dynasty Warriors 8
      Tales of Xillia

I will eventually get Killer is Dead as day one purchase

  • bloodiOS

Is there anyone presently here happened to be a Vita’s owner? May I ask you to download the two video files below, then see if they are playable on your Vita and reply back to me? I’m doing some experimental encoding right now.http://tinyurl.com/cm5ws66http://tinyurl.com/cb7yya5

    • Kefkiroth

Yes, they play beautifully on my Vita. Video is crisp, and so is the audio.
Killzone trailer looks amazing on the OLED. Nice Lexus, too.

      • bloodiOS

Thank you! I’ll be saving these settings for future encoding (when I finally have my Vita…) So, did the video play perfectly at 60fps? Was there any jitter during playback, I mean.

        • Kefkiroth

It played perfectly smooth. Not that I’ve ever noticed any jittering from any video I put on my Vita (I put a lot of anime in it every now and then).
Also, just out of curiosity, what are you using to encode the videos? Everywhere I look says to use Handbrake (which I currently use), but just wondering if there are any alternatives.

          • bloodiOS

Alright, that will be all. Thanks a bunch.

          • bloodiOS

Sorry, didn’t notice your edit until much later (all thank to Disqus’ laggy update -__- )

Anyway, I’ve been using MeGUI ever since I got used to Avisynth, and personally found it to be pretty satisfying. Also, since H.264 is pretty much the only thing I use these days, sticking with MeGUI just seems that much more manageable.

Before this, I was using XMedia Recode, which was decent for basic conversions but tend to crash way too much when dealing with avs scripts (mainly ones with bunch of filters.) Ultimately, I switched to MeGUI and haven’t bothered looking back ;)

  • RSene

A trusted insider source told me the event MIcrosoft will promote on 21 May is to reveal an Next Generation of colors for the current Xbox 360 controller….

    no, really!

  • Zuhri69

Lately, i’ve been facing a dilemma. I mean, I love jrpg but finding myself starting to … dislike the atypical japanese trope (tsundere, goth, loli, moeblobs). Does it mean that i’ve outgrown gaming?

Because frankly, I really love jrpg’s but because most of the jrpg’s are filled with this now, i’ve avoided it. And now i’m in a jrpg drought.

    I miss jrpg…

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Nah its just that most jrpgs suck now and gaming is in an awkward place in general.Don’t give up hope!

      • Zuhri69

        Hahaha, thanks man.

    • DesmaX

Well, it’s part of the japanese culture nowadays, no need to feel bad. Try to think that some japanese people are tired of all those Reboots in hollywood movies. It might cheer you up.

And, hey, you can still play the main SMT games

      • Zuhri69

Well, I understand what you mean. I hoped that one day the jrpg revolution will come again.

    • Kobracon

I know what you mean, all I can say is try to find the obscure JRPGs. The ones that go against the norm (thus avoiding or parodying stereotypes) like SMT. Avoid the Tales games coz while good, have some pretty cheesy characters (looking at you Tales of Graces)

      • Zuhri69

Well, i’ve tried some rpgmaker games. But most of their games are incomplete though. But, credit when its due, graces has an amazing battle system.

        • Kobracon

Oh definitely, but you were talking about stereotypes and Graces was one of the few I found grating (then again it could’ve been the english dub >.<)

          • Zuhri69

It is quite grating. Makes me wonder why do they insists on using it. I mean, Abyss has some stereotypical characters. So is Vesperia. But Graces was terrible. It’s like they take the most common trope and decided to run it 100%. Which is quite a pity, because it can be quite good if given to a more able writer.

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

I try and ignore than stuff in my Japanese games and anime when possible. Sure, some stuff just abuses those tropes and makes it hard to enjoy for me.

I tend to enjoy the Tales of games. They might have some of those tropes, but they don’t usually abuse them. Persona has some of them at times, but not enough to ruin the game.

I’m hoping for a return to form this next generation. For console JRPGs at least. If you have the portables, you should be able to find lots of good JRPGs.

On console — I have to ask. Have you played Tales of Vesperia? It’s so awesome.

      • Zuhri69

I did. Its not bad actually. But sadly my xbox died. For portables, I have to say that radiant historia really exceed my expectation. I wished that it was released on console.

  • DesmaX

I gotta say, Neptunia V overworld theme is one of the nicest I’ve ever heard.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATYyiZQnHdA

Sometimes, I just leave my game there and then I just listen to it…

  • Kobracon

So I sent resumes to Bandai-Namco Singapore, Tecmo-Koei Singapore and Ubisoft Singapore and now impatiently waiting if anyone will respond, if at all, to me….

    • Zuhri69

Cool do they have any account position?

      • Kobracon

Not that I saw….I applied for either game programmer or game designer.

    • http://twitter.com/kazumalynx Zero

Best of luck to you! =)

      • Kobracon

        Thanks ^_^

    • z_merquise

Good luck! Have you also sent your resume to Platinum Games too?

      • Kobracon

Thank you! I would but they require fluent japanese (must be Level 1) so I’m working on my japanese. Going smoothly so far, learnt far more Kanji in a month than I ever did in a class.

    • DrForbidden

      Good luck, bro!

  • z_merquise

Just watched Iron Man 3 recently. I gotta say that I really enjoy it! Better than Iron Man 1 and 2 (especially 2).

Though I do also understand @EspadaKiller:disqus’s post below as he/she was disappointed with the film.

  • Tac-Mex

I am worried about the Next gen consoles, are they gonna have to be always online? are they gonna block used games? are they gonna have drm? the future looks so dark, hold me..

  • LordKaiser

I hope censorship is not the cause of PS02 delay.

  • PrinceHeir

okay i just bought a PS3 Super Slim. 250GiB, because the super slim got busted after 3 weeks(gave me back my money, but bought in the same store P4 Golden and a gaming keyboard) after 3 years straight of gameplay(2010)

already deactivate all the systems on my PSN(surprised it has 5 PS3 O___O) and now starts fresh with this baby!!

first game i installed is Uncharted 3 GOTY(which came in the bundle)

    looks amazing!!!

though at first, it looks ugly as sin in the promotional videos, but it doesn’t look half bad at all.

the disc tray looks kinda cheap, i wish they use the same matte from the sides on the top one.

because those borders are just ugh. i want every design to match all sides.

still surprise this is lighter than i thought, heard the lens are much better now so i don’t expect breaking this in the next 5 years.

so yeah looks good, but i prefer the original slim.

    can’t wait for PS4!!!!

  • PrinceHeir
